[JAWS-Users] Requesting help with dragging and dropping

2009-01-13 Thread Elaine
Hiya

I'm using jaws 9 on an XP pc with office 2000, I wondered if anyone could give
me a few pointers with dragging and dropping files?

I know the keystrokes, insert num pad slash or star, will lock the mouse but
when I drag the mouse pointer the item doesn't move.

can anyone help me out?

Thanks

Elaine

Re: [JAWS-Users] a good cd and dvd creater that works with jaws

2009-01-13 Thread Sherrie
Hi,
Thanks for this information. This is one of the programs I was considering
when doing searches on the Internet previously. But I had no idea if it
would work with Jaws or not. Now I have two programs to try so I am bound
to get those home movies onto a DVD.
Thanks again.

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] a good cd and dvd creater that works with jaws

Hello Holger,

DVD Flick is a good free DVD authoring program. The newest version will do
the necessary encoding, create the DVD folders on your hard drive, and has
burning capabilities. It will create DVDs from .AVI, .MPG, .WMV, .RM, .MOV,
.MP4, .M4V, .FLV, and others.

I have used DVD Flick to author DVDS and then burned them with Image Burn,
however, it appears that the newest version of DVD Flick has burning
capabilities as well.

One thing I need to do when I open DVD Flick is to use the JAWS screen
refresh command in order for the toolbar on the third line from the top of
the screen to be read by JAWS,. The JAWS cursor needs to be used to access
the toolbar items. However, adding files, selecting output location and
such steps can be done by using the tab key to move to the controls.

By default burning is not turned on, so a person needs to find the "project
settings" choice on the toolbar and do a left click on it. The tabs in the
project settings dialog are shown down the side, so again a person needs to
do a left mouse button click simulation on the "burning" choice. you can
then put on PC cursor and use tab key to move to a check box for burning the
DVD and checking it. You can then tab to the accept button to save
settings.

You do not have to create a new project. all you need to do is open the
files to be included, click on "project settings" and accept them, and then
click on the "create DVD" choice on the toolbar. When in the project
settings dialog, you should also click on the video tab and make sure NTSC
is the active radio button if you are in North America, or PAL if you are in
Europe. A lot of newer DVD players are able to play both PAL and NTSC, but
you will want to find out which one you should be using. The frames per
second rate is different for the PAL standard than it is for the NTSC
standard. Again, I found that the toolbar can be showing and then not be
recognized by JAWS, but a screen refresh usually makes JAWS start
recognizing the icons again.

If you need any more info then let me know, as once you have done it a time
or two it becomes quite straightforward.

DVD Flick will create a DVD folder with the Audio_TS and video_TS folders on
the hard drive, so if you don't want to use DVD Flick for burning then you
can use a program like Image Burn (which is also a free program).

Take care.

2009-01-13 Thread Sherrie
There is a very helpful mailing list for anything concerning the Stream. I
can't tell you how much I learned from it over the past year. They are very
kind to new users and there are archives to search as well.

It is very worthwhile to get the most out of your Stream.

[JAWS-Users] Re Victor Reader Stream

2009-01-13 Thread David Griffith
Dear Donnie

I would recommend you download the audio tutorial files from Humanware and
transfer them to your stream. You can then try out the features whilst you
are listening. The audio tutorials can be downloaded from

http://www.humanware.com/en-canada/support/vr_stream_documentation
The main mistake I have known people make is to not place mp3 files in a
folder before transferring them to the Stream. In the $VROtherbooks folder
mp3 files will only play if they are in a folder identifying a book.

If you just want to listen to a single mp3 file probably the best thing is
to transfer into the $VRPodcasts folder which will play single mp3 files
without problems.

The beauty of the stream is that you can simply use it with Jaws and Windows
Explorer. Although there is Stream companion software you do not have to use
this for basic tasks.

Regards

David Griffith

With the Stream off, put it into the Stream. It should seat well. When you
turn on the Stream, it will create the folders you need.

2009-01-13 Thread Elaine

hiya

both text and or graphics. Sometimes it is dragging text from top to bottom
of a document, others it is dragging graphics from one document to another.
I've even had to drag icons on the desktop.

