Hi All,

The other day I called VFO / Freedom Scientific to see if they had any new
financial plans for people that had gotten way behind because of financial
difficulties, & wanted to get upgraded / updated to the latest version.
Well, to my surprise what I found out was absolutely fantastic! A friend
needed to be updated because he was at Jaws 11 & he needed to be upgraded
to

be compatible with the Windows 7 system he is moving to from XP. Okay to
cut this short, I found out people can be upgraded from Jaws 11 to
Jaws2018
for $200.00. The lady I talked to was a Window Eyes transplanted employee
&
she didn't know how long this financial plan had been in place. So for
all
you that need to be upgraded but have financial difficulty, don't be
afraid
to call & inquire about new financial / payment plans! This $200.00 plan
is

only for the Home versions.

First I really do not want to purchase a new machine at this time. The
problem that I have with my network drivers microsoft can not correct. The
computer is a 2009 machine running win 7 32 bit. The corrupted driver can
not be updated or reinstalled. the manufacturer no longer has a 32 bit
driver on their web site. One thing that I am not sure of is if I could use
my origional 32 bit windows install to run a repair and keep all of my files
and programs. If that would work I would go that way. Microsoft is willing
to create a product key and download the 64 bit os and install it on my
machine.I hate to go through the work to reinstall programs and try to
recover product keys and all emails on the new os. Now for me it would be
the same amount of work if I purchased a new desktop.

Do you have your insert key checked in your jaws user list?
It is under user?
1, insert 6
2, arrow down to user
3, right arrow
4, ctrl shift D
5, arrow down to insert key mode
6, check that box
And next time all you have to do is press the insert key, and let go, and
press the other keys.
The insert key is like you are holding it down.
Patti

Thank you, not easy to do with one hand, but managed it as a two job

Hi all,
I installed the new JAWS update 17.0.2211. One thing I noticed right away,
is that when you check your updates in Windows 10, it gives the information
about when updates were last checked for. For a while now, you had to turn
on the touch cursor and press the left arrow to get that information. So,
this is fixed and you can just tab to check for updates, and JAWS reads all
of that info to you like in JAWS 16. Also, JAWS works better in the start
area of Windows 10. When you do a search, JAWS tells you right away what is
being autopopulated below that you can enter on. These are two big changes
concerning win10 I noticed right away. Take care, all.

Hi

You only get notified automatically of an update when you start JAWS. So
JAWS 17.0.2211 must have posted since the last time you started JAWS. You
will be notified automatically the next time you start JAWS. Of course, you
can always go to the JAWS window or menu on your computer, open the Help
menu and activate the last entry which is check for updates to see if a JAWS
update is available. But experience says that you will learn about a new
JAWS update pretty quickly by reading this email list.

dongles running the home license are having the problem. He told me to have
people call and they will get fixed up most likely starting tomorrow.

A strange but certainly inconvenient problem with this update is that it
won't authorize on either of my systems running a hardware dongle. I have a

my towers both a 32 and 64 bit systems lost their license. I removed the

The October update updates the July update. As I understand it, using
the download links (the same as downloading from the FS site) downloads
a complete, updated version of JAWS (why it takes longer than the
patch), while the update you get when you respond to the "update is
available" FS notice, is an update patch atop your existing JAWS. If my
understanding is indeed true, then doing the entire download using the
links or the FS site is preferable to having a potential problem if your
patch does not graft properly.

I used the patch updates for years and they apparently worked fine, but
now I use the links or the FS site to download a fresh system (keeping
my setting intact).

I will be interested to see how this thread develops. I've resolved the
reading of row and column headers in Word and Adobe tables by
exporting/copying to Excel wherever I can - especially where there are
more than 5-6 columns, where my memory gets a bit stretched. Excel has a
great feature in the Quick Settings (Insert V) configurator (Titles)
that will allow user-defined row and column headers to be tagged so they
are read by the JAWS voice as I navigate from cell to sell, column to
column, row to row. Nice feature.

