Sure it's accessible with Jaws as it is just a dialog-based program.
It is free for both personal and commercial use.
I personally found it reliable when working with disk monitoring and
registry. It will even remove some cookies from your browser cache.

For maintenance purposes, you might also consider having a good firewall
program like Zone Alarm or WinPatrol. These will make sure that your
computer does not attract unnecessary attention from the network.
Also you may try the Sophos Rootkit Revealer to clean your PC of any
rootkits.

You can still have the firewall to protect that wireless network from
any attack. Anyway, you can worry about firewall when you are part of a
big network, for example when you connect your laptop wireless network
to the Internet or another network.
Most hardware hubs may provide some form of firewall, but an added layer
of security is always a bonus when dealing with a large-scale attack
such as computer hacking.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Winzip V14.5 and JAWS

2010-07-22 Thread Ishe Chinyoka

Hi,

I find Winrar great. I think one thing worth noting is that all these
compression utilities cannot be dismissed easily just as we do other
applications. I mean you can not use one utility at the exclusion of the
other: it is just a matter of knowing what kind of archives are you
comfortable working with, taking into account your cronies and contacts'
machines.

This is because Winrar is good in areas like creating RAR formats: this
cannot be done by any other utility. Of course, WinZip and 7zip plus a host
of other archivers can open RAR formats. So if you are interested in
creating RAR formats, Winrar is your application.

On the other hand, just like what Scorpio indicated, if you are interested
in creating ZIPX format (the new format supported by WinZip), no other
utility can do that. I cannot enumerate the advantages of Zipx over the
traditional Zip format, but suffice to state that I find this format more
secure and reliable. If you wish to store files for your own consumption
later, I urge you not to hesitate to invest in WinZip 14. The fact that you
may have cronies who are not yet up to the latest gear shouldn't hinder you
from investing in the latest app: just make sure to simply create a Zip
archive for those people who are not using the latest WinZip program.

So in short, it is a matter of preference: WinRar is my own personal
preference and I fell in love with it since version 2.xx and I never
regreted my decision: WinRar archives to me are compact and cannot be easily
cracked by brute force programs. Just my thoughts: but I encourage you to go
ahead and get WinZip 14 -- those ribbons are lovely and you will still be
used to them as you did with Office 2007.
If you can, simply get both utilities as they will be handy for different
situations.

Wish you all the best,

Cheers,

Ishe

Hi,
I once experienced frustration with Avast in the same way: but you can't
delete it from the Explorer.

Go to your Add/Remove programs in the Control Panel.
When you get the Avast item from the listbox, select Remove.

Now from this point on, Avast uses the logic that no sane person other than
a malware would choose to remove it. So it displays a countdown timer with
the question: Are you sure you would like to remove Avast? (n=30...)
Unfortunately, this message seems not to be accessible using JAWS in this
latest Avast edition, so you must use the JAWS cursor.
Place your cursor on the Yes part of it and simulate a left mouse button
click to dismiss the message before the end of 30 seconds. If you are slow,
it will tell you that uninstallation couldn't complete due to an error.

Right now I prefer Microsoft Essentials or Eset Nod32 which I find their
interfaces accesible.

Wish you the best.

Re: [JAWS-Users] LAPTOP KEYS WITH JAWS

2010-06-26 Thread Ishe Chinyoka
I think she refers that using this key behaves like JAWS key in most, but
not all cases. On my laptop, it will do so for instance pressing the
function key and the semicolon is like pressing the CAPSLOCK (acting as JAWS
key) to make a plus (or a PC cursor).

The function key helps to turn the right side of the laptop keyboard into
the numpad, the function that the Capslock working as the JAWS key does so.
However, pressing it with the F12 for time, I never tried that. I think you
will need to first assign this key in your global keymap file for that.

However, I find using the function key for other tasks easier such as
pressing it with the left arrow key to work as a HOME Key, with the right
arrow key to make an END key, with the down arrow to make a PAGE Down etc.

This is one of many situations where using the expression JAWS key

Re: [JAWS-Users] MESSAGE RULES

2010-06-24 Thread Ishe Chinyoka

Hi
Try this:
1. Go to Tools in OE.
2. Arrow to Message Rules, there is a submenu.
3. Select Mail, and press Enter.
4. The first box lists all the possible conditions: pick one that best fits
the mail to be affected. For instance, all mail from this list may be best
described as Where the To refers to Some People. Press a space bar to
highlight this condition.
5. Tab to the next group of actions: here the action refers to what OE must
do with the mail fitting the condition so chosen. From this, choose one
action, for example Move to the Folder.