I'm doing a college course and I have to use drag and drop as well as cut
copy paste, Sorry should have mentioned that in my previous emails.

I know it was a feature added a while back with jaws, only I never quite
figured it out.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Requesting help with dragging and dropping

2009-01-13 Thread Elaine

hiya

it's a requirement of my college course.

but as a last resort if I've not figured out the dragging and dropping then
yes I'll do that.

I just cant see why FS would have added a feature in to jaws if you couldn't
use it.

just thought there might be someone on this list who knew how to use this
feature and could advice me on best ways.

thanks

Elaine

Hiya

I'm using jaws 9 on an XP pc with office 2000, I wondered if anyone could
give me a few pointers with dragging and dropping files?

I know the keystrokes, insert num pad slash or star, will lock the mouse
but when I drag the mouse pointer the item doesn't move.

can anyone help me out?

Thanks

Re: [JAWS-Users] Requesting help with dragging and dropping

2009-01-13 Thread Victor

Hello Dave,

I don't know if you have ever been sighted or not, but one of the greatest
things about being sighted and dealing with windows was the fact that one
could drag and drop icons and start menu items into any other start menu
sub-menu one wanted.

For example, one has various games for the blind installed on their
computer, yet Windows feels the need to place a games menu in the start
menu.

Naturally, I would like to place all of my games, blind and sighted alike,
into the same menu to cut down on clutter.

I can guarantee you you can't do this by copying and pasting, you literally
have to drag and drop the icons into the menu, otherwise you're just
twisting your thumbs in the air.

Don't knock something you don't use as being unnecessary, as others may
require that same function for something you never thought of using it for.

You shouldn't have to format anything. When you place it into the VRS,
the folders will automatically be placed on the card.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Requesting help with dragging and dropping

2009-01-13 Thread G.W. Cox

This is from a message I saved:
Use the key strokes, (CTRL+INSERT+NUM PAD SLASH) for Drag and Drop .
This is used to drag items from one location and drop them in another.
Position the JAWS Cursor on the item you wish to move and press
CTRL+INSERT+NUM
PAD SLASH. You can leave the JAWS Cursor active, or you can switch to the PC
Cursor. JAWS will keep speaking as you navigate. Once you have positioned
the JAWS or PC Cursor in the location to which you would like to move the
item, press CTRL+INSERT+NUM PAD SLASH again, and the item will be moved to
the position of the active cursor.

hiya

both text and or graphics.

Thanks

What sort of object are you trying to drag and drop? Why don't you simply
cut and paste?

I'm using jaws 9 on an XP pc with office 2000, I wondered if anyone could
give me a few pointers with dragging and dropping files?

I know the keystrokes, insert num pad slash or star, will lock the mouse
but when I drag the mouse pointer the item doesn't move.

can anyone help me out?

Hi Victor,
Actually, you can move items to the start menu, and it's sub menus without
dragging and dropping.

Been doing it for years.

I can guarantee you you can't do this by copying and pasting, you
literally have to drag and drop the icons into the menu, otherwise you're
just twisting your thumbs in the air.

Don't knock something you don't use as being unnecessary, as others may
require that same function for something you never thought of using it
for.

Since I just posted a long ranting request for help, I figured I better
balance that with a nice long solution-oriented write-up.

I saw this question on various screen access lists. People want to know
which terminal emulator works best with JAWS, or how to access some
Unix-Linux-BSD with JFW or simply how to use a terminal program in Windows
with screen access.

I feel particularly sorry for the blind student who is trying to take
some sort of Unix course, and not only has to figure out this new OS but
needs to figure out how to access it while simultaneously using the
college's
Windows computers. Usually the access technology specialists don't have a
clue, or the information on the net is incomplete, outdated and/or
inaccurate.

I run several Linux machines, and am fortunate enough to have access to many
old computers which need terminals to talk to them. I have researched this
a lot, and have tried many telnet clients, hyperterminal, secure CRT, Kermit
for Windows and Putty. By far, my favorite application for accessing remote
computers with JAWS is TeraTerm.

First, grab yourself a copy of the latest UTF-8 TeraTerm Pro 4.60. Many
older versions are floating around, but I guarantee that 4.60 works great
with JAWS. I've used versions 5-10 of JFW with 4.x versions of TeraTerm.

