2009-09-20 Thread Kimsan
Good evening:
I use vista home premium and here is a basic question, how do I access the
active desktop and how do I set it up after I log into windows the desktop
appears?
Hopefully, I will get an answer this time!

[JAWS-Users] Blocked link in Sirius player.

2009-09-20 Thread kenh1114
Hi all.

I have a Sirius subscription and, up to now, have been able to use the "listen
and type the numbers you hear" link with no problem. After upgrading to I.E.
8, nothing happens when I try to use this link meaning that I'm not able to
listen online.

Does anyone have any ideas what's blocking the link and how I can resolve the
issue?

Thanks in advane for your help.

2009-09-20 Thread angel238
Thank you for this post concerning Media Player Classic. I use it but I
didn't know some of the commands you mentioned. I also use it to play
DVD's. I tried playing DVD's using Jaws and Windows Media Player
but was unsuccessful. I have no idea why Windows Media Player won't play my
DVD's. While they can be played quite well using Media Player Classic.
Thank you again for your post.- Original Message -

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Media Player classic

Dear List

I think I want to mount a case for using Media Player Classic as a
default

media player with Jaws.
Over the years I had lots of problems with Winamp, the application seems
intrusive and relatively hungry on resources. I found it would often
crash

and I would find unwanted extras like Winamp Agent and Dashboard etc
installed.

Media Player Classic in contrast is light, small with a simple clean menu
interface and as solid as a rock. I have installed it on loads of
systems

and have never come across a problem yet.
I do not worry about winamp type libraries etc and simply play my music
and
other media from windows Explorer. I thought that I would have to
sacrifice

some of the features of WinAmp that Jaws support but thought I would tell
you of some basic tinkering which results in Media Player Classic meeting
all my needs.

1. Information on time elapsed, bit rate etc.
You cannot simply read all this information from the menu bar in Media
Player Classic though the properties tab under the file menu will give
you

a lot of information.
To get information like time elapsed etc you can make some changes which
means this is easily displayed in a window that Jaws can read .
Go to the view menu and select all the information you want displayed.
This
includes statistics information status options etc. I normally turn them
all

on . This information can now be read with the Jaws Cursor by simply
cursoring up and down through the Media Player Classic Window.
To make this process even better you can stop Jaws announcing Graphic as a
one time customisation. Press insert F2 and open configuration manager
whilst in Media Player Classic. Open the set options menu and go to
graphics
and symbols and tab down to make sure that the Graphics verbosity is set
to

none. Exit and save configuration Manager. You will now find information
about your tracks playing will be read clearly without Jaws saying
graphics.

Use insert R to cycle through different read restrictions and set
restriction to application if too much is being read from other open
applications on your screen.

2. all the controls in Media Player classic are now intuitive. Play pause
is

space bar, up and down volume is by the up and down cursor keys and fast
forward and rewind can be achieved at different speeds by using control
left and right arrows or alt and left and right arrows respectively . All
other commands are available through a simple menu system.

3. although I have found no inbuilt Playlist creation support in Media
Player Classic, I use a small partner application called Mp3Tag to
quickly

achieve this. This can be downloaded from the Jaws User Programs page. To
create a playlist of all the files in a folder open Mp3Tag. Press Control
D

for Directory . Navigate to the folder where your Mp3 files are. Press
Control P for Playlist , press enter a couple of time and a playlist file
has been created in the folder with the mp3 files . This playlist file
can
be open by media player classic. If Media Player Classic is not your
default

playlist player and you want it to be so follow these instructions.
Simply press the application key on the playlist file and select open
with.

Go down to choose program from the resulting sub menu. Select browse if
media player classic is not displayed in the list and find mplayer.exe in
the Media Player Classic folder. . Now check always open with this
application and media player classic will play the playlist from Windows
explorer. Pressing the page up and page down keys will move you between
tracks in the playlist.
4. It should also be noted that Media Player Classic can be used to play
Real Media and Quicktime files through ?Real and Quicktime alternative
application, both of which bundle Media Player Classic as their default
player for these formats.

5,. I have never yet found a sound or video format that I cannot open
with

Media Player classic. The word classic in the title makes it sound old
fashioned but it seems very up to date with codec's. It opens without
problems files that both Winamp and Windows Media Player has not coped
with

.

I realise this is unlikely to convert devotees of Winamp but may help
those,
like me, who got very frustrated with this increasingly bloated
application.

If you are looking for a free alternative to WinAmp this may help.

Regards

David Griffith

Hi folks,

Recently when I attempt to open a wmv or mp3 file I get the message that
windows needs to go on-line and find out what program created the file.
I have both Windows Media Player and WinAmp installed on my machine and I
can only assume it is a driver issue. My question is, is there a jaws
friendly driver download site?
I installed "Driver Detective" and I am not having much luck making it
work.

