Does anyone know why I can't read a text file? I'm using JAWS 10 with
Service Pack 3 and every time I open a text file, JAWS reads nothing. I've
tried converting some to a Word document, but this doesn't always work.
This situation began when I was using JAWS 9 and continues now in JAWS 10.
I'm pretty sure it's something that can be easily remedied through the
Configuration Manager. I just don't know where to look and what to look
for. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

you don't have to drag and drop them either.
you can move anything on the start menu to the program list and within
any folder on that list. By going into the custom... options of the start
menu. You can find that tab menu in with the task bar tab menu.

For example, one has various games for the blind installed on their

Naturally, I would like to place all of my games, blind and sighted

I can guarantee you you can't do this by copying and pasting, you

I have not downloaded a book since they updated their web site. But prior
to this, and it is probably still the case, you have to down load their
"unpack" tool. Once you get the download tool installed, you just select
the book file from either "My Documents" or where ever you have it saved.
This will automatically open the unpack tool and you just follow the
prompts/dialog boxes.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Unzipping a zipped book from the bookshare re-vampwebsite

2009-01-14 Thread Greg

Hello,
This is what I did. I am using JAWS 10 and vista.
1. Go to your downloaded book and select it.
2. Once you have it selected hit enter.
3. Once you hit enter you should see the actual book.
4. Find your extract all button. (In vista you will tab till you hear
organize button and then press the right arrow till you hear the extract all
button).
5. It will then tell you you need to put in your bookshare password to
extract the file/files.

6. Select the folder you want the extracted file/files put into.
7. Once this is done you should be good to go.
Hope this helps,
Greg W.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws freezing sometimes in vista?

2009-01-14 Thread Greg

Hello,
The problem I have on my Toshiba laptop is I will be doing something and
JAWS will just quit. I either have to wait for a few seconds for it to come
back, or will have to eventually have to minimize the program I am in to
get it back, or I will have to close and restart JAWS.

Hi Dale!

I have this freezing on my PC, but not my laptop. And in rare cases I
have a blue screen after the freezing. And it is allways the sound card
driver, that causes the bluescreen. My laptop has a ADI soundmax chip
and the PC a creative Soundblaster X-FI. I am not absolutely sure, but
it seams that, at least for me, it is the sound blaster that causes Jaws
to freeze.

Hi all
Just wondering has anyone found this problem, I could be doing
anything, today I've just been navigating the internet trying to
search in combo boxes, using messenger, and also just generally
navigating web pages, and I find, that sometimes, for absolutely no
reason I can figure out, jaws will just stop talking and can take
some time to start talking again, in order for this to happen I
normally press insert t but sometimes I will just wait, anyone else
finding this problem?
And if so, what did you do to fix it?
I'm running vista home premium.

[JAWS-Users] winzip 12

2009-01-14 Thread David Ferrin
Other than the annoying message to upgrade from version 11 to version 12 is
there any advantage to taking the plunge. Also is the interface as accessible
like previous versions have been. I don't mind too much laying out the money
because it's normally not that much but the thing I use the most is the self
extractor program which is not pestering me to upgrade. It's been a while since
I have used what is built in to XP but since I just upgraded to pro I have been
using it and of course there is no problem there at all. Another item I would
like to ask about and the answer I imagine is yes is simply if you use the
built in compression utility could you still use the WinZip stand alone self
extractor program? The reason is as I hope at least some of you noticed is that
in some cases I place a zip copy of something like a set of script files on the

I upgraded to 12 only because I had previously paid for their upgrade

I can't say I've noticed any obvious differences/improvements in 12; but,
then, I almost always only run WinZip from the context menu interface.

Re: [JAWS-Users] winzip 12

2009-01-14 Thread David Ferrin
That's how I normally run it as well from the context menu myself. The thing
is I also always use the legacy compression method to remain compatible with
everybody else any way. So I haven't really benefited much beyond WinZip 8.1
so far as that goes. For now I might just install the self extractor program
and stick with what is built in possibly. Either way this is on the back
burner for a little while.