6. Tab to the next field where you get a summary of your choices:
Use your arrow keys to the line that reads the condition: press the Enter
key while the cursor is on this line. An editable field would open where you
must enter an address of people to be addressed. If you are not sure of the
addresses, you can choose to get this info from your address book. Click OK.
Next, arrow to the line that highlights the action: while the cursor is on
this line, press the Enter key as you did with the condition. This time, OE
will open a folder list dialog where you have to pick one folder where those
mails must be moved to. If the folders do not reflect your mood or the way
you want to mirror the subject, you can tab to NEW... to create a new
folder, The highlight will be placed on your newly created folder. After
this press OK.

After this step that involves so much, tab to the last field.
7. This step is optional: you are asked to give your rule a name: you can
type in any sensible name that reflects the main content of the mails you
are moving to this folder, for example Blind computing for mails from this
list.

Then press OK.

From now on, all mails matching your conditions will be directed to this

folder.

Cheers,

Ishe

Hi

Press enter on that file in My Documents (the one you downloaded from the
web).

It will start installing.
Follow the guide on screen: for example, being asked whether you are sure
you want to install the voice.

After installation, JAWS wil tell you that you need to restart your system.
Do so.
When you restart, you will see your new voice as one of the listed
profiles.

2010-06-12 Thread Ishe Chinyoka
After download, navigate to the folder where you downloaded the file: press
enter to start the installation.
After install, unload Jaws (Usually Jaws will tell you that you installed a
new voice. It wil only be recognised after restarting JAWS).

Then start Jaws once again.
Go to Options Voices Voice adjustment ...

From the drop down list, you will see your new voice.

Make any changes or adjustments and click OK.
The voice will be active immediately.
However, you can choose to save this voice as another profile and load it
later by pressing JAWS+CTRL+S.

in addition to suggestions made by other listers, I think you can have a

It is, however, a shareware, but I think it is worth its salt. Have a look

Re: [JAWS-Users] Command Prompt

2010-06-08 Thread Ishe Chinyoka
You can choose to use the command prompt for such files even if they are not
in the system32 directory by changing the command prompt to the directory
where the program is located.
For example, if a program which you want to run is in C:\Program Files\Lame
directory, you can issue the command to go to that directory by typing CD or
chdir on the command prompt.

The simpler method, however, will be to add the directory to your Path
variable. This can be done by going to My Computer either on start menu or
on the desktop. Don't open My Computer, but press alt+Enter to open its
Properties sheet. Then navigate by control+tab to Advanced Tab.
Tab to Environment Variables button and press spacebar. Tab to System
Variables. Use your arrow key in a listbox that appears. Find the Path
variable and just add your directory by pressing either Home key then type
the full path to your directory, then a semicolon, or an End key and start
by typing the semicolon then your full path. and press OK.
Next time you want to run the program, you just type its file name and not
the whole path on the command prompt or from the run box.

Concerning the other issue of not finding the file you converted to MP3, I
think you need to first know where your program normally places its output
after conversion. Most programs will place the converted files in the same
directory as the source file. For example, if source.wav is in My Documents,
the resultant file called source.mp3 is likely placed in the same folder.
If you did a search for the file and failed to get it, it could mean that
the search was performed from a tree level lower than where the actual file
is. You could try doing a search on the whole drive instead. It takes time,
but the results are more reliable.
Or, I am afraid, the file might not have been converted. Still if you are
sure that the file was converted, you can try repeating the conversion
process. If the file is there, it would be overwritten, or a dialog will pop
up asking you if you wish to overwrite the file. You will then need to press
No, and another dialog will come up asking you for the new name. Just find
out which directory is being used to store converted files at this point.

I am afraid this is getting lengthy, but the bottom line is if you used a
GUI app to convert your program, you have no need of a command prompt box.
If you used a command line app to do the conversion, simply try capturing
its output in a text file to get a full verbose log of how the conversion
was done.

As an aside, there are other user-friendly applications for converting one
format to another -- and they use this Lame Encoder. well, this might be off
topic. But you are free to get or seek further particulars off list in case
there is problem with this hastily written message.

This is very clear, but one more question. So if I am trying to run a
program that is not in the root directory, even though I know the exact
path, I should still use the Command Prompt?