I am using Media player 10, WinAmp 5.32, Windows XP Pro and Jaws 9.latest.

Any ideas, suggestions or incantations would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Micheal; wow, that's expensive to say the least! I know that some of the
music clubs charge about 99 cents, and a little bit above that in some

it's apparently legal. You have an unlimited amount you can downlolad per

Yes, in short, System Access (and System Access to Go) is the

of

reminds me of AmazonMP3, which is fine.
Also, I don't know why the library won't read if it has been

Hi Larry,

Try the steps below.

First the WMV file is a Windows Media Video and needs to be
played in Windows Media Player or some other WMV compliant
player. You can associate the file in Windows by going to...

1. Go to My Computer -> Tools -> Folder Options
2. Shift-Tab to the General Tab, and move right to the File
Types Tab 3. Tab once, hit a "W" on your keyboard to jump
down in the list to find the WMV entry 4. Tab to get to the
Change button which will open a list of programs, find
Windows Media Player, Tab to check the box for Always use
this program and click Ok.

Done. Hope that helps! You can accomplish the same thing by
navigating to the actual file, hold your left-shift key
while right-clicking the file to select Open With and choose
Windows Media Player in the same manner as Step 4 above.

Thanks,
Hi-Tech Tarheel

If you do in fact have windows media player installed, then
you might need to check if that file extension doesn't maybe
have an extra space at the end or something which is
stopping windows from recognising it and knowing what to do
with it.

Alternatively, if you go to the file menu in that message,
you can then save the attachment somewhere, and apart from
then sort of attempting to check the actual extension using
the F2 key when then browsing to it in windows explorer, you
can also try something like the context menu, go down to
open with... and see what is available there. Stay well

Hi Jose,
That is really too much of a blanket statement.
While I can not speak to every website,
programs found at:
www.blind-computing.com
and
www.jaws-users.com
have been tested not only for compatibility with Jaws, but also

scanned for

viruses etc.
Keep in mind, that security software will sometimes render false

positives,

that is why it is recommended to never run a program from it's

destination,

but, instead, download and scan the file first.
You can use some reputable on-line scanners to double-check a

file for

viruses.
At any time if you are not comfortable with a particular site, or

download,

then cancel the download , and leave the site.

Hi All,
If this is a forbidden question, please let me know. I don't

something I shouldn't and am not trying to be "elligal" as some

put it with

copyright material.
Does anyone know of a program, preerably free, that works with

jaws that can

make ringtones from mp3s?
I used to use total recorder and make clips and then upload them

to a

ringtone maker site that would compress the file to make it

smaller, but the

ringtones still sounded really really good. However, in vista,

you cna't use

total recorder like you could in xp, and so you can't record

anything in

total recorder without picking up jaws speech.
I know some free sites where you can download ringtones, but they

don't

always have what I want. These same sites have ringtone makers

but they use

the flash player to drag the slider to the part of the song you

want and are

not accessible. I would buy ringtones, but the process to buy

ringtones

through verizon is completely inaccessible, at least in my

experience. It is

also impossible to buy ringback tones and/or set them up without

sited help.

Thanks,
Sarah A.

Hello Jo,

Doing a quick Google search I find it is another Internet TB software
solution. It claims that you can watch thousands of channels for a one
time fee of $46 anywhere in the world on your PC. I doubt that it would
be 100% accessible with JAWS. Most of these video applications are not
accessible. It seems that their main site is overseas at: (what country
is me)

www.digitaltvonpc.me

It sounds interesting, but be careful! The top two search results claim
that this is a scam! This type of capability sounds great! Perhaps too
great. I tried a free solution called World TV, which was recommended
by a magazine once. I was not overly impressed. My sister in Arizona
uses some type of ITV solution. She might still have JAWS around to try
it out. She has sight, butt her daughter is blind and she teaches
Braille. I will ask her about it.

Yes, in short, System Access (and System Access to Go) is the only

Hello,

Are there any settings in Outlook 2007, or Jaws 10 to display graphics with alt
tags in the body of html messages in Outlook 2007
without having to display in a web browser?

I can press alt-h then x then v to display the html email message in my browser

describing the images properly.

I want to display the body of the html message properly within Outlook 2007.
The html message is displayed correctly in Outlook

Are there any configuration changes I can make to Outlook 2007, or Jaws 10 to
accomplish this?

If not, do you think this is a Jaws problem or a Microsoft problem?

