I use the hot key 6 for version 16 and 7 for version 17- always just using

Hi LeDon,

It might be a good idea to leave a 2nd version of Jaws on your computer.
Many people do this just in case they have a problem, let's say Jaws 17
isn't reading a webpage correctly, you can then unload Jaws 17 & start Jaws
16 to finish what you're doing. Personally I run Jaws 16 as my default
because Jaws 17 doesn't work with Outlook Express well at all.
Take care.

have jaws sixteen and seventeen on my computer at the same time? How do I
find out. And if I do still have jaws sixteen on my computer, how do I
remove it? Thank you.

Win 10 and Jaws 17.

I am having difficulty with the Jaws start up. Jaws does not start
automatically nor do I get the Windows chimes at start up. I have followed
the steps in the Jaws help dialogue:
a.. Select the Start JAWS at the Log On Screen check box.
b.. Clear the Start JAWS after Log On for all Users check box.
c.. Select Always in the Start JAWS after Log On for this User combo box.
d.. click OK to save settings.
Each time I do the above I get chimes when I click OK and Jaws goes silent
and I have to hit escape to get it talking again.
When I go back to the dialogue the first two check marks are reversed.
The same settings are set in the start up wizard. What am I doing wrong?

Hi Joanne,

Here you go:
The steps below are the best, most in depth, and most thorough way of
repairing Jaws according to Freedom Scientific Tech Support.

Note; jaws11 is the example, however, this will work for 12, 13, 14, & 15 as
well.

1. Place a copy of the Jaws executible version that you want to repair into
the main root of the " C " drive. For example; If you are running Jaws11
most recent you would paste a copy of " J11.0.1430-32bit.exe " into the main
root of the " C " drive. To open the main root of the " C " drive, go to
the desktop, press enter on My Computer, press enter on Local disk C, and
now you have the main root of the " C " drive open.
2. With the Jaws " .exe " pasted into the "C" drive, highlight the " .exe ",
and press F2 as if you were going to edit this line of text. now press
control + C to copy this Jaws executible, press escape to close the edit
field, and press Alt + F4 to close the C drive.
What you want to do is place just the title of the Jaws version into the
Windows Run Dialogue box and not the file. If you were to place the Jaws
executible into the Run box without copying as you did as per the
instructions above you would have pasted the whole file into the Run Box
instead of just the title.
3. Now that you have just the title copied to the clipboard, press Windows
key + R to open the Run Dialogue Box. Type, remember to type a capitalC ,"
C:\ " without the quotes or
spaces and press control + V to paste the Jaws title, press your end key to
take the cursor to the end of the title and type in the following " /type
repair" without the quotes but, with the spaces . Below is what your line
of text should look / read like.

C:\J11.0.1447-32bit.exe /type repair

Read character by character to make sure you have put in the proper spaces,
Forward & back slashes and text. press the home key to go to the front of
the title and press enter to start the repair.

A 2nd way to do the same thing.
From: Brian Lee

You might have already resolved the problem, but if not here is a link that
you can use to download the newest update for your 64-bit installation of
JAWS. Information about performing the repair is shown below after the
download link.

ftp://ftp.freedomscientific.com/users/hj/private/WebFiles/JAWS/J11.0.1430-64
bit.exe

After downloading the file you can do the following steps to repair the
installation:

1. Use Windows key with R to bring up the run dialog box.

2. Use tab key to the browse button and press spacebar.

3. Browse to the downloaded JAWS setup file and press enter key.

4. Use tab key to move to where JAWS says "open colon edit combo", press
the end key and then press spacebar.

5. Type in /Type repair, (that is first type a slash followed immediately
by the word type then a space and then the word repair.

6. Use tab key to the OK button and press enter key.

7. Follow the prompts.

Take care.
Brian Lee

3rd way:
From: Joseph FreeTech
If you want a step-by-step try this...

