Any possibility of adding a Driving Directions function to Research It? The

I know what you posted is from a training module. The problem is that does
not work for many excel 2010 users. What I posted is from a post on this

2014. It is the only way I have been able to get the result I want. As I
said in my first post, if any of the other ways work, God bless you and

I am in.

Ed asked specifically for column headers to be announced in Excel 2010.
There are additional directions for creating row header reading or column
and row header reading but the answer I wrote for column header reading is
in keeping with the latest preference from Erick. The newest copy of Excel
column and row headers presented by Erick does not suggest using the JAWS
method any more. Here is what he says at the beginning of ExcelColumn and
Row Headers:

Titles created using the Define Name feature of Excel - These titles are
part of the Excel file itself. This is the newest method of creating headers
for column and row titles. They are created by the author or user of the
workbook so that any subsequent use of the workbook does not require that
you or anyone else need to define them. This uses a built-in feature in
Excel and does not even require having JAWS or MAGic on the computer to
create headers that automatically work for JAWS and MAGic users. The name is
stored within the Excel workbook itself and is therefore independent of
different versions of JAWS and MAGic. In addition, the workbook can be
shared easily among different users without having to re-create the headers
or transfer an ancillary JSI (JAWS Script Initialization) file along with
the workbook.

Titles created using JAWS Quick Settings dialog box - These titles are saved
in a workbook-specific JSI file located in your personal settings folder, a
separate file that is created and has to accompany the workbook everywhere
it goes. If that JSI file is not present, for example when a new version of
JAWS or MAGic is installed, then JAWS or MAGic will not automatically
recognize any column and row headers as titles. Also, if you fail to put the
JSI file in the correct folder on the computer hard drive where JAWS or
MAGic can find it, headers will not read automatically.

As you can imagine, the preferred method of creating titles that read
automatically for all JAWS and MAGic users without having to worry about
transferring a JSI file to the proper location on the computer for each
workbook or for each version of JAWS and MAGic, is to use the Define Name
feature of Excel. In this DAISY book we will use this newer method.

Ed, try to follow the steps for having column headers read that I sent you.
If you have any problem with doing it feel free to contact me.

Take care.

Hi Ed;

I have been watching this thread. You have been given a host of ideas.

Over the last year I have tried all of them to no avail. If you have had
success, God bless you. Just delete this message.

If you are still trying to solve the problem, here is what Eric D. from FS
posted and it works for me.

From Eric D.

1. Save the file and give it a name you wish to use.

2. Now open the newly named file in Excel and move to Column A, Row 4, (this
is the intersection of the row and column headings and the next step is to
inform JAWS of that).

3. Press Insert + V to get into Quick Settings of JAWS for Excel.

4. Press the letter T, and then down arrow to the item that says Define
Name Column and Row Titles Override Off.

5. Press Space Bar a couple of times so the item above is set to On for the
Current File.

6. Now down arrow a few times to the item called: Column Titles to Row
Range. Press Space and you should hear it reflect 4, since you were on row
4.

7. Now down arrow once to the item called: Row Titles to Column Range.

Press Space and you should hear it reflect A, since you were in column A.

8. Tab 3 times now to the OK button and press enter to dismiss the Dialog
and you are done.

Hi Jaws listers,

example say I have the name of the column called Date and I am down the

Otherwise I have to arrow all the way to the top of the page to find out
what the name of the column is then arrow back down to the row I won't to

Can you just go to your unread message folder?
It's in your folder list under the search folder.
It's list all of your unread messages from all folders.

Can someone tell me the shortcut key to get to unread email?

All my new emails come in at the bottom, and I have a lot of email that I
have read at the top, and I have to arrow down through it.

In OE all I had to do is press the letter U, but it doesn't work in outlook

Thanks for all the help.

find it's headline on the viewer and go to it.

Here is the instructions to finding the full article:

Full stories begin at the first paragraph below the TweetMeme

That tells me that the full story starts below the TweetMeme. What is a

A guesstimate here. Once you get to the article, press the letter h
for Heading. JAWS will say, heading level 11, or whatever the
heading level of that heading is. Now go down a bit, past references
to sharing and Twitter and GoogleAd, and then the main article will
begin. Or, if feeling a bit adventurous, press the letter p to
highlight the next paragraph at some point during the preceding
navigation. Pressing p will bring you to the beginning of a next
paragraph, and shift+p brings you back a paragraph.

