they should all be installed by default - they aren't features that

2010-09-21 Thread Vicki
When I go into the JAWS menus under Language, there is a submenu called JAWS
Language which is unavailable. I believe this used to be where you could
access foreign languages so that JAWS would read correctly in whatever
language you selected. This is unavailable to me, so I'm asking, how do I
make the foreign language options show up so I can select a different
language. I hope that makes sense.

Re: [JAWS-Users] question about word doquments and .text files

2010-09-21 Thread Melissa
I'm not sure about putting the file on a Victer Stream, but I can help you
change the file extension. When your desired file is open, open the file
menu. Choose "save as". This will open a new save dialogue box. The focus
will automatically be in the file name edit box. Tab once, and you will be
in a combo box allowing you to change file types. Use the arrow keys until
you here "text Dot T X T". Press enter twice, and you will have created a
file identical to the one you have open, but with a .txt extention.
You can also do this by placing the focus on the name of your file within
your documents folder, and renaming the file which is an option found again
in your file menu. Just retype the name, replacing the .doc extension with
.txt.
Hope this was helpful.
Warmly,
Melissa

Open the document in Word.
Choose the, Save as Option.
Alt, F and then A
You will be in the edit field for your file name.
You don't need to change anything here.
Tab once and you will find a list of file types you can save as.
Arrow down the list until you find txt,
Enter, and then Enter again to save it.
Now you will have two files with the same name, but with a different
extension.
The txt file will be the file you can transfer.

Re: [JAWS-Users] repost JAWS and Languages

No. You need to have other (non-English) language
versions of JAWS
available for this option to work. Eloquence comes equipped with the
ability to speak other languages where they occur, if the html is tagged
appropriately. Choose synthesizer language submenu, or, in later JAWS
versions,
change voice profile.

now, you need to have,

start jaws after log in screen for all users checked,
start jaws after log in for this user, make sure that always is

you should hear,
start jaws after log in for this user, always, 1of3.

That ffirst box is checked but because I misunderstood your original
instructions (smile) I tried to uncheck with SpaceBar, enter key, and left
mouse click when jaws cursor is turned on. I could never uncheck any of the
three items. Inbox email is still being moved to trash. I should perhaps
rephrase my statement to say that it is not exactly automatically moved to
trash rather after I read it or have not read it yet and closed windows live
mail and reopened it again. I initially thought the inbox emails were gone
but that's when I discovered they escaped to the trash folder in windows
live mail. I am wondering if they are making the new windows live mail
function better or even more ridiculously cumbersome to use. Thanks.

program which almost always starts with the name of the program. Is there any
way for JFW to not announce that.

My motivation: Say I'm streaming music online or playing mp3 off my PC hard
drive and each time the screen saver kicks in JFW announces the name of the
screen saver which is an annoying interruption to my listening.
As I say above I am looking for a way to set JFW to not announce the name of
the program for all programs on my PC via the default.jcf file.

Thx much for any suggestion even if you tell me it is not possible at all in
which case I'll adjust my expectations of JFW.

Re: [JAWS-Users] question about word documents and .text files

2010-09-21 Thread Mike O'Brien
`Hi

.doc and .txt files are not identical. They are different ways to format
the document. Renaming the .doc file to .txt will not make it useable on
the Victor Reader Stream. You have to use the Save as option in word to
change the format.

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] question about word doquments and .text files

Warmly,
Melissa

Re: [JAWS-Users] question about word documents and .text files

2010-09-21 Thread Brian Lee
Hello Susie Q,

You do not have to save the .DOC file as a text file to transfer it to the
Victor Stream. If you have the latest firmware for the Stream installed,
the .DOC file types can be transferred and used. The .DOCX file type
introduced in Word 2007 requires the soft pack to be purchased before that
type can be used on the Stream. I put together a document for one of my
clients a while ago, and transferring a .DOC file was included in the
information. I have a link to that file further down in this message. The
document is set up with a table of contents, links, headings and bookmarks.
Use insert F7 to list links when using JAWS, and use up or down arrow key in
the list of links to find the one you want to move focus to and then press
enter key to move to that part of the document. If you prefer, you can use
CTRL+Shift+F5 to list bookmarks, use up and down arrow keys to the bookmark
to move to and press the enter key to move focus to the bookmark in the
document. If you are using a mouse then you can hold down the control key
and left click on a link in the table of contents to move to the area of the
document pointed to by the link. If you use a later version of JAWS that
includes the use of quick navigation keys then you can use them as well.
Use JAWS key Z to turn the quick keys mode on and then press H to move
heading to heading or B to move bookmark to bookmark. Use shift key with
the B or H to move to the previous bookmark or heading in the document. Use
JAWS key Z to move out of quick navigation mode. Transferring a Word
document is included in the file.

