[JAWS-Users] sound recording problem with hp's dv 6000 series laptops

2008-05-25 Thread dinesh thole
Hello friends, I am dinesh thole from pune.
I have a hp dv6516tx laptop with windows vista.
from the time I have purchased the laptop, I am facing sound recording problem
on the laptop.
the problem is, the recording done on the laptop is not clear
There is humming noise in the baground, after the recorded file is played.

There is disturbance in recording.

This problem is there, whether I do the recording using the internal mike or a
hai quality external mike.

I took the laptop to the service centre and they took the following actions
under the guidance of hp's technical support.

1. They restored the laptop to the factory condition by reinstalling windows
vista home premium through the recovery disks.

They also installed all the latest bios and the audio drivers, and all other
drivers.

they checked the various microphone settings in the realtek high definition
audio options in the control panel.

2. they changed the display panel on which the internal mike is placed.

3. they changed the motherboard on which the realtek high definition audio chip
is there.

4. they compared the recording with hp dv2000 model, which has the conecsant
audio chip.

the recording quality was very good on the dv 2000 model which has the
conecsant audio chip as compared with my laptop.

similar problem was there when they checked with the other laptop of the same
series which had the realtek chip.

hp's service center gave me a service report saying that it is a common problem
with this series laptops.

the senior technical people are saying that this is the limitation of the
laptop, and we can not do anything.

according to me, there is a problem with the realtek high definition audio chip
which they are providing with the hp dv6000 series laptops.

that is why not only my laptop, but all other laptops in the dv6000 series are
also having this problem.

since I need to do audio recording everyday, I am at a disadvantage after
buying this laptop.

I did not know about this problem before buying this laptop. otherwise I would
have bought any other model.

hp is not ready to do anything for me in this case even though there is a
manufacturing defect in the dv6000 series notebooks.

for trial, I recorded on soni, dell, compack laptops. but no laptop is having
such recording problem and the recording quality was very good on these
laptops.

I want to know if any of you is facing this kind of problem with the hp laptop.

also I would like the advice of the members on this list regarding this matter,
and what can I do further.

my laptop is in the warranty period.

also if advisable, I am ready to take this matter to the consumer court,
because just like me, I do not want other members to suffer after investing
good amount of money on these hp laptops.

so any of you are planning to purchase a hp laptop of the dv 6000 series, and
which has the realtek high definition audio chip, and if you are going to use
it for recording, then please check the laptop carefully. and if possible,
please select other model.

I request all the members to give me your valuable opinion and advice on this
matter at the earliest.

thanking you all.

warm regards.

dinesh thole.

[JAWS-Users] New JFW Update with AVG 8; still Having Problems

2008-05-25 Thread Jerry Berrier
Hi all,

I've updated JFW to the latest version that just came out. I'm using AVG
Internet Security version 8. I can now get to the AVG interface and check
my settings, but the AVG interface still crashed when I changed e-mail
scanner settings or firewall settings.

I wonder if I have to re-install AVG now that I've updated JAWS.

Re: [JAWS-Users] New JFW Update with AVG 8; still Having Problems

2008-05-25 Thread amtk161
Hi Jerry,

I am having these types of problems, too. I emailed AVG back in March and
they said that it was a problem with other programs interacting with AVG.
What I've done is upgrade to the latest AVG and that has sort of fixed the
problem... and when a crash happens, just restarted AVG.

Thanks for the heads-up on the new JFW...I eagerly await testing out AVG
with the JAWS issue fixed. Also, if you do reinstall AVG now that you have
the new JFW installed, please let us know how that works?

Thanks
Michael

Re: [JAWS-Users] my window can not automatically log on

2008-05-25 Thread Corien
My Windows is not english and I'm guessing the translation here.
If you go to control panel - UserAccounts
Make sure that there only is one user account.
Disable Guest if there is one, and delete all others (in my case I
deleted ASP.net)

If yours is the only account there, you should automatically log on
without getting a screen with password first.