[JAWS-Users] silencing the talking heads

Hi;

I am using IE 11 and Jaws 15 on a w7 computer. When I go to a news item on

Hello, David F and Eric D,
wow! Thank you both, for all this Excel Check Book information and
assistance. Yet, I may have a loaded question. Can either of you, provide
a Check Writing and printing program that works favorably and relatively
easy with Jaws and that can be printed up in a public and business accepted
manner, and where No format questions will be targeted back to a user, such
as myself!

The reason I ask, is I just went through a check payment conflict with a
very notable cable company, where their computer system misread my most
recent payment check, and for the last week my cable service has been turned
off, each day at 11:45 AM; and it has been quite a battle with them, and I
even had to get my bank involved to back my payment of $100; where the cable
company's computer said I only paid $10. This is why I am asking this
question; and I am seeking Technical and quality advice, so that this
situation my be avoided in the future. To let you both know, I write my
checks using a plastic check template, and on the line for writing the
dollar amount in words, I Print those words in Capital Letters, for easy
recognition, and I never have written any check that has cents on it, as
they are always written in an even dollar amounts. Yet, this careful
technique failed me, in this situation; and that is Why I am asking such a
question, to evade this from happening in the future.

Thank you both, for any and all assistance.

Respectfully

Book
Register Sample file

All,

If you plan to set this up and try it, I have given more detailed
instructions for the Check Book Register file in Excel below. It
takes a
little bit to understand this setup, but once you get it, you'll
find it
works quite well. If you have trouble, I'm sure someone on this
list would
be happy to Tandem to your computer and help you set it up so you
can try it
out.

Here you go:
Get the file from:
http://www.jaws-users.com/text/Office/Sample-checkbook-register.h
tml

1. Save the file and give it a name you wish to use.
2. Now open the newly named file in Excel and move to Column A,
Row 4, (this
is the intersection of the row and column headings and the next
step is to
inform JAWS of that).
3. Press Insert + V to get into Quick Settings of JAWS for
Excel.
4. Press the letter T, and then down arrow to the item that says
Define
Name Column and Row Titles Override Off.
5. Press Space Bar a couple of times so the item above is set to
On for the
Current File.
6. Now down arrow a few times to the item called: Column Titles
to Row
Range. Press Space and you should hear it reflect 4, since you
were on row
4.
7. Now down arrow once to the item called: Row Titles to Column
Range.
Press Space and you should hear it reflect A, since you were in
column A.
8. Tab 3 times now to the OK button and press enter to dismiss
the Dialog
and you are done.

In the future, anytime you open a spread sheet with the name you
gave this
one, it will assume that Row 4 has the column headings and Column
A has the
row headings. If you are moving around in the area below and to
the right of
that intersecting point, it should read the headings as you
navigate to make
it easier to understand where you are.

Hope this Helps,
Eric

Hi Roj,
To get JAWS to read column row titles, do the following.
1. Click on the cell that intersects the title row and column. In most cases
cell A1.
2. Right click and select Define Name
3. Type Title.. without the quotes in the name field. It is important to
type the 2 dots after Title. As the first dot defines the row and the second
dot defines the column used.
4. Tab until you hear OK and press Enter.
5. Save your worksheet by hitting Ctrl + S.
The procedure only works if you can edit and save the worksheet you are
reading.

1. Press insert-v for quick settings; JAWS says Quick settings Excel

2. Tab once. JAWS says Excel settings, open, 8 items.
3. Arrow down once, JAWS says, formatting open, one item. 4. Press the

Good luck!

I am trying to get Excel to stop reading cell location as I move
 around in
the spread sheet. I have not been able to find a place in the
 settings
Center for the setting. I have also tried the procedure Ann spelled
 out
below. When I tab once as she instructs I get only the general
 settings and
 nothing about Excel.

 All help appreciated.

