Re: [JAWS-Users] some links won't open in new format
David, The information you found on the site after clicking on the Men's sports link is the same info I saw before and after clicking on the link, as well as the same info I saw before and after clicking on the Women's sports link. IE, it doesn't appear to be doing anything. Not to mention that the schedule for women's basketball would probably not show up under the men's sports link. Re: [JAWS-Users] Switching From XP To Windows7
I am always surprised at people's need to stick to the older technology. I am no means an early adopter. Especially on my work computer, I need to move slowly so that I don't impact my performance too drastically, but why would anyone stick with IE 6 I can't imagine. It is riddled with security holes and hasn't been patched in years. The fact that it works with JAWS 9 and Windows XP doesn't really encourage me. I mean, didn't JAWS 3.51 work well with IE 5 and Windows 95? Or some other combination there of? Just because a particular combination worked 8 years ago, doesn't make it the better choice. I didn't particularly like Windows 7 the first couple of months that I worked with it, but now it works just fine for me, I even like parts of it better than Windows XP. Eventually, you have to upgrade or lose out on many things. The longer you wait to upgrade, the harder it becomes because the more things change from what you know. Fewer, smaller incremental changes are usually easier than one huge monumental change. -- Blue skies. Dan Rossi Senior Oracle Database Administrator Carnegie Mellon University. Re: [JAWS-Users] Doubt regarding remote access with JAWS15:
To use JAWS with Citrix, you need to have JAWS installed on the Citrix server as well as the client machine. You also need your JAWS version to be licenced for remote access. Although I manage the Remedy back-end database, I have never bothered to try accessing the front-end, so don't have any useful advice there. Re: [JAWS-Users] movie reading
Mich, If you download the Movie Reading app, it will detail all. Once you have the app, you can go to the market place, select the movie you are interested in, then select whether you want the subtitles or described video. It will download that data. Then when you go to the theater, or, I guess, watch the movie at home, you start the app, it listens to the sound track, syncs the DVS or subtitles and starts describing or subtitling. I believe there is a charge for the DVS or subtitles. The app itself is free. If you go to the IOS app store, search on MovieReading, one word, capital M capital R. Technically, NLS isn't using anything proprietary. They are using a standard encryption scheme along with the DAISY standard. The encryption key is the piece that they obviously try so hard to protect. That is one reason why they have wanted to keep it to hardware based options. Re: [JAWS-Users] Mobile Facebook Site
Many web sites offer a mobile version of their site. You do not need to be on a cell phone to use a mobile site. Re: [JAWS-Users] Perenial problem with radio bottons
Miriam, They are called radio buttons. If you remember the old style radios that had big buttons on them. When you would push one button in, the one that was pushed in, would pop out. The idea is that only one button can be selected at a time. Your problem may come from trying to look at the screen and listen to JAWS. Just listen to JAWS. As you tab onto the radio button it will announce the button selection, if that is the one you want, you can hit the space bar. If you are using the arrow keys, sometimes you will hear button before or after the label for that button. Hitting space on the label won't do anything.Just tab and you should be fine. Putting the grave key in the dictionary manager only affects how JAWS speaks it when it sees it, it has no affect on the actual character being entered. Robin, Yes, I did get a response from Flor, that help my issue for reading numbers. There are two combo boxes in the settings for controling numbers. [JAWS-Users] Zoom in IE, and can I see everything.
