 What's the Jaws dump command?
I'm considering buying a new computer, and I'm wondering what the
 advantages
are of Vista over xp, other than maybe better security.

The latest version is, 8.0.2173 .
I can't tell you anything about installing Vista since the machine I use
 Vista on came that way.
I can tell you that Jaws works well with Vista though. The only problem I
have had is with Office 2007 causing Jaws to lock up sometimes. But the
Jaws dump command seems to fix that.
The only drawback to Vista are the drivers for some of my peripheral
 products.
But for the most part, I am beginning to like Vista, it's just a whole new
 learning process.

 Hello Listers:

I am one of those who joined the list after reading Dean Martineau's
newsletter last week and I like what I have read so far.

At present I am using JAWS 7.500 and on inquiring about how Vista works
 from
a number of sources I am getting mixed signals, e.g., leave it alone for a
while as there are a number of bugs which need to be fixed. Another
 comment
I got was that when installing Vista sometimes the installation is aborted
and the process needs to be restarted.

The latest version of JAWS is 8.0.2317 (or is it 71? and as your list
appears to have quite a number of experts, please let me have the benefit
 of
 your advice and comments.

Another thing: I hear that JAWS 9 is due some time this month. Anyway, I
look forward to hearing from you all.

[JAWS-Users] XP versus Vista

2007-09-11 Thread David Griffith
Dear List

I am to be supplied with a new PC to assist with my studies.

I currently have a Pentium 3.06 with 1 GB Ram running XP Pro and Jaws 8.
This is 6 years old and has become very unstable despite a number of
attempted software and hardware remedies so I am getting a new machine.

I am to be supplied with a 1.8 g dual core processor with2 GB of ram as a
replacement. The assessment specifies that Vista be removed and that XP be
installed in the belief that Jaws will work better with this setup.

I am happy to use XP but do the list agree with this? Will Vista support the
dual core processor better for example? I am slightly concerned about the
apparent fall in processor speed on what I have already so if Vista supports
dual core better this may be an issue. I am not aware of any features in
Vista that will be of particular interest to a Jaws user apart from this.

Thanks for any feedback.

Regards

David

Thank you for your reply. Yes, navigating to this dialog box is what I've
been doing, but I was hoping that there was a shorter way of accomplishing
this. I need to combine portions of 3 different Excel files, and I am
having problems with the varying column widths. I think that I have
approximately 45 cells that I need to check their width, and that is if I
only check it once per cell/column.

To find your column width, try this:
hold down Alt, then press O, to open format menu, then C, it says column
then W, it says the default width of column which is 8.43, then release Alt
key.
Press backspace if you want to delete the default settings to change your
desired width.
I'm still in Jaws 3.7 and Office 2000 and I don't have problem navigating

Hope this help.

With the cursor in the column you want to know about, press

Just to elaborate a little more.

A wireless and a WIFY are the same, a wireless radio which will send and
receive data to and from your computer.

A broadband card might refer to a network card more commonly attached to
the network through a RJ45 connector. This is not wireless but an Ethernet
 direct connect adapter..

Many laptop, otherwise known as notebook computers will have both types of
network adapter, particularly those built over the past four or five
 years.

The wireless standards have evolved from 811B and 811G there was an
earlier standard a ## I just now forget. The 811B goes up to 11.0 MBPS
 the 811G to 56.0 MBPS.

The network card standards usually seen are Ethernet 10 or 100 MBPS. Again
in a notebook these are usually standard along with a standard telephone
type jack to accommodate the built-in modem.

There are other wireless modes in many notebooks, probably most now, one
is the Infrared wireless adapter the other a Bluetooth wireless radio
frequency adapter. These differ in that you don't use them as part of the
network in the usual sense of that term, they are used to communicate with
peripherals wirelessly. Files can be transferred and address books
synchronized through these devices, things like cell phones, PDAs and
wireless headphones are the more usual connections made with those
 wireless cards.