 Hi, Barry,

In JAWS 13.0.638 what I do is
 1. Press insert-v for quick settings; JAWS says Quick settings Excel
dialog, search box, edit. 2. Tab once. JAWS says Excel settings,
open, 8 items. 3. Arrow down once, JAWS says, formatting open, one
 item. 4. Press the
letter 't' twice. Now I'm in the list of title reading options.

 Good luck!

 Ann

Re: [JAWS-Users] Can't read Word docs in 2003

2012-02-21 Thread Dave Maynard
Ann, Flor elf

Thanks to all of you the problem is solved. I am not sure exactly what
fixed it, but I will explain what I did by making notes within your
instructions. Your instructions will be followed by my comments starting
***DCM. Thanks to all.

Dave

Flor :
Another thing you might put on the list is, that the Normal.dot (Word
Template) file might have become corrupted. In that case, deleting the
normal.dot file (with Microsoft Word closed) will fix it, as the next
time you open word it will replace with a fresh normal.dot .

***DCM - I did that first.

Elf:
one thing I would do is go to the start menu shortcuts, hit the apps key on

the application link, open the properties dialog, and in the box where it
says run: combo box arrow down to maximized and try opening it and
reading something this way.
***DCM This was the second thing I did. I then restarted the computer and
opened a document. For the first time I was able to get to the menus with
the PC cursor. I did Ann's checklist including switching from Print mode
to normal.

Ann:
I'm guessing you have tried everything on the list, but just in case ...

1. Is the application maximized?
***DCM Yes

2. Is the document maximized?
***DCM Yes

3. Is the zoom set to 75% or thereabouts?
***DCM Yes

4. is the font a reasonable size?
***DCM Times New Roman 12

5. Is the font something JAWS can read easily?
***DCM Times New Roman 12

6. What does the status line say?
***DCM Didn't look, it was working.

7 If you select-all, copy, paste the document into either Wordpad,
Notepad, or into Word, can you then read it?
***DCM Didn't have to, it was working.

You are right, it is strange. I set the view to normal, but there was no
change. Still no reading of a doc document and no reading of the headers

must be something with the system at work.

The page up and page down in Jaws 12 do not move the cursor in .doc

I've confirmed that JAWS is picking up the HTML tag, HR, and

If you were using braille with JAWS, you'd have to read the line of
dashes that the separator actually is. Which would you prefer? It
actually does represent something that's really on the page.

If you are comfortable working in your user's default scripts you can find

Tom,

In the, there's a million ways to do anything in Windows, category, here
is another way to do what you want.

Once you are in the command prompt, pipe the output of any command to a
file, then you can open the file with notepad, or whatever you want. For
example.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\dr25dir dir.txt
C:\Documents and Settings\dr25notepad dir.txt

Volume in drive C has no label.
  Volume Serial Number is 864E-9058

  Directory of C:\Documents and Settings\dr25

Note that there is a double greater than sign after the command dir and
before the file name dir.txt.

I did use the virtual stuff to cut and paste some of the above. After
going into cmd.exe I typed my command, then hit insert-alt-w then
activated the virtual cursor with numpad plus, then held down the shift
key and moved around, then hit control-c.

Although, I do tend to just pipe to a file because that is often mor
useful for me. Depends on what I need to do with the output.

Hope that helps.

[JAWS-Users] Control+Alt+J

2011-09-28 Thread Dave Maynard
Hello;

I have Jaws 10, Jaws 12, and now Jaws 13 on my XP computer. Jaws 12 is set
as the default.

I had Control+Alt+J set to launch Jaws 10. I went to the properties of the
Jaws 13 desk top icon and assigned Control+Alt+ J as the launch hot key.

I unloaded Jaws 12 and pressed Control+Alt+ J. Jaws 10 came up. The
properties of the Jaws 13 icon still shows Control+Alt+J as the hot key

In the past assigning a key stroke to a newer version would override the old
setting. This is not a big deal but I am wondering if this new scenario is
what FS expected. t

Ok, this is the jaws list not programming but I will tell you about
the C# compilers below. I guess David chimes in when he's tired of
reading about programming smile So, this will be my last reply -
please continue this thread on the programming list.