I believe that tomorrow is another day, and I'll probably screw that one up

I upgraded to 12 only because I had previously paid for their upgrade
assurance plan, and 12 didn't cost me anything extra.

I can't say I've noticed any obvious differences/improvements in 12; but,
then, I almost always only run WinZip from the context menu interface.

[JAWS-Users] RE Ms Word 2003 printing pages

2009-01-14 Thread First CRC Tom Vos
There are actually two ways of doing this.
1. Some printers can do duplex printing, but that's an expense you don't
need to make for a small amount of printing.

2. In the MS Word Print menu there are two ways to do this.
a. Alt G will allow you to type in the specific pages you want to print.
I often do this for small documents.
First I enter 6,4,2 and print.
Turn the pages over manually and enter 1,3,5.
When I do it in this order, they come out in order.
2. The second way is to tab down to the, Printt combo box.
Or Alt P
There you have options such as all pages in range, odd
pages, even pages

Other than the annoying message to upgrade from version 11 to version 12
is there any advantage to taking the plunge. Also is the interface as
accessible like previous versions have been. I don't mind too much laying
out the money because it's normally not that much but the thing I use the
most is the self extractor program which is not pestering me to upgrade.
It's been a while since I have used what is built in to XP but since I
just upgraded to pro I have been using it and of course there is no
problem there at all. Another item I would like to ask about and the
answer I imagine is yes is simply if you use the built in compression
utility could you still use the WinZip stand alone self extractor program?
The reason is as I hope at least some of you noticed is that in some cases
I place a zip copy of something like a set of script files on the server
next to a self extracting version.

Hello Dave,

I don't know if you have ever been sighted or not, but one of the greatest
things about being sighted and dealing with windows was the fact that one
could drag and drop icons and start menu items into any other start menu
sub-menu one wanted.

For example, one has various games for the blind installed on their
computer, yet Windows feels the need to place a games menu in the start
menu.

Naturally, I would like to place all of my games, blind and sighted alike,
into the same menu to cut down on clutter.

I can guarantee you you can't do this by copying and pasting, you literally
have to drag and drop the icons into the menu, otherwise you're just
twisting your thumbs in the air.

Don't knock something you don't use as being unnecessary, as others may
require that same function for something you never thought of using it for.

Ah, thanks for that, I was using the cursors the other way round.
positioning the pc cursor on the item, selecting it, then routing jaws to
pc, but once i'd done that jaws stopped talking and I had no ideas where I
was dragging the items too.

I'll try that. *smiles*

This is from a message I saved:
Use the key strokes, (CTRL+INSERT+NUM PAD SLASH) for Drag and Drop .
This is used to drag items from one location and drop them in another.
Position the JAWS Cursor on the item you wish to move and press
CTRL+INSERT+NUM
PAD SLASH. You can leave the JAWS Cursor active, or you can switch to the PC
Cursor. JAWS will keep speaking as you navigate. Once you have positioned
the JAWS or PC Cursor in the location to which you would like to move the
item, press CTRL+INSERT+NUM PAD SLASH again, and the item will be moved to
the position of the active cursor.

hiya

both text and or graphics. Sometimes it is dragging text from top to bottom
of a document, others it is dragging graphics from one document to another.
I've even had to drag icons on the desktop.

I'm doing a college course and I have to use drag and drop as well as cut
copy paste, Sorry should have mentioned that in my previous emails.

I know it was a feature added a while back with jaws, only I never quite
figured it out.

Thanks

This has worked for me in the past in the rare situations where it was
absolutely necessary. One such instance was a DVD data burning software
package that came with my Sony computer. Make sure that the "Show window
contents while dragging" option is enabled in order to hear feedback when
dragging. In Vista, this is found in the Performance Control Panel and
selecting the Adjust visual effects link. In XP, I think this is in the
Display Control Panel.

2009-01-14 Thread Baracco, Andrew W
To be fair to Victor, he did say that this was a class assignment.
Obviously, the purpose of the exercise is not to see how many ways a
task can be completed, but to learn a specific way of doing it. It's
kind of like when we took math classes in school. The purpose wasn't
always to get the right answer, but to perform a certain operation.