To run a repair locate the installer for the version of JAWS you are
currently using. Be absolutely certain the version of jaws you are running
and it's installer are identical. JAWS 16.x.y.z must match with JAWS
16.x.y.z.

Press Shift+F10 or Windows applications key then down arrow to the following
entry and press enter:
run as administrator.
Note: you may have to enter your admin password, and you may have to press
Alt+Y to bypass UAC.

The installation will begin.
Note: JAWS will probably revert back to it's default speed and language as
if you were installing JAWS for the first time.

After a few clicks during the initial loading process, you will be asked
what type of installation you would like to complete. Tab through this
dialogue and choose the following:
repair
Note: this dialogue might show a combo box, which means you should use your
up or down arrows to choose the repair option.

Tab to "next" and press enter.

The repair will begin and you will hear clicks implying JAWS is doing it's
thing.

If you need to repeat what was spoken, press Insert+B to read the entire
screen once again.

Please let me know if this helps, or if you need more info.

Joseph the free tech guy!
All are welcome to write me off list if absolutely any help is needed

Take care.

The pop-up window which appeared after the windows update fooled me into
thinking that either Win10 had not really been correctly downloaded or that
this download was for the updated Win10, so therefore I needed it. I went
into the systray Win10 icon, but could not see the message that Win10 was

called the accessibility desk to uninstall and hide this update. I don't
plan on installing till early spring when I will have more time. I hope no

[JAWS-Users] If you're not ready for Win10, beware of Windows Update

2015-12-03 Thread Don & Cher
A windows update which came down yesterday afternoon, installed Win10
without my permission. The automatic update brought up a screen about
downloading Win10. MS had downloaded Win10 months ago, but this screen made
me question what I knew. There were 2 options- "download and upgrade" and
"download but do not upgrade". I selected the last option- thinking that
either I had been mistaken about Win10 already being fully downloaded or
that the major updates to Win10 required a new download of Win10.

However, after the download, I started seeing a 'preparing to install'
message and this morning was presented with a license accept screen. I
called the accessibility desk to uninstall and hide this update. I don't
plan on installing till early spring when I will have more time. I hope no
one else will get caught unprepared as I did last night ;)

Yes, I am attempting to open iTunes with a different library. So I am holding
down the shift key, as I open iTunes, to choose my library. When I try to
select the library, it won’t open. Even when it asks for the name of the
library, I type it exactly as it appears, and still no go.

Okay, I already have an iTunes library created with media already in it.
And I am trying to choose it with jaws, but whenever I select it, and even
put the exact name of the library in the box, it says library not found.
What is the secret to choosing my iTunes library?

I notice everyone's situation is different when it comes to upgrading to
Windows 10 so its best you do your homework before taking the plunge.

My all-in one printer is 4 years old so got to find out if there's a Windows
10 driver available. I would hate to upgrade only to find out I have to go
out and purchase a new one.

Also using Open Book 9.0. Is that compatible with windows 10? How about
Microsoft Office 2007? These are my issues that is holding me back from
upgrading to Windows 10.

I can offer an example. In iTunes, new playlists created with iTunes 12.2.1
or later versions require drag and drop to re-arrange the order of the list.
(Old playlists created before 12.2.1 are not affected.). Since the JAWS
cursor sees nothing but blanks and graphics, I don't know of any way to work
with these new playlists using drag and drop as Apple suggests. Here is my
correspondence with Apple (read to the end). I copied FS support re this but

RE: Broken playlist accessibility in iTunes; Follow-up: 629039632
Hello,
Thank you for your reply. The Playlist items may be arranged via drag and
drop action. If JAWS has a drag and drop function, we recommend trying that
as a way to rearrange playlists.

These problems refer to keyboard accessibility issues in playlists and were
created in iTunes 12.2.1 and continue in 12.3:

*Selection:
Within playlists created with these iTunes versions, selection no longer
seems to follow the cursor keys- so standard windows keyboard commands for
cut or copy result in a "nothing selected" error message. It is impossible
to re-arrange the order of songs created under these versions of iTunes. The
only playlists which are still functional are those which were created in
prior versions of iTunes.