In addition to the link for the document dealing with transferring files
from the computer to the Victor Stream, I am also including a link to a file
for upgrading the firmware in the Victor Stream and a link to the latest
version of Humanware Companion. Write me off list if you need any help with
upgrading the Stream or Humanware Companion software.

The links shown below are in the following order:

1. The .DOC file with information about transferring files to the Stream.

2. The .DOCX copy of the same file, which is for Word 2007 or 2010. It can
also be read if you are using an earlier version of Word but have the file
converters installed.

3. A link to a file for upgrading the firmware in Victor Stream.

4. A link to the latest version of Humanware Companion.

Make sure that your Victor Stream is authorized to use the latest upgrade
before doing the upgrading procedure.

Re: [JAWS-Users] AUTOMATICALLY START JAWS

2010-09-21 Thread Jim Rawls

Joe,
When you leave the computer, is your computer going to sleep? if that's the
case, when you come back to the computer, jaws wouldn't speak unless you
woke your computer up. Go into power management, and set your computer the
way you want, so that it doesn't go to sleek. For me, I set that to never,
so my computer doesn't go to sleep or shut down, until I tell it too. Just a
thought. Jim

No. You need to have other (non-English) language
versions of JAWS
available for this option to work. Eloquence comes equipped with the
ability to speak other languages where they occur, if the html is tagged
appropriately. Choose synthesizer language submenu, or, in later JAWS
versions,
change voice profile.

[JAWS-Users] sounds for avast

2010-09-21 Thread john
Hi list. I have been using avast 5.0.594 since it came out and find it
very good. Over the last 2 weeks, the sounds that came with avast seem to have
disappeared. In the past when windows came on, avast would say "virus database
has been updated." but now when I go to the sounds tab in control panel, there
are no sounds listed for avast. All the windows sounds are fine, and when I
manually check the update tab in avast, it seems to have updated the virus
definitions automatically. Has anyone else noted this and where does one find
the sounds? I am using vista. Thanks

Re: [JAWS-Users] sounds for avast

Hi.

I'm just wondering if avast has somehow become muted? what i mean is
windows seems to offer individualised volume controls for different
applications, is it possible that the volume for avast could be set to
0? the avast sounds should either be in the media folder inside the
windows folder on the root of your hard drive, or in the alwal software
folder in program files. I would check for you straight away but i don't
have avast 5 on this machine. by the way, don't update to the latest
program version yet as they're working on accessibility, they broke the
rightclick menu in terms of accessibility in 5.0.667.

Depends on which version of JAWS you're using. In JAWS11, it's called
'select a voice profile... in the JAWS, basics, Options submenu. In
earlier versions, as i said it is under choose synthesizer language.

Thanks, Flora. I guess I'm confused. I'm not finding "change voice
profile"

anywhere. Can you be a little more specific as to where I would look?
Thanks.

No. You need to have other (non-English) language
versions of JAWS
available for this option to work. Eloquence comes equipped with the
ability to speak other languages where they occur, if the html is
tagged

appropriately. Choose synthesizer language submenu, or, in later JAWS
versions,
change voice profile.

When I go into the JAWS menus under Language, there is a submenu
called JAWS
Language which is unavailable. I believe this used to be where you
could
access foreign languages so that JAWS would read correctly in
whatever

language you selected. This is unavailable to me, so I'm asking, how
do I
make the foreign language options show up so I can select a different
language. I hope that makes sense.

Are you talking about the synthesizer languages for Eloquence? If so,
they should all be installed by default - they aren't features that
can only be selectively installed.

[JAWS-Users] Perky Duck and Notepad problem Fixed in JFW 12

Well I tried the beta of Jaws 12 today, and Notepad starts
in cell one instead of cell 2, so I'm hopeful that Perky Duck will also
behave that way.

I created those scripts before vista ever hit the street so they might not
install correctly. They do install right on XP, I wonder if I should pull
some of those items down at least until I can find an updated version of the
program I use. Sadly it's name has slipped my mind at the moment.

[JAWS-Users] Working in a call centre with JAWS

2010-09-21 Thread Grant Hardy
Hi all,

Has anyone used JAWS in a call centre type situation?

I've gotten a job at my university's call centre. Obviously, I'm unsure how
accessible the software will turn out to be with JAWS. We're using two
programs - they are called RuffalloCody and QuickAddress Pro.

Thanks,

Grant

I have used Jaws in a call center environment. I don't know if those
programs will work with Jaws. Here in Idaho, I would ask my Commission for
the Blind to send out one of their specialists to check it out and see.
That is the only solution I can offer. Wayne

I have used jaws in a call center environment. It's going to be 50 50 as to
whether the software is accessible. I've seen it where it was totally
accessible from the get go and where it was not. I don't know about the
software you mentioned. If the software turns out not to be accessible, you
might be able to have the university get a jaws scripter to make it
accessible. Hope this helps.
