[JAWS-Users] help needed using wordpress with jaws
Hi. I hope someone on list can help with this problem. I am posting here because we are exclusively using jaws with wordpress for testing. First, do people have any tips for how to use wordpress with jaws? certain things like widgets in the backend are prooving difficult to set options for. secondly, i need an accessible template, preferably one that perhaps allows for different contrasts in case someone is using magic magnification as well. Re: [JAWS-Users] how in the world do you use windows live messenger 2011?
PS: when installed, sign in as normal then go to tools then to options, and go to the layout section in the list. Press tab, and untick the following boxes: Show favourites, show groups, show the tab bar, and show the what's new list. then click ok, this'll make your experience a lot easier. Also if contacts are arranged in groups you can change that option from this section as well to online status etc. Mo. Re: [JAWS-Users] how in the world do you use windows live messenger 2011?
Hi Jim. The simple answer is you don't use it lol. Its impossible to use with jaws as usual microsoft haven't bothered to consider accessibility. I'd advise you to downgrade to the previous version then make sure not to update via windows update even when its offered to you, you should be able to untick it. This is the full offline installer, when installing simply untick the apps you don't want in the list, i just installed messenger i never install any of their other stuff if i can help it... Here's the link to download the last known accessible version. let me know if it works for you and if you need any further help: http://www.oldapps.com/msn_messenger.php?old_msn=22?download Mo. [JAWS-Users] Classic shell was Re: Windows 7 Start Menu
Hi Guys. Anyone that uses windows7 but doesn't like the standard start menu may want to try classic shell, a link to which is provided further down this email. Classic shell changes your start menu and windows explorer to look like the start menu and explorer found when setting windows xp to classic view, in short the default start menu found in windows 2000. its alot simpler to navigate. Although the settings dialogue isn't very accessible in classic shell, when its installing it will configure the start menu to classic mode by default for you so no settings adjustment should in theory at any rate, be necessary. its only if you want to adjust settings for drag and drop or for what appears on toolbars that you will need to access settings. You can change your start menu back to windows7 either via the settings though a little sited help may be needed, or by simply uninstalling the program. You can also choose what you want to install, for example if you want a windows7 start menu but not classic explorer, or classic windows explorer but not start menu, simply press space on the option when installing and disable the one you don't want. here's the link: http://classicshell.sourceforge.net/index.html Mo. [JAWS-Users] Jaws not reading desktop icons after video intercept update
Hi, I've been experiencing a rather strange issue lately. Recently, i installed a new NVIDIA graphics card in my PC. There were initially no problems with jaws that i could see. However recently, i've been getting an MFC virtual viewer application error when ever i try to use the virtual viewer to virtualize the screen or display skype messages so i can copy and paste etc. also, jaws isn't reading my desktop icons at all. I tried reinstalling video intercept (the latest version), but no joy. before i reinstalled video intercept, the only issue was the virtual viewer, after installing the video intercept the desktop icons won't read, but the viewer works when it wants too. Do i have to uninstall jaws and video intercept, then reinstall? any ideas greatly apreciated. Many thanks, Mo. Re: [JAWS-Users] sounds for avast
Hi. I'm just wondering if avast has somehow become muted? what i mean is windows seems to offer individualised volume controls for different applications, is it possible that the volume for avast could be set to 0? the avast sounds should either be in the media folder inside the windows folder on the root of your hard drive, or in the alwal software folder in program files. I would check for you straight away but i don't have avast 5 on this machine. by the way, don't update to the latest program version yet as they're working on accessibility, they broke the rightclick menu in terms of accessibility in 5.0.667. Mo. john wrote: Hi list. I have been using avast 5.0.594 since it came out and find it very good. Over the last 2 weeks, the sounds that came with avast seem to have disappeared. In the past when windows came on, avast would say "virus database has been updated." but now when I go to the sounds tab in control panel, there are no sounds listed for avast. All the windows sounds are fine, and when I manually check the update tab in avast, it seems to have updated the virus definitions automatically. Has anyone else noted this and where does one find the sounds? I am using vista. Re: [JAWS-Users] Question about using thumb drive version of Jaws
Hi, yes that's all correct. If you download the USB version directly from freedom scientific's downloads page, the file they provide when extracted will give you the structure you need as well, batch file, autorun.inf file, etc. What you've outlined below is all correct and using this procedure you shouldn't have any problems. [JAWS-Users] Interesting article on Avast!
