Re: [JAWS-Users] Blogs
Dear Keith, My profound sympathies, I wrote several times in the past to this list on this subject but for some reason I could never understand all my messages on the topic were ignored. Fortunately there is another list with much more helpful members, ... it isn't specifically for those of us who use Jaws but it is for the blind and many people on it have blogs and are happy to share. Try subscribing to: blindwebb...@yahoogroups.com As far as blogging goes, I tried and gave up, my personal experience has been that the free services (like wordpress.com) don't play well with Jaws, but I hear the paid ones (like wordpress.org) do. I now co-author one which solved the technical issues but isn't my favourite solution. Good luck, Sincerely, Joy For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS sighted assistance
Been there do that too! I often work with a sighted computer technician and that is beyond frustrating since I am having things that aren't directly related to my problem and/or that I understand just fine explained to me because that is the part of the screen he is looking at! One thing I have noticed is that Jaws is usually lower down on the page then the mouse cursor, ... but still that doesn't always bridge the gap. If anyone has found a solution I can't wait to hear it because it seriously stops me asking for help on occasion, ... times you just can't take the hassle! Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS sighted assistance
I have had that selection checked in the last several versions of Jaws and it never helped me or Anyone sighted who attempted to assist me. I don't know what it thinks it is tracking but far as I can tell the PC cursor isn't involved. I agree that the fastest easiest way to get something done is to unload Jaws, unfortunately if it is something you need to do repeatedly and preferably on your own that isn't a lot of help. And for those of us who don't live with someone sighted not being able to work out what is going on is a real problem. [JAWS-Users] Mac Preview /Adobe/Jaws Problems?
Good day, Has any one else run into problems opening an adobe file that was saved using Mac Preview? I'm running Windows XP and Jaws eleven, and when I opened a file saved using that software I either got: all text shown together as one word, one line, no spaces. Or, (if I selected read document left to right top to bottom) one word one line. The file could not be converted on another computer that is not running Jaws. Re: [JAWS-Users] Mac Preview /Adobe/Jaws Problems?
Dear Flor, We did try saving as a print file, in a couple of different ways and with at least one other programme in addition to Adobe. (I handed that bit over to a technician so I don't have the details.) The Adobe produced the no spaces version, and that on the machine not running Jaws. The other software did work in one sense, it produced words and lines, but unfortunately the original document is formatted in two columns and they were merged with horrible consequences to the sense and usefulness of the document. I did try raw stream, it produced exactly the same effect as left to right, top to bottom, one word one line. I don't know if an OCR approach was tried on the other machine (I'll check, thank you), I didn't, and I don't have a good OCR programme, or not one that saves to text anyway. Thanks for the thoughts, ... any other spring to mind? Joy For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

Thanks Flor, those are some interesting ideas. I think some of your suggestions were tried, but not the html converter, I'll definitely run through them and see what we can do. Re: [JAWS-Users] Trend Micro
Maria, I presume you meant that we should be making an effort to communicate the need for accessibility to ALL the manufacturers of anti-virus software? That was how I read your message. And I completely agree with the concept, although I have no idea how it could be worked on effectively. And I do not think the second person who responded to your note got the point of your suggestion at all. The first response had a certain validity, but while having FS involved would be helpful I don't think their being the source is the answer. But I completely agree that we should attempt to make a concerted group effort for basic vital core programmes that all systems need to be equipped with, like anti virus to be fully accessible to one or more of the top three screen reading softwares. If anyone has an idea of an effective means to begin that process I wish we could begin communicating with each other. [JAWS-Users] Making Anti-Viruses Accessible, Was Trend Micro
I think you were very clear Maria, just helps to emphasize the main points some times. I'd think it would mainly be an issue of labelling graphics, ... and for whatever reason most programmers seem to think that is a lot to ask! But I agree, it is definitely feasible, the problem is communicating the need, and in such a way that the concept is grasped that there is a significant customer base interested in these changes. That is why the group approach is key in my opinion. I often advocate for accessibility in a different area and one of my greatest problems is just that, getting the point across that I'm NOT the only blind person using these products, tat if they adapt not only will they have several happy customers but acquire many more when the word spreads! [JAWS-Users] Fw: Scanning and OCR Software
Bill I understand what you are saying but some of us simply won't use the majority of those tools, (for example other then the PDF converter I couldn't or would have no need to use the other tools you listed), so needs and end usage ought to be factored in. If that complex programme is going to sit there and not be used then what's the point. Personally I'd like to have a reliable OCR essentially to read the bills I don't get monthly in Braille. Five years ago I did want one for other things, but the kind of document I used to want to scan is increasingly available to me as text PDF downloads which is so much simpler and faster. (Also accuracy was a big issue in these documents, and since it was numeric there wasn't any real context in which to check errors.) So you see a thousand dollar sophisticated software package would be totally wasted on me. Just something to keep in mind when evaluating a programme and deciding which one to choose. Open Book, for instance, has a number of helpful tools build in to the interface which make some tasks easier. Examples include, the ability to do a down and dirty conversion to Braille for export or embossing, I use this feature frequently, the ability to turn any scanned document into an audio file for later use on a MP3 player or other such device, the ability to easily find and down load on-line books to read, the ability to use reading voices which are more pleasant than Eloquence, while switching back to eloquence when responsiveness is wanted, the ability to fax or photo copy any document scanned, and my favorite feature, the ability to convert graphic Adobe PDF or PowerPoint PPTX graphic to readable text by just printing the document from Adobe or PowerPoint to the Freedom Import Printer which automatically launches Open Book and converts then reads the document to you. It is expensive, but then so is JAWS. You can do many of these things using other software, but the combination of them would add up to quite a bit, where in Open Book it's all in one easy to use interface. In short, I respect the right of anyone here to choose the solutions they prefer, but I prefer and really like Open Book. [JAWS-Users] Urgent, After Long Term Use Jaws Refusing to Authorize