Maybe I am missing something. Here is an interesting little issue I've recently stumbled across. I wonder if I've been missing a lot of stuff over the years. I was attempting to do some work via a web site. My coworkers told me to click on some link. No matter what, I could not find that link anywhere on the page. I had a sighted coworker take a look at my screen and they confirmed the link was not there. They showed me the section where it should be but I only saw about four links in that section, and they had maybe 8. I went to view, then zoom, and I moved it from 100% to 75% and suddenly more links appeared in that section. I moved it from 75% to 50% and suddenly, all the links, including the one I was trying to find, appeared. Now, should I always keep my zoom setting to the minimum? How do I even know when I am not seeing everything that should be there? As another little issue, seems like in HTML 5, objects that are clickable do not announce as being such. So, sometimes I am struggling to figure out how to find some piece of information, only to have a coworker to tell me to click on something that just appears as a piece of text to me. It doesn't say, link, doesn't say mouse-over, nothing, it is just text. Am I supposed to click on every word on a page now? -- Blue skies. Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS speaking numbers
Mike, Thanks but you obviously misread my message. I said that no matter what selection I make for number processing, on my Windows XP box running JAWS 13, and Eloquence, JAWS will only read numbers with five digits or more, in single number mode. If I set JAWS to single digits, it reads 12345 as 1 2 3 4 5. If I set it to controled by synth, it reads it as 1 2 3 4 5. If I set it to pairs, it reads it as 1 2 3 4 5. If I set it to Full Numbers, it reads it as 1 2 3 4 5. I want it to read it as twelve thousand three hundred forty five. OK, can someone explain this? This has been annoying me for a while now, but I guess I just got used to it. [JAWS-Users] CAPTCHA issues.
Regardless of the various algorithms for producing CAPTCHAs, I do not believe that WebVisum cares. It is just doing OCR on the graphic. It may be optimized to filter out background stuff, but it has nothing to do with the way that the CAPTCHA is produced. Thus, it would not be like Research It, where they would have to deal with a million changing parameters every time someone came out with a new CAPTCHA system. It is still just OCR. Eric, Thanks for the response. Can you tell me if I am missing something here. I am going to be one of those trouble maker users where I can't do anything the easy way. Do you know if the installation instructions for the Access Bridge on Oracle's site are accurate? [JAWS-Users] mixing bits.
I'm sure this has been covered here before, can I run 32 bit JAWS on a 64 bit box? I'm trying to debug an issue. I am interacting with a java app. On my 32 bit box with 32 bit JAWS, 32 bit java, 32 bit Internet Explorer, and 32 bit Access Bridge, the app works fine. The app apparently will not work with a 64 bit browser. So, on my 64 bit box, running the 32 bit browser with 32 bit java, the app comes up and a sighted coworker confirms it functions properly. But, JAWS doesn't see anything. I obviously have the 32 bit Access Bridge installed, to work with the 32 bit java, but I assume that the 32 bit Access Bridge is not playing nicely with the 64 bit JAWS. Re: [JAWS-Users] Amazon funkiness.
Several strategies for dealing with passwords are: Use the same password everywhere but add the name of the site to the end of the password. Use a password vault. That way you only have to remember one password, then you can grab the password out of the vault, and you don't have to remember each individual password, or username for that fact. And, you can make the passwords extremely complex since you don't have to remember them. You could do the whole spreadsheet thing. Also, one thing I did years ago, when I got frustrated because any username I came up with was never accepted on every web site, there are only so many combinations of Dan rossi DRossi DRossiBirthDay blah blah blah. I just recreated all my accounts with a nonsense word that no one else would ever use. Now I have the same username on every account. Which is helpful. Also, you can use grade two braille as a great way to come up with some very funky passwords. Lots of numbers and punctuation marks and no dictionary words. -- Blue skies. Re: [JAWS-Users] Amazon funkiness.
OK, since this is really no longer a JAWS issue, I'll just wrap it up with this note. I don't have any real problem shopping on amazon, I use it regularly and did virtually all of my Christmas shopping there. I was just wondering if I was missing something since I was not immediately offered edit boxes for login and pwd after clicking on "My account". I have to then click on Orders, or recent orders, or wish list before being prompted for login creds. I do find it interesting that clicking on "Your Amazon" then searching for sign, brings me to a "sign in" link which then clicking on that does bring up the edit boxes. So, quote your amazon quote and quote my account quote are different. Still seems like poor user design to have to go to the home page, then "your amazon" then "sign in" to get to the edit boxes. That's the only reason why I thought something was wrong. I don't remember it always being like that, and amazon is usually pretty conscious of user convenience. Anyway, looks like the behavior I am seeing is not out of the ordinary. So, no issue here. OK, the delete from wish list thing is still a small issue, but not a fatal flaw. -- Blue skies. Re: [JAWS-Users] What's a good database for use with jaws!