To turn off the preview pane in Outlook 2010, do the following:

Go to the View tab by pressing Alt V then the letter V. Tab over to
Other Settings and press the spacebar. Now tab until you reach the
radio buttons for how you want to handle the auto preview pane. Select
the button for no auto preview then tab to ok.

I think that will do what you want. This also applies to Outlook 2013.
One thing to be aware of, I think you have to do these steps for each
folder individually. I think there's a way to hide the preview pane
for all folders, but I can't remember how to do it.

I hope this helps.

A Ballast for My Soul

Life is like a stormy sea
That tosses to and fro,
But God's Word will ever be
A ballast for my soul.

By its truth I'll be held fast
Till I reach heaven's shore
Where I will be home at last
And sail life's sea no more!

Hi Carolyn,

I do believe that half of your statement is true, though I'm not sure if you
should quote me on that.

The Defragmentation service is true, as Windows 10 keeps your hard drive
defragged constantly so as to maximize the storage space and it's
information retrieval.

In terms of the Disk clean up, I don't believe this has been automated in
Windows 10, but as of Windows 8.1, disk clean up is still a manual task,
though, I suppose that you can automate it by setting it as a scheduled task
once a week, or so, but again, you can always set Internet Explorer to empty
temporary internet files automatically once you finish browsing. That has
always been in the Internet Explorer settings, but in terms of emptying out
your recycle bin, or cleaning up dump files and/or log files, those you must
do manually, since the computer can never know which ones you want to delete
and which ones you don't.

Like I said above though, I may be incorrect in this statement, to please
take it with a grain of salt, as I am not officially using Windows 10 yet,
as it has not been reported ready for my computer.

Good luck.

I understand that in 10 we do not have to do defrag or disk clean up? Is
that correct?I do not have a solid state hard drive, just a great big one, 1

Hi Dave,

There actually used to be a cheat sheet located in the advanced tab of the
system properties in Windows XP, but alas, they've done away with it, and I
don't know where to obtain it anymore.

This command was part of the list of commands that included the IP release
and renew commands for your internet, the check disk and disk defrag and
other useful utilities that were, and still are, as you can see, useful back
in the day.

In any case, perhaps someone with an XP computer can pull up the system
properties with Windows key+pause, then control Tab to the advanced tab, or,
at least, that's what I think it was called, and copy those commands down
for us.

Unfortunately, all of my computers are Windows 7 and up. LOL.

Hi, You can press Windows key+R to get the run dialog box, then, in the run
edit field, type in control userpasswords2, without the quotes, and press
enter.

In the resulting dialog box, uncheck the box that says, users must type a
password to use this computer, and make sure it's unchecked.

Tab to the ok button, and press enter or the spacebar.

You'll receive a dialog box prompting you to select the default user and to
enter the password associated with that user.

Once you select and type in the default username and password, tab to the ok
button, and press the spacebar.

At this point, you can close the userpasswords2 dialog box, if it's still
open, or unless you want to make more advanced modifications in one of the
other tabs, and from that point onwards, it should boot directly into the
desktop.

Keep in mind that if you have User Control turned on, it will prompt you to
press the yes button if you want to allow the action.

Good luck.

I would imagine that it only works with pop because the imap keeps the same
folder structure as the actual account such as with gmail.
The message rules button in WLM 11 is located in the folders tab in the one
labeled groups.
To put imap messages into folders you would need to set it up on the
original site such as gmail.

Hi

All of the voice profile I mentioned are available in JAWS 16. Eloquence is
already installed and it's profile can be found in JAWS options/VoiceVoice
adjustments. The other profiles I mentioned will also be found in JAWS
options/voices/voice adjustment if you have any of their voices installed.
Windows comes with a couple of SAPI 5 voices, so that profile should also be
available. Also there are several companies that cell SAPI 5 voices. You
can download and install Vocalizer or Realspeak voices from the Freedom
Scientific web site to also make those profiles available. You can switch
between the profiles by going to JAWS options/voices/Select a profile or by
pressing JAWSkey+control+s.