I'm running Jaws 11 on Windows XP, and haven't had a problem with it, until now. I had to disconnect my power supply this evening and when it was reconnected it wanted to be authorized. I followed the steps (tried every method more then once) and get a message about not having a licence. To put it mildly this is idiotic, I have a licence and key, it was running six hours ago as it had been for over a year. Anyone know what I can do? All the information Jaws is looking for Must already be on my hard drive! Because waiting until Monday to deal with Freedom Scientific is not a happy thought, ... having to restart the machine every forty minutes complicates life no end. Not to mention my power supply issue has not been resolved yet and every restart is a breath holding event. Thanks for any advice, Sincerely, Joy For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
Re: [JAWS-Users] Urgent, After Long Term Use Jaws Refusing to Authorize
Thanks Rick I did send in a request, like the rest of Freedom Scientific that won't help until business hours. Its lovely how we aren't supposed to experience any Jaws problems on the weekend. Joseph, I'd have said I turned it off if that is what I meant, I had the power supply disconnected and removed from the machine because it is experiencing problems. I/my tech is dealing with the basic computer issues, we were just rather taken aback when things were put together again (unfortunately temporarily) and Jaws pulled this out. I really do Not understand why disconnecting the mother board eats a key, ... and I'm really unimpressed. That said I had not used all three keys so this is adding insult to injury. Wouldn't be quite so bad if it hadn't happened on a Saturday. Anyway, thanks for the explanations. Re: [JAWS-Users] Urgent, After Long Term Use Jaws Refusing to Authorize
Thanks for explaining, ... I will not comment since I cannot possibly think of a remark at the moment that is not profoundly unflattering to Freedom Scientific, and their set up. I do wish they'd at least acknowledge people have problems (which they have set things up so ONLY they can solve) on weekends and in the evening, ... not to mention a toll free line. You can bet I'll be calling first thing tomorrow morning. Appreciate the offer but the tech who built this machine has replacing the power supply in hand so I'll let him get on with it. Re: [JAWS-Users] Urgent, After Long Term Use Jaws Refusing to Authorize
Tim, I am a hundred percent with you, and desperately wish I could let them pay! It truly adds insult to injury to have to pay the long distance charges. However, (least the last time I checked) they are not so kind as to offer a toll free number to Canadians. It really rubbed me the wrong way when the last time I spent about forty minutes playing tag with them and finally finding someone to help (he was really good) I found out that while I was racking up the U. S. long distance he was working a couple hours away from me in Toronto. No direct line there though. Joseph I'm with you, ... I won't repeat the rant I just gave to my poor long suffering tech (who's opinion of FS is equally unprintable, and I know, we are all supposed to pretend there a mag company on this list), but honestly there just can't be that many people out there who would want to pirate Jaws in the first place! Also they should make this stupidity of hard ware switches using up keys clear. When I was trained I was told you installed one on a machine, end of story. (Of course in those days you also got five not three.) I've told two techs to date both of whom had my ignorant reaction, but its already on the hard drive, why would disconnecting the power supply make a difference? Makes no sense! But then neither does a company with this many customers who doesn't offer tech support on the weekends! Even my tiny internet provider is open weekends, and they've got a staff of twenty, maybe. Well this has really mucked up my day/weekend, ... my apologies for the complaining, and thanks for the help in understanding what is happening. I can go to certain websites and Jaws locks application file for Jaws has encountered a problem and needs to close... I almost wish they could make a separate version for corrent OS and a different one for Win 8. I prefer Eloquence for its rapid speech so I don't get overly excited about the new expressive Vocalizer, although it does sound better; and my Windows 8 computer doesn't have touch screen capability since I upgraded two-year-old laptop. Re: [JAWS-Users] dragon natural speaking
I don't understand the part of your question about it working without a screen reader. As far as that goes its like any other piece of software if the person needs a screen reader then they'll need one with Dragon. If they are trying to run Dragon and Jaws then they need JSay, the Jaws interface programme. Since Dragon responds to verbal commands it hears its really pretty impossible to work it without an interface because it hears and tries to respond to Jaws. Hope your friend finds a system that works for them! Joy For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
Re: [JAWS-Users] dragon natural speaking
I'm no expert but I thought JSay was also made by Freedom Scientific? Since both Dragon and Jaws are popular programmes I'd be surprised if the interface wasn't still being produced. For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

[JAWS-Users] Font Indentification Question
Good Day. Is there a way to configure Jaws to indicate when it is reading a letter in a different font or font style from the one used to create the main document? I am using Jaws 11 and Word 2003. Alternately, is it possible for the Word find function to search for a specific font or font style? Thank you for any help. [JAWS-Users] WordPress.com and Jaws?
Good day, I'm looking for some help please! This is the free version, not WordPress.org which I believe makes a difference. Still I've read in the past that it is Jaws friendly so there's got to be something I'm not doing since so far its a Jaws bad dream. I'd like to post on my blog, I've got the basic blog set up but posting on it is a massive headache! I'm running Jaws 11. If anyone has suggestions I'd really appreciate them. [JAWS-Users] Jaws not Speaking in Combo Boxes
Good day, Just had to change to a new hard drive and since a copy (Ghost) of the old one wasn't possible everything needed to be re-installed and some things aren't working right. Jaws, version 11 is going silent when I put him in lists and combo boxes. Example, I wanted to send an attachment via email, and when I tried to select my folder in the look in combo box he doesn't say anything when I arrow up and down, and even asking to have the current line read doesn't let me hear a word. Any idea what is going on? I'm running Windows XP. I'd really appreciate any and all advice.
