Re: [JAWS-Users] New Avast Free 5.0 not accessible with Jaws.

2010-01-26 Thread Chris Hallsworth
On the machines I uninstalled Avast from, it was necessary to tab one or
two times, without speech, before uninstallation proceeds. The reason is
a dialogue box comes up, but JAWS can't access it. It is to do with the
self defence module. You need to do this quick or else the dialogue
assumes you don't want to turn it off and thus uninstallation fails.

I will have to disagree.
I have successfully un-installed Avast on several machines without the

Generally speaking, the trick to un-installing any program,
is to make sure the program is not running before attempting the un-install.
The ease of doing this may not be apparent if the software is running as a

Folks, the only way to successfully uninstall avast is by using their
removal tool. You will be told there was an error when uninstalling avast
when You attempt to do so threw the control panel. And it will still be
listed in Your list of programs as well as in the system tray. Also if You
attempt to delete the alwil Software folder it will tell You that access was
denied. You will have no choice but to use their removal tool. Which You can
find from their website at avast.com. Once again You must run this removal
tool in safe mode which renders jaws useless. So, You, will need sighted
assistance to complete this process. I have attempted to do all the steps
which Brian listed and was successful at doing them all. However avast still
remains when You attempt to uninstall it the normal way that You would
uninstall a program.

Hi list. I tried the new Avast 5.0 free version out on my PC this
morning,
found it inaccessible with Jaws because alwil Software has changed the
interface into a graphical interface, so I restored my computer using my
backup I created with Image for Windowswhich already had Avast 4 Home
Edition. Now, what I would like to do is uninstall Avast 4 Home Edition
and
use Microsoft Security Essentials instead. I have tried to uninstall
Avast
in the past, but it didn't completely uninstall and was still in the
system
tray when I rebooted. Right now I'm still using Avast 4 Home Edition and
Windows XP Professional SP3. I'm using Jaws 9.0, the latest build. I
have
downloaded alwil Software's uninstall utility, but I'm told I will need
to
use it in Safe Mode. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks a lot.

2010-01-26 Thread Gerald Levy

Don't hold your breath waiting for an accessible version of Avast to be
released. The bottom line is that as long as you are not using the latest
version because it is inaccessible, your security may be compromised. When
it comes to anti-virus programs, it is important to keep up to date to
minimize your risk of a malware attack. Obviously, the folks at Avast do
not take screen reader accessibility very seriously, or else they would make
it a top priority instead of offering an unspecified date sometime in the
future for a resolution. This is unconscionable. For those of you who
insist on hanging on to the last accessible version of this program, lotsa
luck. Just don't be surprised if your PC suffers a malware attack while you
wait (perhaps in vain) for a new accessible version to be released. And
while you're at it, ask these fine folks why they make it so difficult to
remove Avast. Are they afraid that you'll switch to one of their
competitors? Quite frankly, they should be, because the competition is
better. To be fair, I have never used Avast, mainly because I heard so many
horror stories about trying to uninstall it. So when my license for the
paid version of AVG 8.5 expired, I switched to MSE without even considering
Avast, and I'm glad I did.

a new accessible version to be released. And while you're at it, ask
these fine folks why they make it so difficult to remove Avast. Are they
afraid that you'll switch to one of their competitors? Quite frankly,
they should be, because the competition is better. To be fair, I have
never used Avast, mainly because I heard so many horror stories about
trying to uninstall it. So when my license for the paid version of AVG
8.5 expired, I switched to MSE without even considering Avast, and I'm
glad I did.

[JAWS-Users] New Avast Free 5.0 not accessible with Jaws.

2010-01-25 Thread Stanley Smith
Hi list. I tried the new Avast 5.0 free version out on my PC this morning,
found it inaccessible with Jaws because alwil Software has changed the
interface into a graphical interface, so I restored my computer using my
backup I created with Image for Windowswhich already had Avast 4 Home
Edition. Now, what I would like to do is uninstall Avast 4 Home Edition and
use Microsoft Security Essentials instead. I have tried to uninstall Avast
in the past, but it didn't completely uninstall and was still in the system
tray when I rebooted. Right now I'm still using Avast 4 Home Edition and
Windows XP Professional SP3. I'm using Jaws 9.0, the latest build. I have
downloaded alwil Software's uninstall utility, but I'm told I will need to
use it in Safe Mode. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks a lot.