Thank you,

Hi Ken,

The sign-uup for iTunes was not difficult if memory serves me
correctly. I find that it is easy to buy stuff from the store, and
there is no monthly rate; you just pay for each song (or album)
individually.

Yes, in short, System Access (and System Access to Go) is the

only

thing that works with iTunes right now. I don't know what the

SA

"mouse over" command is, but still...it works. The format kind

of

reminds me of AmazonMP3, which is fine.
Also, I don't know why the library won't read if it has been

upgraded

previously--perhaps because the file contains "upgraded" data?

I am just getting started with iTunes. Even version 8.2.1 seems

hard

to get it to do what I want to do at this point. I noticed that

you

performing a mouseover. When JAWS is focused on a song in the

have you attempted

the "activate mouseover" keystroke? On a desktop keyboard, that
would be the Control + Insert + NumPad Enter. I am not sure how

both.

Did you finish the installation of ringtone maker? If not, then you
probably aren't infected.
If you did finish the installation I would suggest running, malwarebytes.
You can download it here: www.malwarebytes.com

It's a free program but there is a paid version available.
If you need more help, I would recommend taking this discussion off list.

[JAWS-Users] Drivers download site.

2009-09-20 Thread Larry Stansifer
Hi folks,

Recently when I attempt to open a wmv or mp3 file I get the
message that windows needs to go on-line and find out what
program created the file.
I have both Windows Media Player and WinAmp installed on my
machine and I can only assume it is a driver issue. My
question is, is there a jaws friendly driver download site?
I installed "Driver Detective" and I am not having much luck
making it work.
I am using Media player 10, WinAmp 5.32, Windows XP Pro and
Jaws 9.latest.

Any ideas, suggestions or incantations would be greatly
appreciated.

Did you finish the installation of ringtone maker? If not, then

you

probably aren't infected.
If you did finish the installation I would suggest running,

malwarebytes.

You can download it here: www.malwarebytes.com
It's a free program but there is a paid version available.
If you need more help, I would recommend taking this discussion

I'm late on this thread due to vacation, but did not see my reply posted
yesterday so am re-sending.

I am using JAWS 10 and the latest BitDefendor. I have to use the invisible
cursor and then route invisible to PC to activate the various actions in the
main interface. I did not have to do this with previous BD versions- as the
individual actions showed up as submenus in the system tray. I'm doing OK
with BD now that I've figured out what I need to do.

hello list,

considering etting it as my antivirus package, but before I do the whole
uninstalling of AVG, then install of bit defdender and all that just to find
out it may not work and have to do the whole uninstall and reinstall thing
again, I thought I'd first ask around for opinions, suggestions and
observations.

Hi All,
If this is a forbidden question, please let me know. I don't want to start
something I shouldn't and am not trying to be "elligal" as some put it
with

copyright material.
Does anyone know of a program, preerably free, that works with jaws that
can

make ringtones from mp3s?
I used to use total recorder and make clips and then upload them to a
ringtone maker site that would compress the file to make it smaller, but
the
ringtones still sounded really really good. However, in vista, you cna't
use

total recorder like you could in xp, and so you can't record anything in
total recorder without picking up jaws speech.
I know some free sites where you can download ringtones, but they don't
always have what I want. These same sites have ringtone makers but they
use
the flash player to drag the slider to the part of the song you want and
are

not accessible. I would buy ringtones, but the process to buy ringtones
through verizon is completely inaccessible, at least in my experience. It
is
also impossible to buy ringback tones and/or set them up without sited
help.

Thanks,

What do you mean you can't use Total Recorder in Vista? This is news to me
as I can successfully use the program with Vista and now 7. Yes, it can
pick

up the JAWS voice, but how about this. Open an mP3 file, for example, do a
bit of editing with it, i.e., selecting and copying a chunk, then pasting
it
into a new MP3 file, call it whatever, and use that as a ringtone. You
don't
even need a license to do this as the noise is only inserted into
recordings

made in Total Recorder. Just a thought.

2009-09-20 Thread Chris Hallsworth
What do you mean you can't use Total Recorder in Vista? This is news to me
as I can successfully use the program with Vista and now 7. Yes, it can pick
up the JAWS voice, but how about this. Open an mP3 file, for example, do a
bit of editing with it, i.e., selecting and copying a chunk, then pasting it
into a new MP3 file, call it whatever, and use that as a ringtone. You don't
even need a license to do this as the noise is only inserted into recordings
made in Total Recorder. Just a thought.

