Hi, tried JAWS 8, both builds 423 and 2173, and build 423 I got a Video
Intercept Error and the programme was generally sluggish. Build 2173 was
 the
same, except no Video Intercept errors occurred. JAWS 9 beta cracked it.
Very responsive, even when typing. So, in short, yes, but with some
 pitfalls. Hope that helps.

But I will ask once more.
Does jaws 8 and vista home premium work well together?
I just bought a lap top with vista home premium on it.
 Thanks very much.

Hi, I already knew this. I knew what the video problem was caused by. I just

JAWS 8.0.2173 (The last JAWS 8.0 release) works with Windows Vista Home

Eloquence sounds like crap now with the rice crispies effect. I'll take
some slowness which I didn't have on my machine over the constant crackling.
FS is aware of this problem but dosent' know if it will be resolved in the
jaws 9 final or not. I for one will not be pleased if it's not fixed.

I can tell you that Jaws works well with Vista though. The only problem I
have had is with Office 2007 causing Jaws to lock up sometimes. But the
Jaws dump command seems to fix that.
The only drawback to Vista are the drivers for some of my peripheral

But for the most part, I am beginning to like Vista, it's just a whole new

Subject: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 8 and Vista

 Hello Listers:

I am one of those who joined the list after reading Dean Martineau's
newsletter last week and I like what I have read so far.

At present I am using JAWS 7.500 and on inquiring about how Vista works
 from
a number of sources I am getting mixed signals, e.g., leave it alone for a
while as there are a number of bugs which need to be fixed. Another
 comment
I got was that when installing Vista sometimes the installation is aborted
and the process needs to be restarted.

The latest version of JAWS is 8.0.2317 (or is it 71? and as your list
appears to have quite a number of experts, please let me have the benefit
 of
 your advice and comments.

Another thing: I hear that JAWS 9 is due some time this month. Anyway, I
look forward to hearing from you all.

 Hello Listers:

I am one of those who joined the list after reading Dean Martineau's

At present I am using JAWS 7.500 and on inquiring about how Vista works
 from
a number of sources I am getting mixed signals, e.g., leave it alone for a

The latest version of JAWS is 8.0.2317 (or is it 71? and as your list

Another thing: I hear that JAWS 9 is due some time this month. Anyway, I

Hi Jerry,
If you are going to buy a new computer off-the-shelf,
then expect to buy it with Vista already loaded.
There may still be some XP machines out there, but they will be hard to find.
A word of caution, spend a little extra money, and get a machine with
something more than Vista home basic.
The low end of Vista, has less than Xp home.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 8 and Vista

2007-09-10 Thread AMTK161
Hi Francis,

I bought a laptop running Vista and haven't had any real problems. Sure,
it requires some configuration and some getting used to, but that's true
with anything new in technology. I'd say don't be afraid to upgrade...I
tried to make my XP laptop hold out as long as possible for fear of
upgrading to Vista because of the problems you described...And so far, I
haven't had any real problems.

Please let me know if I can be of any further help to you!

Hope this helps,

That's verry, verry simple! Really, it is!
Reload JAWS. Yep, that's it
This command is also available in JAWS 7.10.500.
It's for emergencies when you can't get JAWS to work properly, or unload it

Hope this helps,

Hopefully on your version of jaws you have a hot key for it.
Just hit the hot key, it should come back on.

In Jaws 8, if Jaws stops responding, you can do an insert Windows f4 to
 completely dump Jaws.

The latest version is, 8.0.2173 .
I can't tell you anything about installing Vista since the machine I use
 Vista on came that way.
I can tell you that Jaws works well with Vista though. The only problem
 I
have had is with Office 2007 causing Jaws to lock up sometimes. But the
Jaws dump command seems to fix that.
The only drawback to Vista are the drivers for some of my peripheral

But for the most part, I am beginning to like Vista, it's just a whole

I am one of those who joined the list after reading Dean Martineau's

At present I am using JAWS 7.500 and on inquiring about how Vista works
 from

 a

The latest version of JAWS is 8.0.2317 (or is it 71? and as your list

2007-09-10 Thread Francis E. Khan
Hi Michael:

About Vista: I hear that there is Vista Ultimate and a number
of other other names that cropped up. My computer has 2 GB of
memory and the processor is supposed to be 3.6 Ghz so if I
upgrade to Vista what should I buy.