HI Lenny,

Yes, I understand. Smile. I will suggest you run both though as any modern
computer such as a Win8 can handle this configuration. You will also be much
more protected if you run both simultaneously. MSE (now defender in Win8) is
not very good at scanning one's registry. On the other hand, Malwarebytes
Pro is very, very good at scanning one's registry, and it is a very fast
malware scanner.

An important fact to consider when using these free options are the
following which I copied and pasted from the Super AntiSpyware website:
SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition does not include real-time blocking or
scheduled scanning.

No real-time blocking/scanning is similar to not having any malware
protection of this type at all. This means that when you visit a website
with code running in the background that can infect your computer with a
virus, you will not know that you've been infected until you run a malware
scan which can be days or weeks after the infection. Since you might already
be infected, the removal of malware might be impossible depending on the
aggressiveness of the malware. In short, no real-time scanning is a very bad
idea. George's Malwarebytes Pro is running in real-time and is a very
effective and very accessible malware utility.

Hello.
If there are any Wells Fargo on-line bankers on this list, you may
find it impossible to log on to your account at this time using a screen

reader.

After chatting with a tech support person at the bank, I learned today
that a recent update by the bank has caused log-in problems for people
using a screen reader. I was told a fix was forth-coming on August 8.
Until then, when you enter your user name and password, it will tell
you that page can not be found.

Talk about an unpleasant manner to spend a Saturday night, read on for the
details.

My router works perfectly so far as my home network and accessing the
internet, but since it has been a while I figured on taking a look at its
firmware version and then go online to find out if I had the most recent
update. It turns out after a few hours and some very bad language my wife
and I learned that we have the most recent version of its firmware but we
can't access the administration control panel from any system using IE 10.
Fortunately her system is still using XP pro and we were able to figure out
that the router is fine, just not accessible with IE 10.

This to me is stressful news and I thought somebody out there might benefit
from the fact we pretty much missed out on any of our entertainment programs
last night once we got in to this router problem.

I pity the poor person who has gone out and bought a new router thinking
there was something wrong with the unit currently on their desk. The kicker
is for my needs IE 10 is no different than IE 9 but my router disagrees.

The thing that really gets me about computers so often is that you can do it
right and it still won't work. Guess it's too late to pick another field of
interest but some days I do consider that very thing.

[JAWS-Users] jaws and ssh

2013-05-23 Thread Mark Peveto
Good morning,
This will probably be deeper than most users go, but I'm hoping someone
has done this with success.
I've been using secure crt with jaws 14 to ssh in to a linux box. It
works well, until the screen gets full, then it starts reading all
screwy. I didnt' used to have this problem with crt, but later versions
seem to wanna do this. If I manually clear the screen, it's good for a
few more minutes, but the problem eventually returns.
Is anyone able to work around this, or is there a better program to use
with jaws?

arrowing down to jaws and tapping enter, does not open it, real stumped

Hi there, first of all, you might have to set your JAWS to show up in the
system tray by right clicking on the start button, to do this, tab to the
start button, press the applications key, press ctrl tab to the task bar
page then, press tab until you hear Notification area Customize, when there,
tab to Application file for JAWS, it's a combo box, press the up arrow until
you hear show.

I hope this helps.

checks from the program. The demo version allows up to 50 transactions so
when you have written 50 checks you can delete the transactions and start

Hi Rich,
I changed the subject line to better reflect the topic,
and you can give this a try:

http://www.blind-computing.com/personal/pages/passkeeper.html

A password manager or vault, is simply a program to store your passwords
safely on your computer.
I use the above referenced program to store mine.

Any suggestions on where to get this?

Several strategies for dealing with passwords are:

Use the same password everywhere but add the name of the site to the end
of the password.

Use a password vault. That way you only have to remember one password,
then you can grab the password out of the vault, and you don't have to
remember each individual password, or username for that fact. And, you
can make the passwords extremely complex since you don't have to remember
them.

You could do the whole spreadsheet thing.

Also, one thing I did years ago, when I got frustrated because any
username I came up with was never accepted on every web site, there are
only so many combinations of Dan rossi DRossi DRossiBirthDay blah blah
blah. I just recreated all my accounts with a nonsense word that no one
else would ever use. Now I have the same username on every account.
Which

is helpful.

