Agreed, but that's a secondary option, if you've got to do something else.
With place markers, I've noticed that sometimes, they don't hold, though I'd
try the place marker first. Going to start using them at work more, thanks

Thanks, Patti, you've given me a very constructive workaround, and I'll use
it. Still, it's an extra step and a distraction. Let's say I'm copying seven
items of information from different parts of a webpage. With previous
versions of JAWS, I could rely on focus staying where I'd left it on
transferring each item to a Word file. This is already a tedious process
that requires concentration. Your idea will help, but it's still an extra
precaution I shouldn't need to take based on earlier versions of JAWS.

Note for anyone following this thread. You can set a temporary placemarker
in a browser with control-shift-k. As I recall, it is replaced each time you
set a new one or close the window.

Hi. We've had an earlier thread on this subject. I've also written and spoken
to VFO about it, but all they told me was to change certain JAWS quick settings

The place mmarkerseems like a good work around, also remembering a key word,
any word in that area, or a short sequence, and using the find feature,
control f, could laos be used.

I don't run Outlook, but take a look & see if you have this setting. While in
Outlook press, Jaws key + V, to open Outlook's quick settings. Arrow down to
General Maill Settings, & under this heading see if you have, Messages
automatically read, checked. If this is checked, uncheck it with the spacebar,
tab to, Okay, & press enter to save your change & close quick settings.
Hopefully this will do what you're wanting.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 2018 Latest Build And Microsoft Excel 2018

2018-04-10 Thread HICKS, Steven (ROYAL CORNWALL HOSPITALS NHS TRUST)
Hi all,

Just had a reply from Sight And Sound, JAWS Support here in the U.K.
Apparently this is an issue that a few other users have encountered and
Freedomscientific are working on a fix.
So releaved in a way that it is not this laptop again as I have had a few
issues with sound card dropouts and that which I have thankfully managed to
find work around for.
It is a lovely laptop apart from the fact that the battery life is pretty
rubbish, you are lucky to get 2 hours out of it constant use.
It will last for quite a bit longer if I am just playing music to my bluetooth
speaker and not actually typing and using JAWS, seems a bit strange as JAWS is
only using the internal speakers but I guess that it is having to process a lot
more and it does turn off the hard drive after a while as well which probably
helps.
Maybe I will try disabling the bluetooth and using it constantly with JAWS but
I can't really see that this will make much different, in my experience,
bluetooth seems really efficient on power consuption.
FN+f10 is supposed to turn off the keyboard backlight but I don't think that my
model has that.
Strange thing is that in the manual, it says that fn+home will disable the
radio, I am guessing that this is the wireless radio as there is a separate
key, fn+printscreen to disable the wireless but in my opinion, the manual seems
to gbe a generic one and not the specific one for my machine as it says that
you can disable the AMD graphics in the bios but there is no option there and
when I called then, they said you can't do it.

Dear friends,

I Am running a Dell Enspiron 5570 laptop with Microsoft Windows 10 Home 64 bit.
I Am unable to run Microsoft Excel 2016 after a fresh installation.
It won't even run in safe mode.
Basically I can start typing, just entering the column headers, I get to the
third entry and it just stops responding.
The laptop has an Intel HD620 and AMD HD530 video adaptor.
I Have tried disabling the AMD adaptor, re-booting and testing Microsoft Excel
and it does the same thing.
Both video drivers are up-to-date, the latest from Dell.
If I close JAWS and use NVDA, it seems to work just fine.
I Have Microsoft Outlook 2016 and that seems to work just fine as well.
Running in safe mode disables any Microsoft Excel plugins apparently.
I Also use an internet based application called Service Anywhere and that seems
to work just fine, it is just the Microsoft Excel that I have issues with.
There don't seem to be any options in the Intel or AMD graphics settings to set
a primary video adaptor, all the apps only seem to have two options, one for
normal and the other for power saving.
I Called Dell and they say that there is no way to disable the Intel or AMD
graphics adaptors in the bios despite what the manual says, I have had two
sighted colleagues check in the bios as well and they are experienced i.t.
people, they can find no way to disable either of the graphics adaptors.
Do you have any idea about anything that I can try please, this is quite
frustrating as I use Microsoft Excel quite a lot.

