Re: [JAWS-Users] which jaws?

2018-01-14 Thread Dave...Oregonian
JAWS 2018 is the latest version; JAWS 18 was released in 2017. FS decided to
try and remove the confusion they caused.

A major paradigm shift in how JAWS works "under the hood" took place between
JAWS 16 and JAWS 17. And frankly I've been less than satisfied with JAWS
performance since then. Some very slow reactions to simple JAWS commands,
which used to be very responsive. So I often unload 2018 and go back to
version 16, just to get things done sooner.

Lately I've read a lot about some of you not caring for jaws 18 and having
some problems with it, but liking jaws 2018 better. It is confusing.this is
the first time I've ever remembered a jaws being called after a year; so is
jaws 2018 just that, no 18. something, and which is better if someone was to
upgrade? A lot of you seem to like 16 and 17, but just because I need to
upgrade should it really be the latest? Thanks for any input. Judy & Libby

Really makes no sense to try and read the entire spreadsheet, cell-by-cell.
Each cell is its own focused element. JAWS will not do a say all in a

Morning all.
I was working on an Excel 13 worksheet, and I found I could not use the say
all command in a spreadsheet. Is this something with excel, or is it a jaws
function that is not accessible with spreadsheets? I am using Windows 10,
Jaws 2018 and Excel 13 on a Dell laptop. Thanks.

Re: [JAWS-Users] reading empty PDF document with JAWS 2018

2018-01-10 Thread Dave...Oregonian
That seems a bit vague, even to me. Do you bring up the file list in the
"Open" dialog of Notepad? If so, you also need to change the file type to
"all files" to see any PDF document.

I'm thinking that your idea is based on JAWS 2018 with the capability to
recognize a PDF file directly from a file list in Windows Explorer, and not
opening it. If so, then Notepad has nothing to do with the process -- the
virtual viewer will come up without having Notepad open.

I'm not sure the requester has said what version of JAWS is being used.

Also the context menu that pops up does not say "OCR" it instead says
"Recognize with JAWS".

easy.
open note pad then go to your files. but don't open them.
open a context menu on them and use the ocr option and wait a few seconds
for
it to process the text.
do not press the escape key or it will close. then you can view the text
of
the pdf file.
the acuracy of the text depends on how much video errors there are in the
scanned image.

What version of JAWS? You need to have the document open in Adobe, then
remember that the convenient OCR keystrokes are:

Insert+Spacebar
Release to hear a click sound
Press the letter O
release
Press the letter D
release
You should hear a response that it is working

I recall that this was available in JAWS 17 or later.

Re: [JAWS-Users] openbook

2018-01-06 Thread Dave...Oregonian
Either f4 or spacebar to launch a scan. However if you have Openbook in edit
mode, then only f4 will launch a scan. The default Openbook voice is very
similar to eloquence, so likely that is what you are hearing.

Adrian,
The Pearl needs a USB connection to a computer, and it requires either using
JAWS 2018 in Convenient OCR mode, or Openbook. It is portable, as it folds
down into a roughly 3x3x20 inch case. Mine sits on my desk ready to use.

Very quick compared to a standard flatbed scanner, since it snaps a picture
rather than scanning across the document.

Re: [JAWS-Users] VFO's Pearl Camera offer

2017-12-16 Thread Dave...Oregonian
Agree with Jim, but since the Pearl has a very long depth of field, a
curvature of a books surface is not at all critical, unless the curvature
causes any text to appear distorted. I just press down along the margins to
make it flat.

Also there is a recognition mode in Openbook where you have the camera
detect motion and the lack thereof. So you can lay down the book, allow the
snap, then rotate or turn a page and the camera will wait until there is no
motion before snapping the next image. This is a very fast way to scan in
several pages in succession.

To me, that is the biggest benefit to the Pearl camera approach to scanning.
The least is that it will not work with other mainstream programs -- not
Adobe, not others. Strictly JAWS and Openbook.

Hi, Adrian

I have the Pearl/Open Book combination. I use the camera for physical
scanning. It scans faster than a flat or curved bed scanner but
scanning books must be done face up, presenting a bit of a problem for
pressing down securely to get a good scan read. I resolved the press
down issue by putting a piece of glass over the book to be scanned and
pressing down. Scanning is then pretty comparable to the larger
flat/curved bed machines. The camera is mounted on a tripod, which
folds up for travel. In all, I'm pleased with the setup.

Don’t know if sluggishness is quite right for what has been occurring with
Jaws 2018 and Windows 7 on the internet. I have been visiting the Epson,
Amazon and Staples Web sites the last few days and whenever you click on a
link Jaws goes silent for 15 or 20 seconds before resuming speech. Sometimes
I have to tab away from the page to get Jaws talking again. I think this
started with 2018. We also have a pc running Windows 10 and Jaws 2018 and it
does not have this problem. Anyone know what is going on with this issue?