*Navigation:
Using the arrow keys, after arrowing up or down for 15 or so lines, the
selection focus is lost. You cannot read the information or proceed further
in that direction without first arrowing backward one line- which then
allows you to move forward one more line- thus advancing only one line at a
time (backwards then forwards) in a see-saw fashion. The cursor actually
does move but the focus seems to be lost and the new song information is not
read.
Using the home or end key moves the cursor to the end or beginning of the
playlist; but JAWS does not read the information on that line. It is
necessary to arrow away from that song and back before the information can
be read.
Similarly, the page up and page down keys will not read the information for
the song on which the cursor lands.

*Nuisance artwork:
With these iTunes versions, artwork appears on each line of the playlist.
Even copying the songs from an old playlist without artwork into a new one
created under these versions produces a playlist with the artwork icons.

* iTunes becoming unresponsive:
Accidental use of the standard windows command Control-Home results in
iTunes freezing. This command is so commonly used for various purposes by
keyboard users that this is bothersome.

This is my previous message to you re these issues:

He verified that it is not a JAWS issue as he did not have JAWS installed,
and could not perform these functions either. I can still use all these
keyboard commands within playlists created prior to installing the new
iTunes- but even if I duplicate an old playlist and rename it (so I can have
a editable playlist) the newly duplicated playlist is non-editable-
apparently because it was duplicated under the new iTunes. The only way I
can add songs to one of these new playlists is by using 'add to playlist' on
the context menu- and the order of songs is unchangeable by this method-
I.E. the order you add the songs is unchangeable after the fact. So,
basically playlists are not very useful.

Well, this sure has been one all day ordeal to say the least!

However, perseverance has paid off. I have finally got that update to show
in the system's tray, and I have finally reserved my free copy with email
confirmation whenever it's my turn in the cue to have it,lol

I think that why so many of us do not see that in the system's tray is,
there's a certain item in window's update through the settings that has to
be checked in order for this to show.
Once I checked that box to show notifications it was on the taskbar and in
system's tray.

So I hope this will help someone who is still interested in getting their
free window's 10 download. If I just did it, then obviously, it's still
available to be obtained/reserved.

I'm not going to install it as of yet. I want to wait at least till I know
more about especially email clients that are able to run with it, and give
FS time to get new Jaws out that will work better for it, I am in no hurry.

1. Open preferences from the Google page.

You will be on the search settings tab. The list will look kind of like
this:

Search Settings

Search results
Languages
Location
Help

SafeSearch filters
SafeSearch
can help you block inappropriate or explicit images from your Google Search
results. The SafeSearch filter isn't 100% accurate, but it helps you avoid
most violent and adult content.
Turn on SafeSearch.
Turn on SafeSearch.
Lock SafeSearch

Google Instant predictions
When should we show you
results as you type?
Only when my computer is fast enough.
Always show Instant results.
Never show Instant results.

Results per page
50

Where results open
Open each selected result in a new browser window.
Open each selected result in a new browser window.

Search history
When signed in, you can receive more relevant results and recommendations
based on your search activity. You can turn off or edit your search history
at any time.
Save
Cancel

2. Below the search settings you will see other tabs that you don't want
right now: i.e. Search results, Languages, Location, Help.

3. The first thing is Safe Filter results which you can check if you don't
want explicit or violent sites.

4. The next thing is instant predictions. Here, to turn them off, you want
the third radio button.

5. If you want to change the results per pade, you can do so with the
slider. It is a bit challenging to adjust with a screen reader, but it can
be managed.

Finally, when you have things set up the way you want, click the Save
button.

Take my advice, I don't use it anyway.

You are not the only one experiencing this issue. Google users on other
lists have also reported this error. Apparently, Google is no longer
supporting the accessible search site, so you may want to consider
adifferent search enginelike startpage.com:

searches, is it gone now?