Many thanks in anticipation,

You could try sound volume view and setup some voice profiles and create a
few hot keys to launch them.

Hi friends,

I Have my laptop set up so that the main system sounds go through the
docking station sound card and JAWS goes through the laptop internal

My question is that if I use the volume keys on my keyboard, they change the
master sound volume, is there a way to change the JAWS volume as well with
keyboard commands that goes through the second sound card?

Thanks again for the help, this may help with the dropouts on JAWS when using

2018-02-09 Thread Adrian Spratt
Wayne,

I assume that new versions of JAWS keep up with developments on the Web that
don't help sell a software product. That said, JAWS 2018 doesn't work with
certain messages in Outlook 2010 and fails to keep its place on certain (though
not all) Webpages. I've brought these two problems to the attention of VFO by
email, but they insist I call to seek solutions, even though others have
reported similar experiences on this list. I don't want to spend the time nor
risk getting one of VFO's less skilled tech service people, all for what I
believe would be a fool's errand.

You seem to be asking if it's worth keeping up with the biennial SMA. If you
can afford it, the answer is surely yes. Whether for 2018 or some other future
version, VFO's pricing system makes SMA's cheaper than buying JAWS all over
again. Also, although I've never come across VFO claims of security, it could
be another reason to keep up to date, as it is for all software.

Hi Mike,

I have access keys speaking set to All and Tutor Messages to Custom Messages
Only. However, I tried the Menus and Controls options but the issue is not
fixed.
It is expected that this setting doesn't fix this issue. This is because tutor
messages handles speaking of hints given by JAWS on how to operate the focused
control type with the keyboard; for example, when you are on a button and have
Tutor Messages to Menus and Controls, JAWS will say using the Tutor Message
voice: “To activate press space bar.”
These are JAWS-specific messages. Control descriptions are small help texts,
often just under the control name, which gives information on what a specific
control does and it's displayed on the screen. For example, when you are in the
Driver Update wizard for a device in Device Manager, the Search Driver Software
on your Computer button have a description telling “Search and install the
driver software manually,” and the button for check automatically tells
something longer about the searching on the computer and Windows Update unless
you disabled this in the device installation settings.

Thanks a lot!

Adrian, I see that you are using Windows 7 64bit as I am. Is there any reason
to use JAWS 2018? I still use JAWS 17.

Fernando,

Using your driver update example, I tried a couple of ideas on my system,
including seeing if the mouseover command would work. It didn't. However, the
words you indicate are missing from the control appear when I switch to the
JAWS cursor.

I'm using a 64-bit Windows 7 machine and right now the last release of JAWS 18.
I haven't tested this with 2018.

Hi Fernando,

In Jaws quick settings, Options / Basics try these 2 settings if you haven't
already. I know I asked this earlier, but I don't know which settings you
tried. Using the settings below produced extra Jaws verbiage, but I just don't
recall exactly what the control description is supposed to say.

Tutor Messages Announce Menu and Control Help radio button checked

Hi Mike,

Thank you for replying.
Yes, I checked both Quick Settings and the Settings Center for the active
verbosity level. In the active level, which is Beginner, I have checked the
Control Descriptions item, and changing between long or short messages produce
the same result on this problem.
Regarding Speech and Sounds Manager, I only changed the Classic scheme to make
different heading levels to play piano sounds. Even so, I tried reverting to
the original Classic scheme but, as I supposed, the problem is not fixed.
I also tried running JAWS in English to see if perhaps this is a specific issue
in the Spanish version (it wouldn't be the first time I must edit a translated
message missing a %1 or documentation which states things in an order different
to the actual one, for example), but this issue is also present in English.
I think this should be somewhat related to the FocusChangedEvent, but my
knowledge of event functions and scripting language in general is poor. As a
workaround I tried to add the SayControlDescription function in the
FocusChangedEvent, but it didn't worked at all.