Also, you can use grade two braille as a great way to come up with some
very funky passwords. Lots of numbers and punctuation marks and no
dictionary words.

Hi All,

I've been using Passkeeper for quite awhile now , I finally ran out of
space. I don't know how Passkeeper determines its capacity, if it's by
total data or number of entries. But, here is how you'll know when you've
ran out of space. When you get into Passkeeper you usually land on the,
Add, button. Well, if you've filled it to capacity it doesn't come up on
the,Add, button, it opens on the, Remove, button. Also, when tabbing
around
you won't be able to find the, Add, button. You will only have the
Remove,

Edit, Quit buttons.
Hope this helps.
Take care.

Hi Dan .

Keep Me Signed In Checkbox
a.. Troubleshooting Problems Signing In
a.. Signing Out
When We Ask You To Sign In
We ask you to sign into your Amazon.com account any time we need to verify
your identity. This includes times when you access account or order
information to review or change something.

Keep Me Signed In Checkbox
When you sign in on Amazon.com, you may be presented with the option to
Keep me signed in. If you choose this option, Amazon will keep you signed
in for common activities such as making purchases and viewing your orders.
This option will only apply to the browser that you are using when you
select the box.

You should only choose to stay signed in if you're using a computer that you
don't share with other people. If you share the computer with others, they
may be able to access your Amazon.com account and perform actions on your
behalf without knowing your password. Never choose this feature if you are
on a public terminal, such as at a library or an internet café.

Even if you choose to remain signed in, you'll still be prompted for your
password at least every two weeks. We may still ask you to enter your
password for certain activities such as modifying your account.

Stop Staying Signed In
If you no longer wish to stay signed in on a particular browser, simply sign
out of Amazon.com on that browser. If you don't have physical access to that
browser, you can cancel all saved sign- ins by resetting your Amazon.com
password. This will cancel all existing Keep me signed in feature in
enabled.

I've noticed for a while now, that I have some issue signing into amazon.
If I click on Your account I don't see anywhere to put in my username
and pwd. Only after I click on wishlist or orders, or one of those other
personal things do I then get prompted to sign in. Am I missing
something?

Next, on my wish list, I cannot see a link or button to remove things from
my wish list, but if I use the JAWS cursor, I can see a delete which
does remove an item, but seems to be hit or miss if it removes the item I
actually want to remove.

No, I don't use the accessible amazon site, nor do I wish to if I don't
have to. Anyone else noticed this behavior?

Thanks.

I could not get my voice to work or read the way version 12 did.
This is probably due to my lack of computer skills.
I like the original eloquence voice and could not find this when I went to

The voices in 13 mis-read many words.
So, I went back to 12.

Good luck.

OK, in the past I have had few problems with Jaws betas or full versions
 but
Jaws 13 is causing me problems.

 1. When I press control Backspace or control Delete I hear blank
instead of the word being deleted in Word and Outlook. Annoying to me at
 least.

 2. 2 I have had more computer lockups with the last
couple of 13 updates, the beta worked just fine or at least the first one
did but since then it seems I have to totally restart the system a lot
 more
than I did in the past.

 3. I had never had the problems of iTunes freezing up in previous
versions but in the last two updates it happens a lot.

 4. When I try to enter settings and key labels so I can silence the
spacebar it throws me back out instead of letting me see the list of
 labels,
odd thing is it worked a few days ago but now it does not.

I have been using Jaws since 1998 so I don't think it is my lack of
 knowledge.

solution for reading those web pages that do not read. The solution is to
have the E mail read in the web browser and the command is Shift plus insert

This may not be the solution to your problem but was for me and will be for

Mark and David, I was having a similar problem reading certain E mail
messages in outlook 2010 with Jaws 13 and I talked to FS and they gave me a
solution for reading those web pages that do not read. The solution is to
have the E mail read in the web browser and the command is Shift plus insert

and it works fine.
This may not be the solution to your problem but was for me and will be for
others using outlook 2010 and jaws 13.