The C# compiler is located in
 C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\csc.exe for the 32-bit
 version and 64-bit
 C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319\csc.exe
Csc.exe is a command line compiler, so you have to open a Windows
console /
command prompt to compile and read compiler warnings and errors etc.

The above path is related to version 4 of the .NET framework.

 I recommend adding C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319 to
your path environment variable. Doing that will allow you to simply
type csc.exe some_program.cs when you're ready to compile your
program. If you don't add it to your path you'll need to type:
 C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\csc.exe some_program.cs
every
 time you compile.
A bit cumbersome to say the least.

So, let's pretend that you've written the well known Hello, World!
Program in C# and named the file containing the C# source code
HelloWorld.cs. To compile the program type: Csc.exe HelloWorld.cs

 This will produce HelloWorld.exe.
If your code contains errors the compiler will tell you on which
 line etc.

 Good luck!

I had difficulty with the new JAWS RC release. After installation, I
could do nothing in Excel 2010 except get to the ribbons! They have
totally revamped JAWS for Excel. It is not sluggish anymore. I also
noticed nice changes, such as announcing when you are entering different
title regions and the region is announced when in the verbosity settings
dialog.

If you always set the row and column titles through the verbosity
settings dialog, press Space on the title override option to get the
override for all files option. This should only need to be done
once. Them, you should only need to open this dialog on the desired
cell and set which titles are wanted and press Space on the row and / or
column option to set this cell.

Hello Dave,

I don't know if you have ever been sighted or not, but one of the greatest
things about being sighted and dealing with windows was the fact that one
could drag and drop icons and start menu items into any other start menu
sub-menu one wanted.

For example, one has various games for the blind installed on their
computer, yet Windows feels the need to place a games menu in the start
menu.

Naturally, I would like to place all of my games, blind and sighted alike,
into the same menu to cut down on clutter.

I can guarantee you you can't do this by copying and pasting, you literally
have to drag and drop the icons into the menu, otherwise you're just
twisting your thumbs in the air.

Don't knock something you don't use as being unnecessary, as others may
require that same function for something you never thought of using it for.

I am having problems with the Control+DownArrow key stroke in version 10.
While reading a document I press that keystroke and I hear blank. The

In all prior versions this keystroke will move the cursor to the beginning
of the next paragraph and continue reading.

I have merged the 9.0 version settings so everything should work the same

Subject: [JAWS-Users] making alternative keystrokes in keyboard manager

Hi, I had mentioned that I was using alternative keys on my keyboard to do
the work I'm doing more efficiently. I recently got a microsoft natural
urgonomic 4000 keyboard. It's one of the split keyboards. The issue I'm
running into is that this keyboard doesn't have a right windows key. It only
has the left windows key. On the right side it only has the alt,
application, and control keys. For some of my newer keystrokes I was using
the windows keys interchangeably. Now, I have had to change some things
around again since I can't even use the application key as a valid part of a
key combination in the JAWS keyboard manager. Because of this I have
switched a few keystrokes around to accomodate the issues. There are two
keystrokes however, that I need to occasionally access with one hand. The
problem is that these two keystrokes employ the windows key, which is now a
left handed key only and then a couple of the letter keys further off to the
righthand side of the keyboard. My thought is to possibly make an
alternative keystroke for these two commands, one of them being my current
keystroke, and another keystroke which would employ the alt key instead of
the windows key. Doing this would allow me to press the right alt key along
with either letter to execute the tasks which were assigned to the two
respective windows key combinations. I saw this concept used at least a
couple times within the default keyboard manager itself by freedom
scientific. For example, moving forward or back a word has two active, valid
key commands. My newest key command is listed first, and then the command
which uses insert left arrow or right arrow is listed right after. Does
adding an active alternative keystroke like this for a particular command of
my choosing take scripting know-how? If it does is there a specific learning
tutorial I can use that is directly related to such a task as the one I've
described above? Either that, or is there anyone on this list who might be
confident enough to walk me through this process. I only have 2 keystrokes
for which I'd like to make alternatives. Thanks for any help or suggestions
you might have to offer. Kate
