Re: [JAWS-Users] Scroll keystrokes
Mike, A few things you could try. Turn on all graphics in the verbosity options, insert+v and then g until you come to graphics; then toggle it to all with spacebar. Also ctrl-insert-minus to change the state of the JAWS cursor. I think the scroll down symbol marks the end point, unless you want to try holding down the left-mouse button on it. In the case of my Vinyl Deck sound card controls, I don't have to go so far in order to find these controls - they are in a list as i arrow down in the sound Effects tab. Nice if you can get it to work, though. - Original Message - From: Mike Barbara mb69ma...@charter.net To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Sunday, May 17, 2009 3:39 AM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Scroll keystrokes Hi Flor, I use a sound card by Creative Labs, the Sound Blaster Audigy. Re: [JAWS-Users] Scroll keystrokes
Hi Flor, My graphics were set to all and I tried toggling them to labeled and it doesn't seem to make a difference either way. Using your suggestion of the keystroke control, insert, Jaws keys or using routing the PC cursor to the Jaws cursor does give me access to the whole list. That is something I hadn't been able to do since I had the soundcard installed until now, and that is because through the help of list members like you that I have gained the confidence to actually go into these programs to experiment with settings keystrokes. Thanks again Flor, you are a wealth of knowledge to all of the members of the list. Take care. Instructions I followed: 1. Open the JFW Configuration manager: Press and hold down the insert key, and press the F2 function key. Usually, the Configuration Manager is the first option in the window that appears. Press the enter key on Configuration Manager, and it will open in a new window. 2. The Configuration Manager window has a menu bar, and we want to open the Set Options menu. Do this by pressing the alt key and the letter s. 3. If you press the up arrow key when the Set Options menu opens, you will find a menu item titled: Advanced Options... Locate the Advanced Options menu item and press the enter key to open it. 4. When the Advanced Options window opens, you will find a check box titled: Sleep Mode Enabled Press the space bar to check this box, and press the tab key. 5. You will now find a check box titled: Unload Synthasizer Press the space bar to check this box, and you are done. Now, just press the enter key to close the Advanced Options window, Press Control S to save these new settings, and close the Configuration Manager window by pressing the alt key and the F4 function key. Re: [JAWS-Users] Scroll keystrokes
Hello Mike, It sounds like you have resolved the problem using the excellent suggestions given by Flor. Here is something else you might keep in mind when trying to navigate these types of lists. You can quite often move down a choice at a time in the list by simply doing a left mouse button click simulation on the scroll bar. After routing JAWS and navigating to the scroll bar you can press slash key on the number pad or caps lock with 8 if using the laptop configuration. After doing a left mouse button click, read the current line to see if you hear the next choice in the list. If not, use up arrow with JAWS cursor still on to see if the next choice is shown just above the scroll bar. Sometimes you might use the left mouse button click simulation a couple times on the scrollbar before hearing the next choice. Quite often if you press the left mouse button a few times when focus is on the scroll bar then you will get a few new choices in the list and you can up or down arrow to the one you want to use. You can then move to the choice you want and do a left mouse button click to choose it. Of course, after making choices then put PC cursor back on. Again, I have found that quite often in lists that are not accessible using PC cursor that using the left mouse button click directly on the scrollbar will scroll the list down one choice at a time. Take care. Have a nice Sunday! Re: [JAWS-Users] the questionmark does not speak like normal
Hello Sarah, It is possible that the question mark key has been mapped to a different key function. However, before getting into key mapping there is another possibility you might check out. One of my keyboards at work for some reason keeps switching to other keyboard languages. There will be times when I put in a password and it is rejected, and the reason is that the keyboard has changed to using a different language. If there is more than one keyboard language installed then try using the left Alt key with the left shift key to see if you can switch between keyboard languages. If the left alt with left shift doesn't switch keyboard languages then check in the control panel under the keyboard settings to find out if there are other keyboard languages installed. In the settings there is a choice for using the Alt and shift key for switching that can be checked if there are keyboard languages to switch between. There are other possible reasons for the problem to be happening, but you might just check this out first. Take care. With the launch of Windows 7 Release Candidate (RC) Tuesday, anyone can get their hands on a copy of the final public preview and, according to Microsoft, use it until Aug. 1, 2010, when the RC expires. But, most users won't want to use it for the entire 13 months Microsoft has allotted. For the RC, bi-hourly shutdowns will begin March 1, 2010, said spokesman Brandon LeBlanc in just one of several warnings Tuesday that Microsoft gave RC users of an earlier deadline. http://windowsteamblog.com/blogs/windows7/archive/2009/05/05/the-windows-7-release-candidate-rc-is-here.aspx *As it did with *Windows Vista's previews*, Microsoft will start *_pushing users to upgrade_* to the real thing by automatically shutting down, then restarting, PCs equipped with Windows 7 RC three months before the build officially expires. http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasicarticleId=9017728 You will be alerted to install a released version of Windows and your PC will shut down automatically every 2 hours [starting March 1, 2010], said LeBlanc. On June 1, 2010, if you are still on the Windows 7 RC, your license for the Windows 7 RC will expire and the non-genuine experience is triggered. Earlier, Computerworld reported that users could run Windows 7 RC for 13 months, and compared that favorably to Vista RC's shorter free periods. Actually, with the Windows 7 RC shutdown looming three months before expiration, the new operating system's free run is similar to Vista RC's. http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasicarticleId=9132397 In 2007, Vista RC1 and RC2 started rebooting on June 1, nine-and-a-half and nine months, respectively, after they were released. I suggest making plans to move to a released version of Windows well before the automatic shutdowns start to occur to prevent data loss, LeBlanc urged. Microsoft posted Windows 7 RC to its site yesterday, and although there were reports of slow download speeds, the company's servers withstood the load, unlike in January, when they folded under the crush of users rushing to get the beta. http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasicarticleId=9132543 http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasicarticleId=9125586 Windows 7 RC will be available for downloading through at least the end of July, Microsoft has promised. Re: [JAWS-Users] *Another Good Reason NOT To Upgrade From Windows XP*
Thanks Alan. As you probably surmised from reading this posting, this is talking about the Beta version of Windows 7--not the final version to be released this fall. JAWS 11 will work with Windows 7. JAWS 11 is scheduled to be released some time in the fall. I am currently using Windows XP Home and see little compelling reason to upgrade my operating system. Inevitably, I will be using Windows 7 soon though because notebooks with this operating system will quickly replace those with Windows Vista installed on them. - Original Message - From: Alan Dicey adi...@bellsouth.net To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Sunday, May 17, 2009 3:51 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] *Another Good Reason NOT To Upgrade From Windows XP* Hello Friends, I am just passing this along, it is way above me, as I have not even considered upgrading to windows 7. Re: [JAWS-Users] the questionmark does not speak like normal
I have also noticed that the apostrophe now is spoken as a graphic string of characters, as opposed to it's proper name of apostrophe. I also believe that Donny also had this problem way back when. Not sure if he fixed the problem or not, but if he did, perhaps he'd like to share the fix with the rest of us. Or, if anyone else has a fix for this, I would appreciate the help, as I'm sure others would as well. I'm using the latest build of Jaws 10, with Windows XP home, and Internet explorer 8, and it has been doing this since explorer 7, and, most notably in send space files I've downloaded, where the file name has a particular apostrophe in the name. Now, as I think about it, it seems that I can arrow through the characters that have replaced the apostrophe, and delete them one at a time, then add in the apostrophe, and it then is spoken correctly. Could this have anything to do with it? Just thinking aloud here, thanks folks. Thanks all.