Re: [JAWS-Users] New Avast Free 5.0 not accessible with Jaws.

2010-01-25 Thread Brian Lee
Hello Stanley,

Another list member had the same problem with uninstalling Avast. Here is
the information that I wrote concerning that situation. The steps below
should be done after you have disabled Avast through the context menu for
the system tray icon and done the normal uninstall process through the
control panel applet for add/remove or programs and features. Hopefully
uninstall will have worked for you after disabling Avast from the system
tray and uninstalling it with their tool or through the control panel
applet. However, if you still have problems then you might want to try the
following procedures.

Avast has about four services that start with your computer system. You can
see if they are still listed in your services and if so then disable them.

1. Press Windows key with R to bring up the run dialog box.
2. Type in services.msc without the quotes and press enter key. Wait a
few seconds for the list of services to appear. When they are in view then
you will be in the tree view of local services. If that doesn't bring up
the list of services then you might need to type in CMD and press enter at
the run prompt and then when you get a command prompt type in services.msc
and press enter key.
3. Use tab key to move into your list of services.
4. use down arrow until you find an Avast service. Services are listed
alphabetically.
5. When you find an Avast service then use application key and arrow up to
the properties choice and press enter key.
6. Use tab key to the startup type combo box and use down arrow to the
disable choice. Tab to an apply button if present or the OK button and
press enter key.
7. When back in the list of services use down arrow and perform the same
actions on any services that start with the Avast name.

You might also want to check the run areas of your registry. If you work in
the registry be very careful not to make any other changes as there is no
opportunity to save or undo changes you make.

1. Bring up the run dialog box by using Windows key with R.
2. Type in regedit and press enter key.
3. You should be in a tree view of the registry hierarchy. If you are in a
list view then use shift tab to move into the tree view. In the hierarchy
you open a level by using right arrow key and close a level by using left
arrow key. Use left arrow in the tree structure until you hear my computer
open.
4. Use down arrow to HKEY_CurrentUser and use right arrow to open the
level.
5. Press S or S O until you find the software choice and right arrow to
open the level.
6. Press M or M I to move to Microsoft and open the level.
7. Press W or W I until you get to the Windows choice and use right arrow
key to open the level.
8. Press C to move to the current version choice and open the level.
9. Press the letters R U until you find the Run choice and then use tab
to the list view.
10. Use up or down arrow keys to find any references to Avast and delete
them using the delete key and answering confirmation prompts.
11. Use shift+tab back to the tree structure and arrow down to the next
choice that starts with run.
12. use tab into the list and check for any Avast entries. Delete them if
you find them.
13. Continue to move between the tree and list views using tab and
shift+tab keys. Check the list view for any Avast entries for any
entries in the tree structure that start with the word run including
RunOnce, Run Services, etc.
14. Move back in the tree view using left arrow key until my computer
open is found.
15. Use down arrow key to HKEY_Local Machine and open it.
16. Follow the same steps as you did for the current user hive, deleting
any references to Avast in the run boxes.

Also delete the Alwil software folder in program files, (that is a l w I l).

CCleaner also has a uninstall tool that might help. In the CCleaner window
use tab to the tools button and press spacebar or enter key. Use tab to the
uninstall button and press spacebar. Use tab to the list of programs and
down arrow to Avast. Tab to the uninstaller button and press spacebar.
Follow prompts.

In CCleaner you can also open tools as mentioned above and use the start up
button to show a list of startup processes. Tab to the list after using
start up button. Each entry is marked as yes or no meaning whether or
not they should start with Windows. Use down arrow through the list to find
any Avast choices. If you find one then tab to the delete button and use
it.