Have you ever started typing name or email address into Outlook's To field

There have been several questions about OCR and saving the scanned results.
This is what I did. This is a bit detailed, so delete as you please.
Smile.

I'm using Windows 10 1709 Creator update, Jaws 2018 and Word 2010.

I have several image files saved so was able to test using these formats"
PDF and JPG.

Rather than first opening the PDF file, waiting for the

"alert, empty document,"

message, and then scanning with the layered keystrokes, insert-spacebar, o,
then d,

with the PDF file selected in a folder in Documents, I used the context menu
key, also known as the application key, and arrowed down to

Recognize with JAWS.

I pressed enter and after a second or two, JAWS said

Started.

The scanned information was there to read. I was able to select and copy it
with the usual Windows commands, either shift-down arrow to select, or
control a, to select all, and control c to copy.

I then pasted the results into Word, and there it was, to be saved as usual.
I did not try to save in Notepad, assuming that if all worked in Word,
notepad would be no different.

As to the second format, a print letter with an embedded picture, scanned
in Kurzweil and saved as a JPG image, it worked a bit different.

All went the same until I pasted the copied information into Word. Again, I
used the context menu key on the file name to arrow to

Recognize with JAWS.

I was told that the image was right-side up, and there was the text waiting
to be read. But when I copied and pasted it into Word, Word was not happy,
smile, and kept giving me information about

non-uniform tables, row and column information. Rather than playing with my
table settings in the JAWS quick settings menu, I figured notepad might be a
better option in this case.

When I pasted the same copied results into notepad, the file read as it had
when scanned by JAWS.

At this point, just because I prefer saving in Word, I reselected the
information in notepad, copied it, and pasted it into Word. Word was no
longer cross, muttering about tables, so all was well.

For those who have made it to the end, HTH. Smile.

Kevin, no horse hockey here. I suspect you just need to delete the Word
document text before you paste the Notepad text back. Steps:

Select all in Word
Ctrl C copy
Del to clean it out.
Open Notepad
Ctrl V to paste
Esc to remove highlight
Ctrl A to select again
Ctrl C to copy
Go back to the empty Word document
Ctrl V to paste.

I am intrigued by those other suggestions of Alt + H + E and alt, ctrl,
shift, S with F6.
Have to try them some time.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Temporary loss of speech

2017-11-12 Thread Dave...Oregonian
John,

Agree that it's not RAM. I suspect that since JAWS 17, when they came out
with a new paradigm for how it works "under the hood", they began to use
some memory space that is often crowded by other applications, or perhaps
subjugated in the processing hierarchy. All I know is, that for any fairly
heavy processing (painting an Internet Explorer screen, loading a PDF file,
launching Outlook) JAWS often shuts down and comes back later announcing
"Home Use Edition". Very irritating. I've turned off the auto restart
capability of JAWS in every version since 17. If a program announces that
it's not refreshing, then I'd rather know that than to just have JAWS shut
down for 20 seconds or more.

This temporary loss of Jaws speech seems to be quite common when involving
software which uses a lot of RAM. Here's another interesting observation.
I have created shortcut keys for loading Jaws and other reading software.
During that temporary silence, using the shortcut key for Jaws
(CONTROL+ALT+J) doesn't work for restarting jaws. This is a bit out of my
league but could it have something to do with not enough RAM in the system?
If so, that would be a surprise to me. My new desktop at work has 18 gig of
RAM. Yet, it still goes silent temporarily when loading certain on-line
packages.

I temporarily lose speech often when accessing an SD card in my built-in
card reader. Here's what happens.

When I insert my SD card into the card reader, most times I lose speech for
about 20 seconds and each time I take some action the same thing happens.
For example, I must wait about 20 seconds or so after inserting the card
before I can arrow up and down to locate a folder. Once I get speech, I can
arrow up and down fine, but as soon as I enter on a folder name to open the
folder, I lose speech again for about 20 seconds. The same thing happens
when I press the applications key to bring up the context menu. I must wait
the 20 seconds or so before I can arrow through the menu.

I'm running JAWS 2018 on Windows 10 version 1703, although this same problem
occurred on JAWS 18 on this computer. This only happens with SD cards and
not absolutely every time, but most times. Accessing the local SSD, external
USB drives and network drives all behave as they should.

I suspect this might be an issue with some setting in Windows 10, but I have
no idea what setting or where to look for it. And perhaps it's something
altogether different. I'm open to all suggestions.

Thanks,
Jeff

First, which version of Windows are you running? If you're running Windows
7 you're using the wrong keystroke to open the Task Manager. If you run
Jaws from the system tray it won't show in the list of running programs,
Insert + F10. Press, Insert + F11, & see if it's in the system tray. When
you open the Task Manager for Windows 7, Control, Shift, + Escape, which Tab
are you looking at? There are 5 Tabs in the Task Manager: Applications,
Processes, Services, Performance, & Networking. If Jaws is running it
should show in more than 1 of the tabs, but check the Applications tab, & if
Jaws is running & it isn't showing here, someone else needs to give you more
help because I sure as hell don't know what to tell you at that point. LOL
Take care. Mike. Dodgers, try again next year!

