Hi Patrick, Thanks. I have no clue who will be #3000 In reality, I have over 21 reports out as I type this. If they all would reply with follow ups, I could reach #3000 sooner. But #3000 should come in later this year. After all I got 40 QSLs in 2007, so being January getting 21 more should be easy. Re: [IRCA] 960 CFFX DX Test not heard in NE Oregon
Hi Bruce, I must admit the code I got was very weak, even with the beverage. Not audible on any other antennas as far I could tell. KSRA ran a DX test back in the 90s, I believe. That is the only time I have ever heard them. As I remember their DX test wasn't all that strong either, but I did get a QSL. One tough Idaho catch. [IRCA] KIGO 1420.3 Idaho a maybe in MN 11:13 pm CST
Could hear singing good enough to tell it was a man singing, a style of singing I don't associate with English but probably Spanish (don't know music type name), a word sung ending in a long o sound. Using the R-75, 2.1 kHz USB & experimenting with the twin passbands. Carrier DFs about right, fqy estimated only as closer to 1420.3 than 1420.2 or 1420.4. I hear the probably Spanish singing for sure only when loop is not N-S, & do not hear the singing when I go to 1420.0 LSB. Unfortunately so far, I can't distort semi-local KTOE adequately to concentrate on the other audio, without losing the other audio. KTOE signal is several hundred uv/m on groundwave. S-9 + 40 dB w/narrow AM, goes down to S-9+20 dB in USB. 73, George S., MN - Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Mobile. Re: [IRCA] 960 CFFX DX Test not heard in NE Oregon
I've been through my recordings a couple of times now and can't find any sign of CFFX, even with narrow filter settings. CFAC was dominant with ESPN, KALE was there at times with Gonzaga basketball, KOVO with Spanish, and an unid c/w (KLAD or KSRA) showed up at times. I may check this freq again now that I know KSRA is on at night - it's been on my most-wanted list for the last 40 years. A KSRA ID last night would have made me even happier than one from CFFX. Good Evening, KIGO 1420 in with a whooper of a signal. Listed as 12 watts at night. I read on-line that a gentleman from Norway heard them last May. [IRCA] Nuclear Equipped Sony SRF-59 Received from Gary Debock today........
Hi Guys: Today I received the Souped Up Version of the Sony SRF-59 from our Man on the Mountain...Gary Debock in Oregon. Gary was kind enough to take some time and Tweek one of the Stock models up for me to give a spin..and I am most grateful for his efforts. This afternoon I was able to tune around on the SRF-59 Nuclear Model.. 5 New Stations logged on the SRF-59 and I can see a definite improvement in sensitivity but I need to give it some more timeunder different conditions at night.and in the morning. I can see a great improvement on Groundwave Signals in the 100 to 200 Mile Range. However I can also see a little more problems trying to hear stations on Adjacent Frequencies to my Localsas the Tweeking has also improved the Signal Levels of the Locals as well!! Bottom line isit's another Keeper..and with 5 new ones in one sittingI sure as heck can't complain. Thanks Gary for the time you took to tweek this baby up.and I'll try to reward your efforts with some Great DX on this Rig.. Heard for the first time on the SRF-59 today were 560 WRDT Monroe, MICH. [IRCA] Good SSS and SRF59 activity
SSS on the regular rig: 880 Arkansas, 1140 Pekin IL, 1350 KRNT IA, 960 from Shawano WI, among others. Nothing new, the first two not heard too often. Spent more time with the Sony SRF 59 using my Radio Shack loop. I hold it in the middle ofn the loop, and hold the flat part against my chest, while I wandered about the room, turning mself and the radio, looking for optimum nulling spots for my worst pests. Worked like a charm and now a valued tactic using this ULR. Nulled 640 and has one or two stations underneath, 760 WJR null yielded Colombia and 770 WABC null yeilded the same. Just about every station could be nulled. I didn't linger for IDs. Nothing was all that strong and signals were up and down. I was mostly interested in scanning the dials. I guess I could always do the same with a portable receiver such as the Sangean ATS909, but would be a pain to hold it and the loop and keep it all positioned. A ULR makes this easy and relatively comfortable. It's interesting how diferent parts of the room yield varied results. I also tried the 59 by holding it to light switches. The wiring acts as an antenna, though I wasn't nearly so impressed with the results. Next up I will try holding it to my longwires. What I'll call the DX Walkabout method will come in handy as one of several things I'll try during good sunset, overnight and regular cx. If I have a weak signal in a null, and can barely get the null, it might in my mind be worth a walkabout. Yeah, this strategy might get casual observers to suggest you seek psychiatric counselling. ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