I'm not having as good luck with the regular google search site. After
I enter a search item and tap the search button, jaws doesn't say

Try clicking on Check for Updates in Windows Update and see if something
doesn't appear where the Important and Optional updates usually are found.
It will tell you to check the system tray for the icon, and it will now be
there. click on the icon in the system tray and follow the prompts to
register ofr the upgrade.

I read that you can also go to www.windows.com/getwindows10.com, and
register for the upgrade there.

Yes, go to the iTunes store, press control-F and tab to where there is a
checkbox for the iTunes store and check it. Then press control-F again and
type in what you are looking for, press Enter. You can navigate the results

buying the item, press control-1 to select music, then tab through the

I spent two days, well, let's be honest, five days of non-stop learning, and
I only learned two things so far lol.

How to add just one song and how to sync apps I have in itunes over to my
phone. Yes, there is still lots more I should learn but good start so far.

Tying it back to jaws, since I don't remember any version before this one, I
will say so far it's working well for me.

May I ask a question? Can I search for a rington or a song, etc via itunes,
or do I need to use the app store, download it there and then sync it, which
wouldn't make sense.

I guess using itunes, instead of using the app store, can I just do it
through itunes, if so, how?

I remember the itunes keystrokes briefly that someone posted a while back,
CTRL 1 etc, but I no longer have them notes.

So, to answer my own question, would I need to go to the itune store? If so,
how do I get there is it CTRL 2? Jaws doesn't say nothing for me, when
pressing CTRL 2.

well. From what I remember when the list helped me, the issue has to do with
Full Screen Mode or something like it. The key command to fix this is either

Are you using 16? Windows Update recently sent us an incremental upgrade on
IE 10, and it's as glitchy as all get out. The JAWS cursor is finicky on
our major Internet apps, and I had three IE crashes yesterday. I am proud
to report that JAWS stayed up through all three (something that hasn't
happened in a long time. It crashed unilaterally twice, but recovered both
times with no intervention from me. Understand that we here have what I
lovingly call the software setup from Hell, so if 16 can stand up to what we
dish out, it's good.

Hi,

JAWS and IE11 both crash a lot when I am using IE especially when I have
lots of tabs open at the same time. Is JAWS making IE crash more? I get
multiple crashes throguhout the day. Sometimes I can restart IE and carry on
what I'm doing, but other times JAWS crashes as well and I can't get it to
restart without restarting the PC. My computer fan also starts wirring at a
higher speed when this happens.

Sorry about that, it was some kind of fluke- perhaps with JAWS. I was using

About a month ago, Mike B. posted how he used the JAWS Settings Center
to suppress JAWS reading of HTML code which appears on some web pages.

I experience the code in some newspaper and magazine articles -
Washington Post and NY Review Of Books for two.

I recall one fix, but I think there were two settings Mike changed.
Encountering the code on NYBooks.com I set JAWS to ignore inline
frames. Voila - no more code. But on another site, www.valuewalk.com,
the inline frames are used for content. So I reversed the setting. Am I
doomed to a life of toggling back and forth between the Settings Center
and my copy?

Am I missing another part of the fix?

Tks.

drop box with a list of libraries in the list. when I hit the letter a to

different library. So what happens is that as soon as I hit the a the focus
is move to the library number. The web site automatically move the focus to
the library number as soon as a library name is chosen. This drop box does
not allow me to arrow down the drop box to select my library. As soon as I
try to arrow down it chooses the first library in the list and then move the
focus to the library number field. So my question is how do I keep or use
JAWS to select the correct library in this drop down box?

Thanks in advance

I am really frustrated with the ATT website. My email is downloaded to
Outlook just fine. The spam folder at ATT, however, is another story.

I spent about a half hour trying to have 30 messages from the jaws users
list marked as not spam. I finally gave up and had my husband mouse it.
The only time I was hacked it was through the contacts at ATT so I really
don't want to have anything in that contact list.