[JAWS-Users] FREE AVG ANTIVIRUS

2008-05-25 Thread Brian Lee
I thought some of you on the list might be interested in what I found about the
free AVG 8 antivirus program. If you go to www.free.grisoft.com and choose the
link for downloading the free version, you will be taken to a page where the
three versions of AVG are listed. It was quite surprising to me to find out
what the free basic version does not include. It does not include anti-rootkit
detection, it does not provide protection for instant messaging, it does not
screen downloads for malicious content, and it does not give real-time
protection from poisoned web pages. Below is the comparison of AVG Free, AVG
antivirus paid version, and the AVG Internet Security suite as shown on the

Re: [JAWS-Users] my window can not automatically log on

2008-05-25 Thread David
Hi Ming,

I suggest the following.

Go into your Run dialogue box on the Start menu and type

control userpasswords2

then press enter.

You will find yourself in a User Accounts page. You will probably need to
check the first box you are on and then need to type in the following field
your User name. Ok that.

I hope this will work for you. You should now be able to boot up your
system and go straight in.

Best of luck.

David

Re: [JAWS-Users] FREE AVG ANTIVIRUS

2008-05-25 Thread Chris Hallsworth
Hi, this is why I went for Avast; it had more protection features, even the
free home edition had more protection features than AVG Free. The only thing
it won't protect you from with Avast Home is script blocking, but that's
better than what you would be missing with AVG Free. Just my £0.02 worth.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] FREE AVG ANTIVIRUS

I thought some of you on the list might be interested in what I found about
the free AVG 8 antivirus program. If you go to www.free.grisoft.com and
choose the link for downloading the free version, you will be taken to a
page where the three versions of AVG are listed. It was quite surprising
to me to find out what the free basic version does not include. It does
not include anti-rootkit detection, it does not provide protection for
instant messaging, it does not screen downloads for malicious content, and
it does not give real-time protection from poisoned web pages. Below is
the comparison of AVG Free, AVG antivirus paid version, and the AVG
Internet Security suite as shown on the Grisoft site:

Re: [JAWS-Users] Stopping Speech in JFW 8 9

2008-05-25 Thread Chris Hallsworth
Hi, I know that in the latest build of JAWS 9 you can stop JAWS from reading
web pages automatically. This can be set using the Adjust JAWS Options
dialogue box, under the general options category I think. Anyway, look for
document automatically read and press space to turn it off. Then press enter
to save your changes. In terms of OE6, do the above, but look for messages
automatically read and press space to turn it off and press enter. Hope that
helps.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Stopping Speech in JFW 8 9

 Hi All,

JAWS 8.0.2173 and 9.0.2169 work much better
for me with Advanced Find (Control-Shift-F) in OE6 and is better behaved
with combo boxes in IE 7 than JAWS 7.1 did and I'd very much like to be
 able
to use either of them instead of 7.1. However, 8.0.2173 and 9.0.2169
 don't
seem to be stopping as quickly in
OE and IE when I hit Control to stop speech the way it would with 7.1. In
7.1, focus would be placed almost exactly where I stopped speech, but in
 the
two later versions focus is at least at the bottom of the page in IE 7 and
 way below
where I stop speech in OE. For example, at

 http://www.stopyourekillingme.com/index.html

when the page loads, if I hit Control when JAWS speaks the first G link,
 I
land on the copyright notice instead of the G link. If I
am reading a post from this list, for example, I land after the Visit the
JAWS Users List home page at: part.

My verbosity options are set for advanced and it's with XP Home with SP
 2. I looked at the technical support notices on The FS site and old posts
I'd saved about JFW 8 and I didn't see anything. Does anyone have any
 ideas
on how to fix this problem in 8.0.2173and 9.0.2169 ? I repaired JAWS 8
back in April when I first installed it, but it didn't help. My tech used
his cell phone phoned to contact FS' tech support about 8 and I couldn't
hear the other end of the conversation, but he said they didn't offer any
 solutions.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

 Margaret

suppose since it's a forum hosted by the AVG company then we should
 believe
that to be true. But why are some of you getting an inaccessible popup

2008-05-25 Thread Chris Hallsworth
Hi, have you tried Avast Debby? Or is it because you've paid for 7.5 and
therefore you were hoping to upgrade to 8.0? Let me stress that if you've
paid for an antivirus, and you're willing to commit to the yearly payments
usually, then I have no objections. However, if you haven't, then why have
loads of hassles with one free product when there's another one out there
that's much easier to use? Just a thought.

