I just downloaded the 3.2 Companion. 1 question, now I have 2 of the

I have recorded a short tutorial for the Humanware Companion available

Patty,

You do not need to remove prior version of the companion, the new will
update over the old.

copy it to your disk as you do anything else, then put it in your stream
turn it on and it will update it automatically, you should hear it saying
it's updated.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Tera term and Jaws 10

2010-06-15 Thread Baracco, Andrew W
Hi Mario,

I use Teraterm daily at work, and I found this post from a while back
that may help you. If you are using an old version of Teraterm, you
might want to snatch up this newer version. I think it is just what you
need. HTH!
Andy

Since I just posted a long ranting request for help, I figured I better
balance that with a nice long solution-oriented write-up.

I saw this question on various screen access lists. People want to know
which terminal emulator works best with JAWS, or how to access some
Unix-Linux-BSD with JFW or simply how to use a terminal program in
Windows with screen access.

I feel particularly sorry for the blind student who is trying to take
some sort of Unix course, and not only has to figure out this new OS but
needs to figure out how to access it while simultaneously using the
college's Windows computers. Usually the access technology specialists
don't have a clue, or the information on the net is incomplete, outdated
and/or
inaccurate.

I run several Linux machines, and am fortunate enough to have access to
many old computers which need terminals to talk to them. I have
researched this a lot, and have tried many telnet clients,
hyperterminal, secure CRT, Kermit for Windows and Putty. By far, my
favorite application for accessing remote computers with JAWS is
TeraTerm.

First, grab yourself a copy of the latest UTF-8 TeraTerm Pro 4.60. Many
older versions are floating around, but I guarantee that 4.60 works
great with JAWS. I've used versions 5-10 of JFW with 4.x versions of
TeraTerm.

The TeraTerm site is:

 http://ttssh2.sourceforge.jp/ http://ttssh2.sourceforge.jp/

other urls you might encounter contain dated versions.

Install the program and say No to all the extra little tray applets.
They don't do any harm but who wants resource hogs that aren't needed.
If you get one by mistake, standard techniques, like using msconfig can
make it go bye-bye. If you do accept all the defaults, the install will
add these unwanted extras. They keep unnecessary windows open but will
not adversely
affect your computer's accessibility.
Next, if you have JAWS, a version later than 5,and you want TeraTerm to
automatically speak while text scrolls (like a console window) create
this
script:

Include HJConst.jsh

Void Function SayNonHighlightedText (handle hwnd, string buffer)

var

string TheClass

let TheClass=GetWindowClass(hWnd)

If GetScreenEcho ()  ECHO_NONE  TheClass == VTWin32 Then

Say (buffer, OT_NONHIGHLIGHTED_SCREEN_TEXT);

endif

EndFunction

this script should be specific to TeraTerm, it should be called
ttermpro.jss and you should *NOT* put this code in the default script.

If this is all Greek to you don't worry. You can skip this scripting
step and TeraTerm will still work fine with JFW. Without the script, you
will need to use your JAWS cursor or virtualize the window, or a Braille
display to read incoming data. At work I use Braille and the JAWS
cursor; at home, I use the script. Both techniques work, and I switch
between them each day.

You will find several, far more elaborate TeraTerm scripts out there.
You don't need them. Many were for older versions of Tera Term, and
older versions of JAWS.

One old script disables my semicolon key, and another of these outdated
scripts makes my Braille display constantly jump around.

A script very similar to mine above was originally on the blog of Saqib
Shaikh, which seems to be no longer on the net. I'd like to give him
credit for the idea, and I only plagiarize because I can't find his blog
to link you to it.

Anyway, this code is simply what gets executed in a Win32 console window
(what used to be called a DOS box) when the user chooses to have
highlighted text spoken but actually wants to have new text read as it
comes
onscreen. It's stolen from part of the JAWS default script. But in the
default script, the code executes only for console windows, not for the
TeraTerm window.

The situation for a terminal user is similar to a DOS box user; they
don't actually want highlighted text, they want all new text, but not to
hear old text read more than once. In other words, when the text
scrolls, causing new text to be written and old text to be rewritten as
part of the scroll operation, the JAWS user wants to only hear anything
new, and not a repeat of the old text.