There are checkboxes to mark specific emails. Every time I either spacebar
or enter on the checkbox for a specific email, I get checked, not checked!
It used to allow for control+a to mark all but, apparently, that's gone.
The jaws cursor doesn't help as if I turn that on, I get nothing in the way
of speech.

Has anyone who has an email address through ATT like my SBCGlobal, figured
out how to manage that website? I can't find a feedback or contact the
webmaster and neither can my husband using the mouse.
I can't send you a link as you wouldn't have a username and password. ARGH!
Thanks if anyone has ideas. Karen

Hi Robert,

I just tried this with FF 29.0 to make sure it works with your problem as
well. Following the steps also allow you to use the Jaws cursor if it's
needed at some point:
You can use the JAWS Cursor navigate with arrow keys in Firefox after
turning off Firefox's hardware acceleration setting.
1. In Firefox, press ALT+T to open the Tools Menu and then choose Options.
2. From the Advanced options, choose the General tab.
3. Press TAB to move to the Use Hardware Acceleration when Available
checkbox. Press the SPACEBAR to clear it, then press ENTER to close the
dialog box.
4. Close reopen Firefox.
HTH
Take care.

page? The version of firefox I have is 300.0

Re: [JAWS-Users] the program roll back and jaws.

2014-06-28 Thread Don Cher
I still own it but it is not installed on my Win7 system. You have to turn
off the automatic snapshots and control them manually or it can take a while
to boot. I didn't like that because it comes up during windows start-up-
delaying the launch of JAWS. I had problems with my computer- hard drive
failure, mother-board replacement software, and a couple of guys who
worked on it thought RB might be part of the problem. I'm frankly not sure,
but if you decide to buy, write me back as I'd like to see someone benefit

Hello,

When I try using the JAWS cursor to investigate what else might be on the
screen outside or around the current window in focus, almost all of the
content which is there, and being read by the PC cursor, is blocked. At the
top (or at least, the limit of Up Arrow) is something that says Marlett
61490, and at the bottom limit of Down Arrow, Marlett 61557. One or the
other of these Marletts has appeared sporadically for years, but it's a
new thing to have them both, and they are now blocking much more of the
screen content than they used to. Also: this seems to be tied to my use of
JAWS in general, since they are there no matter what I'm using it
for-e-mail, browsing, writing documents, etc.-and they were there when I
unloaded and reloaded JAWS to see if that would get rid of them. Sighted
observers can't seem to see them. I got them deleted once years ago with the
help of Freedom Scientific and a very detailed series of about 10 steps
(which, of course, I should have noted and saved.) I have three related
questions: Has anyone else ever encountered these things; what is causing or
generating them; and is there a way not just to remove them now, but to keep
them from recurring? I'd really appreciate any hekp you folks can give me.

Hi Cher,

What I'm referring to is, for example, I have a windows update shortcut on
the desktop when I click on it I'm in the windows update window, using
my current screen resolution settings, I route the Jaws to the PC cursor,
press page-up to go to the top of the page, arrow down 1 line at a time,
Jaws will report that windows is up to date arrowing down a little more
Jaws reports that there are no updates available. Jaws doesn't report this
using other screen resolution settings, speaking for my system only.

Let me preface my next example by saying, I haven't been to system restore
in awhile, my Win7 system isn't availble to me at the moment , I don't
recall if finding this checkbox is ,with or without the use of routing the
Jaws to PC cursor.
Another scenario: In system restore, using my current screen resolution
settings, I can find the, Choose a different restore point radio button not
checked, checkbox but, using other screen resolution settings I couldn't.
Again, speaking for my experiences with my system only.

Hi Greg,
Starting with Windows 7, there is no recommended display resolution for
Jaws,per-say,
Many use 1024 by 768, but it will vary from system to system.
I have found that on many systems Jaws seems to work fine with what the
system chooses as the default
based on the hardware and software installed.
Sometimes you can adjust the display for better performance which may be
good for some programs,
but not others, so you usually end up with looking for a happy medium.