Re: [JAWS-Users] FREE AVG ANTIVIRUS

In my oppinion you can't expect any free version to be as good as the paid
version. Avast isn't rated that well even though the free version might have
more features than free AVG. That's just something to consider. I'm not trying
to start an arguement about which is better though.

[JAWS-Users] AVG, THANK YOU SO MUCH!

2008-05-25 Thread John Justice
Once again, messages on this list have saved me from a real handful of problems
with the new version of AVG. I wanted to take a moment to thank the owners
and the members for being honest and above board about problems they are
having. For the moment, I'm sticking with Windows Live One Care. The only
thing is that I hate establishing a passport if I don't need one. That's
electronic blackmail or even coercion if you ask me. But then, if the program
works with relatively little trouble, I believe it might be worth the
aggravation.

[JAWS-Users] ANTI-VIRUS PROTECTION, FREE VERSIONS

2008-05-25 Thread John Justice
These programs are like the flavors at Baskin Robins, a well known ice-cream
vendor in the U. S. Or, if you prefer, different strokes for different
folks. Chris, you have a real issue with AVG at any time. I must point out
that the best way to get protection from any of these packages is to purchase
the paid for versions. To quote Will Rogers, There ain't no such thing as a
free lunch!
I believe that the manufacturers offer a free version of their products because
they just might encourage someone to buy a better product if they get
reasonable success from the free software. For those who can't afford the
cost, having some kind of free anti-virus protection is worlds better than
having none at all.

However, my concern is about how these versions work with Jaws. Apparently,
Freedom Scientific agrees and they are trying to deal with the conflict between
Jaws and AVG. Why would they do this? Well, for one thing, of all anti-virus
programs available here in the U. S. AVG is rated one of the best. It is also
the one purchased more frequently by computer users. Compared to Avast, AVG
outsells that program at about 25 to 1. Is it a better program in the free
version? Not necessarily. But when it comes to the professional edition,
there are very few programs out there that offer better compatibility and ease
of operation. That was true of AVG until this latest issue. Unfortunately,
AVG seems to have taken a page from the Norton book of dirty tricks and
inadvertently created something which doesn't function with Jaws very well at
all. That should be our primary concern here. I am reading conflicting
messages. Some say that with the new version of Jaws, AVG works fine. Others
say that it still is giving them problems. Before I do something I'm going to
regret, I need to know which is correct.

1. I have loaded the newest version of Jaws.
2. I have uninstalled AVG 7.5 but I have retained the .EXE file and my code
key.
3. If I load AVG 8 now, will it function correctly or will it crash as some
have indicated?

Chris has his opinion about AVG but I'm a bit concerned that he is trumpeting
his personal dislike for the software and ignoring the essential problem we are
having.
The fact is that at the best of times, AVAST is a pain in the neck. Some of
the functions have never been accessible. It might be a fine program but it
has never worked as well as the older versions of AVG where compatibility with
Jaws is concerned. That isn't opinion ladies and gentlemen, it's simple fact.
I am not criticizing AVAST in any way. It just doesn't work that well with
Jaws. That goes for older versions as well as the most current one.

As I said in the beginning, everyone has their preference. I want to find an
anti-virus program with excellent ratings which will work well with Jaws.
That's all people. I'm not interested in creating a fire fight between those
who like AVAST and those who prefer AVG. I just want to know. Don't you?

Hi, all,
Are there any programs that are JAWS-friendly that can help one access/search

These programs are like the flavors at Baskin Robins, a well known
ice-cream vendor in the U. S. Or, if you prefer, different strokes for
different folks. Chris, you have a real issue with AVG at any time. I
must point out that the best way to get protection from any of these
packages is to purchase the paid for versions. To quote Will Rogers,
There ain't no such thing as a free lunch!
I believe that the manufacturers offer a free version of their products
because they just might encourage someone to buy a better product if they
get reasonable success from the free software. For those who can't afford

the cost, having some kind of free anti-virus protection is worlds better
 than having none at all.