Do you have some other ideas I can try?

Thanks in advance!

Hi

Instead of Modifying the default.jss and default.jsb files for a new script,
you could set up a keystroke to make the PrintScreen key be your applications
key. There is already a script in JAWS 17, 18, 2018 and possibly earlier to
invoke the applications key.

If you do not currently have a default.jkm file in your JAWS user folder,
create a new file with the full name of default.jkm in your JAWS user folder
and add the following lines:

[Common Keys]
PrintScreen=SendApplicationKey

If you already have a default.jkm file in your JAWS user folder just add the
line

PrintScreen=SendApplicationKey

In the [Common Keys]Section of the file.

It is dangerous to have a copy of the default.jsb file in your JAWS user
folder. Any JAWS update can install a new version of default.jsb that can make
your copy of that file useless. And has been pointed out, you can only use
that copy of default.jsb with the version and update that were used to save it.
But using a keystroke instead will be compatible with any version of JAWS.
Also the JKM file can be moved to any version of JAWS.

so-called "improvements" and alterations with new versions, it's just going to
end up being a headache maintaining the scripts over a period of years. You'd
just slowly lose functionality over-time. I've seen this happen with other

Hi Patti

No. If you set up the keystroke to make PrintScreen the applications key, you
will be able to use either the printscreen key or the applications key on your
laptop and the printscreen key on your wireless keyboard.

Hey Mike,
On my laptop is an application key, but on my wireless keyboard there is not an
application key, but a print screen there.
If I do the change, will it miss up the application key on the laptop?
Patti

PrintScreen=SendApplicationKey

If you already have a default.jkm file in your JAWS user folder just add the
line

PrintScreen=SendApplicationKey

Thanks for the help. I followed your directions and now seem to not be getting
the funky error messages.

Now, what do I do to get the printpage key to work like the application key? I
know that shift-f10 does that but I want to simulate the application key with a
single keystroke. I still have the script I added to the JFW 18 default
script. How do I get it into the 2018 default script?

Thanks.

you have to do one more thing to actually save the default.jss and default.jsb
files that you deleted.
you have to open the default.jss file and then open the pull down menu and use
save.
when you do the two files you mentioned will be saved in that folder where you
deleted them.
if you don't jaws will use the factory script files from the program
data\freedom scientific\scripts folder instead.

Hi Ralph,

Now that you told what you were doing, I can give you the exact fix.
When you modified the Default script file in JAWS 18 and pressed CTRL+S, Script
Manager saved the modified version in the JAWS user folder. When you imported
settings to JAWS 2018 the file was also saved in the JAWS 2018 user folder, but
since the file is from 18.0 and you didn't used the Use statement, the problem
is that JAWS 2018 is using the Default.jsb file based on JAWS 18.0.
To fix this, with JAWS closed, go to the following folder:
C:\Users\YourUser\AppData\Roaming\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\2018\Settings\Enu In
this folder, find and delete the files named Default.jss and Default.jsb, then
restart JAWS and the problem

Sure. I have been using NVDA too. nVDA works great with both new Firefox,
and, I guess, Edge too (though I haven't used that). But I'm not sure that
NVDA vs JAWS topics are welcome on this list. I made a thread when I first
started using NVDA asking about opinions and all was pretty quiet. I guess
that what we have here is some sort of rivalry. Practically, though, it
makes sense to use both screen-readers, if you can.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 2018 repair

2018-01-27 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi,

I didn't know JAWS already had a script that simulates this. It seems to be
designed for use with a touch screen.
Be aware that this script actually sends SHIFT+F10, not APPLICATIONS; but as I
said, usually there are no functionality differences.