Hope this doesn't just muddy the waters further.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Question about wireless cards, and broad band access cards.

2007-09-11 Thread Dale Leavens
Correct, I realized that after.

Sorry for any confusion.

There are other standards of course some of which will give you more range but
you need to instal an alternative card in the computer and it will not usually
have a mode compatible with the more standard WIFY found around public access
points.

Using public WIFY isn't necessarily transparent, they usually have some sort of
access key often posted in the coffee shop and changed at regular intervals or
available from the Hotel Reception Desk.

You will often find unprotected points though outside of homes and offices or
in various apartment buildings which can be used. Very often thy do not have
any encryption or other protection. I don't protect my connection here, I
suspect one neighbour does use it and I don't mind having often used those of
others and been grateful for their availability in the past.

earlier standard a ## I just now forget.

This is a little off topic but just kind of on the edge. Never the less a
wireless card is just exactly that, it doesn't require a wire to connect
 it
up to your outer. It is a broad band card just like a wired card, so in
 that
respect there's no difference. I must say these are very good questions
 well
 phrased.

With the cursor in the column you want to know about, press
  insert-f1-f1. That is, hold down insert---the Jawskey--and press f1
twice quickly. You will hear a ton of information in a virtual
window, and the width of the cell will be a part of it. Press
escape to escape the virtual window and return to your text.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Finding out column width in excel

2007-09-11 Thread Darrin Porter
Annette,

I am an engineer and use Excel daily (office 2003 /JFW 8). Excel
measures everything in points (printer's points). In JFW 8, pressing
insert-f twice quickly will describe the atributes of the active cell to
you in a dialogue box. One of the pieces of information provided is the
height and width of the cell in points, e.g., cell dimentions are 54
points wide by 12 points heigh. The number of characters you can fit
in 54 points depends on the font you have selected.

All cells in a column must be the same width. That's why there is no
way to individually adjust the width of a cell.

It is a quirk of Excel that you can enter a column width in number of
characters instead of points I guess this makes it easier for some
people. But, for the purposes of laying out a page, the only way you
will be able to know if everything fits widthwise is to add up the
active column widths in points. For a typical portrait layout with
3/4-in. margins, you have a total width of 432 points to work with. For
a landscape layout with the same margins, you have a total of 684 points
to work with.

Hope this clears things up for you.

One final note, in earlier versions of JAWS, you only need to press
insert-f once to hear the cell's attributes.

This is a little off topic but just kind of on the edge. Never the less a
wireless card is just exactly that, it doesn't require a wire to connect
 it
up to your outer. It is a broad band card just like a wired card, so in
 that
respect there's no difference. I must say these are very good questions
 well
 phrased.

peripherals wirelessly. Files can be transferred and address books
synchronized through these devices, things like cell phones, PDAs and
wireless headphones are the more usual connections made with those
 wireless cards.

Hope this doesn't just muddy the waters further.

This is a little off topic but just kind of on the edge. Never the less
 a
wireless card is just exactly that, it doesn't require a wire to connect
 it
up to your outer. It is a broad band card just like a wired card, so in
 that
respect there's no difference. I must say these are very good questions
 well
 phrased.

Estelita,
With the older jaws I think you need to go into the configuration
manager by pressing insert F2.
Then go to alt S for settings. Go to Synthesizor, then make sure that
allow wav files is checked. Go to OK and save.

First, be sure that you are hearing JAWS8 not JAWS7. If you remain sure
that you are hearing JAWS8, then you should also be sure to make a hot key
for your JAWS7. then, go to where you have the shortcut for JAWS8, hit
alt-enter to get into its properties, tab to the edit field, and where is
says ctrl-alt-j delete it and leave field empty (saying None).

Re: [JAWS-Users] need help uninstalling a clock.

