[JAWS-Users] Question about windows live mail and how jaws reads it.

2010-07-18 Thread Erin
,Hi, I am using windows live mail on windows 7 pro and using jaws 11
standard in demo mode.

I have my emails going into several folders. When I tab into a folder jaws
will read the first email in the following way.

Name of person, date and time received, subject, size and finally that it
was sent to my email address and what folder it is in. I really don't want
it to read all of that info.

Also, jaws will not tell me how many emails are in each folder and after I
read or delete one jaws says not selected, so I have to select each email in
turn.

Does anyone know if there is a way ot change this?

I have done research online and cant find anything.

Any help is greatly apprectiated, thank you in advance.

Erin

2010-07-18 Thread John Justice
Oops, I forgot about that dongle. You're absolutely right Chris. You can
run jaws normal on a Windows 7 model with Home premium but it won't work at
all with Windows Professional or Ultimate. I remember reading that
somewhere so I suppose that Chris is on top of this one too. My apologies,
Val. I was concentrating on the machine not the software.

The answer depends on what the dongle will authorize. Is it for JAWS
standard or Professional? If it's standard you will need a notebook with a
"home" version of Windows. Other specifications I guess are a spare USB port
and the usual specifications .

Re: [JAWS-Users] note book and jaws

2010-07-18 Thread John Justice
Val,
I'm using an HP notebook without any difficulty at all.
The only thing that will take some getting used to is the missing number pad
on your right. Because that is missing, you'll have to get used to a whole
new set of hotkeys. but after a while, they become second nature.

Another thing I'd like to mention is that the virtual mouse which is part of
almost every notebook I have ever seen, is usually set with the sensitivity
very high. So, if you touch it accidentally, while you're trying to learn
the keyboard, your focus goes off into the fourth dimension somewhere.
The sensitivity can be reset or the mouse can be turned off completely
within the Control Panel.
I dislike double tapping that Caps lock key to get the system to recognize a
shifted word but other than that, I like mine very well.
One thing though, and I know I'll probably hear about this from someone, I
don't like the proprietary software that Dell loads onto their laptop and
notebook computers.
That, at times, can really give you some grief. All in all Dell makes good
equipment but I wish there was a way to get it barefoot.

Good luck and you can't go wrong with HP. that has been my experience.
There are some on this list like Andy who don't like HP much but they have
always backed me up better than any other computer manufacturer I have
worked with.
Andy is right though. they did make some serious losers a while ago. But
their new equipment is really excellent and the prices are quite reasonable.

Mandy,
You can receive that message if another e-mail client such as Outlook is
in
your system at the same time. Windows Live may ask to be shown as the
primary e-mail product. That kind of message will occasionally lock you
out of an entire folder. If that happens, the only way around it is to
delete the folder and then re-create it. You may lose content in the
process. For some reason, I'm not sure why, Windows Live Mail doesn't
play
happily with other e-mail systems, even Outlook.

I like Windows Live Mail apart from a couple of issues - if a message
has

no links I seem to have to tab to read it.
Also sometimes an email will be totally unreadable as I will get "an
unknown error has occurred ok" and and there's no reason for it that I
can
see - I've found if I press shift and delete it gets rid of the message
which delete alone does not!

Also is there a way of reading addresses or contacts as they call them
as

I don't know how to look at how names and addresses are spelt.

I found what might be a working solution to this issue with Jaws not
reading
certain messages in Windows Live.
I have tried this several times and it does seem to work.

1. In the view Option, go down to Layout and make sure the Reading
Pane

is
checked.
2. There are options for placing it either at the bottom or to the
right
of
the message. Choose the bottom option.
3. If you encounter a message that won't read, activate the Jaws
cursor.
There may be a lot of other information in the page that we don't
usually
hear. If you are experiencing that, press the Page Down and you can
read
the message. It's annoying but it does work.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Upgrading my Windows program

2010-07-18 Thread Steve

Francis,

A couple things to consider...

First, is there a driving need for you to upgrade? Windows XP with SP3 will
be supported by Microsoft into 2014. So, you could get another three years
out of your current computer.

Second, consider your computer. How current is it in terms of specs, etc?
Run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor available at Microsoft.com to be sure your
system will support Windows 7 and whether you need to update drivers for
printers, scanners, etc. I've worked on some clients computer systems where
we had to purchase new printers or scanners because their scanner didn't
have drivers for Windows 7. This is particularly the case for 64-bit
versions of Windows (the 32-bit versions are harder to find in
pre-configured systems).

Third, is their a particular reason you need Win 7 Pro? It does have XP
emulation, but that may/may not be supported in Jaws, and it is rarely
needed except for certain specific programs. I know some gamers for example
who use it. Unless you have specific needs, Home Premium would be adequate.
Note, with Win 7 Pro, you will need the Professional Authorization of Jaws.

As for price, Professional will be about $200, versus around $100-125 for HP
if you look around.

Hint: you can actually do a full installation from an upgrade disk, which
would save you some money.

Take my advice, I don't use it anyway.

Could be your screen resolution, if the resolution is very high and the
carat is overlapping the character on the screen Jaws will see it as a newly
written character when the carat flashes off and repeat it to you each time.