For DOS screen access, this was easy. These programs simply read video
memory when users were not working with scrolling applications. When
they were, the DOS screen reader filtered calls to the PC BIOS. The BIOS
handled the scrolling and the screen access program never saw the old
text again. so the user never heard old text repeated. In DOS, the
screen reader watched the text that was sent to the BIOS screen
services, so it knew about everything sent to the screen through the
BIOS. Video memory only had to be consulted if a program wrote directly
to the screen. Because DOS terminal programs

I had found this post, but I'am unable to create the script because Jaws

All machines are 64 bit. The question is do you want a 32 bit or a 64
bit operating system? Personally I would stay with 32 bit, unless you
have mission critical applications that require intensive memory and

Re: [JAWS-Users] Laptops with 32 bit vrs 64 bit

2010-06-15 Thread Mobeen Iqbal

Hi Trisha.

This is an age old question, and many people are debating about 32 bit
verses 64 bit, as well as how much ram to have. let me first answer your
question about 32 Bit. further to what Chris said earlier, the only
reason you'd want to go with 64 Bit is because supposedly it can access
all the memory of your laptop, for example the entire 4 GB, but it will
also allow you to use up to 128 GB of memory. 32 Bit will also allow you
to do this using something called physical address extention technology,
PAE for short. this technology, available on all modern processors,
enables a computer to use up to 64 GB of memory and does away in part
with the previous 4 GB limitation of 32bit. My personal recommendation
is stay with 32 bit. more programs by far support 32 bit and while
programs are supporting 64 bit, the majority of programs online don't
support 64 bit necissarily so there may be a decrease in performance if
using a 32bit program on a 64 bit machine. they are not necissarily the
future, as many people aren't running 64 bit despite it being around for
3 years or so. it was like the war between betamax and VHS, betamax was
around and it offered some advantages, but wasn't worth everyone
switching to it. or, like the modern day war going on between HD DVD and
blueray. people don't want to pay more for something they're hardly ever
going to use or take advantage of, and i can't blaim them. also, does
your jaws licence support 64bit? as far as i can remember, 32bit
licences are meant to be cheaper, i could be wrong though. conclusion?
go with 32 bit.

as for your question about the ram, most modern laptops come with a
minimum of 2 GB, more commonly 3 or 4 GB. you do not need to upgrade
this amount of ram. windows7 only needs a minimum of 1 GB of ram to run,
leaving the rest free for your programs etc.

I hope this answers your question. for the more curious among you, i can
send an article to the list if anyone wants to read it about 32 bit
verses 64 bit.

All the best,

Mo.

[JAWS-Users] Activating Checkbox in Excel Form?

2010-06-15 Thread Paul.Adam
Does anyone know of a way to activate a checkbox in an excel form using the
keyboard only? Are these keyboard accessible? I could not find anything after
googleing for a while. I have the Freedom Scientific accessible excel form
example but it does not use checkboxes, only text input fields and dropdowns.

Thanks for any help!

[JAWS-Users] turn off jaws auto-reading

2010-06-15 Thread jon searles
Yello,
This is my first post with this group, and need help. I've looked
everywhere i could to find the answer to this problem, and have had no
luck. I'm looking to see if it is possible to make it so that jaws
will NOT read a web page when you open it. Like when you do a search
with google, and then it reads the number of headings, links,
graphics, and then proceds to read the entire web page without
stopping. normally you have to hit Control to stop it, but it is very
tedious. Is there a way that anyone knows about to stop it from
automatically reading a web page. I know what i want on a page, and
never have found anything useful from letting jaws read un-controlled.
I've looked all over the configeration manager, and didn't have any
luck, but might not know what I'm looking for. Thanks in advance for
any help, or pointers in the right direction...
Jon

Well I have no idea about what Jaws does, it's doin' it's thingie on this
old clunker which is a 32 bit, it is however a pro verses the standard, so
if that puts it at the top for these 64 machines, then guess it's up for the

Hi Trisha.