Hi List. I don't wish to spark off a debate, rather i'd wish to end the current debate we're having with the following article. It makes for an interesting read and goes some way towards stating what i've already stated, each to his own. the number of PC's on which MSEE is installed has not caught up to any of the big name providers yet. first, microsoft launched 1care, a product which didn't do well. this article references various things from the web including a PC magazine review as well as including statistics and links to other anti virus commpetitors. This was written by the Avast staff, and what's interesting is the fact that they're hole heartedly stating that they're not the only ones, and that if someone wants to, they can use any other product and don't have to use theirs. alot of the time, articles like this encourage you to use the product in question. Re: [JAWS-Users] microsoft essential
Hi Steve. Not at all, If i found microsoft security essentials to work better for me i would certainly recommend it to people. I've been using other microsoft products as well as windows for years now sync toy for my backups, microsoft's remote desktop over other sollutions, exchange server, office to mention a few. one could argue that by using those products i am putting my eggs in 1 basket, contradicting what i'd stated previously. Yes, i'll agree that avast isn't totally accessible, in that respect microsoft security essentials does have its advantages, that and the fact that you can disable it very easily and yes, even uninstall it easily. I was just simply saying that i never had to go in to safe mode when reviewing different anti virus products. I'm going to post an article under a separate thread that should shed a little light on this debate, its based on a PC magazine review and was written by avast in response to this very issue, who's better? avast actually went so far as to directly compare them selves to microsoft security essentials and also to AVG as well as some of the other providers. they weren't trying to say they were better, they simply looked at the facts. As i've said previously, what ever works best for you. Kind regards, Mo. Steve wrote: Mo, I'm afraid you're letting your bias against Microsoft software influence your judgement on av programs. As one who has encountered several instances of Avast 5, it is almost impossible to uninstall without either going into Safe Mode, or if you are lucky enough to click on the uninstall button within the twenty seconds they allow if you do it from add/remove programs. I think you could also use appremover to uninstall it, but it otherwise isn't easy. Considering that the Microsoft Security Essentials program has very good reviews from different sources including Windows Secrets, that it utilizes very low resources, that it doesn't have any accessibility issues, and that it can be easily temporarily disabled or permanently uninstalled, I have used it and recommend it for my clients. I don't see any reason to use another company's anti-virus product when it still isn't completely accessible. - Original Message - From: "Mobeen Iqbal" To: Sent: Monday, August 16, 2010 3:11 PM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] microsoft essential Avast's removal process has vastly improved from version 4.8, can you positively state its not better than MSEE if you haven't tried their latest version? if you have, then that's just your opinion, its enough for me that i have to use microsoft's software for daily tasks, i'll refrane from using their anti virus packages as well purely because if they do inadvertantly break something which they're almost certainly bound to do at some point just like they've done in the past, then i'm not being lumbered with an unnecissary problem. Avast has got me out of quite a few holes that many other anti-virus checkers haven't been able to, i spend my time testing various checkers this is what i base my opinions on, and user feedback as well. Hello. Just letting people know, i reported a bug a week or 2 ago with the dropbox website where the sharing folders dialogue for creating or deleting shares wasn't accessible. they've now fixed this apparently, so the links are now accessible again and you can edit your folder shares as needed. Re: [JAWS-Users] downloading multiple files
Hi, if i were you i'd use free download manager. It has a hole host of options, you can customise right down to how many connections the manager uses, support for youtube videos torrents etc as well as standard files, and if you right click anywhere on a page there's an option to download either selected or download all files on that page, useful if you're downloading audio books. I use the lite version allowing me to add features as and when i want them but its up to you, visit the downloads page at: http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/download.htm Mo. john wrote: Hi list. I am using vista, IE 7, JFW 10. Now, for some reason, when I down arrow to the 2nd file, and right-click, the context menu will not appear until the first file has completely finished downloading. I went to IE options, on the advanced tab to see if there were any settings that could be changed but there was nothing that seemed relevant. 1. Any suggestions as how to change the IE download manager? 2. I went to the "programs" page to check any download managers, but I note "download express" does not support vista. Re: [JAWS-Users] thunderbird vs. windows live mail
Hi. I use thunderbird my self, i've tried windows live mail and hated it. Thunderbird 2.0 works better than thunderbird 3 to be honest, in thunderbird 3, i'd recommend turning off tabs by default emails open in the same tab, you want them to open in a new window so you can close the window. I think its control w to close a tab. If i were you, i'd download thunderbird 2.0. its much more user friendly and less cluttered for speech users, i'm using very happily with jaws 11 and GMail. Re: [JAWS-Users] Does anyone know of a shareware program to Backup a external drive?
