Well I learnt this the hard way when I wanted to create a group on Yahoo.
Everything went well until the word verification. I was shocked to see that
Yahoo requires you to complete the word verification each time you want to
do something, like set up a group. How come Google isn't like this? Can't
Yahoo trust their customers enough, or what?

I have used AOL free webmail when I couldn't download my imap mail and it
works as about as well as any. If you (or anyone else on the list) would
like I'd be happy to provide instructions on how to navigate the interface
as best as I know how.

And as for Yahoo, the only thing I dislike is there use of word
 verification
to complete an increasing number of things on there site, and them not
providing an audio verification like AOL and some of the others do. I
personally would just assume do the word verification myself using audio
then have to call into customer service (or however they do it) every time
 I
want to do something major. Example: Creating a yahoogroup, etc.

Once it is all configured Yahoo mail would be a good alternative in my
opinion at least. I have gone web mail for over a year now, but it is
connected to my web domain, although I thought of Yahoo mail at first.
 Then
we decided since we're paying for the domain name and web space to go
 that
way instead of paying another $20 a year for Yahoo which is really
inexpensive if you think about it.

[JAWS-Users] PC Maintenance XP Home

2007-08-18 Thread Margaret Thomas
Hi All,

It had been way too long since I performed PC maintenance on this
XP Home with SP 2 machine using JAWS 7.0 and all the steps don't come
trippingly off my fingers since I had Norton SystemWorks 2005 on my
Win 98 machine and on the XP until about March when NSW was up renewal
and my understanding that the 2007 versions of Norton products weren't
accessible and my tech installed AVG. So, I was used to the Disk
Doctor and Speed Disk Utilities with NSW, which is why the XP Scan
Disc and Defrag haven't come easily.

I believe I was able to complete the process using Denny's
instructions on the home page for the list, but I ran into problems
last night and am hoping I was just too tired when I started the
procedures.

All went well until I got to Check Disc. Denny's instructions
say:

 3. Check Disc

The check disc should be performed before a scan disc is
performed. To do this, go to the start menu and then to, run.

When the edit box appears, type in: chkdsk /f and press enter. You
will be presented with a dialogue that says, the check disc cannot be
performed because

the volume is in use. Would you like to perform this the next time
your system starts? Just type the letter Y and press enter.

Now you will need to shut down any open applications and
restart your PC. When it begins to boot up and before Windows starts,
your PC will

perform a check disc. It will take a few minutes to perform, but when
it is finished, Windows will start up normally.

When I attempted the steps, XP started the checking process before
I had a chance to re-start the machine and I'm just about positive it
did the same thing the last time I tried it.

The next problem was with scan disk where Denny says:

 4. Scan Disc

Windows XP doesn’t have an actual scan disc, but it does
have something relatively close to it.

To run scan disc, go to your desk top and then to, My
Computer. If you aren’t using the classic start menu, you might have
to go to your start

menu and then to My Computer there.

Open My Computer and highlight your C drive, sometimes
called, Local Disc C. Don’t press enter, just highlight it. Now do
an alt enter to

bring up the properties. Next do a control tab to the Tools tab.

You will be on, errors checking, check now button. Press
your spacebar and it will say, Start Button, but don’t press enter
yet. Instead,

tab to the check boxes and check, automatically fix files system
errors and the next check box which is, scan for and attempt recovery
of bad sectors.

Check both of the boxes. Now tab to the start button and press enter.

You will be presented with a dialogue saying that the
disc check cannot pbe performed because the disc check needs exclusive
access to some

files. Do you want to schedule a disc check the next time you start
Windows? Just press your spacebar on yes. Now tab to OK and press
enter. Alt f4

out of the properties and shut down any open applications and restart
your PC.
Just press your spacebar on yes. Now tab to OK and press enter. Alt
f4

out of the properties and shut down any open applications and restart
your PC.

Does perform the checking process with JAWS silent? Everything
went okay until I got to
It may take as long as an hour for this process to
complete, depending on the size of your hard drive and how many errors
you have, but be

Patient and Windows will restart once the process is complete. I
attempted the steps twice leaving more than an hour the first time and
more than 4 hours the second time and JAWS wouldn't speak at all
either time except for saying ALT-F4 when I tried it. A slightly
weird thing is that the Insert key on the num pad hasn't been working
since I tried the scan disc and I've rebooted. The insert key on the
six pack works and num lock is off. I haven't been able to get a new
keyboard since I have had to wiggle waggle keys from time to time to
get them to respond and it could be strictly coincidental that the
insert key in the num pad isn't responding now.

Am I just missing something in Denny's instructions?