I didn't stay up late to try for the CFFX test, as they are such a common groundwave pest, and have 'em veried as CKWS some three decades ago. But I did get up early to catch their final sign-off, hoping that perhaps they would do some kind of tribute to their trusty old transmitter, like when CBL signed off 740 some years back. [IRCA] The Sunclock Applet
This came across my desk today, and I thought it might make a nice addition to the DXTests.info web site and possibly others. It is a real time clock that illustrates the grayline as it moves across the earth. It looks like it might be fairly easy to customize to display where the sun would be (will be) positioned at the time that a DX test occurs. Bob, From this coast I heard much the same as you. I have heard ZBVI may years ago on 780; I have yet to hear Penscacola on 1620 (heard Atmore AL years ago) but get USVI often; WKAQ and others also appear occasionally. That schedule does apply, but my problem is that I'm far enough inland that these signals do not make it nearly as often as they do closer to the coast. [IRCA] CFFX-960 DX test
Heard with very faint code at 1:02 and 2:03 EST through a mix of IBOC hash (probably from WWJ-950 Detroit), WERC, WFIR, KMA (I just KNEW they would go 24 hours as soon as that antenna work was finished last fall), and the Cuban ticker. No sweeps noted, and no test material heard around the 12:00 hour. Then-CKWS was first heard in November 1971. They were playing "Sweet City Woman" by the Stampeders that night. They remained a fairly frequent visitor throughout the decade. What a decade it was on 960: ZFB1 in Bermuda, WEAV in upstate NY, WELI New Haven with monthly frequency check, KROF in Abbeville LA with a hurricane watch and Cajun music, KFLN MT with voice ID on a frequency check, CFAC Calgary, KLAD OR with voice ID on a DX test, XEK Nuevo Laredo on monthly frequency check (dunno why an XE was paying for one), and Radio Sutatenza in Magangue, Colombia. With KMA 24 hours, is KGGF-690 Coffeyville the last nightly sign-offer in the Midwest? Thanks, Saul and the gang, for this test! Steve Francis Alcoa, Tennessee More new features than ever. [IRCA] Police radio on current X-band frequencies
There was some discussion yesterday about police radio stations that once operated on what are now BCB X-band frequencies. None of them were heard by me, either -0005 or 0100-0105 EST when the audible signals were all in voice. I QRT at 0106. During the 0100 section I heard Reloj much better than an hour earlier, mostly even to atop WERC. But I did not hear any second RR signal (a different xmtr) here, though I frequently hear a second one on 950, about 1 second behind the main one. I never had any usable 3rd signal here on 960 but just using my portable was not a truly fair test. Perhaps Les Rayburn could advise if "Your news and information station" is ever used on his local WERC Someone mentioned an ESPN ad that includes "code". I remember hearing something like that using "code" but the ad I did hear somewhere, if the same thing, was just a jumbly bobble of a few non-characters and was nowhere like real code, which I do know. 73 BobTampa ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

[IRCA] CFFX DX Test heard with Dueling Ultralight Radios
CFFX-960 heard weakly with Morse code IDs and sweep tones from about 0001:30 to 0003 EST using both of my unmodified Sony SRF-M37V and SRF-59 radios at my work apartment in Albany. Listened to the test on the M37V while taping the test through the headphones jack of the 59. I generally prefer the slightly higher pitched and crisper audio of the 59, but the M37V sure helps with frequency control. Test was not an easy catch for me due to all of the noise from dimmer switches, forced air heating systems, etc., in my apartment complex. Still, the ultralight radios performed admirably since the Sony ICF-2010 and Radio West loop that I usually use remain in my home in Saint Albans, Vermont. Bob Foxworth noted that WERC dominated the frequency at his QTH with Fox News. I caught a partial announcement of "Your news and information station" at EST, then into Fox News. Does WERC use that slogan? [IRCA] CFFX heard on the North Coast...