[JAWS-Users] Popup menus and IE

2011-11-11 Thread mark
Hi
Currently, I am having a problem and hope someone else may have solved
the trouble. I am using JAWS 13 and IE 8. When I log in to:
http://www.optionsxpress.com
They use popup menus when one wants to go to the money transfer section. In
IE 8 I am able to access this section using JAWS cursor. However, I want to
upgrade to IE 9. In IE 9 this pop up menu is invisible even though I turned
off the pop up blocker. What can I do to access this menu in IE 9?
 Thank you.

God bless,
Mark

I can't seem to make this feature work as it should. If I understand it
correctly, you press the Insert or other jaws key and then the spacebar. I
hear the click but when I try to put in those other letters like O, W, S, C
and so on, those characters get printed on the page.

Before I call Freedom, can someone tell me how to do this right?

I have XP home and 13.
I just installed the 13 disc.
Can I get the original voice of JAWS?
What speech is recommended?
Sappy or eloquence?
Does it matter?

Where do I go to set punctuation? I want to hear when I type or read a
capital letter by a higher pitch.

My second PC has XP pro and I purchased the appropriate version of JAWS last
I assume it is JAWS PRO. I did not see this on the disc I received.
Is this disc the right one?

Thank you for any help.

Hello Tasha,

The View tab of the ribbon is where you can find various options for
controlling the way that your messages are displayed. If the Show as
conversation checkbox is checked then you will get a grouping result in
your message list. The Layout group has three buttons that primarily
control the type and amount of information to be displayed. The information
I am showing below applies when the virtual ribbon menu is not being used.
There still are messages that JAWS will not read well when opened but you
can open those messages in your browser and read them correctly. To do so,
open the message from the message list and then use Alt followed by H
followed by A followed by V. Your browser should load with the message
displayed. Here is some information I sent a person a month or two ago that
might give you some tips about working with your message list in Outlook
2010. Feel free to write me off list if I can answer any questions or help
you further.

You can control layouts by using the buttons for the Navigation Pane,
reading pane and the To Do bar in the layout group under the view tab. Use
Alt followed by V to move to the view tab or Alt and then right arrow to it.
Tab into the lower part of the ribbon and keep tabbing until you find the
button for the navigation pane, which is in the layout group. Use tab once
more and you will find the button for the reading pane. Tab again and you
will find the button for the To Do bar. Pressing spacebar on each of those
buttons will present you with a list of choices. Use up or down arrow key
in the list and press enter key on the appropriate choice. There is also an
options choice for more specific selections.

If you do not want the calendar events or tasks showing then change the
status of the To Do bar from normal to off. Use the To Do button in the
layout group of the view tab of the ribbon. If you choose to minimize the
To Do list in the choices given after choosing that button then the other
checked items will not be shown in the window. However, you will be able to
temporarily show the items by using tab or shift+tab from the message lis to
the To Do button minimized choice and pressing enter key. If you use the To
Do button in the layout group of the view tab then you will get checkboxes
for the items to show. They will include tasks, date navigator, calendar,
number of months to show, etc. If you don't want those items showing on the
screen then apply the off status by pressing enter key on that choice
after using the spacebar on the To Do Bar button in the layout group.

The second of the two buttons of the layout group in tab order is the
reading pane button. After tabbing to it, press enter or spacebar to
activate the button and get the list of choices. If you choose the off
position then you will need to open the message by pressing enter key on it
in the list of messages to read it. If it is on then you can tab from the
list of messages to the reading pane or use f6. In Outlook 2010, you can
read the message from this pane without opening the message. Doing so does
not present the same risks as it did in earlier versions of Outlook as there
is much better security built in to the use of the reading pane. You can
choose to put the reading pane at the bottom, on the right, on the left or
turn it off by using the button for it in the layout group of the view tab
and making the appropriate choice. The list of choices found after pressing
spacebar on the reading pane button has an options choice that will bring up
a dialog box for some reading pane options. They will only be in effect if
the reading pane is not turned off. You can choose to have items marked as
read when viewed in the reading pane, marked as read when selection changes,
or you can choose to have items marked as read with a single key reading
using spacebar. The default is the latter choice. If the reading pane is
open, someone can just repeatedly press spacebar to scroll through the
message showing in the reading pane and not have to use arrow keys or the
mouse. When one message is done the next one starts.