The TeraTerm site is:

 http://ttssh2.sourceforge.jp/

other urls you might encounter contain dated versions.

Install the program and say No to all the extra little tray applets. They
don't do any harm but who wants resource hogs that aren't needed. If you get
one by mistake, standard techniques, like using msconfig can make it go
bye-bye. If you do accept all the defaults, the install will add these
unwanted extras. They keep unnecessary windows open but will not adversely
affect your computer's accessibility.
Next, if you have JAWS, a version later than 5,and you want TeraTerm to
automatically speak while text scrolls (like a console window) create this
script:

Include "HJConst.jsh"

Void Function SayNonHighlightedText (handle hwnd, string buffer)

var

string TheClass

let TheClass=GetWindowClass(hWnd)

If GetScreenEcho () > ECHO_NONE && TheClass == "VTWin32" Then

   Say (buffer, OT_NONHIGHLIGHTED_SCREEN_TEXT);

endif

EndFunction

this script should be specific to TeraTerm, it should be called
"ttermpro.jss" and you should *NOT* put this code in the default script.

If this is all Greek to you don't worry. You can skip this scripting step
and TeraTerm will still work fine with JFW. Without the script, you will
need to use your JAWS cursor or virtualize the window, or a Braille display
to read incoming data. At work I use Braille and the JAWS cursor; at home, I
use the script. Both techniques work, and I switch between them each day.

You will find several, far more elaborate TeraTerm scripts out there. You
don't need them. Many were for older versions of Tera Term, and older
versions of JAWS.

One old script disables my semicolon key, and another of these outdated
scripts makes my Braille display constantly jump around.

A script very similar to mine above was originally on the blog of Saqib
Shaikh, which seems to be no longer on the net. I'd like to give him credit
for the idea, and I only plagiarize because
I can't find his blog to link you to it.

Anyway, this code is simply what gets executed in a Win32 console window
(what used to be called a DOS box) when the user chooses to have
highlighted text spoken but actually wants to have new text read as it comes
onscreen. It's stolen from part of the JAWS default script. But in the
default script, the code executes only for console windows, not for the
TeraTerm window.

The situation for a terminal user is similar to a DOS box user; they don't
actually want highlighted text, they want all new text, but not to hear old
text
read more than once. In other words, when the text scrolls, causing new text
to be written and old text to be rewritten as part of the scroll operation,
the JAWS user wants to only hear anything new, and not a repeat of the old
text.

For DOS screen access, this was easy. These programs simply read video
memory when users were not working with scrolling applications. When they
were, the DOS screen reader filtered calls to the PC BIOS. The BIOS handled
the scrolling and the screen access program never saw the old text again. so
the user never heard old text repeated. In DOS, the screen reader watched
the text that was sent to the BIOS screen services, so it knew about
everything sent to the screen through the BIOS. Video memory only had to be
consulted if a program wrote directly to the screen. Because DOS terminal
programs usually had the BIOS handle their scrolling, they for the most part
worked great with screen access.

Anyway, with Windows, lots of behind-

[JAWS-Users] Dragging and dropping

2009-01-13 Thread David Griffith
I agree that dragging and dropping is a much needed feature, some programs
will only allow you to access features if you can drag and drop files into
their interface.

Unfortunately it appears that dragging and dropping seems to be very poorly
implemented, in Jaws 8 at least. When I received some training back in 2006
from sight and Sound in the UK they told me that they were unable to support
training in dragging and dropping. They said that this was because the
feature only actually worked in a tiny number of circumstances. The
circumstances it will work applied exclusively to Windows Explorer and could
not be usefully used with other programs. So it was considered not actually
a useful feature to provide training in.

The situation may have improved with later versions of Jaws but I have not
checked this out.

NVDA, the freeware screenreader provides the ability to hear what is under
the mouse cursor and there is some audible feedback when you move the mouse
about the screen. You may be able to cobble together some techniques using
these NVDA features but I have not tried this.

2009-01-13 Thread Donald Marang
This has worked for me in the past in the rare situations where it was
absolutely necessary. One such instance was a DVD data burning software
package that came with my Sony computer. Make sure that the "Show window
contents while dragging" option is enabled in order to hear feedback when
dragging. In Vista, this is found in the Performance Control Panel and
selecting the Adjust visual effects link. In XP, I think this is in the
Display Control Panel.