Depending on what you are using the database for, what platform you are using it on, and the interface being used, you will have varying degrees of success. I work on Oracle databases all day as my job. However, these are Linux based databases, I use JAWS and ssh into the boxes where the databases live, and thus the databases are 100% accessible because I just query the database directly through sqlplus. I will say that Oracle has done quite a lot of work in making their stuff accessible. Once you get the access bridge installed, even their java based forms, and other application software is quite accessible. I will give one huge example. I use their Grid Manager every day. This is a java-based web-based application that allows me to monitor all aspects of all the databases we manage. There are lots of nice spiffy graphs which, are obviously not accessible. However, right at the top of each graph is a link to click on that shows you a table of the data displayed in the graph. So, although I can't see the graph I can look at the data directly. Since MySQL is now owned by Oracle, hopefully they will work on the accessibility of that platform as well. -- Blue skies. Dan Rossi Senior Oracle Database Administrator Carnegie Mellon University. Re: [JAWS-Users] accessibility on gotomeeting and citrix online
I've had similar experiences with GoToMeeting. One caveat though. I worked with a conference organizer, and some how, we are not sure how, and we weren't able to reproduce it, but at some point, I was able to actually converse with him through the interface. The issue was that there is a bunch of controls on the screen, but JAWS refused to see them. Then, at some point, I was able to see all of the controls and interact with them, but was unable to do that during the actual live meeting. The conference organizer had done something along the lines of set my preferences differently during our test, and that put me in a different area when the our test conference started, which enabled me to see all the controls. However, when we tried that in the live conference, it didn't seem to work the same way. So, I will say that yes, in general it is mostly inaccessible, but it seems promising that it can be made to work. I think that should be a priority for Freedom Scientific since so many business related meetings are now being conducted via this platform. -- Blue skies. This may or may not be related to issues with online banking sites that people have mentioned, but I'll mention it here anyway just to muddy up the waters. A couple of weeks ago, I suddenly could not log into a critical web site here at work. I had just received a bunch of Microsoft updates the previous night. I restored my system to just before the updates were installed, and I suddenly could again log into that critical site. I started adding updates back, one at a time, and testing my ability to log into that site. I eventually found the culprit, Update KB2661254 Minimum key length for certificates. This update altered the behavior of Internet Explorer on web sites that used a certificate with a key length of less than 1024 bits. Essentially, it won't work. I had to uninstall KB2661254 and all is happy now. This update did not effect the way that FireFox interacted with these web sites. This is definitely not Al's problem as he said that when his wife clicked on the link, it worked. -- Blue skies. Dan Rossi Senior Oracle Database Administrator Carnegie Mellon University. Re: [JAWS-Users] Controlling how alt+tab works
I asked about alt-tab on a win 7 box a while ago as well. My experience on my win 7 box seems to be different than others. If I have three windows open, a, b, and c, I would expect to always alt-tab between the two windows I have most recently been working in, however, I have found that occasionally, I will alt-tab and instead of being in the window I was expecting, I end up in another window. It seems to me that it is the JAWS window that I almost always end up in rather than the window I was expecting. -- Blue skies. [JAWS-Users] Fire Fox and Webvisum.