...of Lake Ontario. Glad to see that the CFFX test made it to the West Coast and to Scotland. Here in Toronto (just 2 hours or so west of Kingston on Highway 401) I had no problem hearing CFFX mixing with WFIR. Of course, CFFX was a regular here. I listened before the test period started to hear a "..we're moving to FM" announcement. And at midnight I heard the code, sweep tones and music by John Mayer and some Canadian content in the form of a song by Blue Rodeo. That was enough for me, as it was already past my bedtime.. Contrary to the myth eminating from Tennessee, this Canadian also is not rich and had to get up early for work. I wonder how much other Canadian content got played before they signed off of 960 for good. Perhaps Gordon Lightfoot's "Wreck of The Russ Edmunds Fitzgerald"? (Although that might be too much of an oldie for the Lite 104.3 format..) Thanks to Saul and Jim. I checked for about a minute this morning on the way to work on the car radio and 960 had strains of "news radio WERC". Niel Wolfish Toronto Looking for the perfect gift? [IRCA] CFFX wrap-up
Couple things... I'm thrilled this test made it to the west coast and overseas. I'm thrilled many of you heard it on a SRF59 or other ULR. CFFX was on DAYTIME pattern, not nighttime. But I still think there is (was, now) a null. The first thing I heard at 0600 was an anct, very brief, that it was going off. Then went off and first in was a US anthem. It faded and then heard a Thunder Country ID. That's WHAK MI. I have heard them s-on with anthem in the past t 6 am, so not sure if that's who did it, or the Iowa station - have heard both here. WFIR and WELI in the mix, but I caught some sleep after. Now will see what post-SRS does...and will be in form for SSS and tomorrow's SRS before heading to Toronto. Someone will respond to your official reports. I will also respond to all e-mails. Just give me time. I am dawg-tired this morning and have work to do and sleep to catch up on. [IRCA] 960 CFFX heard in Penna.
About a minute and a half after the top-of-the-hour, at both midnight and 1am EST, I heard the morse code breaking through dominant WFIR and Reloj followed by short sweep tones. Haven't decoded the code yet but it was very distinct. Some pop music was heard following the code but I don't know if it was from CFFX. [IRCA] CFFX-960 Test Not Heard
I didn't think I'd have much of a chance with KKFN-950 spewing The Horrible Hiss of IBOC right at me from just 5 miles down the road. I am directly in front of one of their minor lobes. But I gave it a shot for the first 2 hours of the test. I could detect some analog audio on 960 in the best null that I could create on KKFN. But it was too weak for me to determine who or what it was. Thanks anyway to all involved for arranging this test. [IRCA] CFFX Sign-off?
After successfully hearing CFFX's first DX Test programming spot at EST, I called it a night, foregoing the final two. However, I set the alarm to try to hear a final sign-off announcement from the station, scheduled to go off air for good at 0600 EST. I was at the radio by 0552, but had no luck-- the frequency was dominated by WSBT. I am not sure if they had signed off earlier or if propagation conditions just did not favor hearing the station. One intriguing little bit of monitoring-- I did hear the US National Anthem below WSBT shortly before 0600, but it was too weak to hear any sign-on announcement after it. Probably KMA, which as far as I know still signs on and off, still using the NA. 73 Bill Dvorak Madison WI **Start the year off right. Re: [IRCA] 960 CFFX
A word caution: The CW some of you are saying you are hearing might not be from CFFX. I could be from Cuba. Radio Reloj (or Radio Rebelde, it's one of them) plays a "RR" at the top of each minute. If you cannot copy CW, even at a slow 5 wpm, you might be fooled into think you have heard CFFX. Look at where each person that has reported hearing the CFFX test. Almost no one in the deep south is reporting it. Because CFFX night pattern has almost nothing in our direction, and Cuba on 960, most times, will dominate the frequency. [IRCA] CFFX-960 Test... Any Best Hopeless Attempt Award?
OK Saul, Your disparaging remarks about my SRF-59 have caught my undivided attention. Actually, the unit did quite well on 960, receiving about four stations, whose signals unfortunately combined to produce a toxic QRM mix similar to 1340, or 1400. If I were like Rob Ross of London, Ontario (SRF-59 Supreme Fanatic), I would have wasted no time trying to dig them all out, and add them to my log. The big problem was "The Fan," in Calgary. Hearing "The Fan" about five times on the SRF-59 (from this station blocking the way to Ontario) reminded me of a slang expression of something "hitting the fan," which is exactly what this whole experience of trying for Ontario with a west coast SRF-59 turned out to be like. 73, Gary **Start the year off right.