However, my concern is about how these versions work with Jaws.
Apparently, Freedom Scientific agrees and they are trying to deal with the

conflict between Jaws and AVG. Why would they do this? Well, for one
thing, of all anti-virus programs available here in the U. S. AVG is rated

one of the best. It is also the one purchased more frequently by computer

users. Compared to Avast, AVG outsells that program at about 25 to 1. Is

it a better program in the free version? Not necessarily. But when it
comes to the professional edition, there are very few programs out there
that offer better compatibility and ease of operation. That was true of
AVG until this latest issue. Unfortunately, AVG seems to have taken a
page from the Norton book of dirty tricks and inadvertently created
something which doesn't function with Jaws very well at all. That should
be our primary concern here. I am reading conflicting messages. Some say

that with the new version of Jaws, AVG works fine. Others say that it
still is giving them problems. Before I do something I'm going to regret,

I need to know which is correct.

 1. I have loaded the newest version of Jaws.
 2. I have uninstalled AVG 7.5 but I have retained the .EXE file and my
 code key.
 3. If I load AVG 8 now, will it function correctly or will it crash as
 some have indicated?

Chris has his opinion about AVG but I'm a bit concerned that he is
trumpeting his personal dislike for the software and ignoring the
 essential problem we are having.
The fact is that at the best of times, AVAST is a pain in the neck.
Some of the functions have never been accessible. It might be a fine
program but it has never worked as well as the older versions of AVG where

compatibility with Jaws is concerned. That isn't opinion ladies and
gentlemen, it's simple fact. I am not criticizing AVAST in any way. It
just doesn't work that well with Jaws. That goes for older versions as
well as the most current one.

Re: [JAWS-Users] FREE AVG ANTIVIRUS

2008-05-25 Thread Brian Lee
Hello Carlene:

When checking ratings for programs some things to consider are when the
tests were done, who performed the tests, and what versions of the programs
were tested. I have read many recent reviews and found many lab tests by
organizations who rate the free versions of antivirus programs showing a
higher rating for the latest version of AVAST than the free AVG 8 and visa
versa. I recently read a CNET editor's review that gave AVAST a better
rating. One recent comparison test showed AVAST detecting 100% of viruses
in the wild. In fact, AVAST has improved their product and recent test
scores, and in some recent lab tests AVG 8 has not done as well. So, in
some tests AVG might be rated higher than AVAST, but in a lot of recent
tests that is not true.

One thing that does concern me about the free AVG version 8 antivirus
program is the lack of rootkit detection. The nature of rootkits make them
so that the usual auto detection part of an antivirus program can not detect
them. Without this protection a system is vulnerable to malicious programs
that act as normal Windows operating system files. AVG did have a free
anti-rootkit program that could be downloaded but I don't know if it is
still available. Also I am not sure it worked on Vista systems.

Take care

In my oppinion you can't expect any free version to be as good as the paid
version. Avast isn't rated that well even though the free version might
have
more features than free AVG. That's just something to consider. I'm not
trying
to start an arguement about which is better though.

Re: [JAWS-Users] ANTI-VIRUS PROTECTION, FREE VERSIONS

2008-05-25 Thread amtk161
That's a shame indeed, David. Does anyone know what exactly Grisoft did to
cause this problem? I'm not surprised that the program still doesn't work
after the new version of JFW...only because I don't think Grisoft is working
cooperatively with FS to fix this.
New and improved...oh brother. There are some great programs out there that
are totally and completely useless to us because they are new and
improved. Take for example Registry Mechanic. It is a great little program;
I'd give it a 9 out of 10 only because I have to use the JAWS cursor to
navigate through everything. Other than that, it is a great program; I'd
like to see JAWS support for Registry Mechanic but I'd like to see it for
AVG first. But when we're talking about accessabillity of programs, I really
shouldn't complain: FS does a heck of a great job. Look at the number of
programs that work well with JAWS...quite a few of them. So, my point
is...I'd like to see support for AVG 8 and to a lesser extent Registry
Mechanic, but we musn't blame FS for that problem...they do a steller job.

For those who can't
 afford

the cost, having some kind of free anti-virus protection is worlds better
 than having none at all.

However, my concern is about how these versions work with Jaws.
Apparently, Freedom Scientific agrees and they are trying to deal with
 the

conflict between Jaws and AVG. Why would they do this? Well, for one
thing, of all anti-virus programs available here in the U. S. AVG is
 rated

one of the best. It is also the one purchased more frequently by
 computer

Some
 say

that with the new version of Jaws, AVG works fine. Others say that it
still is giving them problems. Before I do something I'm going to
 regret,

I need to know which is correct.