PrintScreen=SendApplicationKey

If you already have a default.jkm file in your JAWS user folder just add the
line

PrintScreen=SendApplicationKey

C:\Users\YourUser\AppData\Roaming\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\2018\Settings\Enu In
this folder, find and delete the files named Default.jss and Default.jsb, then
restart JAWS and the problem should be resolved.

As a suggestion, if your keyboard hasn't the Applications key, you usually
won't need to make any modifications to get back that functionality into
another key. This is because Windows always had a keyboard shortcut for opening
context menus when your keyboard has not Applications key: you can just press
SHIFT+F10 and, except in less standard programs like games in full
SHIFT+screen mode,
you will see the same context menu. Similarly, if you're using a keyboard in
which there's no Windows key, you can quickly open the Start menu by pressing
CTRL+ESCAPE.

Hope it helps!

will be able to use either the printscreen key or the applications key on your

you have to do one more thing to actually save the default.jss and default.jsb
files that you deleted.
you have to open the default.jss file and then open the pull down menu and use
save.
when you do the two files you mentioned will be saved in that folder where you
deleted them.
if you don't jaws will use the factory script files from the program

C:\Users\YourUser\AppData\Roaming\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\2018\Settings\Enu In
this folder, find and delete the files named Default.jss and Default.jsb, then
restart JAWS and the problem should be resolved.

I tried the "save as shared" and it wouldn't let me.

I think this problem came up because my Jaws 18 default script was modified to
allow the printscreen to act like the application key since my laptop doesn't
have an application key. When I installed Jaws 2018 a couple months ago I had
it import my Jaws 18 settings.

The problem was that when I press the "printscreen" key, I got a message saying
something about an unknown call to script. Since I normally use a wireless
keyboard that has the application key I hadn't gotten around to trying to fix
things until this weekend. I opened the default script in the script manager.
It showed the modification I had made to my Jaws 18 default script. I saved
the 2018 script and exited the script manager. Now I'm getting the message
about the default script not being found.

I'm a script ignoramus so have no idea what to do. I would appreciate some
easy-to-follow instructions about what to do.

Thanks.

Unless you were modifying this file or installing scripts that make
modifications to it, this is rare.
However, if you can bring the file in Script Manager with CTRL+SHIFT+D, try
using the Save As Shared option in the File menu to see if recompiling the file
fixes the issue. This is because JAWS actually doesn't search the default.jss,

I've noticed that if I load a document into the virtual viewer (e.g., from
Adobe Reader or OCR results), then switch to another application (e.g.,
Microsoft Word), write some text, and finally switch with Alt+Tab back to
the virtual viewer, the virtual cursor is placed at the start of the
document rather than at the point where it was before. Editing/reading text
in another application seems to result in loss of the virtual cursor
position in the virtual viewer. This is more than mildly inconvenient when
trying to take notes from a document, for example.

Have others seen this, and is there a known solution?

I'm running JAWS 2018 1712.10 under Windows 10 1709 with the latest
Microsoft updates applied.

position in the virtual viewer. This is more than mildly inconvenient when
trying to take notes from a document, for example.

Have others seen this, and is there a known solution?

I'm running JAWS 2018 1712.10 under Windows 10 1709 with the latest

I've noticed that if I load a document into the virtual viewer (e.g., from
Adobe Reader or OCR results), then switch to another application (e.g.,
Microsoft Word), write some text, and finally switch with Alt+Tab back to
the virtual viewer, the virtual cursor is placed at the start of the

Hi,
This is currently not working with JAWS in Creators Update and later.
Certainly it was a problem with the first builds of CU, but Microsoft
already fixed them and even NVDA is working with this feature again.
I hope FS fix this for JAWS soon.