See if changing the cursor blink rate changes the rate of the repetition to
find out if this is the cause.

Hi Flor;

I tried NVDA and I was able to read character by character what Jaws wasn't
able to read character by character. Everything seems to be okay when
writing. I truly appreciate your input.

Mike,

besides JAWS, do you have any other self-voicing apps (Openbook, or some
other) that will read character by character, see if this behaviour is
duplicated then? One thought is that this might be a video card issue.
How about when you're writing, is everything ok then?

Hi,
This has been discussed on the Windows 7 list. Unfortunately, it is not
possible to use JAWS in a Windows XP mode environment. Virtual PC
creates a terminal session by default, and JAWS doesn't understand that
it's not actually a terminal session; rather a "virtual" terminal
session created by Virtual PC. As a result JAWS thinks you're trying to
run it in a terminal session, and therefore will not work and instead
display an error message and quits. For the record, other screen readers
work, but this is outside the scopes of this list.
Sorry about that.

HI

At least in the Outlook 2010 beta, to select which e-mail account to send a
message, do the following. When positioned in the send/to field, press
shift+tab 4 times until you reach the From button. Press enter. Route JAWS
cursor to PC cursor Move the JAWS cursor one word to the right and you will
be at the top of the list of e-mail accounts. Arrow down to the account you
want and press enter. To verify you've got the right account, do another
route JAWS cursor to PC cursor and do a say line.

The biggest problem I've had with the Office 2010 beta since JAWS 11.0.1430
came out with scripts for Office 2010 is that often in outlook and word
2010, when I do a Say All, it will only read one line and then stop.

I have put
entries in my own confignames.ini file to use the Office 2007 scripts for
office and word. Say All works much better with those scripts.

I think Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade packages range from about $100 to
$125. I have heard that Microsoft is again offering a family 3 pack for
$150. A good deal if your family has more than one computer. I guess
this could be used with two other friends as well. It comes with one set
of disks and three license product keys.

I do not know how much an upgrade to Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate
would be.

Hi, you will have to first of all upgrade your Windows, then your JAWS
license. If you are not on JAWS 10 at least then you will need to upgrade
to that. The current version is JAWS 11. Yes I know I said JAWS 10, but it
does work quite well on Windows 7 with few exceptions.

Could be your screen resolution, if the resolution is very high and the
carat is overlapping the character on the screen Jaws will see it as a newly
written character when the carat flashes off and repeat it to you each time.

See if changing the cursor blink rate changes the rate of the repetition to
find out if this is the cause.

perhaps your best bet may be to have someone with sight view the screen
when this is happening. Perhaps there's some screen magnification
setting at work. Settings in Control panel | Accessibility Options |

windows settings, in the Appearance tab of Control panel | Display.
NVDA = Non Visual Desktop Access - get that? It lived up to its name. .

key
repeat works. Here is a better explanation of what is happening. If
I copy

will

read
it just fine. If I press the Home key Jaws will keep repeating the
first
letter of the URL. If I press the right arrow, Jaws will keep

Re: [JAWS-Users] Is there an easier way to check yahoo mail using jaws?

2010-07-18 Thread Shari

Hi Randy,

I don't use FireFox with Yahoo mail, so this might not be helpful. I use IE
7 and Jaws 10. Here are the steps that work for me.

1. type mail.yahoo.com
2. When the page loads, type b until Jaws says check for new mail and hit
enter

3. type x which takes me to the first message in the mailbox.

Yahoo mail isn't as easy to use with Jaws as it used to be, and I have no
idea if these steps will work with Firefox, but I hope you can work this
out.

Hi Mo,
To join the Windows 7 list send a blank message to
blindwindows7-subscr...@yahoogroups.com.
Now, from what I understand, XP Mode comes with a set of tools and
drivers so that it runs better with Virtual PC and provides automatic
logging onto the guest operating system. The other thing it does is to
behave as if it's running in a terminal (remote desktop) session. It is
this behaviour that is confusing JAWS and thus you cannot currently run
JAWS in XP Mode, unless you use some other XP Mode implementation like
there is in VMWare.
Hope this helps.

XP being directly controled by windows 7 i.e you're still using windows

understand your terminology, virtual terminal verses terminal...

chris hallsworth wrote:

Hi,
This has been discussed on the Windows 7 list. Unfortunately, it is
not possible to use JAWS in a Windows XP mode environment. Virtual PC
creates a terminal session by default, and JAWS doesn't understand
that it's not actually a terminal session; rather a "virtual" terminal
session created by Virtual PC. As a result JAWS thinks you're trying
to run it in a terminal session, and therefore will not work and
instead display an error message and quits. For the record, other
screen readers work, but this is outside the scopes of this list.
Sorry about that.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws keeps repeating

2010-07-18 Thread Flor Lynch

Mike,

besides JAWS, do you have any other self-voicing apps (Openbook, or some
other) that will read character by character, see if this behaviour is
duplicated then? One thought is that this might be a video card issue.
How about when you're writing, is everything ok then?

