Re: [JAWS-Users] free spell checking programs

2007-09-13 Thread Sarah
the spell checker that comes with MSWord is pretty good so you don't need one.
Now if you are talking in other fields of study I
don't know.

Re: [JAWS-Users] want to learn about tab browsing and jaws

2007-09-13 Thread Joseph Lee
Hi Joanne,
Tab browsing is a way of displaying multiple websites in a single
Internet Explorer window. It works similar to multipage dialog
that you see with file properties, settings under Control Panel
and so forth. From a visual point of view, the title for each
website in a given IE7 session is represented by a tab (similar
to multipage dialog). To move between websites in tab order,
press CTRL plus TAB (same as multipage dialog). To move
backwards, press CTRL plus Shift plus TAB.
If we go into technical point of view, it does the following:
The program executable for IE7 is ieframe.dll (or iexplorer.exe_.
When it is started, it starts a thread, loads the home page that
is set under Tools/Option. (a thread is a subcode of a program
that is a part of a program; thus, it shares same memory space as
parent program) When a user presses CTRL plus t to open a new
webpage in a new tab, IE starts a new thread by displaying a new
webpage called "About Tabs." This website tells you more about
how Tab browsing works and how to move between "page tabs". When
you press CTRL plus TAB, the focus moves between websites (just
like Alt plus TAB, except that it is same program session; unlike
CTRL plus TAB, Alt plus TAB moves focus from one program window
to another). After you are done, press CTRL plus f4 (CTRL plus
w). This tells IE to shutdown the thread that opened the new
page in a new tab.
Hope it explains in simple language. If it was too deep for you
(or any others), let me know.
Cheers,
Joseph

>I've had Internet Explorer 7 but admit I don't really understand
its layout. I'm using Jaws 8 and am not understanding this tab
browsing concept and how to make it work with Jaws. Is there a
help or tutorial somewhere explaining this? I don't understand
why, every time I enter on a Web page, I'm partially on the page
but partially still on my home page. Rather confusing so hope
there's a help out there for those of us wanting to learn it.

Re: [JAWS-Users] creating a folder

2007-09-13 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Mike,

I don't think you're doing anything wrong, just doing it differently than
other people do, that's all.

Who knows, maybe Joanne will decide to use your method, and find that she is
better off with it, or just the opposite, use your method and reinforce what
she was using before because she doesn't like it.

It's just each individual's choice on how they do it.

Victor

Re: [JAWS-Users] creating a folder

2007-09-13 Thread Mike Meaney
Victor,
Am I getting something wrong?
When I tab to list view I press my application key which is three from the
right of the spacebar and arrow down to new folder and enter, there I give
it a name and hit enter. When I want to retrieve it I tab to the list and
hit the first letter of the folder till I get to the one I want.
I don't know what it looks like, but,
what the eye doesn't see the heart doesn't grieve over.

Margaret, to save system resources, leave "open each folder in the same

Hi Dan,
You can use the F5 key to refresh the list anywhere in Windows explorer.
when this is done, nothing in the list is selected, and causes the new
sub-menu, to rise to the top of the file menu.

Hello,
When you first go into the explorer window, as long as the top item
says, "not selected", you can use the file menu with the first choice
being "new"
But, if you move the cursor at all, the position of the "new" under the
file menu goes way down the list.
It's easier to just refresh the list with "alt+V", then R for refresh.
Then go under file for the first choice to be "new".

I have a question about this. My instructor had told me a few years
back that the shortcut key for creating a new folder is alt and F
pressed together, then the letter W by itself, then the letter F by
itself. This used to work like a charm, but now it doesn't always do
the trick. I like to create new folders in my downloads folder for the
DVD's I own and then rip to MP3 format. When I try the alt F, the
letter W and then the letter F, often I'm not right at the edit field
for create new folder. Has this key command changed with Jaws 8?

Hi Dan,
You can use the F5 key to refresh the list anywhere in Windows explorer.
when this is done, nothing in the list is selected, and causes the new
sub-menu, to rise to the top
of the file menu.

Hello,
When you first go into the explorer window, as long as the top item
says, "not selected", you can use the file menu with the first choice
being "new"
But, if you move the cursor at all, the position of the "new" under the
file menu goes way down the list.

Sarah,

That did the trick. I noticed that a bunch of items in "All Users" had
also disappeared and started your instructions at "C" to do the whole hard

Do you know if the radio button for Open each folder in the same window

instructions I had to configure XP to use with JAWS didn't mention it and I
think it's partly where I ran amuck. Open each folder in the same window is

Thanks again,

Re: [JAWS-Users] creating a folder

2007-09-13 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Joanne,

Let's not get too hasty. Smile.