Hi. The best program i've found is Sync Toy made by microsoft. it has 3 backup modes, echo, syncranise and Contribute. Its freeware. the functions it offers are as follows: Synchronize The synchronize action will make two folders mirror each other, keeping the latest changes made to the files in either folder. New and updated files are copied both ways. Renames and deletes on either side are repeated on the other. Folder Creates, folder deletes and folder updates are also propagated both ways. For example, you have two computers. You keep a copy of pictures, documents, and/or tunes on both. Changes often occur on both computers. You want SyncToy to notice additions, deletions, changes, and renames on both computers, and then do the right thing to bring the folders back in sync. Synchronize is the SyncToy action to use. list of 5 items . Every file in the left folder that is new or changed is copied to the right folder. . Every file in the left folder that has been renamed is renamed in the right folder. . Every file that was deleted from the left folder is deleted in the right folder. . Note: SyncToy does not actually delete any files by default. It merely moves the files to the Recycle Bin. To change this behavior, uncheck the "Save overwritten files in the Recycle Bin" option in the folder pair option window. . The process is repeated for files in the right folder. list end Echo The echo action will make copies of files that are new and changed on the left to the right. New and updated files are copied left to right. Renames and deletes on the left are repeated on the right. Folder creates, folder deletes and folder updates on the left are repeated on the right. For example, when you travel, you take a copy of your pictures, tunes, and documents to work on. When you return, you want SyncToy to notice the files you added, changed, deleted, and renamed in the left folder, and you want SyncToy to recreate those additions, changes, deletions, and renames in the right folder. Echo is very similar to Synchronize, except Echo works only left to right. Echo is the SyncToy action to use. list of 7 items . To change this behavior, uncheck the "Save overwritten files in the Recycle Bin" option in the folder pair option window. . No left folder files are deleted, or renamed. . No files are copied from right to left. . Right folder files are deleted. list end Contribute Contribute will add changes from the left folder to the right folder. New and updated files are copied left to right. Renames on the left are repeated on the right. No deletions. Folder creates and folder updates on the left are repeated on the right For example, you have a compact flash, SD, USB thumb drive, or other removable media that you take with you when you travel. You probably delete some files on the removable drive while you are away so that you can add or change other files. When you get back, you only want SyncToy to recognize new, renamed, and changed files, and you want the new stuff copied to the right folder. Contribute is the same as Echo but without the deletes. Contribute is the SyncToy action to use. list of 4 items . New and updated files from the left folder are copied to the right folder. . Hi Chris. A couple of questions. firstly, do you have any more details on the windows7 list how to subscribe etc? Secondly, what do you mean by terminal session? Virtual PC is just running XP in a virtual environment much as VMWare would surely? or is XP being directly controled by windows 7 i.e you're still using windows 7 but with the xp backend? i hope this makes sense i just didn't understand your terminology, virtual terminal verses terminal... Re: [JAWS-Users] Requesting Information on getting a new laptop with Jaws.
Hi Erin. I may be a little late in replying to your email, as by my time i've established its now the afternoon and you've probably already got your self a laptop. But i'll do my best to summarise. In terms of jaws and the mac, they do not work together. The 3 versions of windows 7, indeed its confusing, firstly i'd advise you to get the 32 bit version if that's what you've previously used as that guarantees compatibility with current programs which is what most users opt for if they're not running servers or memory intensive applications. 2GB or more of ram and a minimum of a 120 GB hard drive should be more than enough for your needs. As for windows7 versions, what versions are they offering in your part of the world? windows7 home basic is probably not worth going for, go for windows7 ultimate or windows7 home premium. home premium will be fine for your needs, home basic would probably do the job as well but to be on the safe side, get home premium. there aren't many differences, ultimate offers everything windows7 could ever have offered you, home premium verses home basic? home basic doesn't offer media center recording from TV cards, aero affects etc as far as i know? its been so confusing as microsoft being microsoft couldn't just stick to 1, 2, or even 3 editions we've got 4 or more versions of the same operating system to choose from, home basic, home starter, home premium, ultimate, server, etc. ah well, that's microsoft for you. Bottom line: go for a laptop. Macs are generally more expensive and i'm not just saying this because i'm biost towards