Thank you,

Margaret

Margaret,
When you type in, chkdsk /f, or you leaving a space between the chkdsk and
the /f?
As for the sccan disc, you said that you heard Jaws talking when you did the
alt f4. Actually, Jaws shouldn't speak at all until after the scan disc
process is completed since Windows doesn't load until it is.
It sounds like 1 of a couple of things is happening.
One, either you didn't restart your computer after starting the scan disc
process, or two, it ran through the process after restart and Windows loaded
and you didn't realize it.
Do you hear the Windows shut down sound when you do a restart?

[JAWS-Users] Skype vs. SkypeWatch?

2007-08-18 Thread Lennie Rinaldi
Hi All,

I am a little confused. Is there a difference between Skype and
SkypeWatch? I am currently using an older version of Skype and I want
to upgrade to a newer version. I am only interested in connecting
with friends using just the basic that my old version provides for me now.

So, I guess that what I am asking, can I just upgrade to the basic
without SkypeWatch and what is SkypeWatch anyway?

Thanks for any help.

2007-08-18 Thread Chris Hallsworth
SkypeWatch is part of the JAWS support for Skype. When you install Skype
scripts, there's a feature that allows JAWS to monitor contact status
changes etc. This is known as Skypewatch. So yes, you can upgrade to the
latest version and never be affected by what you want to use it for. Hope
that helps.

2007-08-18 Thread Margaret Thomas
Denny,

I got the chkdsk /f to work this time. I have egg on my face
since I thought I had dutifully cut and pasted the command as it
appears on the tips and tricks page, however I have punctuation turned
off and a bit of a hearing problem and only got the chkdsk and not the
rest of it.

I think I got the scan disk to work this time and tried defrag.
No luck; I got an error:

Microsoft Management Console
MMC cannot open the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\dfrg.msc.graphic 580
This may be because the file does not exist, is not an MMC console, or
was created by
a later version of MMC. This
may also be because you do not have sufficient access rights to the
file.
OK

I have administrator rights on the computer.

Thanks for any ideas on what I might be messing up now.

As for the sccan disc, you said that you heard Jaws talking when you

process is completed since Windows doesn't load until it is.
It sounds like 1 of a couple of things is happening.
One, either you didn't restart your computer after starting the scan

Do you hear the Windows shut down sound when you do a restart?

Subject: [JAWS-Users] PC Maintenance XP Home

Hi All,

It had been way too long since I performed PC maintenance on this
XP
Home with SP 2 machine using JAWS 7.0 and all the steps don't come
trippingly off my fingers since I had Norton SystemWorks 2005 on my
Win 98
machine and on the XP until about March when NSW was up renewal and my
understanding that the 2007 versions of Norton products weren't
accessible
and my tech installed AVG. So, I was used to the Disk Doctor and
Speed Disk
Utilities with NSW, which is why the XP Scan Disc and Defrag haven't
come
easily.

I believe I was able to complete the process using Denny's
instructions
on the home page for the list, but I ran into problems last night and
am
hoping I was just too tired when I started the procedures.

All went well until I got to Check Disc. Denny's instructions
say:

 3. Check Disc

The check disc should be performed before a scan disc is
performed. To do this, go to the start menu and then to, run.

When the edit box appears, type in: chkdsk /f and press enter. You
will be
presented with a dialogue that says, the check disc cannot be
performed
because

the volume is in use. Would you like to perform this the next time
your
system starts? Just type the letter Y and press enter.

Now you will need to shut down any open applications and
restart your PC. When it begins to boot up and before Windows starts,
your
PC will

perform a check disc. It will take a few minutes to perform, but when
it is
finished, Windows will start up normally.

When I attempted the steps, XP started the checking process before
I had
a chance to re-start the machine and I'm just about positive it did
the same
thing the last time I tried it.

The next problem was with scan disk where Denny says:

 4. Scan Disc

Windows XP doesn’t have an actual scan disc, but it does
have
something relatively close to it.

To run scan disc, go to your desk top and then to, My
Computer.
If you aren’t using the classic start menu, you might have to go to
your
start

menu and then to My Computer there.

Open My Computer and highlight your C drive, sometimes
called,
Local Disc C. Don’t press enter, just highlight it. Now do an alt
enter to

bring up the properties. Next do a control tab to the Tools tab.

You will be on, errors checking, check now button. Press
your
spacebar and it will say, Start Button, but don’t press enter yet.
Instead,

tab to the check boxes and check, automatically fix files system
errors and
the next check box which is, scan for and attempt recovery of bad
sectors.

Check both of the boxes. Now tab to the start button and press enter.

You will be presented with a dialogue saying that the
disc
check cannot pbe performed because the disc check needs exclusive
access to
some

files. Do you want to schedule a disc check the next time you start
Windows? Just press your spacebar on yes. Now tab to OK and press
enter.
Alt f4

out of the properties and shut down any open applications and restart
your
PC.
Just press your spacebar on yes. Now tab to OK and press enter. Alt
f4

out of the properties and shut down any open applications and restart
your
PC.