I am also supposed to get a laptop when I do my teaching
assignments and, here again, I would like some suggestions.
Some people recommend a minimum of 1 GB of memory and some
people tell me that that is not good enough. And what about
the size of the hard drive. And also what is a good brand of
lap top I should purchase.

I have always used a desktop version and I am wondering
whether I can buy a USB keypad to use instead of having to
learn the laptop keystrokes.

Thanks in advance for any help I can get.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 8 and Vista

2007-09-10 Thread AMTK161
Hi Francis,

I have Windows Vista Home Premium, and a 120 GB hard drive with 1 GB of
memory. I don't know about my processer, or whether a USB keypad will work
for using JAWS keystrokes. However, I tend to think you could hook a USB
keypad up...Although, in all honesty, I have JAWS set to desktop keystrokes
and really haven't had any problems with navigating with the PC and JAWS
cursors, etc.

As far as what laptop to buy, I'd stay away from HP. I have had problems
with the DC connector coming loose inside the computer when I have the
computer plugged in to an outlet. Right now, I have a Sony Vyo
VGN-N365...Or something like that...And it works great.

If you have any other questions, I'd be more then happy to help you; please
email them to me off-list as the topic is starting to stray away from JAWS.

Take care,
Michael

Hi Francis,

If my memory serves me correctly, I think someone on the list was saying
they ad trouble with the USB Keypad working with jaws sometime earlier this
year. May be one of the other moderators might remember better.

As to using the laptop key strokes, truthfully I work with botha laptop (my
personal system) and a desktop at work. Shifting between the two is pretty
cool and I find that using the desktop keystrokes on the laptop ca be a bit
awkward since the insert is not in a convenient place.

2007-09-10 Thread Joseph Lee
Hi Francis,
There are technically six versions of Vista: Starter, Home Basic,
Home Premium, Business, Enterprise and Ultimate (which I have on
my system). For RAM, I would say that 1 GB should be fine. I
recommend at least 60 GB hard disk (Vista installation is larger
than previous Windows versions). 2 GB RAM is useful if you are
going to do extensive gaming and multimedia tasas on your system.
For more info about Vista and JAWS, check out tutorials on Vista
done by Rick Harmon at Blind Geek Zone website.
Cheers,
Joseph

Some people recommend a minimum of 1 GB of memory and some
people tell me that that is not good enough. And what about

I have always used a desktop version and I am wondering
whether I can buy a USB keypad to use instead of having to
learn the laptop keystrokes.

Thanks in advance for any help I can get.

 Hi Francis,

I bought a laptop running Vista and haven't had any real
 problems. Sure,
it requires some configuration and some getting used to, but
 that's true
with anything new in technology. I'd say don't be afraid to
 upgrade...I
tried to make my XP laptop hold out as long as possible for
 fear of
upgrading to Vista because of the problems you
 described...And so far, I

Please let me know if I can be of any further help to you!

 Hope this helps,

 Hello Listers:

I am one of those who joined the list after reading Dean

At present I am using JAWS 7.500 and on inquiring about how
Vista works from a number of sources I am getting mixed
signals, e.g., leave it alone for a while as there are a
number of bugs which need to be fixed. Another comment I
 got
was that when installing Vista sometimes the installation
 is
aborted and the process needs to be restarted.

The latest version of JAWS is 8.0.2317 (or is it 71? and

your list appears to have quite a number of experts, please
let me have the benefit of your advice and comments.

Another thing: I hear that JAWS 9 is due some time this

Hi there,
Welcome to the list.
The latest JAWS 8 version for Vista is 8.0.2173.
In order to install JAWS successfully, you'll need to disable
what's called User Account Control--a new security mechaniim on
Vista that prevents ordinary users from acceising things like
installing software.

 Hi Francis,
There are technically six versions of Vista: Starter, Home
 Basic,
Home Premium, Business, Enterprise and Ultimate (which I
 have on
my system). For RAM, I would say that 1 GB should be fine.
 I
recommend at least 60 GB hard disk (Vista installation is
 larger
than previous Windows versions). 2 GB RAM is useful if you
 are
going to do extensive gaming and multimedia tasas on your
 system.
For more info about Vista and JAWS, check out tutorials on
 Vista