 1. I have loaded the newest version of Jaws.
 2. I have uninstalled AVG 7.5 but I have retained the .EXE file and my
 code key.
 3. If I load AVG 8 now, will it function correctly or will it crash as
 some have indicated?

Chris has his opinion about AVG but I'm a bit concerned that he is
trumpeting his personal dislike for the software and ignoring the
 essential problem we are having.
The fact is that at the best of times, AVAST is a pain in the neck.
Some of the functions have never been accessible. It might be a fine
program but it has never worked as well as the older versions of AVG
 where

compatibility with Jaws is concerned. That isn't opinion ladies

 longer
 announces
blank as you move from one folder to another.
. E-mail messages no longer close when you select and copy message text
using the APPLICATION Key's Copy command.
 list end

 Microsoft PowerPoint
 list of 1 items
. JAWS correctly reads text that is typed into PowerPoint edit fields
 (for
example, the File name field in the Open dialog box) when you use the
 Say
 Line
command (INSERT+UP ARROW). Previously, JAWS would announce blank.
 list end

 Microsoft Word
 list of 2 items
. JAWS now announces the Word Count dialog box statistics when you
 press
 ALT+T, W in Word 2007 or Word 2003 documents.
. JAWS now recognizes and announces when text wraps to the next line in

That's a shame indeed, David. Does anyone know what exactly Grisoft did to
cause this problem? I'm not surprised that the program still doesn't work
after the new version of JFW...only because I don't think Grisoft is
 working
cooperatively with FS to fix this.
New and improved...oh brother. There are some great programs out there
 that
are totally and completely useless to us because they are new and
improved. Take for example Registry Mechanic. It is a great little
 program;
I'd give it a 9 out of 10 only because I have to use the JAWS cursor to
navigate through everything. Other than that, it is a great program; I'd
like to see JAWS support for Registry Mechanic but I'd like to see it for
AVG first. But when we're talking about accessabillity of programs, I
 really
shouldn't complain: FS does a heck of a great job. Look at the number of
programs that work well with JAWS...quite a few of them. So, my point
is...I'd like to see support for AVG 8 and to a lesser extent Registry
Mechanic, but we musn't blame FS for that problem...they do a steller job.

The deal as it would seem is that FS is trying to fix something that AVG
broke. It's a shame that new and improved often means to leave us out in

I believe that the manufacturers offer a free version of their products
because they just might encourage someone to buy a better product if
 they
get reasonable success from the free software. For those who can't
 afford

the cost, having some kind of free anti-virus protection is worlds
 better
 than having none at all.

It is also the one purchased more frequently by
 computer

That
 should
be our primary concern here. I am reading conflicting messages. Some
 say

that with the new version of Jaws, AVG works fine. Others say that

[JAWS-Users] Microsoft Outlook 2003 and JAWS

2008-05-25 Thread amtk161
Hi everyone,

I am wondering if there are any recommended settings other than those
presented in the Outlook 2003 helpful hints to make JAWS work better with
it? I've just recently installed Outlook and noticed a few things:

1. When in the message list, the display names and subjects from emails
cut off after what I believe is the first line of text. If I am receiving an
email from [EMAIL PROTECTED], JAWS reads it as something like [EMAIL
PROTECTED]
The same thing happens with the subject. This doesn't happen in Outlook
Express, so I'm guessing there is a way to correct this?
2. 2. When replying to messages, the reply window takes forever to load
up. Why is this? Does it have anything to do with the setting to use
Microsoft Word as the message editor?
3. 3. JAWS does not announce auto-completion of email addresses as I
type; I thought there was an option for this but I can't find it.

I'm sure that the answers are really simple; I'm just not sure of what they
are. Is there a list of settings like the helpful hint on the JAWS-Users
page? (Oh, and David, people do look at those!)

Thanks,

Michael

however and for reasons I cannot figure out, the insert-pagedown
 combination
reads the start menu. when I press the key combination now I hear:
start JAWS inbox file-name filename filename 9:37 p.m.

How can I fix this to get Jaws to work properly as before? I am using JAWS

That isn't opinion ladies and
gentlemen, it's simple fact. I am not criticizing AVAST in any way. It
just doesn't work that well with Jaws. That goes for older versions as
well as the most current one.