You don't have to stop doing it that way, you just have to be a bit more
patient with your keystrokes. LOL.

One of my biggest mistakes when I first went blind, was thinking that I
could keep doing things as fast as I did when I was sighted. Granted, I
realize that not all people feel that way, but sometimes, patience is a
common universe among society, and we try to do as much as possible at any
given moment.

One thing you can do is use the advice given already, and that was using the
F5 key, just before attempting the alt+F combination, then pressing W, this
way, you're assured of going directly into the New sub-menu, and landing
directly on the folder choice. If you do it that way, then all you would do
is press the F5 key, followed by the alt+F keystroke, then enter twice, as
you are placed right on the folder option

At that point, you'll land in the edit field of the file name and you can
enter the file name at that point.

So, you see, you don't have to completely change your habits, just modify
them. Smile.

All you have to do is goe to the Jaws help by bringing your Jaws in to
folcus, then tap F1 and listen for your help to come up.
You then tap the first tap the letter U and it will take you to Using

Re: [JAWS-Users] creating a folder

2007-09-13 Thread Victor Gouveia
You have to be careful about this, as I have recently discovered.

You can do that method of pressing alt+F then the letter W for New, however,
if a file is highlighted, you may land on another choice for the letter W.

For example, if you have an MP3 file highlighted, and you use that
combination of letters, the first choice you'll land on is add to winamp
playlist, or something like that.

Another thing you have to realize is that sometimes you'll land already in
the new sub-menu, and you find that you've pressed W and landed on another
choice that begins with the letter W.

In my case, it's add to WinRAR archive, followed by WinZip archive and so on
and so forth.

The moral of this story is, listen to what Jaws is saying before just
pressing the letters, otherwise you'll land on something else you may not
want. Smile.

Re: [JAWS-Users] want to learn about tab browsing and jaws

2007-09-13 Thread KURTIS POTTER
If you installed the FS reader and training materials with JAWS, then
there is a hints and tricks tutorial for IE 7 in the what's new for JAWS
8.

>>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 09/13/2007 7:22 AM >>>
I've had Internet Explorer 7 but admit I don't really understand its
layout. I'm using Jaws 8 and am not understanding this tab browsing
concept and how to make it work with Jaws. Is there a help or tutorial
somewhere explaining this? I don't understand why, every time I enter
on a Web page, I'm partially on the page but partially still on my home
page. Rather confusing so hope there's a help out there for those of us
wanting to learn it.

Re: [JAWS-Users] creating a folder

2007-09-13 Thread Dan Malone
Hello,
When you first go into the explorer window, as long as the top item
says, "not selected", you can use the file menu with the first choice
being "new"
But, if you move the cursor at all, the position of the "new" under the
file menu goes way down the list.
It's easier to just refresh the list with "alt+V", then R for refresh.
Then go under file for the first choice to be "new".
HTH, Dan

I have a question about this. My instructor had told me a few years
back that the shortcut key for creating a new folder is alt and F
pressed together, then the letter W by itself, then the letter F by
itself. This used to work like a charm, but now it doesn't always do
the trick. I like to create new folders in my downloads folder for the
DVD's I own and then rip to MP3 format. When I try the alt F, the
letter W and then the letter F, often I'm not right at the edit field
for create new folder. Has this key command changed with Jaws 8?

I just tried it out and it worked perfectly fine, try it again and see what
happens. This is a windows explorer key combination and nothing to do with
jaws so far as key strokes are concerned.

The first choice is folder. You should be good to go at that point.

[JAWS-Users] want to learn about tab browsing and jaws

2007-09-13 Thread Joanne
I've had Internet Explorer 7 but admit I don't really understand its layout.
I'm using Jaws 8 and am not understanding this tab browsing concept and how to
make it work with Jaws. Is there a help or tutorial somewhere explaining this?
I don't understand why, every time I enter on a Web page, I'm partially on the
page but partially still on my home page. Rather confusing so hope there's a
help out there for those of us wanting to learn it.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Finding out column width in excel

I am using Office 2003 and Jaws 7x and 8x. I need to find out the column
width and would like to do it in a faster way then going up to the menu bar,
opening
the column width dialog box and tabbing to that edit box. Is there a JAWS
command for announcing this information? I've tried Insert+Tab+Tab and
Insert+F
and I'm not obtaining the info I need.
Thanks,
Annette

If you end up still not satisfied, remove all the JAWS shortcuts, then make
a new one only for the version you want to start with, at first.
