Re: [JAWS-Users] which jaws?
JAWS 2018 is the latest version; JAWS 18 was released in 2017. FS decided to try and remove the confusion they caused. A major paradigm shift in how JAWS works "under the hood" took place between JAWS 16 and JAWS 17. And frankly I've been less than satisfied with JAWS performance since then. Some very slow reactions to simple JAWS commands, which used to be very responsive. So I often unload 2018 and go back to version 16, just to get things done sooner. Lately I've read a lot about some of you not caring for jaws 18 and having some problems with it, but liking jaws 2018 better. It is confusing.this is the first time I've ever remembered a jaws being called after a year; so is jaws 2018 just that, no 18. something, and which is better if someone was to upgrade? A lot of you seem to like 16 and 17, but just because I need to upgrade should it really be the latest? Thanks for any input. Re: [JAWS-Users] reading empty PDF document with JAWS 2018
That seems a bit vague, even to me. Do you bring up the file list in the "Open" dialog of Notepad? If so, you also need to change the file type to "all files" to see any PDF document. I'm thinking that your idea is based on JAWS 2018 with the capability to recognize a PDF file directly from a file list in Windows Explorer, and not opening it. If so, then Notepad has nothing to do with the process -- the virtual viewer will come up without having Notepad open. I'm not sure the requester has said what version of JAWS is being used. Also the context menu that pops up does not say "OCR" it instead says "Recognize with JAWS". What version of JAWS? You need to have the document open in Adobe, then remember that the convenient OCR keystrokes are: Insert+Spacebar Release to hear a click sound Press the letter O release Press the letter D release You should hear a response that it is working I recall that this was available in JAWS 17 or later. Re: [JAWS-Users] VFO's Pearl Camera offer
Agree with Jim, but since the Pearl has a very long depth of field, a curvature of a books surface is not at all critical, unless the curvature causes any text to appear distorted. I just press down along the margins to make it flat. Also there is a recognition mode in Openbook where you have the camera detect motion and the lack thereof. So you can lay down the book, allow the snap, then rotate or turn a page and the camera will wait until there is no motion before snapping the next image. This is a very fast way to scan in several pages in succession. To me, that is the biggest benefit to the Pearl camera approach to scanning. The least is that it will not work with other mainstream programs -- not Adobe, not others. Strictly JAWS and Openbook. I use the camera for physical scanning. It scans faster than a flat or curved bed scanner but scanning books must be done face up, presenting a bit of a problem for pressing down securely to get a good scan read. I resolved the press down issue by putting a piece of glass over the book to be scanned and pressing down. Scanning is then pretty comparable to the larger flat/curved bed machines. The camera is mounted on a tripod, which folds up for travel. In all, I'm pleased with the setup. Rather than first opening the PDF file, waiting for the "alert, empty document," message, and then scanning with the layered keystrokes, insert-spacebar, o, then d, with the PDF file selected in a folder in Documents, I used the context menu key, also known as the application key, and arrowed down to Recognize with JAWS. I pressed enter and after a second or two, JAWS said Started. The scanned information was there to read. I was able to select and copy it with the usual Windows commands, either shift-down arrow to select, or control a, to select all, and control c to copy. I then pasted the results into Word, and there it was, to be saved as usual. I did not try to save in Notepad, assuming that if all worked in Word, notepad would be no different. As to the second format, a print letter with an embedded picture, scanned in Kurzweil and saved as a JPG image, it worked a bit different. All went the same until I pasted the copied information into Word. Again, I used the context menu key on the file name to arrow to Recognize with JAWS. I was told that the image was right-side up, and there was the text waiting to be read. But when I copied and pasted it into Word, Word was not happy, smile, and kept giving me information about non-uniform tables, row and column information. Rather than playing with my table settings in the JAWS quick settings menu, I figured notepad might be a better option in this case. When I pasted the same copied results into notepad, the file read as it had when scanned by JAWS. At this point, just because I prefer saving in Word, I reselected the information in notepad, copied it, and pasted it into Word. Word was no longer cross, muttering about tables, so all was well. Re: [JAWS-Users] Temporary loss of speech
John, Agree that it's not RAM. I suspect that since JAWS 17, when they came out with a new paradigm for how it works "under the hood", they began to use some memory space that is often crowded by other applications, or perhaps subjugated in the processing hierarchy. All I know is, that for any fairly heavy processing (painting an Internet Explorer screen, loading a PDF file, launching Outlook) JAWS often shuts down and comes back later announcing "Home Use Edition". Very irritating. I've turned off the auto restart capability of JAWS in every version since 17. If a program announces that it's not refreshing, then I'd rather know that than to just have JAWS shut down for 20 seconds or more. This is a bit out of my league but could it have something to do with not enough RAM in the system? If so, that would be a surprise to me. My new desktop at work has 18 gig of RAM. I'm more suspicious that it's just JAWS. Ever since JAWS 17, there has been a "pause" effect most often occurring when opening a PDF document, and opening Outlook. I also noticed it pausing when launching ResearchIt, or the JAWS find on a web page. Always around 15 to 20 seconds of silence before speech returns. Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS Weirdness
Jerry, You may have a setting you need to change... 1. Insert +6 to open settings center. 2. Press Ctrl+Shift+D to enable default settings. 3. Type the word Keyboard in the edit field. 4. Tab into the list. 5. Arrow down until you hear Keyboard. 6. Right arrow to open this group. 7. Right arrow to open the General group. 8. F6 to jump over to the dialog window. 9. Tab until you hear Differentiate Between Left and Right Paired Keys. 10. Make sure this is unchecked. 11. F6 to go back to the Settings Center List. 12. Tab to OK. 13. Press Enter. See if that fixes the problem. Re: [JAWS-Users] saga of the Seagate drive
Lenny, Bummer. I lost a 2 Tb drive a few months back. Fortunately I was able to get it to read sporadically enough to gather the data that was essential, then I cut it open with pliers and a screwdriver to see what makes it tick. Now a new 4 Tb replaced it. They have recovery software that does not work on my win 7 machine. After a few attempts I called back. I was told that my computer with 4gb does not have enough memory. I do believe that a win 7 32 bit machine can only use 4 gb. I plan to call a few computer shops for estimates. --- Please visit my web page It’s motivational, inspirational with a touch of humor There is also a very extensive resource list for the blind http://www.LennyMcHugh.com International Brotherhood of Magicians member #43990 For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/ For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
