Re: [JAWS-Users] [Bulk] Re: can someone post how to repair jaws please?
Had to do this last week, and FS just had me type jfw17/type repair Cher -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Mike B Sent: Sunday, December 06, 2015 2:19 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [Bulk] Re: [JAWS-Users] can someone post how to repair jaws please? Hi Joanne, Here you go: The steps below are the best, most in depth, and most thorough way of repairing Jaws according to Freedom Scientific Tech Support. Note; jaws11 is the example, however, this will work for 12, 13, 14, & 15 as well. 1. Place a copy of the Jaws executible version that you want to repair into the main root of the " C " drive. For example; If you are running Jaws11 most recent you would paste a copy of " J11.0.1430-32bit.exe " into the main root of the " C " drive. To open the main root of the " C " drive, go to the desktop, press enter on My Computer, press enter on Local disk C, and now you have the main root of the " C " drive open. 2. With the Jaws " .exe " pasted into the "C" drive, highlight the " .exe ", and press F2 as if you were going to edit this line of text. now press control + C to copy this Jaws executible, press escape to close the edit field, and press Alt + F4 to close the C drive. What you want to do is place just the title of the Jaws version into the Windows Run Dialogue box and not the file. If you were to place the Jaws executible into the Run box without copying as you did as per the instructions above you would have pasted the whole file into the Run Box instead of just the title. 3. Now that you have just the title copied to the clipboard, press Windows key + R to open the Run Dialogue Box. Type, remember to type a capitalC ," C:\ " without the quotes or spaces and press control + V to paste the Jaws title, press your end key to take the cursor to the end of the title and type in the following " /type repair" without the quotes but, with the spaces . Below is what your line of text should look / read like. C:\J11.0.1447-32bit.exe /type repair Read character by character to make sure you have put in the proper spaces, Forward & back slashes and text. press the home key to go to the front of the title and press enter to start the repair. A 2nd way to do the same thing. From: Brian Lee You might have already resolved the problem, but if not here is a link that you can use to download the newest update for your 64-bit installation of JAWS. Information about performing the repair is shown below after the download link. ftp://ftp.freedomscientific.com/users/hj/private/WebFiles/JAWS/J11.0.1430-64 bit.exe After downloading the file you can do the following steps to repair the installation: 1. Use Windows key with R to bring up the run dialog box. 2. Use tab key to the browse button and press spacebar. 3. Browse to the downloaded JAWS setup file and press enter key. 4. Use tab key to move to where JAWS says "open colon edit combo", press the end key and then press spacebar. 5. Type in /Type repair, (that is first type a slash followed immediately by the word type then a space and then the word repair. 6. Use tab key to the OK button and press enter key. 7. Follow the prompts. Take care. Brian Lee 3rd way: From: Joseph FreeTech If you want a step-by-step try this... To run a repair locate the installer for the version of JAWS you are currently using. Be absolutely certain the version of jaws you are running and it's installer are identical. JAWS 16.x.y.z must match with JAWS 16.x.y.z. Press Shift+F10 or Windows applications key then down arrow to the following entry and press enter: run as administrator. Note: you may have to enter your admin password, and you may have to press Alt+Y to bypass UAC. The installation will begin. Note: JAWS will probably revert back to it's default speed and language as if you were installing JAWS for the first time. After a few clicks during the initial loading process, you will be asked what type of installation you would like to complete. Tab through this dialogue and choose the following: repair Note: this dialogue might show a combo box, which means you should use your up or down arrows to choose the repair option. Tab to "next" and press enter. The repair will begin and you will hear clicks implying JAWS is doing it's thing. If you need to repeat what was spoken, press Insert+B to read the entire screen once again. Please let me know if this helps, or if you need more info. Joseph the free tech guy! Re: [JAWS-Users] [Bulk] if you are not ready for windows 10 beware of windows update
The pop-up window which appeared after the windows update fooled me into thinking that either Win10 had not really been correctly downloaded or that this download was for the updated Win10, so therefore I needed it. I went into the systray Win10 icon, but could not see the message that Win10 was downloaded- which I found when Win10 was automatically downloaded by Microsoft. The bad thing was that apparently no matter which option you choose, if you agree to download, Win10 will start installing immediately when the download completes. If you have any of the older playlists- you can add the songs to a new uneditable playlist, then use the old empty one for arranging new playlists. That's the only way I'm getting by right now. I can offer an example. In iTunes, new playlists created with iTunes 12.2.1 or later versions require drag and drop to re-arrange the order of the list. It is impossible to re-arrange the order of songs created under these versions of iTunes. The only playlists which are still functional are those which were created in prior versions of iTunes. *Navigation: Using the arrow keys, after arrowing up or down for 15 or so lines, the selection focus is lost. You cannot read the information or proceed further in that direction without first arrowing backward one line- which then allows you to move forward one more line- thus advancing only one line at a time (backwards then forwards) in a see-saw fashion. The cursor actually does move but the focus seems to be lost and the new song information is not read. Using the home or end key moves the cursor to the end or beginning of the playlist; but JAWS does not read the information on that line. It is necessary to arrow away from that song and back before the information can be read. Similarly, the page up and page down keys will not read the information for the song on which the cursor lands. *Nuisance artwork: With these iTunes versions, artwork appears on each line of the playlist. I phoned Apple Accessibility recently to see if the tech could replicate my problem. He verified that it is not a JAWS issue as he did not have JAWS installed, and could not perform these functions either. I can still use all these keyboard commands within playlists created prior to installing the new iTunes- but even if I duplicate an old playlist and rename it (so I can have a editable playlist) the newly duplicated playlist is non-editable- apparently because it was duplicated under the new iTunes. The only way I can add songs to one of these new playlists is by using 'add to playlist' on the context menu- and the order of songs is unchangeable by this method- I.E. the order you add the songs is unchangeable after the fact. [JAWS-Users] Answer to RE: [Bulk] Re: Win10 download notification- what does it look like, where does it appear?