Hi Victor;

I must have gotten the wrong idea of what the list was for. I thought
it was to share our experiences. At the time I gave my opinion I did
not know the question was for an academic exercise.

You are the only person I have ever heard of that thought there was a
situation where drag & drop was the only solution.

Hello Dave,

I don't know if you have ever been sighted or not, but one of the
greatest things about being sighted and dealing with windows was the
fact that one could drag and drop icons and start menu items into any
other start menu sub-menu one wanted.

For example, one has various games for the blind installed on their
computer, yet Windows feels the need to place a games menu in the start
menu.

Naturally, I would like to place all of my games, blind and sighted
alike, into the same menu to cut down on clutter.

I can guarantee you you can't do this by copying and pasting, you
literally have to drag and drop the icons into the menu, otherwise
you're just twisting your thumbs in the air.

Don't knock something you don't use as being unnecessary, as others may
require that same function for something you never thought of using it
for.

[JAWS-Users] Travel sites

Does anyone know of any good travel websites that are accessible to

Re: [JAWS-Users] battery question and jaws

2009-01-14 Thread Estelita

My laptop does though.
It tells me when the battery is 10 percent remaining and I need to plug in,
or change the battery.
But my old laptop, just blips when the battery is low, and shut off if I
missed it.

Hi folks. I forgot that I had my computer running on a battery instead of
plugging in, and of course the computer shut off. Will Jaws tell you
anywhere if batteries are low on computer? I have Jaws nine installed.
will it say ahead of time if you are going to run out of battery life?

Hello Holger,

DVD Flick is a good free DVD authoring program. The newest version will
do
the necessary encoding, create the DVD folders on your hard drive, and
has
burning capabilities. It will create DVDs from .AVI, .MPG, .WMV, .RM,
.MOV,

.MP4, .M4V, .FLV, and others.

I have used DVD Flick to author DVDS and then burned them with Image
Burn,

however, it appears that the newest version of DVD Flick has burning
capabilities as well.

One thing I need to do when I open DVD Flick is to use the JAWS screen
refresh command in order for the toolbar on the third line from the top
of
the screen to be read by JAWS,. The JAWS cursor needs to be used to
access

the toolbar items. However, adding files, selecting output location and
such steps can be done by using the tab key to move to the controls.

By default burning is not turned on, so a person needs to find the
"project
settings" choice on the toolbar and do a left click on it. The tabs in
the
project settings dialog are shown down the side, so again a person needs
to

do a left mouse button click simulation on the "burning" choice. you can
then put on PC cursor and use tab key to move to a check box for burning
the

DVD and checking it. You can then tab to the accept button to save
settings.

You do not have to create a new project. all you need to do is open the
files to be included, click on "project settings" and accept them, and
then

click on the "create DVD" choice on the toolbar. When in the project
settings dialog, you should also click on the video tab and make sure
NTSC
is the active radio button if you are in North America, or PAL if you are
in
Europe. A lot of newer DVD players are able to play both PAL and NTSC,
but

you will want to find out which one you should be using. The frames per
second rate is different for the PAL standard than it is for the NTSC
standard. Again, I found that the toolbar can be showing and then not be
recognized by JAWS, but a screen refresh usually makes JAWS start
recognizing the icons again.

If you need any more info then let me know, as once you have done it a
time

or two it becomes quite straightforward.

DVD Flick will create a DVD folder with the Audio_TS and video_TS folders
on
the hard drive, so if you don't want to use DVD Flick for burning then
you

can use a program like Image Burn (which is also a free program).

Take care.

Re: [JAWS-Users] battery question and jaws

2009-01-14 Thread Dale Leavens

Hi Karen,

Computers implement power schemes in different ways. It may be that you have
to set warnings and other alarms in the power manager application on your
computer.

You will find this in the control panel. There are a number of things you
can set there, things like what the computer does when you close the top,
turning off Bluetooth and network radios to preserve power, now long to wait
during inactivity to turn off the screen and yes, if warnings should be
display in the system tray.