[JAWS-Users] JAWS Sluggishness Problem - Fixed!

2007-08-18 Thread AMTK161
Hello everyone,

I posted earlier about JAWS being sluggish in responding for typing echo and
when using keyboard navigation.

Well, when I was looking on Freedom Scientific's website at JAWS Technical
Notices and fixes (for nothing in particular, I saw the link on the JAWS-Users
tips and tricks page and thought I'd take a look) I came across something about
JAWS being sluggish with keyboard echo and navigation in Windows Vista. So I
went to that page to see what FS had to say on the topic and they said that
some computers with the Sigma Tel Audio Codec exhibited said problems, and that
the way to fix it was to download an updated driver.

Well I don't have the Sigma Tel Audio Codec, that I know of; I have a Realtec
High Definition audio card, so I thought What the heck, and went to the
Realtec website and downloaded the updated driver. Installing the updated
driver required sighted assistance (or a Braille display/external synthesizer,
if you have one), as the installer was going to uninstall the old driver before
installing the update. When my computer restarted, JAWS for some reason wanted
to re-activate the authorization; I let it and when it was done I realized that
the problem was fixed!

I just wanted to post this information so that anyone else on the list who is
having this problem has something to go on for fixing it. My advice would be
to go onto the website of your sound card manufacturer and try and get an
updated driver just as I did. To the webmasters of the JAWS-Users list, I'd
strongly recommend putting a link to FS's notice on your website as this seems
to be a problem a lot of people are having.

Hope this helps,

Hi Michael.

Thank you very much for this bit of information; it's very useful.

JAWS did the same thing to me regarding the JAWS activation wen I replaced a
sound card on a computer recently. It did that to me once when I installed
an internal wireless card in a laptop. It seems JAWS is pretty quirky when
it comes to things like that. I wish it were not so. I wonder if anyone
knows of a way to prevent deactivation of authorizations on hardware
installation. I'll look into this and post if I find anything.

[JAWS-Users] jaws deactivation and hardware

2007-08-18 Thread Tony Hernandez
Question:

Why would JAWS run fine with a properly activated ILM license, then suddenly
start asking for activation and run in 40 minute mode?

Answer:

A properly activated Internet License Manager (ILM) based license may cease to
work if:
* You are using a network license and the network connection is down.
* You choose Remove Product Activation from the Start Menu, Programs, JAWS,
Tools menu.
* You change an important hardware component.

The Freedom Scientific Internet License Manager (ILM) activation scheme relates
directly to the identity, or fingerprint, of your computer. Changing certain
hardware components can modify the unique computer fingerprint. For many
hardware changes, such as installing a new video card, you can simply reactivate
your ILM license by selecting Update Authorization from the JAWS Help menu.
Some hardware changes require more than simply reactivating your license and
this document provides you with information on dealing with this situation.
These changes include the following:

A. You install a new hard drive and port the current drive image to the new
drive.
B. The size of the drive or drive partition where Windows is installed changes.
C. Any of the following items existed when you last activated your license, but
no longer exist now:
* IDE device
* Video adapter card
* Sound adapter card
* CD-ROM drive (desktop only)
* PCMCIA adapter card (laptop only)
* Windows Product Activation file (Windows XP only)

If any of the above hardware changes, with JAWS 6.10 or later you are asked to
reactivate your license after the hardware change. After you reactivate your
license, JAWS runs as expected. You do not need to perform the process below.

If you are using JAWS 6.0 or 5.10, and the above hardware changes, you must
remove the currently stored activation information using the FSLicenseClean
utility.

1. Press WINDOWS Key+R.
2. Type or copy and paste one of the command strings listed below. Be sure to
type the quotation marks and the spaces. If your Freedom Scientific product
activation files are stored on a drive other than C, substitute the appropriate
drive letter.

For a local license with JAWS 6.0:
C:\Program Files\Freedom Scientific\Activator\1.1\FsLicenseClean.exe jaws 0 1

For a network license on a designated license server with JAWS 6.0:
C:\Program Files\Freedom Scientific\Activator\1.1\FsLicenseClean.exe jaws 1 1

For a local license with JAWS 5.1:
C:\Program Files\Freedom Scientific\Activator\1.0\FsLicenseClean.exe jaws 0 1

For a network license on a designated license server with JAWS 5.1:
C:\Program Files\Freedom Scientific\Activator\1.0\FsLicenseClean.exe jaws 1 1

3. Press ENTER. The next time you start JAWS, the activation process begins and
you can reactivate the license as requested.
This information specifically applies to a limited set of products using
Internet License Manager (ILM) based activation, available from Freedom
Scientific
starting Fall 2004. This information does not affect products using dongle and
Quella (3.5 diskette based) authorization methods.