[JAWS-Users] JAWS 2018 and Pal Talk

2017-11-30 Thread Derek Czuy
Hello list members:

My friend has enjoyed using Pal Talk for quite some time. However, when she
recently updated it to the current version, the program became unusable with
JAWS 2018. Is the previous version of Pal Talk still available? If so, where
can it be downloaded from? Are there JAWS scripts available so that JAWS
2018 and the current version of Pal Talk can work together?

Thanks.

Jaws 2018 sluggishness on internet

Don’t know if sluggishness is quite right for what has been occurring with
Jaws 2018 and Windows 7 on the internet. I have been visiting the Epson,
Amazon and Staples Web sites the last few days and whenever you click on a
link Jaws goes silent for 15 or 20 seconds before resuming speech. Sometimes
I have to tab away from the page to get Jaws talking again. I think this
started with 2018. We also have a pc running Windows 10 and Jaws 2018 and it
does not have this problem. Anyone know what is going on with this issue?

[JAWS-Users] Jaws 2018, Firefox, and returning an audible book

2017-11-22 Thread Mary Otten
This message is directed at those folks who are using jaws 2018 with Firefox
and are audible subscribers. Audible offers the ability to return a book if you
don’t like it. When you are on the screen that is listing your audible orders,
and you press enter on a “return“ link associated with a given book, there is a
window that comes up within the window or, according to my sighted husband,
it’s sort of behind the window where the focus was. You can get to it with a
mouse, which is what he did. But I’m wondering if there is a way to put focus
on this window, which allows you to complete the return process. Ideally, when
you press enter on the “return“ link, jaws would focus on this new window where
you need to take action to complete the process.

Windows 7? Is it compatible with Magic 13? I haven't installed Magic 14.

Hi Miriam,

Yes J2018 will work perfectly fine on Windows 7, but the CD you received is
not the latest version of J2018. Use the appropriate direct download link
for your system from below to get the latest version. I can't answer the
Magic question.

An update, J2018.1710.42, has been released to fix the most recent Outlook
problem, a note about it is below the download links.

keys. All this tabbing is going to give me carpal tunnel syndrome. Smile. If
there are hot keys for things like sending a message et Cetera, how can I
access a list of same? Also, when in the message list, pressing enter on the
message with focus doesn’t always seem to result in being able to do a say
all with Jaws key Plus down arrow. It’s probably operator error, but it is
frustrating.

Hi all,

I have just joined this list with a new copy of JAWS 2018 installed on
a Windows 10 64-bit pc. It has been years since I used JAWS, so I'm the
next thing to a newby. I'm interested in the use of the Windows 10 mail
client with JAWS. Because of issues with the Edge browser, and the fact
that this mail app is apparently based on that engine, I am thinking
that it might not be all that great with JAWS until the underlying Edge
issues are fully solved. Is that true? I'd like to be wrong, as I
really don't think I need a mail app as complex as Outlook, which I
don't own in any case. Advice, please?

Respected Marry, the matter of fact is that using windows 10 mail app is very
easy and handy.
It will not give you tough time as outlook 2016.
Another very important thing is that David wrote a very good tutorial using
windows 10 mail app.
You can use this app no matter what brouser you are using as your default
brouser.
This program will work with the composition of people and calendar apps.
In my opinion, you will not find any issue if you use it with JAWS 2018.

really don't think I need a mail app as complex as Outlook, which I
don't own in any case. Advice, please?

Mary

I have noticed this also. Another work around to the outlook message is to
shift tab to the subject field then Jaws seems to grab proper focus.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 2018 and problems reading certain email and
keeping place in IE

Hi. Is anyone else having these problems with JAWS 2018?

Yesterday, I reported a solution to my problem in Outlook 2010 reading
messages that contain tables. Unfortunately, the fix is working only in some
cases. In most, I'm now finding that messages with tables can't be read.
I've had to revert to JAWS 18 to read them.

With IE11 and JAWS 2018, I lose my place on a webpage each time I go away
from it. It's especially annoying when I'm taking notes and need to switch
back and forth. For this reason also, I've had to revert to JAWS 18.