You may even have to set it to show the battery gauge in the system tray
where you will be able to find it when you want to check battery status.

I believe, though I might be wrong, that the script to show the battery
status invoked with JAWS + Shift + B (B for battery) not V for Valerie) will
only work if the battery gauge is showing in the system tray.

I hope this is helpful.

Hi folks. I forgot that I had my computer running on a battery instead
of plugging in, and of course the computer shut off. Will Jaws tell you
anywhere if batteries are low on computer? I have Jaws nine installed.
will it say ahead of time if you are going to run out of battery life?

[JAWS-Users] Quicken 2003 and Jaws 10

2009-01-14 Thread Lennie Rinaldi

Hello everyone,

I have been using Quicken 2003 since it became available and I have
no problem with it in prior versions of Jaws.

Quicken is somewhat manageable in Jaws 10. However, I found that it
does not work quite as well with that version. I checked popular
application in Jaws 10 and Quicken is not listed, but it is listed in Jaws 9.

I also checked Quicken scripts for Jaws 10 and I noticed that there
are fewer scripts there than in Jaws 9.

Has anyone else having problems with Quicken in Jaws 10? I was
thinking of copying the scripts from Jaws 9 and insert them in Jaws
10, but I don't want to create more problems.

Any thoughts or suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks,

Lennie

The only problem with copy or cut and paste is, when you go to remove
or modify something moved. it won't find it and won't remove it. When
you do it through the custom.. button on the start menu tab menu. it
rewrites its location in the registry.

See the one thing about on board sound chips is
they use your ram to do there work.
So with the op, jaws, and a few background

Hi Dale!

I have this freezing on my PC, but not my laptop. And in rare cases I
have a blue screen after the freezing. And it is allways the sound card
driver, that causes the bluescreen. My laptop has a ADI soundmax chip
and the PC a creative Soundblaster X-FI. I am not absolutely sure, but
it seams that, at least for me, it is the sound blaster that causes Jaws
to freeze.

I still have not installed Jaws 10.

So far I have not identified a cause, I suspect sometimes it comes
from arrowing about too quickly although why it happens I am not
sure.

Hi all
Just wondering has anyone found this problem, I could be doing
anything, today I've just been navigating the internet trying to
search in combo boxes, using messenger, and also just generally
navigating web pages, and I find, that sometimes, for absolutely no
reason I can figure out, jaws will just stop talking and can take
some time to start talking again, in order for this to happen I
normally press insert t but sometimes I will just wait, anyone else
finding this problem?
And if so, what did you do to fix it?
I'm running vista home premium.
Thanks in advance,

Hi Karen,

Computers implement power schemes in different ways. It may be that you
have to set warnings and other alarms in the power manager application on
your computer.

You will find this in the control panel. There are a number of things you
can set there, things like what the computer does when you close the top,
turning off Bluetooth and network radios to preserve power, now long to
wait during inactivity to turn off the screen and yes, if warnings should
be display in the system tray.

You may even have to set it to show the battery gauge in the system tray
where you will be able to find it when you want to check battery status.

I believe, though I might be wrong, that the script to show the battery
status invoked with JAWS + Shift + B (B for battery) not V for Valerie)
will only work if the battery gauge is showing in the system tray.

I hope this is helpful.

Does anyone know why I can't read a text file? I'm using JAWS 10 with
Service Pack 3 and every time I open a text file, JAWS reads nothing.
I've tried converting some to a Word document, but this doesn't always
work. This situation began when I was using JAWS 9 and continues now in

You may want to try Ed Sharp here

It's a text editor with Jaws scripts.

Does anyone know why I can't read a text file? I'm using JAWS 10 with
Service Pack 3 and every time I open a text file, JAWS reads nothing.
I've tried converting some to a Word document, but this doesn't always
work. This situation began when I was using JAWS 9 and continues now in
JAWS 10. I'm pretty sure it's something that can be easily remedied
through the Configuration Manager. I just don't know where to look and
what to look for. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in
advance.

you don't have to drag and drop them either.
you can move anything on the start menu to the program list and within
any folder on that list. By going into the custom... options of the
start menu. You can find that tab menu in with the task bar tab menu.