windows, i'm saying it because i don't like a company that's arogant and full of them selves and that don't even let me customise my devices with out a fight! In regards to your jaws licences, some users have said that your jaws licence would work on all windows7 versions, i could be wrong in this regard as i'm not using windows7 yet with the version of jaws i have. regarding your sound issue, that can probably easily be fixed if we patch your stereo mix output instead of your microphone input so people will be able to hear jaws. that's easily done i believe from within windows7 and i can give you a hand trying to get this feature to work. I hope this has been of some help to you, if you have any further questions, drop me a line. Mo. Erin wrote: Hello, My name is Erin, and I'm new to the group. I use Jaws 10 and 11 standard. Also, I saw there were three different versions of seven, and I don't know what the differences are. I like to do several things on my computer. Burn and rip cd's, download music, convert things with GoldWave, join things together, play games and much more. I also love to go to chatroom sites and play yahtzy. right now people can't hear me using my vista laptop. I've been told it's because of my sound card. However I've tried both speakers and external sound cards. People still can't hear jaws. As I said I'm getting a new laptop, and I'm looking for input. Things like, the size of the harddrive, how much ram, 32 or 64 bit, operating system, microsoft verses mac, sound card, what version of jaws, and everything, and anything else, people can advise me with more information. i'm going in the morning, sorry for such short notice, but it suddenly came up. Re: [JAWS-Users] how to set jaws speed for various applications
Hello. I have just confirmed, the following works with my version of jaws, please let me know if this solves your problem. First, open your application, in this example i opened notepad. Next, alt tab to the jaws window. Press alt O to go to the options menu, then go down to voices, then in to global voice adjustment and press enter. Go up and down with your arrows, if you press your down arrow once, jaws should say modify application then the name of what ever you have open, in my example jaws said modify application notepad, then if i scroled down again it said modify default. Then, tab and set the options that you would like jaws to use e.g the rate, voice etc. Then tab to ok, and that should be all you need to do! Many Thanks, Mo. [JAWS-Users] Avast and GMail fix
Hi. Further to the previous discussions on this topic, i've been testing the latest version of avast 5.0.594 over the last week and putting together a list of issues to be fixed. one of the issues people were having is the scanning of emails for viruses using avast, specifically when sending email via the gmail service. As most email providers such as GMail offer virus scanning when emails are received or sent at their end, for the time being if using gmail you can safely disable the mail scanning feature of avast. for the more technical among you, it appears that gmail have changed their certificate settings when using SSL over the last couple of weeks, so i'm assuming that avast need to do some more testing before allowing the gmail IP addresses through their scanner etc. Here's how to disable the shield. 1. go to ad/remove programs and highlight the avast 5.0 free anti virus option. Note: i have not provided instructions for accessing add/remove programs here as too many people have too many different configurations, but email if you don't know how and i'll be happy to ablije. 2. click on the change option or change/remove in windows xp. 3. when the avast installation window is displayed, highlight the change option in the list with the arrows and click on next. 4. when the changes screen is displayed, find the mail shield option with the arrows, and press space to untick it. then, click on next. 5. the email shield will be uninstalled. click on finish to restart your computer to save changes. This issue doesn't seem to be affecting other email providers hotmail, aol etc, though i could be wrong. Its only because GMail use a secure connection to send your emails. I hope this has been of some help to people while avast get the issue fixed. they do know about it, so hopefully it'll be fixed soon. Mo. Ishe Chinyoka wrote: Hi, I once experienced frustration with Avast in the same way: but you can't delete it from the Explorer. Go to your Add/Remove programs in the Control Panel. When you get the Avast item from the listbox, select Remove. Now from this point on, Avast uses the logic that no sane person other than a malware would choose to remove it. So it displays a countdown timer with the question: "Are you sure you would like to remove Avast?" (n=30...) Unfortunately, this message seems not to be accessible using JAWS in this latest Avast edition, so you must use the JAWS cursor. Place your cursor on the Yes part of it and simulate a left mouse button click to dismiss the message before the end of 30 seconds. If you are slow, it will tell you that uninstallation couldn't complete due to an error. Right now I prefer Microsoft Essentials or Eset Nod32 which I find their interfaces accesible. Re: [JAWS-Users] Avast 5.94 now fully accessible!