I'm trying to use Lame to change a .wav file to mp3. I don't need to do
any adjustment of the sound.
I thought I had it figured out, but I can't seem to find the mp3 that was
supposedly created. I use search to find it, but no joy.

Re: [JAWS-Users] booting in to safe mode

2010-06-07 Thread Ishe Chinyoka

Optionally, do the following:
1. from your Start menu, go to Run...
2. In the Run edit box, type msconfig (without quotes) to open the Windows
configuration manager.
3. When the Configuration manager appears, press control+tab to the Boot.ini
tab.

4. Arrow to /SAFEBOOT option and press spacebar to checkmark it.
5. After this press Okay for your computer to start in safe mode.

In safe mode, troubleshoot whatever prompted you to boot into safemode, for
example removing a troublesome spyware. After doing so, don't switch off
your computer but open the msconfig program and press control+Tab to go to
boot.ini tab. Press spacebar to remove the checkmark on /safeboot option and
press OK.

Your computer will then restart in normal mode.

Hope this helps a bit. Take care,

Eudora is no longer a maintained product. It has been absorbed into the

I highly urge you to migrate to something else that is an active

Eudora is too old, and is more susceptible to viruses, Trojan horses and
worms than any active email clients.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Memory stick

2010-05-19 Thread Ishe Chinyoka

What do you mean? is it RAM or space?

Well in the case of RAM, you need to know the type of RAM your Dell uses. If
it is a laptop, it may be using DDR1, but check with your manual first. Then
you can buy the extra RAM.

But you made reference to memory stick which makes me think that you are
also concerned with extra megs for your computer. In that case, any stick
compatible with your USB port will do. The amount of memory will depend with
your requirements: however, more is always better. The computer will always
require more room to breathe and speed to process its tasks.

Take care

I need to add memory.
How do I find what kind of memory stick (amount or type), to add or
replace?

Thank you.

Re: [JAWS-Users] terminology

2010-05-13 Thread Ishe Chinyoka
A split button is just a button with more than one option at a time; to get
to any of the options, you simply have to press the right arrow and you
would hear other nested items. You can decide to just activate the main menu
item without expanding the split button by pressing the return key.

Sure, Windows 7 changed the layout of some of its windows, especially with
the Folder Selection control. Instead of Folder View, List View, other
buttons you hear have to do with your preferences in arrangement of these
itmes. Some folks prefer to have documents listed alphabetically, from a
certain range to a certain range without necessarily showing all the
documents in the folder. So, for instance, if you know that you wish to open
an |Excel document that starts with D, you have to pick from the displayed
command buttons to let the arrangement be from A to H, etc.
However, you can turn this off if you feel that this distracts you.

As for me, to quickly get to a list of documents, I just use the Shift+Tab
instead: I only skip this set of command options and get to the list. While
here, you can continue to browse as in the classic XP style.

Hope this helps a little.

Cheers,

Ishe

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws Scanned Documents

2010-05-11 Thread Ishe Chinyoka
Yes JAWS can read PDF files provided that the computer the student is using
has got a program to handle the PDF files. She may not have Adobe Acrobat
Reader installed on her PC.

However, you can try converting those documents into plain text which can be
opened in any word-processing application such as Notepad or Microsoft Word.
However, the problem may be that the formatting may be lost in the process,
and if yours is a technical discipline, this then may compromise the
message. Otherwise, if you are not concerned with the aesthetics of the
document, plain text is good.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Jaws Scanned Documents

Hello,

Although I'm visually impaired, I don't use Jaws and am therefore not
familiar with its applications.

Does Jaws need/use a special application to read/transcribe scanned
documents into Braille?

I teach English in Paris and I want to send scanned documents to my
student.

I don't know if the problem is on my end or hers.

I've tried scanning the document into a PDF file. She said that Jaws
didn't

recognize it. I've also tried scanning the document into a TXT file. She
hasn't told me yet if Jaws could read it.

I have an OCR (OmniPage Pro) which I really don't know how to use, but I
scanned the document and sent it even though the result wasn't perfectly
correct. The file extension was OPD. She hasn't responded yet.

What file format do I need to scan my documents in, in order for Jaws to
read/transcribe it into Braille?

What program/application does Jaws need to read/transcribe it into
Braille?

I don't know which version of Jaws she has.

For PDF files, I use Adobe Reader 9.

Any guidance or insight you can provide will be extremely helpful.

Thanks,

Annie