Hello Sir;

Thank you for your response and confirming what I thought about how
key
repeat works. Here is a better explanation of what is happening. If
I copy

read
it just fine. If I press the Home key Jaws will keep repeating the
first
letter of the URL. If I press the right arrow, Jaws will keep

Ok well then will try it out with my other screen reader and see what
happens as have an old program Partition magic that isn't compatible with
win 7 or win vista that prefer to use when partitioning hard drives.

So many thanks for the answers and explanation on what's happening or going

Hi,
This has been discussed on the Windows 7 list.

Hi Mo,
To join the Windows 7 list send a blank message to
blindwindows7-subscr...@yahoogroups.com.

2010-07-18 Thread Don Risavy, Jr.
Ok well was trying to install Partition magic is why was wanting to use this
mode since it's not compatible with Win 7 or even Win vista; but, wasn't
able to install the program.

So do I need to go into windows xp mode first then run the program from the
setup.exe or install file of Partition magic to make it work?

I was able to view the win xp mode screen when first clicked on the icon
until changed the display option think it was and then had no speech.

So guess this mode isn't going to be compatible with any screen readers?

Will check out the help info too to see what can do.

Many thanks for your tips and or suggestions.

Thanks.

Hello Don,

Although JAWS might not work too well in XP mode of Windows 7, the Windows 7
Compatibility wizard might take care of older programs that won't
Normally work in Windows 7. If you type "run programs made for earlier
Versions of Windows" (without the quotes" in the start menu search box you
can start the compatibility wizard. Chances are good that if you just type
"run programs" that the first choice in the results will be for starting the
wizard. Press enter on the choice. Tab to the "next" button and press
enter. You might need to wait a few seconds for the list to populate. One
of the choices in the list will be for "not listed." If you use that choice
you will then be able to browse for the program.

I have used the compatibility wizard for a reading program that was bundled
with other software that worked in Windows 7. The bundled reading program
didn't work in Windows 7, but when choosing to use settings for XP SP3 with
the compatibility wizard the program worked well.

An alternative to using the compatibility wizard is to modify the properties
of the program's shortcut. Use Alt+enter key on the shortcut icon and then
use CTRL+tab to move to the compatibility page of the dialog box. You can
choose to run in 256 colors, 640 x 480 resolution, and you can pick an
earlier operating system with which the program was compatible. You can
also disable display scaling on high DPI. There is also a button to run the
same settings for all users and a checkbox for running the program as an
administrator. You will have to respond to a UAC prompt every time you run
the program.

If you have some vision and if older programs give fuzzy results then go
into the properties of the program, click compatibility tab, and then select
"disable display scaling on high DPI settings."

Take care.

No, there is a Windows XP mode, but you need Win 7 Professional or Ultimate.

It is not available on Home Premium and certainly not on Basic either.

Re: [JAWS-Users] sma status

2010-07-18 Thread Mike O'Brien
In order for the JAWS window to show the correct number of upgrades
available, the JAWS authorization on that computer must be up to date. If
you're not sure that it is, you can do Update Authorization from the JAWS
Help menu. This does not reduce the number of authorizations available.
FSActivate will show you the version of jaws you are running plus x
upgrades.

shift+tab 4 times until you reach the From button.

The link is missing an l at the end, so you need to use the extension .html.

Second, this is an excellent discussion of Windows Mail, the mail client

Hi Mike,

Just to clear up something. the key repeat feature has nothing to do

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws with Windows XP mode in Windows 7

2010-07-18 Thread Brian Lee
Hello Don,

Although JAWS might not work too well in XP mode of Windows 7, the Windows 7
compatibility wizard might take care of most older programs that won't
normally work in Windows 7.

Take care.

Mandy,
You can receive that message if another e-mail client such as Outlook is
in

your system at the same time.

I like Windows Live Mail apart from a couple of issues - if a message has
no links I seem to have to tab to read it.
Also sometimes an email will be totally unreadable as I will get "an
unknown error has occurred ok" and and there's no reason for it that I
can

see - I've found if I press shift and delete it gets rid of the message
which delete alone does not!

Also is there a way of reading addresses or contacts as they call them as
I don't know how to look at how names and addresses are spelt.

1. In the view Option, go down to Layout and make sure the Reading Pane

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Jaws with Windows xp mode in Windows 7

Hello,

Wondered if anyone has been able to successfully use Jaws 11 in
Windows XP
mode in Windows 7 to access or use earlier programs that aren't or
won't be
compatible with Windows 7?

If so are there any special settings needed in order to successfully use
Jaws in the Windows XP compatible mode in Windows 7?

Thanks.

tried to call fs about this and even they didn't know what caused
this. even went to the extreme of wiping out and reinstalling jaws
with the same effect and that was with fs tech support on the line.
this was yesterday morning.

that' the real trouble here. a book that is installed but according
to check for updates, it isn't. hope this explains the real issue.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws with Windows xp mode in Windows 7

2010-07-18 Thread chris hallsworth

Hi Mo,
To join the Windows 7 list send a blank message to
blindwindows7-subscr...@yahoogroups.com.

Hi,
This has been discussed on the Windows 7 list.