OK, in the 'Get Windows10' app, I could not find anything new because I kept re-checking the status menu item, because I had already reserved. But, what I was looking for is instead again back under the 'get windows 10' menu in the app. Here is what it will say: Your free Windows 10 upgrade is here! However, perseverance has paid off. I have finally got that update to show in the system's tray, and I have finally reserved my free copy with email confirmation whenever it's my turn in the cue to have it,lol I think that why so many of us do not see that in the system's tray is, there's a certain item in window's update through the settings that has to be checked in order for this to show. Once I checked that box to show notifications it was on the taskbar and in system's tray. So I hope this will help someone who is still interested in getting their free window's 10 download. If I just did it, then obviously, it's still available to be obtained/reserved. I'm not going to install it as of yet. I want to wait at least till I know more about especially email clients that are able to run with it, and give FS time to get new Jaws out that will work better for it, I am in no hurry. Re: [JAWS-Users] [Bulk] Re: [Bulk] Re: [Bulk] Re: Accessible Google Search
There wasn't anything called 'Preferences' on my standard Google page, but the things you described were revealed under a 'Settings Button'. The weird thing was though, that I could not check the button to turn off Google Instant with either the keyboard or mouse simulation. I've done the 'click here to turn off Google Instant' a million times, but it always came back up the next time I opened the page- so am clueless as to what the inability to select that radio button could signify. The SafeSearch filter isn't 100% accurate, but it helps you avoid most violent and adult content. Turn on SafeSearch. Turn on SafeSearch. Below the search settings you will see other tabs that you don't want right now: i.e. Search results, Languages, Location, Help. 3. The first thing is Safe Filter results which you can check if you don't want explicit or violent sites. 4. The next thing is instant predictions. Here, to turn them off, you want the third radio button. 5. If you want to change the results per pade, you can do so with the slider. It is a bit challenging to adjust with a screen reader, but it can be managed. Finally, when you have things set up the way you want, click the Save button. Take my advice, I don't use it anyway. Many lines are silent, but using a 'say line' or arrowing back up and down shows that text is really there. Anyone else? Re: [JAWS-Users] [Bulk] jaws and Itunes
Yes, go to the iTunes store, press control-F and tab to where there is a checkbox for the iTunes store and check it. Then press control-F again and type in what you are looking for, press Enter. You can navigate the results by H for heading until you locate the category you are looking for. After buying the item, press control-1 to select music, then tab through the checkboxes and check where you want to go next. How to add just one song and how to sync apps I have in itunes over to my phone. Yes, there is still lots more I should learn but good start so far. Tying it back to jaws, since I don't remember any version before this one, I will say so far it's working well for me. May I ask a question? Can I search for a rington or a song, etc via itunes, or do I need to use the app store, download it there and then sync it, which wouldn't make sense. I guess using itunes, instead of using the app store, can I just do it through itunes, if so, how? I remember the itunes keystrokes briefly that someone posted a while back, CTRL 1 etc, but I no longer have them notes. So, to answer my own question, would I need to go to the itune store? If so, how do I get there is it CTRL 2? Jaws doesn't say nothing for me, when pressing CTRL 2. Success is the result of perfection, hard work, learning from failure, loyalty and persistence. You have to hit more than just the install button, and the screen may show up in another window so that you have to alt-tab to move focus there. When I go to my libraries web site and go to where to log on the site there is a drop box with a list of libraries in the list. when I hit the letter a to take me to my library that begins with an A the first one that comes up is a different library. So what happens is that as soon as I hit the a the focus is move to the library number. The web site automatically move the focus to the library number as soon as a library name is chosen. This drop box does not allow me to arrow down the drop box to select my library. As soon as I try to arrow down it chooses the first library in the list and then move the focus to the library number field. So my question is how do I keep or use JAWS to select the correct library in this drop down box? Re: [JAWS-Users] ATT: impossible website with jaws
I have my ATT Yahoo downloaded into Outlook for all of those reasons. I could not possibly live long enough to deal with a web-based email program with the amount of mail I look at each day. Good luck :) Cher -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Karen Schrade Sent: Friday, July 11, 2014 1:57 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] ATT: impossible website with jaws I am really frustrated with the ATT website. My email is downloaded to Outlook just fine. The spam folder at ATT, however, is another story. I spent about a half hour trying to have 30 messages from the jaws users list marked as not spam. I finally gave up and had my husband mouse it. The only time I was hacked it was through the contacts at ATT so I really don't want to have anything in that contact list. There are checkboxes to mark specific emails. Every time I either spacebar or enter on the checkbox for a specific email, I get checked, not checked! It used to allow for control+a to mark all but, apparently, that's gone. The jaws cursor doesn't help as if I turn that on, I get nothing in the way of speech. Has anyone who has an email address through ATT like my SBCGlobal, figured out how to manage that website? I can't find a feedback or contact the webmaster and neither can my husband using the mouse. I can't send you a link as you wouldn't have a username and password. ARGH! Thanks if anyone has ideas. Re: [JAWS-Users] the program roll back and jaws.