Hi. I haven't personally installed internet security yet, but they did say on the website that they'd be carrying changes across all versions when they released the next version, which was about a month or 2 ago so i'm assuming they meant this version. What you could do is download and install the trial of internet security and test it with jaws and let us know if it works. I will be installing internet security at some point my self, i will report back when i have it installed if noone's got any more on this issue. i've just checked and the latest version of internet security is 5.0.594, so i'm assuming it will be accessible. you can download it here: http://download.softpedia.com/dl/0451f5e8f9c8f86828bc9525b5274085/4c307cf7/100145381/software/antivirus/setup_ais_eng.exe Mo. Avast 5.0.594 now seems to be fully accessible with screen readers. progress bars are now spoken, as well as all of the interface. scans are now read out in realtime as they should be, providing the user with information you'd probably have had to use the jaws curser for. pressing tab and shift tab seems to be sufficient to navigate, in other words using standard navigational keystrokes gets you to the information you want to reach. the only flaw i've noticed is the settings dialogue, for screen reader users its read out correctly, but the tabs aren't immediately noticeable. you have to press space on the settings button, then tab, then shift tab until jaws doesn't say anything when shift tab is pressed e.g tab, gaming mode. shift tab, gaming mode settings. shift tab. when jaws says shift tab only, scrole up twice with the arrows and this should get you to where the tabs are, from there you have access to over 10 different tabs to finely customize avast settings including the look, sounds, scans, etc. feeling brave? most of you will already have the opportunity to update via the program interface its self, rightclick your avast icon, click on update, then program update. but for those of you that have not got it installed or don't want to use the system tray method, here's a download link to the free anti virus program. it is not necissary to install the chrome web browser, so click no when you are asked to install. http://download.softpedia.ro/dl/52604cb5db4419bc3e3d1f6a072972b8/4c2a81e1/16474/software/ANTIVIRUS/setup_av_free_eng.exe Thanks all for reading. Re: [JAWS-Users] question on avast
yes but as avast is scanning all files in realtime anyway, you can just do a manual scan if you're afraid a file you've coppied isn't well, trust worthy. just do that once a week and you should be good to go. i don't see why i should use any more of microsoft's products than i have to, again its about putting all your eggs in one basket, no thanks... just my opinion. Re: [JAWS-Users] Avast 5.94 now fully accessible!
Hi. Yes, there used to be a way of doing this, but they changed the interface in avast 5. there maybe a skins option somewhere still, but i haven't found it yet, i'll keep the list posted if i do find one. The only thing you are able to do is turn off graphical affects which may help, that's in the general section of settings, i've got mine turned on though and it appears to work fine. Re: [JAWS-Users] Computer advice.
Hi Guys. I'm not the list owner, but wasn't this thread meant to have been closed down ages ago? This person isn't after 100 different opinions on the same subject. she just wants a simple straight answer and sitting here debating about this isn't going to help her in the slightest. I've personally tried windows 7 ultimate 32bit on a PC with jaws 11, 2GB of ram and a 320 GB hard drive. the pc in question had photoshop, office 2007, IE8 etc etc and they all ran fine with jaws running, and that was an AMD, i prefer intel personally. Also, please remember that we don't all have the money to shop for the latest and greatest, some users have said that she should get a really really high spec PC. its like when i'm advising and passing pc's on to the elderly. they just want something that just, well, works! not something that they can run the latest 3D games on, or the latest netbook with solid state storage, bluetooth and wireless. to them, the word bluetooth probably means talking about teath, literally. But that's besides the point. I'm not trying to say that jenny doesn't know what she's talking about, and i stand corrected if i have got any part of this email wrong in advance, i'm mearly saying that if she wants something basic, then advise her on that basis, and if people want to shop at superstores where things are a little expensive, there is nothing or very little one can do about that. I hate PC world, but many of the people i work with have shopped there, shoot me, my job is mearly to get them up and running. steve, i've just read your last. I agree with you, i provide technical support all the time as well as custom PC building, i'm from the days when we'd have dos on an old BBC computer, and if someone can get buy with what ever is good for them, so be it. Just my 2 cents or penny's worth depending on where you are. Best wishes to you all, Mo. Scorpio Forever wrote: Hello Steve, I don't know where you are shopping, but where ever it is, stop shopping there immediately, you're getting very ripped off. Grins. Have you actually tried to run Jaws 11 on a windows 7 system with only 2 gigs or RAM? I mean, have you actually physically tried it, or are you going on the basis of supposition and assumption? The fact is, I've used computers running Windows 7 and Jaws 11 with only 2 gigs of RAM, please believe me, unless I was only running those two pieces of software, those being the OS and the screen reader, everything would indeed be fine, but load any other piece of software in addition to that, and things would start to lag dramatically. As for the solid state drives being on 160, you're nuts. One can get a netbook with a 10 inch screen, and a 250 gig solid state drive for 799, and that is running the latest and greatest software. I've seen it, and had a chance to play with it at the store where I saw it, so please, don't assume to speak for the entire population, because you most assuredly are not the entire population of the world, so you couldn't possibly speak for everyone.