Hi Cher,

I don't recall if this setting was discussed so, if it was I apologize.

1. After opening Adobe from your desktop or start menu shortcut, go into
preferences with control-k. JAWS lands on an item in a tree view.
If you have been here before, it will be the item you last opened. Arrow
down or, use first letter navigation to get to, Security Enhanced. Note that

this is the item below Security.
Then uncheck these 2 options, the 2nd option is not necessary to uncheck
but, optional:
Enable Protected Mode at startup, needs to be unchecked.
Enable Enhanced Security, does not need to be unchecked. Now, tab to, Okay,

press enter to save your change close Adobe preferences.
Note. When making changes in the Security Enhanced section, you will be told
that Adobe needs to be restarted.

Take care.

nabigating with the Jaws cursor worked, was a definite factor. HTH

Hi Greg,

As Rick said, sometimes it takes some playing around with the screen
resolution to come to a happy medium I.e, On my Win7 Pro desktop system, I
played around quite with it finally settled on a screen resolution of,
1360 × 768, with the orientation set on, Landscape, for my happy medium.
HTH
Take care.

Hi Greg,
Starting with Windows 7, there is no recommended display resolution for
Jaws,per-say,
Many use 1024 by 768, but it will vary from system to system.
I have found that on many systems Jaws seems to work fine with what the
system chooses as the default
based on the hardware and software installed.
Sometimes you can adjust the display for better performance which may be
good for some programs,
but not others, so you usually end up with looking for a happy medium.

Hi Cher,
Those particular settings on a laptop are aimed mostly at conserving battery
power, how much wear and tear they save on hardware is arguable.
If you set everything to never just realize that if you are running on
battery, and not at the computer, there is no real conservation of power You
can extend the battery life somewhat by removing it while running on AC.
Note: this may not work on all laptops.
I have everything set to never on all of my machines, because I don't want
to experience unexpected behavior because I forgot about a minor setting.

Dear Amber- Pretty sure there are none- but encourage you to write their

more difficult to manage with each new version. The good thing is that once

So true, I've been using it for a number of years already myself and it's a
nice little deal. Personally my favorite version is 3.35 because once you
configure the jobs the way you want them simply copy out the settings.txt
file so if you ever need to re-install the program or anything like that
just paste that file back in it's program directory and your jobs are all
back just the way you want them to be.

Using Karen's Replicator, you can setup a series of jobs to copy all of
your data files to a backup location, such as a flash drive or external HD.
Whenever you want to backup your data, you attach the backup device to your
computer and run the predefined jobs. That's it. By default, KR only copies
those files which have changed since the last time it was run. This makes
the backup process lightning fast.

By comparison, if you are manually copying files, you may forget to copy the
contents of a particular folder. Using KR is a very clean and relatively
simple method for maintaining a backup of data files. It is not the tool to
use for making a backup of your entire computer. That job is best left to a
program such as Image for Windows or other imaging software.

John, that is very interesting. I read great reviews about Rollback RX and
one list member highly recommended it. At present though, you can only
 store
the snapshots on your C: drive- not what I had understood when I purchased
it. I already bought Image for Windows but only used it once when I saw
 how
much disk shuffling was involved. I'm looking at external hard drives- but

 I
do have a second internal drive for storage- which should be of some help.
Does Karen's Replicator have advantages over just copying files manually?

From what I have read, Rollback RX is not a data backup solution.
Essentially, it is an enhanced version of the system restore function
 which
is built into Windows. Data backup implies that your data is being stored
 on

media which is separate from your computers internal hard drive. You are
only kidding yourself if you believe that Rollback RX is backing up your
 data.
You don't have to purchase a copy of Image for Windows. You can use a

 for

Windows to create images of my entire computer on a monthly basis and
Karen's Replicator to backup my data files on a weekly basis. If I am
working a project where I am spending a lot of time editing files, I
 backup
those files daily by copying them into a DropBox folder. The question you
have to ask yourself is how much time are you willing to spend to recreate
lost files--if they can be recreated at all.