This is an age old question, and many people are debating about 32 bit
verses 64 bit, as well as how much ram to have. let me first answer your
question about 32 Bit. further to what Chris said earlier, the only reason
you'd want to go with 64 Bit is because supposedly it can access all the
memory of your laptop, for example the entire 4 GB, but it will also allow
you to use up to 128 GB of memory. 32 Bit will also allow you to do this
using something called physical address extention technology, PAE for
short. this technology, available on all modern processors, enables a
computer to use up to 64 GB of memory and does away in part with the
previous 4 GB limitation of 32bit. My personal recommendation is stay with
32 bit. more programs by far support 32 bit and while programs are
supporting 64 bit, the majority of programs online don't support 64 bit
necissarily so there may be a decrease in performance if using a 32bit
program on a 64 bit machine. they are not necissarily the future, as many
people aren't running 64 bit despite it being around for 3 years or so. it
was like the war between betamax and VHS, betamax was around and it
offered some advantages, but wasn't worth everyone switching to it. or,
like the modern day war going on between HD DVD and blueray. people don't
want to pay more for something they're hardly ever going to use or take
advantage of, and i can't blaim them. also, does your jaws licence support
64bit? as far as i can remember, 32bit licences are meant to be cheaper, i
could be wrong though. conclusion? go with 32 bit.

as for your question about the ram, most modern laptops come with a
minimum of 2 GB, more commonly 3 or 4 GB. you do not need to upgrade this
amount of ram. windows7 only needs a minimum of 1 GB of ram to run,
leaving the rest free for your programs etc.

I hope this answers your question. for the more curious among you, i can
send an article to the list if anyone wants to read it about 32 bit verses
64 bit.

All the best,

Mo.

Sorry. I agree it's all technical. Basically, 64 bit operating systems
can use all the RAM (Random Access Memory) your computer offers. So, for
example, if you have 4GB (4000GB or 4096MB), then a 64 bit operating
system can use all of that, rather than 3 to 3.5 on a 32 bit operating

All machines are 64 bit. The question is do you want a 32 bit or a 64
bit operating system? Personally I would stay with 32 bit, unless you
have mission critical applications that require intensive memory and
processing power. Most of us do not, so it's best to stay with 32 bit
for the time being. But also note that 64 bit operating systems is the
future, so you may just want to go 64 bit anyway so that your laptop
is futureproof. Hope this helps.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Laptops with 32 bit vrs 64 bit

2010-06-15 Thread Mobeen Iqbal

Hi David. Here's the article atached.

I did consider upgrading to 64 Bit, but its always advisable to check if
your applications all have 64 Bit support, this applies mainly to anti
virus applications and multimedia apps such as video editors etc, or if
you're running a server. in my case, i stuck with 32bit for
compatibility, and it does include support for PAE simplifying things
for me for the time being, maybe if i had 8 GB of ram i would consider
upgrading so xp or 7 would use the full amount of memory, this will
become clearer in the atached article.

All the best,

Mo.

Hi Trisha.

This is an age old question, and many people are debating about 32
bit verses 64 bit, as well as how much ram to have. let me first
answer your question about 32 Bit. further to what Chris said
earlier, the only reason you'd want to go with 64 Bit is because
supposedly it can access all the memory of your laptop, for example
the entire 4 GB, but it will also allow you to use up to 128 GB of
memory. 32 Bit will also allow you to do this using something called
physical address extention technology, PAE for short. this
technology, available on all modern processors, enables a computer to
use up to 64 GB of memory and does away in part with the previous 4
GB limitation of 32bit. My personal recommendation is stay with 32
bit. more programs by far support 32 bit and while programs are
supporting 64 bit, the majority of programs online don't support 64
bit necissarily so there may be a decrease in performance if using a
32bit program on a 64 bit machine. they are not necissarily the
future, as many people aren't running 64 bit despite it being around
for 3 years or so. it was like the war between betamax and VHS,
betamax was around and it offered some advantages, but wasn't worth
everyone switching to it. or, like the modern day war going on
between HD DVD and blueray. people don't want to pay more for
something they're hardly ever going to use or take advantage of, and
i can't blaim them. also, does your jaws licence support 64bit? as
far as i can remember, 32bit licences are meant to be cheaper, i
could be wrong though. conclusion? go with 32 bit.

as for your question about the ram, most modern laptops come with a
minimum of 2 GB, more commonly 3 or 4 GB. you do not need to upgrade
this amount of ram. windows7 only needs a minimum of 1 GB of ram to
run, leaving the rest free for your programs etc.