2007-09-11 Thread Siobhan
Hi. It sounds like that might be spyware, do you remember where you got it
from? This is why I hate anything but what's on my system. You probably
want to go and do a spy scan, virus scan, and also click on the system tray
icon to see if you can click exit or end. Try looking in your processes tab
and shuttig that down also Hope that helps somewhat.

Help please. I have a clock on my computer that i installed a few weeks
ago. The name of the clock is clocksdnexe. I wanted to uninstall it, so, I
went to the control panel and to add and remove programs. I entered on the
clock. Tabbed to uninstall and hit the button. The clock or parts of the
clock is still in my systems tray. I think it might be the clock sounds or
at least how to set the sounds. You can choose the clock you want to use
and how many times you would like the clock to go off in an hour. I looked
in the c drive under programs and the clock or parts of it is still there.
I tried to delete it with the delete key, but that didn't work. It said
that i need to make sure that the program is not in use. I'm running jaws
7, windows x p pro, and internet 6. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Remember, Microsoft doesn't support Windows 98 now, so be very careful about

Yeah, I did this, but the problem is the latest Win media player was
fighting with my Win 98, so we uninstalled it and my husband installed the
old Nero player and it works fine now.
Thank you nice people for your help.

 Estelita,
With the older jaws I think you need to go into the configuration
 manager by pressing insert F2.
Then go to alt S for settings. Go to Synthesizor, then make sure that
allow wav files is checked. Go to OK and save.

Hi Estelita,
If what you have serves your needs, then by all means hang on to it for as long
as you can.
I still have a machine with Jaws3.7 and Win98SE, and actually prefer it over
the latest and
greatest.
It is the most stable combination that I have so far.

Re: [JAWS-Users] XP versus Vista

2007-09-11 Thread Joseph Lee
Hi David,
I'll happy to explain this situation for you:
First of all, I'd like to inform that I've done a podcast on this
very matter (Dual Core processors) located at Blind Cool Tech
website (for more info, check it out).
In terms of operating system, I'd say that it depends. I agree
that Vista supports dual core (and even quad core) processors
better than XP, but XP is as stable as Vista when you have dual
core CPU. I personally use a Windows Vista laptop with Core Solo
processor (a dual core processor that has one core disabled) with
JAWS 8.0.2173. Also, in terms of JAWS, XP might be useful, since
FS supports Vista from JAWS 8.0.1163 onwards (earlier versions of
JAWS such as 7.0.135 will not work under Vista). So the question
is this: if you have JAWS 8.0.2173 or later and if you are forced
to use Vista, then that'll be it. If you have JAWS 8.0.423 or
earlier, use XP. But since you indicated that you're planning to
use XP instead of Vista, then any version of JAWS (specifically
JAWS 4.5 or later should support XP) should work.
In terms of processor speed, I know what you are talking about,
except that it is the other way around. Dual core processors
runs much faster than single core counterparts. Let us now
imagine a scienario with two computers. Both have XP and both
have Intel CPU's. One computer has Intel Pentium 4 at 3.2 GHz
and the other has Intel Core II duo at 1.86 GHz. From a casual
view, one concludes that Computer a performs much faster than
Computer b. No, it is the other way around: Computer b runs
faster than Computer a because of the following: Since Dual Core
processors have two CPU cores on the unit, it can run twice more
processes/programs at once as opposed to single core which can
only concentrate on one task. This is useful especially if you
run JAWS and other tasks, since one core can deal with jfw.exe
while the other core can deal with another process that JAWS is
currently on focus such as Microsoft Word, Internet Explorer, and
so forth. So you can think of dual core processors as a CPU
with two processor cores). Even though the speed seems to be
slow at first glance, it is extremely fast, especially for
program like JAWS which uses vast amount of processing power.
Since this is a mailing list for a specific product, I won't go
into my own stats for CPU and so forth (this kind of question is
best suited in a list like Blind Computing).
Cheers,
Joseph

Re: [JAWS-Users] Finding out column width in excel

2007-09-11 Thread Annette Carr
Thank you very much for that info. I did not know about the Insert+f+f
command, nor have I ever been able to correlate points and inches, so the
info you provided will prove to be helpful.