I needed to uninstall Avast to effectively run a program called autorun
eater to remove a virus from my Ipod. I discovered mostly by accident that
if you highlight Avast in the system tray and hit the application key there
are several areas to terminate avast. for example, there is a stop on
access protection control, stop protection submenu and other items. When I
went into these menu options I was able to terminate Avast and then I was
able to uninstall avast in add/remove in the XP control panel.

2010-01-25 Thread Sean Paul

I sent a note off to the Avast people this morning, regarding the apparent
lack of screen reader support in version 5. My guess is that the version 4
product is going to be supported for some time to come, so I don't think
there needs to be a mass rush to remove Avast. I am going to sit back and
see if they are receptive to making changes that will allow screen reader
access.

Over the past several years, I have grown very fond of the Avast product. I
will say that I do have MSE installed on one of my computers and it is also
a very good solution.

On an unrelated note, many of our customers computers have AVG installed.
During the past month, we have seen an alarming number of viruses that AVG
is letting through. We have been removing AVG and installing either Avast
or MSE, with very good results.

I will post any response that I receive from Avast. It may help if other
screen reader users also drop them a note. Send it to: supp...@avast.com.

The problem with not updateing to the latest version of Avast (or any other

Apparently, the fine folks at Avast don't really care about us blind

MSE is Microsoft Security Essentials, a free antimalware solution that
includes free real-time protection and even the ability to schedule
on-demand scans. It should work with older version of JAWS But ai am not

2010-01-25 Thread Gerald Levy

MSE stands for Microsoft Security Essentials, the free real-time anti-virus,
anti-malware program from MS that is fully JAWS accessible and a breeze to
use. Because of its simple interface, it should work with earlier versions
of JAWS.

[JAWS-Users] comments on JAWS-Users] New Avast Free 5.0 not accessible with Jaws.

2010-01-25 Thread Shane Hecker
First, let me say I did check out the new avast and it does have some
significant problems. This led to me uninstalling and going with mse. Avast
is not totally inaccessible, but some important dialog boxes are. You can
use the mouse and navigate most of the dialog boxes in avast. This is a far
cry from previous versions where you could use tab and shift tab, but it is
still doable. What caused me to go forward with the uninstall are the
dialogs that pop up when, for example, you disable the protection through
the context menu. These are totally inaccessible. I had to guess where the
buttons were. So yes, it is inaccessible in some key parts. But is it
totally unusable? The answer is if you know how to use the mouse (jaws
cursor) then no. Part of the problem is that jaws thinks every button is a
dialog box. Hope this helps someone.

I will have to disagree.
I have successfully un-installed Avast on several machines without the
removal tool.
Generally speaking, the trick to un-installing any program,
is to make sure the program is not running before attempting the un-install.
The ease of doing this may not be apparent if the software is running as a
service.

I will have to disagree.
I have successfully un-installed Avast on several machines without the
removal tool.
Generally speaking, the trick to un-installing any program,
is to make sure the program is not running before attempting the
un-install.

Also if You
attempt to delete the alwil Software folder it will tell You that access
was
denied. You will have no choice but to use their removal tool. Which You
can
find from their website at avast.com. Once again You must run this removal
tool in safe mode which renders jaws useless. So, You, will need sighted
assistance to complete this process. I have attempted to do all the steps
which Brian listed and was successful at doing them all. However avast
still
remains when You attempt to uninstall it the normal way that You would

 I will have to disagree.
I have successfully un-installed Avast on several machines without the
 removal tool.
Generally speaking, the trick to un-installing any program,
is to make sure the program is not running before attempting the un-install.
The ease of doing this may not be apparent if the software is running as a
 service.

First off, thanks for the information on avast's version 5 accessibility.
Second, You're correct in that You will have to use the uninstall tool in
safe mood which makes jaws unusable. You will need sighted assistance to
 complete this project.

 have
downloaded alwil Software's uninstall utility, but I'm told I will need
 to
 use

Its $39.99 for 1 year and $74.99 for 2 years.
I know there are less expensive programs out there but I have never had
 any
virus or spyware of any type wile using this program.
And it works flawlessly with Jaws.