Once you have positioned
the JAWS or PC Cursor in the location to which you would like to move the
item, press CTRL+INSERT+NUM PAD SLASH again, and the item will be moved to
the position of the active cursor.

both text and or graphics.

Hi Dale!

I have this freezing on my PC, but not my laptop. And in rare cases I
have a blue screen after the freezing. And it is allways the sound card
driver, that causes the bluescreen. My laptop has a ADI soundmax chip
and the PC a creative Soundblaster X-FI. I am not absolutely sure, but
it seams that, at least for me, it is the sound blaster that causes Jaws
to freeze.

Hello Holger,

DVD Flick is a good free DVD authoring program. The newest version will
do

the necessary encoding, create the DVD folders on your hard drive, and has
burning capabilities. It will create DVDs from .AVI, .MPG, .WMV, .RM,
.MOV,

.MP4, .M4V, .FLV, and others.

The JAWS cursor needs to be used to
access

the toolbar items. However, adding files, selecting output location and
such steps can be done by using the tab key to move to the controls.

By default burning is not turned on, so a person needs to find the
"project
settings" choice on the toolbar and do a left click on it. The tabs in
the
project settings dialog are shown down the side, so again a person needs
to

do a left mouse button click simulation on the "burning" choice. you can
then put on PC cursor and use tab key to move to a check box for burning
the

DVD and checking it. You can then tab to the accept button to save
settings.

You do not have to create a new project. all you need to do is open the
files to be included, click on "project settings" and accept them, and
then

click on the "create DVD" choice on the toolbar. When in the project
settings dialog, you should also click on the video tab and make sure NTSC
is the active radio button if you are in North America, or PAL if you are
in
Europe. A lot of newer DVD players are able to play both PAL and NTSC,
but

you will want to find out which one you should be using. The frames per
second rate is different for the PAL standard than it is for the NTSC
standard. Again, I found that the toolbar can be showing and then not be
recognized by JAWS, but a screen refresh usually makes JAWS start
recognizing the icons again.

If you need any more info then let me know, as once you have done it a
time

or two it becomes quite straightforward.

DVD Flick will create a DVD folder with the Audio_TS and video_TS folders
on

the hard drive, so if you don't want to use DVD Flick for burning then you
can use a program like Image Burn (which is also a free program).

Take care.

Hello Holger,

You do not have to create a new project. all you need to do is open the

Re: [JAWS-Users] Requesting help with text files

2009-01-13 Thread jo luland
Does anyone know why I can't read a text file? I'm using JAWS 10 with
Service Pack 3 and every time I open a text file, JAWS reads nothing. I've
tried converting some to a Word document, but this doesn't always work. This
situation began when I was using JAWS 9 and continues now in JAWS 10. I'm
pretty sure it's something that can be easily remedied through the
Configuration Manager. I just don't know where to look and what to look for.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

you don't have to drag and drop them either.
you can move anything on the start menu to the program list and within any
folder on that list. By going into the custom... options of the start
menu. You can find that tab menu in with the task bar tab menu.

At 11:50 AM 1/13/2009, you wrote:

I can guarantee you you can't do this by copying and pasting, you
literally have to drag and drop the icons into the menu, otherwise you're
just twisting your thumbs in the air.

Don't knock something you don't use as being unnecessary, as others may
require that same function for something you never thought of using it
for.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Unzipping a zipped book from the bookshare re-vamp website

2009-01-13 Thread Annette Carr
I have not downloaded a book since they updated their web site. But prior
to this, and it is probably still the case, you have to down load their
"unpack" tool. Once you get the download tool installed, you just select
the book file from either "My Documents" or where ever you have it saved.
This will automatically open the unpack tool and you just follow the
prompts/dialog boxes.

Annette

My ThinkPad X300 has what is reported to be a Soundmax. I don't know what is

Hi Dale!

I have this freezing on my PC, but not my laptop. And in rare cases I
have a blue screen after the freezing. And it is allways the sound card
driver, that causes the bluescreen. My laptop has a ADI soundmax chip
and the PC a creative Soundblaster X-FI. I am not absolutely sure, but
it seams that, at least for me, it is the sound blaster that causes Jaws
to freeze.