After reading your message I tried out the Insert+f+f command and found out
that when you execute it on a set of merged cells, it still tells you only
the points for the single cell, and not for the entire height and width.
Have you found this to be the case?. Any ideas how to work around this?

Annette,

I am an engineer and use Excel daily (office 2003 /JFW 8). Excel measures
everything in points (printer's points). In JFW 8, pressing insert-f twice
quickly will describe the atributes of the active cell to you in a dialogue
box. One of the pieces of information provided is the height and width of
the cell in points, e.g., cell dimentions are 54 points wide by 12 points
heigh. The number of characters you can fit in 54 points depends on the
font you have selected.

All cells in a column must be the same width. That's why there is no way to
individually adjust the width of a cell.

It is a quirk of Excel that you can enter a column width in number of
characters instead of points I guess this makes it easier for some people.
But, for the purposes of laying out a page, the only way you will be able to
know if everything fits widthwise is to add up the active column widths in
points. For a typical portrait layout with 3/4-in. margins, you have a
total width of 432 points to work with. For a landscape layout with the
same margins, you have a total of 684 points to work with.

Hope this clears things up for you.

One final note, in earlier versions of JAWS, you only need to press insert-f
once to hear the cell's attributes.

Insert+F is the command in JAWS 7.x, and Insert+f+f is the command in JAWS

measurement system, but I still don't know the correlation between the 2
different types of measurements in Excel.

the units used for column width?

 Am

I've read over quite a bit in the JAWS help and could not find out

With the cursor in the column you want to know about, press
  insert-f1-f1. That is, hold down insert---the Jawskey--and press f1
twice quickly. You will hear a ton of information in a virtual
window, and the width of the cell will be a part of it. Press
escape to escape the virtual window and return to your text.

Insert-f1 gives you a document summary, including the width of the
cell in the table where your cursor is.

With the cursor in the column you want to know about, press
   insert-f1-f1. That is, hold down insert---the Jawskey--and press f1
twice quickly. You will hear a ton of information in a virtual

In both JAWS 7.x and 8.x, Insert+F1 does not provide any information about
column width. It appears that in JAWS 7.x, Insert+F includes info on the
size of the cell, and in JAWS 8.x the command is Insert+F+F for this same
info.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 3.7 problem with sound card

2007-09-11 Thread carlene knight
Yeh, I agree.

As an example, I can remember having Windows 98, and an older version of
JAWS, perhaps 3.7. JAWS worked so well with the media player at the
time that it told me what CD I was playing, the artist, the tracks,
ETC. You can't get that now, as far as I can tell. XP crashes less,
but I sure miss that feature.

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Finding out column width in excel

 Annette,

I am an engineer and use Excel daily (office 2003 /JFW 8). Excel measures
everything in points (printer's points). In JFW 8, pressing insert-f
twice
quickly will describe the atributes of the active cell to you in a
dialogue
box. One of the pieces of information provided is the height and width of
the cell in points, e.g., cell dimentions are 54 points wide by 12 points
heigh. The number of characters you can fit in 54 points depends on the
 font you have selected.

All cells in a column must be the same width. That's why there is no way
to
individually adjust the width of a cell.

It is a quirk of Excel that you can enter a column width in number of
characters instead of points I guess this makes it easier for some
people.
But, for the purposes of laying out a page, the only way you will be able
to
know if everything fits widthwise is to add up the active column widths in
points. For a typical portrait layout with 3/4-in. margins, you have a
total width of 432 points to work with. For a landscape layout with the
same margins, you have a total of 684 points to work with.

Hope this clears things up for you.

One final note, in earlier versions of JAWS, you only need to press
insert-f
once to hear the cell's attributes.