You can find two buttons by pressing F6 repeatedly. They are the Normal and
Reading buttons. Use right and left arrow keys to move between them and
enter key to make one of them active. Even if the reading pane is off, if
you use the reading button then other panes will show

To
Do button in the layout group of the view tab then you will get checkboxes

number of months to show, etc. If you don't want those items showing on
the

Hi
Personally, I use solona. This is a system that allows one to take a
screen shot and send it to a volunteer who reads the capture image and sends
you the text to copy and paste in the box. I don't have the URL for the
program handy. Perhaps someone else can send it along to you.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Shopping Amazon with Jaws

2011-09-19 Thread mark
Hi
Actually, I have used the amazon website without incident a number of
times. I haven't used the research it option on JAWS to shop there. However,
I am thinking if it worked properly it might allow one to skip past some
links that just repeat themselves from one page to the next. That might be
more efficient but not necessary to enjoy the site.

[JAWS-Users] JAWS 13 Is Great!

2011-09-15 Thread mark
Hi
I have been trying the JAWS 13 beta version and it is great! It cleared
up the clumsy feeling I had in MS Office 2010 using JAWS 12. It has that
nifty OCR feature that I have yet to put in to action in a useful place, but
I am on the look out for a chance to try it out. I think it would be nice if
in the release version if they would turn on the auto read in MS out look
2010 but other than that I am very pleased with what I am seeing.

It works in classic display mode where there are the symbols in the upper
right hand corner for maximizing ETC. It functions like this.

I use it in notepad but it will work on other programs as well. In notepad I

have an auto start function which calls auto maximize encoded in my default
script. Auto maximize looks to see if there is a symbol that says maximize
in the corner as I mentioned. If it finds such a symbol it performs a left
mouse click which maximizes the window. The thing is it does that so quickly

it is almost transparent to the user. Some times I can catch it working but
normally it just does it so fast it's not even an issue.

You do need to feel comfortable in the script files but it does not take
much programming ability to install it.

Be advised that you can expect problems like this with Research it,
as long as it requires imformation from the internet.
FS will always be updating this feature because the websites the imformation

is being retrieved from will continue to change.
This is just a heads up, so folks will have a better understanding of why
they have problems with the feature.

Hi all you baseball fans!

I too cannot get my beloved team scores on research it. I think that
I may have found a temporary solution until FS fixes the problem It
not as easy as research it, but it durable.

I did a Google search for NLB scores for 05/02/11 since I wanted the
information for that day. I found my information on USA Today and
what I was looking for was found in the summary link.

I then did ALT+D to get the address bar and change the URL date to
last night's game and I got the information for my team.

Caution: when you go into the summary link for your team, press the
letter R for the radio button to uncheck refresh the page every two
minutes and choose not to refresh.

Here is the URL:

http://content.usatoday.com/sportsdata/scores/mlb/2011/06/21

As I said, it is good enough for now and no telling how long FS will
give us another update for Jaws 12 which I am using the latest build.

I hope that this will work for all of you. Please let me know if this
does not work for you.

Go Nat!

Take care.

Hi David,
Wow, I am impressed. It takes a lot of work to get a list up to this
size. Hats off to you and all those who make this possible.

God bless,
Mark

Subject: [JAWS-Users] current membership

It occurs to me that I haven't posted such a message for quite a while so
here is the current subscriber total to this list. Not counting the mail
archive service that I have been using for several years we now have 554
members. Personally I'm impressed or to say the least surprised.

Blind computing now has 398 subscribers. I'm glad there is a lot of space
for the database on the server.

The most important thing is that things remain orderly on here which as a
rule they sure are, thanks to the membership for making our jobs of running
these things on the easier side lately.