I'm not saying that everyone should run out and download Fire Fox and start using it exclusively. I have both browsers on my machines. A week or so ago, I was trying to get into some site and the audio CAPTCHA was absolutely impossible. I tried many times to listen to it, cranked up the volume, but no joy. I didn't have FF on that particular box. It took me less than 15 minutes to download FF, install it, add the WebVisum plug-in, and kick some CAPTCHA butt. FF is not some big scary, completely unfamiliar program. It works a whole lot like IE. Another little story. A buddy of mine is experimenting and learning a new to him web programming language called AJAX. He wanted to make sure that his final product would be accessible to me. He wrote a very basic little web page and asked me to check it out. IE is my default browser and I went over to the page but couldn't make it do what he expected. He tried it on another machine, without adaptive tech, and using IE. No joy for him either. So, I fired up fire fox, went to the page, and it behaved perfectly well. It's always good to have multiple tools in your tool box. Even if you just install FF to defeat the occasional CAPTCHA, better to have that available than to not get passed a stupid CAPTCHA when you need to. -- Blue skies. Re: [JAWS-Users] combining multiple text files
You are asking for more than just a simple combination of two files. You want to be able to merge changes between two people working on the same file. There are ways to do this, but nothing easy. What you want is a Revision Control System, RCS, which is serious overkill for writing one script. Software developers use RCS systems all the time so that multiple developers can work on the same code base at the same time. I think you are just going to have to work your way through this manually. -- Blue skies. Dan Rossi Senior Oracle Database Administrator Carnegie Mellon University. Re: [JAWS-Users] Multi-line rich text edit boxes.
Luckily, unloading JAWS each time I need to fill in an edit box is not necessary. I can tab out or reverse tab out of this series of boxes then arrow my way back down. Very clugy but I'd rather find a better solution. I've just tried messing around with custom labels, but when I label one of them, it labels all four boxes with the same label, which is not terribly useful. -- Blue skies. [JAWS-Users] Multi-line rich text edit boxes.
Hello, I am attempting to use what is essentially a SharePoint form. I have no problem going through most of the form, using radio buttons, check boxes, and simple edit boxes. However, there are certain boxes that are multi-line edit boxes. When I tab into them, no label is announced, but I hear "rich text edit box". I can type into the box no problem, but I can't seem to close the edit box. Hitting the plus key just says PC cursor, instead of closing the edit box and reverting to the virtual cursor. The only way to get out of it is to tab, but in one section of this form, that just tabs me to the next rich text edit box, and since there is no label associated with the edit box, I don't know what box I am in. If I can close the edit box, go back to the virtual cursor, I can arrow down the screen, hearing the heading that states the purpose of the next edit box, then press e, and vwa la I am in the next box. So, is there some magic key that I am missing that closes a multi-line edit box? -- Blue skies. Dan Rossi Senior Oracle Database Administrator Carnegie Mellon University. Re: [JAWS-Users] Mozilla Firefox
There was a serious security hole in IE that was discovered recently, and code exploits were in the wild. It was serious enough that my university chose to recommend that everyone stop using IE until Microsoft released a fix for this hole. They even pushed FireFox out to all domain managed computers at the university. I've never seen a response like this before, so I thought it was worth warning a few lists I am on. Microsoft has released an update and you should make sure to install it as soon as possible. Your virus definitions would not have helped you in this case. If you had been lured into going to a maliciously crafted web site, or hit a legitimate site with a compromised ad on it, it was possible to have remote code executed on your machine, at the same level of permissions as the user running IE at the time. Since most people don't set up users with limited access to their own machine, most people are running with administrator privileges, so this could be pretty serious. Again, I rarely send out warnings of viruses or malware, but when I see a response like this from our security office, I believe it to be a credible and serious threat. Again, Microsoft has released a fix and you should update as soon as possible. -- Blue skies. Dan Rossi Senior Oracle Database Administrator Carnegie Mellon University. Re: [JAWS-Users] FaceBook Question
Like others have pointed out, you don't need a mobile app, just use your computer and go to m.facebook.com. I shout this from the highest towers all the time, but seems like no one ever hears it. If any web site, not just FaceBook, gives you trouble, try the mobile version. Mobile versions are usually stripped down, easier to navigate, have fewer graphics, blah blah blah. Audible.com giving you issues, try mobile.audible.com. Not every site has a mobile version. Not all mobile versions are created equal. But it is something to try if the regular site is problematic.