As I said in the beginning, everyone has their preference. I want to
 find

an anti-virus program with excellent ratings which will work well with
Jaws. That's all people. I'm not interested in creating a fire fight
between those who like AVAST and those who prefer AVG. I just want to
 know. Don't you?

I should say JAWS 9.0.2169. It also works well with JAWS 7.10. It's hot key
based, and I love it, but with some versions of JAWS it likes to skip around a
little bit if you read long email messages. The two versions I mentioned above
don't seem to do this though. I'm running Forte Agent 4.2. I think the site to
get it is www.forte.com and you do have to pay for it. I think it's $29 if you
are a new customer. However they do give you a free 30 day trial. Free Agent
is no longer available, but it didn't have much functionality anyway.

As mentioned on these reviews, what about all the registry traces and
non-active or non-executable files left behind by both products after clean
up?
How best to clean up the clean up?

PC Magazine recently reviewed both programs.

Here is their review of Avast 4.8:
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,2282699,00.asp

and their review of AVG 8.0:
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,2291382,00.asp

I personally do not use either, since I just bought a Dell laptop, which
came with 3 years of Trend Micro PC - Cillin. I will have to upgrade the
AVG 7.5 on my kids computer to one of those soon though.

2008-05-25 Thread RJ
Now this is the question to be or not to be? Who should be on top of making
sure their clients are satisfied, the paid ventor, or the ventor giving
their products away free? Mind u, the reason the free stuff is to entice one
to buy the product of the ventor letting one have a down grade free. With a
little effort on the part of the person wanting to use the free products,
they usually can find all kinds of documentation to help them use the
product successfully. And with the help of others on a list like this, who
can go wrong?

These programs are like the flavors at Baskin Robins, a well known
ice-cream vendor in the U. S. Or, if you prefer, different strokes for
different folks. Chris, you have a real issue with AVG at any time. I
must point out that the best way to get protection from any of these
packages is to purchase the paid for versions. To quote Will Rogers,
There ain't no such thing as a free lunch!
I believe that the manufacturers offer a free version of their products
because they just might encourage someone to buy a better product if
 they
get reasonable success from the free software. For those who can't
 afford

the cost, having some kind of free anti-virus protection is worlds
 better
 than having none at all.

It is also the one purchased more frequently by
 computer

That
 should
be our primary concern here. I am reading conflicting messages. Some
 say

that with the new version of Jaws, AVG works fine.

That's a shame indeed, David. Does anyone know what exactly Grisoft did
 to
cause this problem? I'm not surprised that the program still doesn't work
after the new version of JFW...only because I don't think Grisoft is
 working
cooperatively with FS to fix this.
New and improved...oh brother. There are some great programs out there
 that
are totally and completely useless to us because they are new and
improved. Take for example Registry Mechanic. It is a great little
 program;
Mechanic, but we musn't blame FS for that problem...they do a steller
 job.

How I have to agree with your below comments. I would also suggest that one
download the AVG version 8 Free manual to get a feel for the program. Using

Re: [JAWS-Users] FREE AVG ANTIVIRUS

2008-05-25 Thread Lisa
Hi Brian,
Does the free version of AVAST include this rootkit program that you are
talking about?
Take care,

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] FREE AVG ANTIVIRUS

Take care

Brian Lee

In my oppinion you can't expect any free version to be as good as the paid
version. Avast isn't rated that well even though the free version might
have
more features than free AVG. That's just something to consider. I'm not
trying
to start an arguement about which is better though.

Hi, this is why I went for Avast; it had more protection features, even the
free home edition had more protection features than AVG Free. The only
thing
it won't protect you from with Avast Home is script blocking, but that's
better than what you would be missing with AVG Free. Just my £0.02 worth.

While playing: It'll be in the Play submenu, the list view therein.
Alt-v,
 e, then l, then
tab around. If you want to access files on your computer in Windows media
Player, then hit alt for file, then arrow up or down. Going up, the first
(oldest) file or link stored in your library is just one above the Exit
 button.

A library area to store or create my music playlists.
When I read the Media player tutorial, it mentioned about the library
area,
but have no idea where to find.
 Thank you.