I hope this answers your question. for the more curious among you, i
can send an article to the list if anyone wants to read it about 32
bit verses 64 bit.

All the best,

Sorry. I agree it's all technical. Basically, 64 bit operating
systems can use all the RAM (Random Access Memory) your computer
offers. So, for example, if you have 4GB (4000GB or 4096MB), then a
64 bit operating system can use all of that, rather than 3 to 3.5

[JAWS-Users] re-turn off jaws auto reading

2010-06-15 Thread James Flusche
Press insert+V. Go to General options. Arrow down one time to document read
automatically. Press the space bar to turn it off. If you tab over one time you
will hear the following helpful message.
When this option is turned on, JAWS performs a Say All and automatically begins
reading the Web page that is open in your browser as usual.
This mode is convenient when surfing the Web with Internet Explorer or Firefox;
however, there are many times when a user would prefer that JAWS
just loads the page and reports the number of links and headings, but avoids
starting a say all. This could be very useful to disable if
you are working on pages with forms or using JAWS in conjunction with MAGic.

The default setting for this option is on.
I am using jaws 11, I hope this helps you.

It doesn't need to. So long as the applications you're going to use
works on a 64 bit operating system then you will be fine with 64 bit,
otherwise buy a machine with 32 bit Windows on it.

Hi Trisha.

This is an age old question, and many people are debating about 32
bit verses 64 bit, as well as how much ram to have. let me first
answer your question about 32 Bit. further to what Chris said
earlier, the only reason you'd want to go with 64 Bit is because
supposedly it can access all the memory of your laptop, for example
the entire 4 GB, but it will also allow you to use up to 128 GB of
memory. 32 Bit will also allow you to do this using something called
physical address extention technology, PAE for short. this
technology, available on all modern processors, enables a computer
to use up to 64 GB of memory and does away in part with the previous
4 GB limitation of 32bit.

Mo.

Each application's manufacturer will list versions on their website if
their application supports 64 bit. even if it doesn't, it will probably
work on your system as 32bit emulation will probably take care of the

also tried control + alt + delete and nothing happens. These problems only
started happening after I downloaded Skype which is running in the system tray.
I just have a strong feeling that it has nothing to do with Skype though. I
might be wrong that has happened a few times LOL. I use an Dell Inspiron 1545

Re: [JAWS-Users] Laptops with 32 bit vrs 64 bit

2010-06-15 Thread Steve

Patricia,

First, if you want a full-sized desktop 104-key keyboard, you will need to
get a laptop with a 17-inch display, there are also some with 16-inch
displays. The ones with smaller displays don't have room for a full-sized
keyboard with a separate number pad. If you want a smaller laptop, you
could always buy a USB keyboard to use as a full-sized keyboard, although
this would mean you have to carry around two devices.

As for memory, if you are getting Windows 7, you will want 2GB as a minimum.

It will be much easier to find 64-bit Windows than it will to find 32-bit
Windows. Just about every new laptop is 64-bit; although you may be able to
get the manufacturer to put a 32-bit system in. The 32-bit systems really
only give you a max memory of 3 GB usable, 4GB max. That is because of the
formula 2 to the 32nd power minus 1 is the maximum memory.

My recommendation would be to consider how you will use your laptop. If you
are in essence going to use it as a desktop replacement where you will be
doing some intensive tasks like audio editing, or have several applications
running at the same time, then go with a 64-bit system and get extra memory.
But, you need to check for example to make sure your scanner and printer has
drivers for a 64-bit operating system. This shouldn't be a problem for
newer printers and scanners, but the older ones that are more than five
years old may not work with a newer operating system, particularly ones that
are 64-bit.

A slight correction-

I have a 15.6 new laptop and it has a full keboard with the numb pad. It
uses the new HD screen which is a longer rectangle which provides room to
have a full keyboard. If you look for a High Definition machine it will
have the full keyboard. I did not look at the smaller, 12 screens, so they
may not have the full keyboard.