I still own it but it is not installed on my Win7 system. You have to turn off the automatic snapshots and control them manually or it can take a while to boot. I didn't like that because it comes up during windows start-up- delaying the launch of JAWS. I had problems with my computer- hard drive failure, mother-board replacement software, and a couple of guys who worked on it thought RB might be part of the problem. At the top (or at least, the limit of Up Arrow) is something that says Marlett 61490, and at the bottom limit of Down Arrow, Marlett 61557. One or the other of these Marletts has appeared sporadically for years, but it's a new thing to have them both, and they are now blocking much more of the screen content than they used to. Also: this seems to be tied to my use of JAWS in general, since they are there no matter what I'm using it for-e-mail, browsing, writing documents, etc.-and they were there when I unloaded and reloaded JAWS to see if that would get rid of them. Sighted observers can't seem to see them. I got them deleted once years ago with the help of Freedom Scientific and a very detailed series of about 10 steps (which, of course, I should have noted and saved.) I have three related questions: Has anyone else ever encountered these things; what is causing or generating them; and is there a way not just to remove them now, but to keep them from recurring? Then uncheck these 2 options, the 2nd option is not necessary to uncheck but, optional: Enable Protected Mode at startup, needs to be unchecked. Enable Enhanced Security, does not need to be unchecked. Now, tab to, Okay, press enter to save your change close Adobe preferences. Note. When making changes in the Security Enhanced section, you will be told that Adobe needs to be restarted. Take care. Mike This email was sent from my, iBarstool. Re: [JAWS-Users] Adobe Reader XI and JFW
Mike- thanks, thanks, thanks. I appreciate very much that you read and understood the question. I had been skipping the set up assistant and doing the quick method because in the older Adobe versions that worked well. I did not know that they've hidden the open in browser option inside. I still don't understand what the browser settings under Preferences are supposed to do since they've changed the wording. I followed your directions and hope my problems will now be solved. Adobe XI has just been sitting there instead of automatically processing- seemingly waiting for someone to select the 'Start' button which is not in the tab order and not easily navigated to with JAWS. Dear Amber- Pretty sure there are none- but encourage you to write their technical support about accessibility. I have done this and they seemed somewhat interested. BitDefender is a great program, but it has become much more difficult to manage with each new version. Whenever you want to backup your data, you attach the backup device to your computer and run the predefined jobs. That's it. By default, KR only copies those files which have changed since the last time it was run. This makes the backup process lightning fast. By comparison, if you are manually copying files, you may forget to copy the contents of a particular folder. Using KR is a very clean and relatively simple method for maintaining a backup of data files. It is not the tool to use for making a backup of your entire computer. That job is best left to a program such as Image for Windows or other imaging software. Re: [JAWS-Users] Update to latest build of Jaws 14 strange issues
Yes, Bharat. I was not connected to internet during the first install effort, and I did get an error message which said three files could not be installed- and JFW did not work at all- not even a little bit. I wanted to wait to connect to the internet until I had JFW and anti-virus installed first. The error message sounded like it was referring to the same files you mentioned- but since all I had was Narrator to speak what was happening, I did not get the spelling of the file names. I have trained many students on JAWS and probably installed it hundreds of times- and this error was totally new in my experience. For my data, I use the above scenario, plus I alternate my data backups between two external hard drives. I also copy the latest backup to two separate flash drives and one of those flash drives is always with me. You never trust your data to a single hard drive, no matter how new or old it is. I have seen hard drives fail in one week and I have seen hard drives run continuously for more than 10 years. If the data on your failed drive is very important to you, email me off list and I will put you in touch with a data recovery service with very reasonable prices.
