[info-tech] skype (or other suggestion)
Greetings to another before the storm again day! The beauty, however, has made it all bearable. Here's the deal: an elementary student was diagnosed with cancer several months ago, will be starting his chemo treatments again shortly. It was suggested maybe we could use Skype and he could connect with the classroom while he is in Iowa City this time around. I know enough about Skype to know the general workings . . . but not enough to say this is the way to go or to even know what things may we need to make this a go? (no, I haven't skyped yet -- I finally joined facebook and twitter within the past few months--baby steps!) Ideas . . . suggestions . . . . equipment needed . . . . anything to get me going in the right direction with this? Teacher has a MacBook Pro with 10.40.11 Appreciate the help! RE: [info-tech] skype (or other suggestion)
We have used Skype with success from long term hospitals and other continents. I'm not all that familiar with Mac's but a headset would be a solid investment for the student. A projector or a big screen monitor seems appropriate for the classroom. The classroom should be able to get by with a simple condenser microphone, and if there is a built in camera you should be set. -Original Message- From: info-tech-ow...@aea8.k12.ia.us [mailto:info-tech-ow...@aea8.k12.ia.us] On Behalf Of Jackie Fonley Sent: Tuesday, January 19, 2010 3:26 PM To: Info Tech Subject: [info-tech] skype (or other suggestion) Greetings to another before the storm again day! RE: [info-tech] skype (or other suggestion)
We had a little girl in the Middle School with cancer and purchased some Linksys cameras and put them in the classrooms. Opened up in a limited fashion the firewall to the website on the cameras. From her hospital bed she could Pan and Zoom in on the instructional area and some parts of the classrooms and could hear the teacher well. Worked really great for a couple of years until she got better and now attends class. Cost about $1000.00 for 4 cameras. Skype would be a definite possibility. I know that some folks have some issues with the security and Skype's desire to use all your bandwidth, but it should be great for this. Another option would be to send a MacBOok with the kid and have him use iChat. Using iChat would allow for desktop and document sharing. Re: [info-tech] skype (or other suggestion)
Jackie, If you find something that you think really works well, please share it. I use skype to see my grandkids and also to talk to Scott F and David Herzog at MCP - occasionally. We found that you can show your desktop to the other side. I have also showed video from my flip video camera from my desktop and it works great. You can hear the videos audio and at the same time here both sides of the skype call. As long as you have a strong connection signal the call goes well. My son in Monterey, Ca has a poor signal and it breaks up all the time. The other problem is that each side has to move slowly or you get pixillation. Good luck with this adventure. What is your skype address? Bud Carruthers On Jan 19, 2010, at 3:25 PM, Jackie Fonley wrote: Greetings to another before the storm again day! The beauty, however, has made it all bearable.