[JAWS-Users] Problem With Say All and JAWS 8.0

 Hello everyone,

I have noticed since I have installed JAWS8.0 on 3 different computers (2

down key slows down speech and the page up increases speech.

I checked FS's technical notices archive all the way through 09/21/2007

 supposed
to be this way? If not, does anyone know how I can fix this?

 Thanks much,

2007-08-18 Thread Dale Leavens
This is normal behavior for Jaws and has been for many versions, I think
since the first one I owned, 2.something.

You have to stop Jaws reading then page up or down to move through the text.

Hope this helps.

Yes this appears to happen on my Windows XP machine running JAWS 8,
and page up/down with the say all increases/decreases the speed of the
voice. If you look in the JAWS help, then I'm sure it will tell you.
 Hope that helps.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Problem With Say All and JAWS 8.0

 Hello everyone,

I have noticed since I have installed JAWS8.0 on 3 different computers
 (2
XP computers and now this Windows Vista) that when in say all, the page
down key slows down speech and the page up increases speech.

I checked FS's technical notices archive all the way through 09/21/2007
(Before JAWS 8.0) and there is no mention of this problem. Is it
 supposed
to be this way? If not, does anyone know how I can fix this?

 Thanks much,

 Michael

  Hi Michael.

Thank you very much for this bit of information; it's very useful.

JAWS did the same thing to me regarding the JAWS activation wen I replaced
  a
sound card on a computer recently. It did that to me once when I
  installed
an internal wireless card in a laptop. It seems JAWS is pretty quirky
  when
it comes to things like that. I wish it were not so. I wonder if anyone

Subject: [JAWS-Users] JAWS Sluggishness Problem - Fixed!

  Hello everyone,

I posted earlier about JAWS being sluggish in responding for typing echo
  and
  when using keyboard navigation.

Well, when I was looking on Freedom Scientific's website at JAWS Technical
Notices and fixes (for nothing in particular, I saw the link on the
JAWS-Users tips and tricks page and thought I'd take a look) I came across
something about JAWS being sluggish with keyboard echo and navigation in
Windows Vista. So I went to that page to see what FS had to say on the
topic and they said that some computers with the Sigma Tel Audio Codec
exhibited said problems, and that the way to fix it was to download an
  updated driver.

Well I don't have the Sigma Tel Audio Codec, that I know of; I have a
Realtec High Definition audio card, so I thought What the heck, and went
to the Realtec website and downloaded the updated driver. Installing the
updated driver required sighted assistance (or a Braille display/external
synthesizer, if you have one), as the installer was going to uninstall the
old driver before installing the update. When my computer restarted, JAWS
for some reason wanted to re-activate the authorization; I let it and when
it was done I realized that the problem was fixed!

I just wanted to post this information so that anyone else on the list who
is having this problem has something to go on for fixing it. My advice
would be to go onto the website of your sound card manufacturer and try
  and
get an updated driver just as I did. To the webmasters of the JAWS-Users
list, I'd strongly recommend putting a link to FS's notice on your website
as this seems to be a problem a lot of people are having.

  Hope this helps,

Re: [JAWS-Users] Skype vs. SkypeWatch?

2007-08-18 Thread Rick Harmon
Skype watch announces various contact changes occuring on skype. example
when someone comes online or goes away skype watch will announce that. You
do not need to worry about it if you don't want it don't use it. It has no
effect on the skype scripts at all otherwise.

Hi,

So what you are saying that SkypeWatch is used primarily for chatting
and not receiving calls from a friend using a microphone?

 Hi All,

I am a little confused. Is there a difference between Skype and
SkypeWatch? I am currently using an older version of Skype and I want
to upgrade to a newer version. I am only interested in connecting
with friends using just the basic that my old version provides for me
 now.

So, I guess that what I am asking, can I just upgrade to the basic
without SkypeWatch and what is SkypeWatch anyway?

 Thanks for any help.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Problem With Say All and JAWS 8.0

2007-08-18 Thread Chris Hallsworth
Think it started in 3.7 mate. You have to actually start say all before you
can use page up/down to increase/decrease the voice rate. You can also do it
without say all, but using control alt page up (increase voice rate) and
control alt page down (decrease voice rate). Another one of those rare
keystrokes there for you to try smiles.

This is normal behavior for Jaws and has been for many versions, I think
since the first one I owned, 2.something.

You have to stop Jaws reading then page up or down to move through the
 text.

 Hope this helps.

Yes this appears to happen on my Windows XP machine running JAWS 8, and
 page
up/down with the say all increases/decreases the speed of the voice. If
 you
look in the JAWS help, then I'm sure it will tell you.

 Michael