Does anyone know of a program, preerably free, that works with jaws that can

I used to use total recorder and make clips and then upload them to a

I know some free sites where you can download ringtones, but they don't

the flash player to drag the slider to the part of the song you want and are
not accessible. I would buy ringtones, but the process to buy ringtones
through verizon is completely inaccessible, at least in my experience. It is
also impossible to buy ringback tones and/or set them up without sited help.

have you attempted

Dear List

I think I want to mount a case for using Media Player Classic as a
default
media player with Jaws.
Over the years I had lots of problems with Winamp, the application
seems
intrusive and relatively hungry on resources. I found it would
often

crash
and I would find unwanted extras like Winamp Agent and Dashboard
etc

installed.

Media Player Classic in contrast is light, small with a simple
clean menu

interface and as solid as a rock. I have installed it on loads of
systems
and have never come across a problem yet.
I do not worry about winamp type libraries etc and simply play my
music

and
other media from windows Explorer. I thought that I would have to
sacrifice
some of the features of WinAmp that Jaws support but thought I
would tell
you of some basic tinkering which results in Media Player Classic
meeting

all my needs.

1. Information on time elapsed, bit rate etc.
You cannot simply read all this information from the menu bar in
Media
Player Classic though the properties tab under the file menu will
give

you
a lot of information.
To get information like time elapsed etc you can make some changes
which

means this is easily displayed in a window that Jaws can read .
Go to the view menu and select all the information you want
displayed.

This
includes statistics information status options etc. I normally turn
them

all
on . This information can now be read with the Jaws Cursor by
simply

cursoring up and down through the Media Player Classic Window.
To make this process even better you can stop Jaws announcing
Graphic as a
one time customisation. Press insert F2 and open configuration
manager

whilst in Media Player Classic. Open the set options menu and go to
graphics
and symbols and tab down to make sure that the Graphics verbosity
is set

to
none. Exit and save configuration Manager. You will now find
information

about your tracks playing will be read clearly without Jaws saying
graphics.
Use insert R to cycle through different read restrictions and set
restriction to application if too much is being read from other
open

applications on your screen.

2. all the controls in Media Player classic are now intuitive. Play

fast
forward and rewind can be achieved at different speeds by using
control
left and right arrows or alt and left and right arrows respectively
. All

other commands are available through a simple menu system.

3. although I have found no inbuilt Playlist creation support in
Media
Player Classic, I use a small partner application called Mp3Tag
to

quickly
achieve this. This can be downloaded from the Jaws User Programs
page. To
create a playlist of all the files in a folder open Mp3Tag. Press
Control

D
for Directory . Navigate to the folder where your Mp3 files are.
Press
Control P for Playlist , press enter a couple of time and a
playlist file
has been created in the folder with the mp3 files . This playlist
file

can
be open by media player classic. If Media Player Classic is not
your

default
playlist player and you want it to be so follow these
instructions.
Simply press the application key on the playlist file and select
open

Go down to choose program from the resulting sub menu. Select
browse if
media player classic is not displayed in the list and find
mplayer.exe in

the Media Player Classic folder. . Now check always open with this
application and media player classic will play the playlist from
Windows
explorer. Pressing the page up and page down keys will move you
between

tracks in the playlist.
4. It should also be noted that Media Player Classic can be used to
play
Real Media and Quicktime files through ?Real and Quicktime
alternative

default

player for these formats.

Okay folks, it is easy enough to get someone's e-mail address from their
message.
Now, having said that, there is no reason to bring other screen-readers to
the list for discussion.
If you want to offer an alternative to Jaws to another member, take it off
list, this is the Jaws-users list.
I just mentioned this very thing recently, and the management team will not
post any further reminders on this matter,

Also, I don't know why the library won't read if it has been

have you attempted

that

how

this

To make this process even better you can stop Jaws announcing Graphic as
a

one time customisation.

Press
Control

D
for Directory .

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS in a stick query

2009-09-20 Thread Estelita
Thanks Chris, I thought that if I have JAWS installed in thumb drive, I can
use it to any computer without installing JAWS there especially when I'm on
the road.

But I think is not as easy as what I thought.
Regards,

Estelita

I haven't tried it, but basically it allows you to carry around your own
copy of JAWS with your very own settings. However, there are some caveats:
1. A video intercept driver needs to be installed on the machine(s) to
which

JAWS thumb drive version will be used. This is a problem for system
administrators who wish to restrict access to such machines.
2. You must have a license installed on the system(s) in order to use JAWS
longer than 40 minutes. Without a license JAWS runs in 40 minute mode.
3. You cannot use JAWS Tandem trademark with JAWS thumb drive version. In
fact, JAWS Tandem trademark won't be visible in the menus.
Hope this helps.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] ringtone program?

Hi All,
If this is a forbidden question, please let me know.

It
is
also impossible to buy ringback tones and/or set them up without sited
help.

Thanks,
Sarah A.