This shouldn't be a problem for
newer printers and scanners, but the older ones that are more than five
years old may not work with a newer operating system, particularly ones that

are 64-bit.

I'm getting an education for sure.

Which brings me to the next faze, memory.

How much, add more, go with what the laptop has?

My sister just purchased back around end of March, a Acer laptop with this

win/7 for roughly $359. but I don't know much anything else about it, save

it has a full size keyboard, a button to turn/off the mouse function. I is

much lighter in weight too and I think the monitor is bigger, but those
details don't interest me much on monitor size.
I'm focusing on how easy it is to use it, the key layout and all that. It
did come with several USB slots and the cd rom drive if that's what it's
 still called these days,lol.

But the keyboard was almost exact to desktop keyboards or what I am use
 to.

Sorry. I agree it's all technical. Basically, 64 bit operating systems
can use all the RAM (Random Access Memory) your computer offers. So, for
example, if you have 4GB (4000GB or 4096MB), then a 64 bit operating
system can use all of that, rather than 3 to 3.5 on a 32 bit operating
 system.

Press insert+V. Go to General options. Arrow down one time to document read
automatically. Press the space bar to turn it off. If you tab over one time
you will hear the following helpful message.
When this option is turned on, JAWS performs a Say All and automatically
begins reading the Web page that is open in your browser as usual.
This mode is convenient when surfing the Web with Internet Explorer or
Firefox; however, there are many times when a user would prefer that JAWS
just loads the page and reports the number of links and headings, but avoids
starting a say all. This could be very useful to disable if
you are working on pages with forms or using JAWS in conjunction with MAGic.

The default setting for this option is on.
I am using jaws 11, I hope this helps you.

zip. I am sure this is not the standard way of doing this and I do not
think 7 zip advertise this feature but it works quickly and fine for me.
To merge any number of mp3 files with 7 zip simply highlight the files in
question in windows Explorer . The files will need to have names that mean
they appear in the order you want to merge them. So if they are not in the
right order put 01 at the beginning of the first one and 02 at the second
one etc. Now press the application key to bring up the context menu . Go
to the 7 zip menu and then select add to archive from the sub menu.
Now tab to the compression level combo box in the 7 zip window that comes
up and change the level from normal to store, using the up and down cursor
 key. Now simply press enter.
7 zip will close after creating a zip file of your merged mp3 files.back
in windows Explorer highlight this file and press F2 to edit the file name.
Now simply rename the file type zip at the end to mp3. Press enter twice
ignoring the warning message that windows gives about changing file types
 and you are there.

As I say, not at all standard, but quick and easy for me as it all works
 from Windows Explorer, pretty much.

[JAWS-Users] Quick Books

2010-06-15 Thread Kerryann Ifill
Hi there,

I finally unearthed the quickbook tips that my friend put together for me
last year. I've pasted them below. Hope it helps.