I still have not installed Jaws 10.

So far I have not identified a cause, I suspect sometimes it comes
from arrowing about too quickly although why it happens I am not
sure.

Hi all
Just wondering has anyone found this problem, I could be doing
anything, today I've just been navigating the internet trying to
search in combo boxes, using messenger, and also just generally
navigating web pages, and I find, that sometimes, for absolutely no
reason I can figure out, jaws will just stop talking and can take
some time to start talking again, in order for this to happen I
normally press insert t but sometimes I will just wait, anyone else
finding this problem?
And if so, what did you do to fix it?
I'm running vista home premium.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Requesting help with dragging and dropping

2009-01-13 Thread Rick Justice

Hi Victor,
It's a simple copy or cut, and paste operation.
Using Windows Explorer, go to:
c:\Documents and Settings
and then choose the user that you want to change the start menu for, by
locating the start menu in the list view

Depending on your installation configuration, there will
be at least 2, if not 3 user folders as follows:
All Users
Default User
Owner, or your name
If you don't see the start menu, then you will have to set your folders view
to show hidden files.

On my systems, the only start menu with anything on it besides programs
is the one for, Owner.
Note:
When you press the Windows key, or press control+ escape for the start menu,
you are simply activating a shortcut for the start menu folder, based on the
current user.
It is a good idea to place program shortcuts on the start menu, and not the
executables.
Additionally, you can create folders on the start menu, to better organize
everything.

I could go on, but this should get you going. smile

[JAWS-Users] JetBee cd and dvd burner

2009-01-13 Thread Andrew Head
Hi all,
I recently downloaded a program known as JetBee which is a free cd and dvd
burner. I worked out how to burn a cd, but I must have burned a data cd instead
of an audio cd. The file was too long for a regular audio cd.
If anyone has used this program, how do you choose between a data or audio cd?
or does anyone know of tutorials on this program?
kind regards,
from Andrew

My ThinkPad X300 has what is reported to be a Soundmax. I don't know what is
causing my Jaws to die, something to do with me jumping back and forth with
the arrow keys seems to have something to do with it.

Hi Dale!

I have this freezing on my PC, but not my laptop. And in rare cases I
have a blue screen after the freezing. And it is allways the sound card
driver, that causes the bluescreen. My laptop has a ADI soundmax chip
and the PC a creative Soundblaster X-FI. I am not absolutely sure, but
it seams that, at least for me, it is the sound blaster that causes Jaws
to freeze.

Regards!
Kamil

I have Windows Vista and Jaws 9 on a new X300 with four gigs of ram
and Jaws freezes for me too. IT does sometimes come back but
frequently the only solution seems to press the power button and
re-boot.

Thanks in advance,
Kerie Doyle

You may want to try Ed Sharp here

It's a text editor with Jaws scripts.

Does anyone know why I can't read a text file? I'm using JAWS 10 with
Service Pack 3 and every time I open a text file, JAWS reads nothing. I've
tried converting some to a Word document, but this doesn't always work.
This situation began when I was using JAWS 9 and continues now in JAWS 10.
I'm pretty sure it's something that can be easily remedied through the
Configuration Manager. I just don't know where to look and what to look
for. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

you don't have to drag and drop them either.
you can move anything on the start menu to the program list and within
any folder on that list. By going into the custom... options of the start
menu. You can find that tab menu in with the task bar tab menu.

Hello Dave,

I don't know if you have ever been sighted or not, but one of the
greatest things about being sighted and dealing with windows was the fact
that one could drag and drop icons and start menu items into any other
start menu sub-menu one wanted.

For example, one has various games for the blind installed on their
computer, yet Windows feels the need to place a games menu in the start
menu.

Naturally, I would like to place all of my games, blind and sighted
alike, into the same menu to cut down on clutter.

I can guarantee you you can't do this by copying and pasting, you
literally have to drag and drop the icons into the menu, otherwise you're
just twisting your thumbs in the air.

Don't knock something you don't use as being unnecessary, as others may
require that same function for something you never thought of using it
for.