Re: [JAWS-Users] Temporary loss of speech

2017-11-10 Thread Dave...Oregonian
I'm more suspicious that it's just JAWS. Ever since JAWS 17, there has been
a "pause" effect most often occurring when opening a PDF document, and
opening Outlook. I also noticed it pausing when launching ResearchIt, or the
JAWS find on a web page. Always around 15 to 20 seconds of silence before
speech returns. Still happens with JAWS 2018, and I'm unhappy to hear that
it seems to also happen with your Windows 10. I'm still running Windows 7
32-bit on a Dell Latitude. This never happened with JAWS 16 or earlier.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Temporary loss of speech

I temporarily lose speech often when accessing an SD card in my built-in
card reader. Here's what happens.

When I insert my SD card into the card reader, most times I lose speech
for about 20 seconds and each time I take some action the same thing
happens. For example, I must wait about 20 seconds or so after inserting
the card before I can arrow up and down to locate a folder. Once I get
speech, I can arrow up and down fine, but as soon as I enter on a folder
name to open the folder, I lose speech again for about 20 seconds. The
same thing happens when I press the applications key to bring up the
context menu. I must wait the 20 seconds or so before I can arrow
through the menu.

I'm running JAWS 2018 on Windows 10 version 1703, although this same
problem occurred on JAWS 18 on this computer. This only happens with SD
cards and not absolutely every time, but most times. Accessing the local
SSD, external USB drives and network drives all behave as they should.

I suspect this might be an issue with some setting in Windows 10, but I
have no idea what setting or where to look for it. And perhaps it's
something altogether different. I'm open to all suggestions.

Thanks,
Jeff

Well, the first time you install JAWS you need to authorize it, and to do
that you need the code. I guess if you could get the code some other way,
you could authorize the download. if you install it and don't authorize it,
it will run in 40 minute mode.

You should get one the first time you buy JAWS and if you have an SMA you
should get one each time a new version of JAWS comes out. That original CD
on the jacket will note your authorization code which you will need if you
have a crash and have to reinstall, or if you get a new computer and have to
reinstall, as the SMA upgrade CDs do not note that code. The CD usually
comes several weeks after the release of the new version, so you may opt to

are not recognized via internet explorer?

Jaws does not read them at all.

Jerry,

Each time you install a major version of JAWS, one of your upgrades will
disappear. If you install JAWS 18, you will be down to 1 upgrade. When you
install JAWS 2018 you will be down to zero upgrades.

If you never install a JAWS version above 17, you will always have two
upgrades available. However you will not get any upgrades beyond JAWS 2018,
because your SMA allows you two upgrades past your current version of JAWS
17. If you want to go beyond JAWS 2018, I recommend you install both JAWS 18
and JAWS 2018, and contact VFO to purchase a new pair of upgrades. You won't
be able to go beyond JAWS 2018 if you don't purchase any new SMA. And I
suspect that not purchasing new SMA later this year will mean you will pay
big $$$ if/when you finally do upgrade past JAWS 2018.

If this is as clear as mud, call VFO at 800-444-4443 in the U.S. or your

wanted them to put the files on the drive. They have recovery software that
does not work on my win 7 machine. After a few attempts I called back. I was
told that my computer with 4gb does not have enough memory. I do believe
that a win 7 32 bit machine can only use 4 gb. I plan to call a few computer

Re: [JAWS-Users] question about large external hard drives

2017-10-16 Thread Dave...Oregonian
David,

I have a couple internal 4Tb drives in my desktop tower, but have no idea
what GPT is. I formatted mine (or ensured that they are formatted) as NTFS.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] question about large external hard drives

I have been considering getting a 4 terabyte drive or even possibly larger
and I am already aware that if is an internal drive that goes in a case it
has to be formatted as GPT. Conversely I figure if it is already in its’ own
case that it is most likely already formatted.

I was just curious if there was anything else to make note or be aware of is
all.

Re: [JAWS-Users] external drive problem

2017-10-15 Thread Dave...Oregonian
Lenny,

This has happened to me. Try this:

Disconnect the drive via your USB cable.
Shut down your computer.
Start up your computer and wait until you get to the desktop.
Connect your USB cable.

Hopefully this will work. If not, then you might want to try a system
restore back to before you last saw that drive.

I have a Seagate ex drive that I use to backup on my win 7 machine. I do not
know when it started but today under my computer it is no longer listed.
Device manager reports that it is working correctly and that I have the
newest driver installed. I restarted the computer several times and the
drive is not listed. I think it was about 2 weeks ago when I last used it.
Pulling out the usb cable I hear the tone alert likewise when I plug it back
in again I hear the tones. Any thoughts on how I can correct this?
Thanks