Yes, Bharat. I was not connected to internet during the first install
effort, and I did get an error message which said three files could not be
installed- and JFW did not work at all- not even a little bit. I wanted to
wait to connect to the internet until I had JFW and anti-virus installed
first. The error message sounded like it was referring to the same files you
mentioned- but since all I had was Narrator to speak what was happening, I
did not get the spelling of the file names.

I have trained many students on JAWS and probably installed it hundreds of
times- and this error was totally new in my experience.

 Hi all,

recently, which is today, i decided to install the latest update of JAWS
14.6004. Strangely, the update hadn't been reflecting in y automatic or
manual check for updates, so i had to manually download the same.

after i downloaded it tried to install it, the installer started
downloading something. I virtualised the window got the below message:

Downloading vcredist2005_x86 it then installed the software. my
question is, why did it have to download this component. wht would
have happened if i weren't connected to the internet. would the
 installation have failed?

Please suggest if anyone of you also faced this issue the probable fix
 for avoiding this in future.

I must mention here that, i am not really facing any issue but am just
wondering, why JAWS would have needed to download this component
probablly more, since all i was doing was installing an update.

 thank you,

 bharat.

You should have looked at David's tutorial on Image for Windows. You can
back things up to an external disk; you may need help when you have to
re-install the image but it means you wouldn't need a pile of DVD's.

As far as Rollback Rx, it appears to me to be a very nice system recovery
product. But, I'm not sure it backs up all your data, it could, but I
 didn't think it does.

Guess I have just learned that sad fact the hard way- have never
 experienced
a hard drive problem during nearly 30 years of working with computers.
 The
hard drive was sent back for replacement- and the vendor wanted $600 to
 $800
 to retrieve data.

I have a second internal HD which was a couple of years old, but had not
gotten around to figuring out whether Rollback RX could back up to 2
different drives or not. The new computer's OS was also new to me, so was
still trying to get everything installed and figure out what back-up
 option
to use. I had used Image for Windows but thought that the shuffling of
several disks was rather unwieldy; so was now trying out and getting used
 to
Rollback RX and not getting very helpful responses back from their tech
 support.

If your data is important to you, you must maintain at least three copies
 of
your data on at least two different types of storage media and in at
 least
 two separate locations.

 For example,
Let's assume that your data files located on your computers internal hard
drive are one copy stored in one location.
Next, you purchase an external hard drive, backup your data (or your
 entire
computer) to the external drive and store the drive at a friend or family
members home. Now you have two copies stored in two separate locations.
Next, you setup a cloud storage account and store a copy of your data at
 the
 cloud service

If your data is important, this scenario is the minimum starting point. For
my data, I use the above scenario, plus I alternate my data backups between
two external hard drives. I also copy the latest backup to two separate
flash drives and one of those flash drives is always with me.

You never trust your data to a single hard drive, no matter how new or old
it is. I have seen hard drives fail in one week and I have seen hard drives
run continuously for more than 10 years.

If the data on your failed drive is very important to you, email me off list
and I will put you in touch with a data recovery service with very
reasonable prices.

 Dear List,

Just lost all recent data due to the failure of a 4 month old hard drive.
Had Rollback RX installed (and thought my data was protected) but the
technician said he could not locate the files- and the hard drive was
 turning extremely slowly.

Needing advice on whether to get an external hard drive or to check out
cloud backup options. Some hard drives seem to have backup software built
into them, but I'm skeptical about the accessibility of such programs. I'm
also looking at what Seagate calls expansion hard drives- which may not
have the backup software built into them- am still trying to figure that
 one
out. Would appreciate your experience and advice.