Kerry

Quick Books Tips Key commands
When opening and using the customer list:
Control J opens the customer / job list. From here you can arrow up and down
through the list, or if you enter the first few letters of the name quickly
or even just the 1st letter, it will bring you closer to your search.
Alt I will open the highlighted customer or job for editing. Once the
customer file is open.
Alt I again, will bring you to additional Information. This includes info
such as job , PO #, shipping method or tracking #, etc.
Alt J brings up the job page. Including job status, start date, install
date, paid date, job description etc.
Alt P brings you to payment and account info.
Alt T opens a note section. Once opened, Alt D will date stamp the current
date. Any info added here, you must tab and click ok in order to save.
Note
All of these fields may vary with your QB setup. The templates and fields
are set up by the administrator.
Any field you are in, escape will close that window. If you have made any
changes, you will be asked to save or not. One thing to remember. Jaws will
say things at times that are not in the highlighted field. If you use the
say line command, it will read or say blank. I have learned over time.
Now back to the main QB home page.
Vendor List
Alt O will open the vendor list. Again, you may put in letters in rapid
succession to move more quickly to the name you are looking for or just
simply arrow through.
Alt I will open the vendor for editing.
Control N will open a new vendor when adding.
Information in the vendor list will also be the info QB will use when
printing checks.
Wile in this Vendor list it is also possible to create a Purchase order from
here. Using Alt O to open the list, then U. this will open the next PO in
order.
This template is also created by the administrator, or may have a default. I
have only been using QB for our company.
Other Names list
Alt L and then N. will open other names list. This is where you are able to
add personal names and information
Again, once the list is opened,
Control N for adding new.
Arrow or key to the desired contact. In this list, you have to enter on the
highlighted name, then arrow down to edit, enter on this in order to open
the contact for editing.
Creating Invoices, packing Lists, or Other parts orders.
Control I will open an invoice. If you had already highlighted a customer
before opening the invoice, QB would automatically add this customer info to
the appropriate fields. Billing and job site / ship to address. Wile in an
invoice, if any changes are made to the address fields supplied by QB. Upon
closing or printing the invoice, you will be asked if you want the changes
to appear next time. Choose carefully here. This could change your next
usage of this customer or Vendor. If you want to keep the changes for this
particular invoice or Pombo not change the past or future. Then you would
say no or Alt N.
Example:
We sold a part to a customer, but they would rather in this one instance
have the part shipped to the job site instead of their office. You would
open an invoice, tab through and fill out the appropriate fields. If the
address info is changed, when you print or save you will be asked if you
want these changes to appear net time. In this case no. The correct shipping
info will stay on this invoice, but not be changed the next time you use the
same customer.
When tabbing through each field, the template will allow a certain amount of
characters, prechosen by the administrator. Some fields such as shipping,
inventory, job assignment etc. Only list items preassigned by the
administrator will show up as choices. If you add something new, not already
in the list. You will be asked to do a quick add. Depending on an
individuals permission, you may or may not make these changes.
Once you tab to an address field, there will be multiple line for editing.
While in this field, you arrow up and down to on each line, then tab to move
out of the fields.
Many fields can be preassigned by the Administrator to help with efficiency.
Such as memo, billing / shipping charges etc. This allows for easy
conversion from one template to another using the same invoice number.
For sighted assistance.
Many of the key commands are shown with an underline below the hot key. For
instance the print command is Alt T, so the T will be underlined.
Be aware that many of the standard jaws key commands will be correct, but
some will change. For example, control P will bring up payment info instead
of print.
I'm not sure if this will be clear enough instruction, but hope it will
help. I have used multiple versions of QB with multiple versions of Jaws. I
am now using XP Pro with Jaws 8 Pro and QB version 2007 contractor edition.
As each program has upgraded to the next version, it has only become more
easily navigated.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] MSN Messenger

Hi all:

I have not used MSN Messenger for about 1.5 years.
But I'm now going to use it for instant messaging again.

Which MSN Messenger client works best with JAWS these days?

I used MSN Messenger 7.0, but I have been informed that Microsoft blocks
old

versions of the client.

I'm using JAWS 11.0.1447.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Humanware Companion Tutorial

2010-06-15 Thread Patti

Hey Patricia,
The new companion 3.2 is what you use to transfer from your victor to your
computer. On my victor Stream I have 3.1.7, and I don't know if there is a
update for my Victor, but on my desktop I have 2 victor companions 2.04, and
3.2, so should I take off the old Victor companion on my computer?
And how do I get the new voices I downloaded on to my Victor Stream? I
downloaded Daniel.

Patti

Patty,

You do not need to remove prior version of the companion, the new will
update over the old.

copy it to your disk as you do anything else, then put it in your stream
turn it on and it will update it automatically, you should hear it saying
it's updated.

Hey Denny,
I just downloaded the 3.2 Companion. 1 question, now I have 2 of the
Companions, can I delete the 2.04
off my desktop, and I downloaded another voice off the website. Where do
I put it? I got it saved in my victor folder right now. Do I put my card
in, and put it on the root?

Thanks for all the help
Patti

I have recorded a short tutorial for the Humanware Companion available
at:

http://www.humanware.com/en-usa/support/vr_stream_software.
The Humanware Companion can be used for transfering books and music to
the Victor Stream.