Don't knock something you don't use as being unnecessary, as others may
require that same function for something you never thought of using it
for.

Hello everyone,

I have been using Quicken 2003 since it became available and I have
no problem with it in prior versions of Jaws.

Quicken is somewhat manageable in Jaws 10. However, I found that it
does not work quite as well with that version. I checked popular
application in Jaws 10 and Quicken is not listed, but it is listed in Jaws
9.

Thanks,

Lennie

Hello Holger,

DVD Flick is a good free DVD authoring program. The newest version
will do
the necessary encoding, create the DVD folders on your hard drive, and
has
burning capabilities.

However, adding files, selecting output location
and

such steps can be done by using the tab key to move to the controls.

By default burning is not turned on, so a person needs to find the
"project
settings" choice on the toolbar and do a left click on it. The tabs in
the
project settings dialog are shown down the side, so again a person
needs to
do a left mouse button click simulation on the "burning" choice. you
can
then put on PC cursor and use tab key to move to a check box for
burning the

DVD and checking it. You can then tab to the accept button to save
settings.

You do not have to create a new project. all you need to do is open
the
files to be included, click on "project settings" and accept them, and
then

click on the "create DVD" choice on the toolbar. When in the project
settings dialog, you should also click on the video tab and make sure
NTSC
is the active radio button if you are in North America, or PAL if you
are in
Europe. A lot of newer DVD players are able to play both PAL and NTSC,
but
you will want to find out which one you should be using. The frames
per

second rate is different for the PAL standard than it is for the NTSC
standard. Again, I found that the toolbar can be showing and then not
be

recognized by JAWS, but a screen refresh usually makes JAWS start
recognizing the icons again.

If you need any more info then let me know, as once you have done it a
time

or two it becomes quite straightforward.

DVD Flick will create a DVD folder with the Audio_TS and video_TS
folders on
the hard drive, so if you don't want to use DVD Flick for burning then
you

can use a program like Image Burn (which is also a free program).

Take care.

Once you have positioned
the JAWS or PC Cursor in the location to which you would like to move the
item, press CTRL+INSERT+NUM PAD SLASH again, and the item will be moved to
the position of the active cursor.

both text and or graphics.

Re: [JAWS-Users] I am annoyed can I do anything about this problem

2009-01-14 Thread KB
It is a program I try to listen to every night and isn't playing. I went to
my Braillenote and it wasn't that great there but got through it. For some
reason stops once I press control p starts then after couple of seconds
stops again.

I press control p sit back and it starts playing and then oops stops and
doesn't start again just keeps shutting itself off. Discouraging.

it's a matter of choice...
Isn't the control P same as the pause button in that media player? Maybe
you could be pressing it to play and pressing it again to pause it to
make it not play through?
you can have more than one player on your computer. I have both but have
made winamp my default player so it's the one that comes on playing
mp3's.
It's probably a setting within that player that has it acting like that,
maybe on a review mode or something..

I am in media player and jaws says media player default view and I
have downloaded mp3 which keeps shutting off the voice every time I
try to press control p for play goes for a second and stops...do you
know how to correct that?

Re: [JAWS-Users] some kind of problem

2009-01-14 Thread Estelita
If it says google, try to do something as you normally do, and you will see
if you are online or not.
If still you're not online, the ISP has problem, which means you have to
give them time to fix the problem perhaps about 12 hours.

If no luck after then, it's time to contact your server provider.

Re: [JAWS-Users] I am annoyed can I do anything about this problem

2009-01-14 Thread Tim
After reading through all of the postings to this thread, I am guessing you
are on dial-up Internet service. If so, it sounds to me like you are only
hearing bits and pieces of the program because dial-up simply does not do
well receiving streaming audio online. The bandwidth is probably way too
high. By pressing control P you are probably telling it to play just what it
has received so far.

I am in media player and jaws says media player default view and I have
downloaded mp3 which keeps shutting off the voice every time I try to
press
control p for play goes for a second and stops...do you know how to
correct

that?
