Lisa,

Once JAWS 9 is released, you would then have to purchase version 9 when
you upgrade. If you order 8 now with and SMA (that means you'll also
receive 9 and version 10), you end up paying the same price and will
ultimately get version 10 as well.

So your question is, how long before 9 is released...

We have been targeting a release date in late September but that has
slipped a bit already. We are completing some significant changes with
respect to Microsoft Office including the calendar and getting this all
wrapped up is taking longer than I had hoped. Since this is delaying
JAWS 9 a bit, you will have more time to delay the purchase but I would
not let it go past September in order to take advantage of the savings.

Hope that helps,
Eric

 Lisa,
The first question you (and the sales person I think) should ask, is
about your current computer situation and what will you be doing in
the
future with respect to computing. If you are on windows XP today, and
plan to be using the computer in the future, you will probably be
upgrading to IE 7 at the very least. For that reason, staying current
with your Screen Reader will be important. If you plan to buy a new
computer in the next year or two, you will probably be getting Vista
and
in that case, I suggest you buy JAWS 8 now and get the SMA. That would
give you all the features in JAWS 7 and 8 your are missing out on now
and set you up to begin using Vista as soon as you can. Purchasing
before JAWS 9 releases this Fall will say you money as well in the
long
 run.

If on the other hand you are using Windows 98 with IE 6 today, and
your
not planning to change anytime soon, then I would suggest you only get
upgraded to JAWS 6.2 (available for free to JAWS 6 license holders,
from
 the Downloads page at FS).

A couple of the highlights worth considering include:
 * Support for Vista Operating System.
 * All the DAISY Training material and the DAISY Player now installed
with JAWS 7 and 8 versions.
 * The RealSpeak Synthesizer that is included with JAWS 8, mentioned by
 others.
 * The new Alternative Say All option so you can use Eloquence for
navigating but have RealSpeak or other SAPI Synthesizer kick in when
you
 start a Say All.
 * The FS Clipboard so you can append to clipboard rather than over
writing it. This is great on Web pages I think.
 * The Check for Updates feature in the Help Menu.
 * Navigation Quick Keys for Microsoft Word, like you have available in
 IE.
 * The JAWS Find feature now retains the history of the searches you
perform to make it easier to recall.
 * AOL, MSN, and Yahoo instant messenger programs are all improved.
Well, you get the idea. If you install the Demo version of JAWS 8, you
can review all the What's New write ups, try out the DAISY Training
material, and give it a test drive at least.

I am using JAWS8.0 successfully, as are many others on the list here. JAWS8
has the extra RealSpeak Solo Synth voices included on its CD, which offer a
nice alternative (if one wants one) in say-all. For Internet Explorer 7
(with its enhanced access to RSS newsfeeds and podcasts) you're best with
JAWS8 for now. I think the Skim Reading feature was also enhanced slightly.

I have JAWS 8.0, and have had no problems running it on Windows XP as
well as Vista. I am rather surprised though that an FS person would
call you trying to sell you an upgrade, though.

personally, if you're happy with what you have then there's no reason to
upgrade. I used JAWS 6.0 until 8.0 came out, and the only reason I
upgraded was because of the Real Speak voices and the accessabillity of
AOL Instant Messenger which is huge for me. It all comes dowwn to this:
Are the features that 8.0 offers that important to you?

Hope this helps,

Re: [JAWS-Users] Opinion wanted, should I upgrade my jaws?

2007-08-23 Thread Lisa
Hi Eric,
thank you for that bit of information. How long do I have to get jaws 8?
I'm really considering upgrading because I have Microsoft office student and
home edition 2007 on my computer, and I'm having a hard time using it with
my jaws 6.
Take care,
Lisa

 Lisa,
The first question you (and the sales person I think) should ask, is
about your current computer situation and what will you be doing in the
future with respect to computing. If you are on windows XP today, and
plan to be using the computer in the future, you will probably be
upgrading to IE 7 at the very least. For that reason, staying current
with your Screen Reader will be important. If you plan to buy a new
computer in the next year or two, you will probably be getting Vista and
in that case, I suggest you buy JAWS 8 now and get the SMA. That would
give you all the features in JAWS 7 and 8 your are missing out on now
and set you up to begin using Vista as soon as you can. Purchasing
before JAWS 9 releases this Fall will say you money as well in the long
 run.

If on the other hand you are using Windows 98 with IE 6 today, and your
not planning to change anytime soon, then I would suggest you only get
upgraded to JAWS 6.2 (available for free to JAWS 6 license holders, from
 the Downloads page at FS).

A couple of the highlights worth considering include:
 * Support for Vista Operating System.
 * All the DAISY Training material and the DAISY Player now installed
with JAWS 7 and 8 versions.
 * The RealSpeak Synthesizer that is included with JAWS 8, mentioned by
 others.
 * The new Alternative Say All option so you can use Eloquence for
navigating but have RealSpeak or other SAPI Synthesizer kick in when you
 start a Say All.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Opinion wanted, should I upgrade my jaws?

2007-08-23 Thread Eric Damery

Hope that helps,
Eric

Hi Lisa,

I have JAWS 8.0, and have had no problems running it on Windows XP as
well as Vista. I am rather surprised though that an FS person would
call you trying to sell you an upgrade, though.

personally, if you're happy with what you have then there's no reason to
upgrade. I used JAWS 6.0 until 8.0 came out, and the only reason I
upgraded was because of the Real Speak voices and the accessabillity of
AOL Instant Messenger which is huge for me. It all comes dowwn to this:
Are the features that 8.0 offers that important to you?

Hope this helps,
Michael

Internet explorer if that's you're browser and jaws eight works so much
better with it then six. Or firefox dependingon what your prefference is

Re: [JAWS-Users] Opinion wanted, should I upgrade my jaws?

2007-08-22 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Siobhan,

Just to let you know, no one needs to upgrade IE 6 to 7. This is completely
optional, and is not required to run Windows.

What I'm trying to say is if you are going to upgrade Jaws just because you
think you need to upgrade Internet Explorer, it wouldn't be worth it.

I have been using Jaws 7 since it's release, and I am quite happy with it.
I am using Windows XP home on my laptop, and Xp Pro on my desktop, both
running Jaws 7 and I have no issues revolving around Internet Explorer or
it's components.

One thing I have noticed is that Jaws 7 is much more stable than other
versions of Jaws I have ever run, and find it to be much more accessible
with other programs than previous versions, as well.

I have been reading all the trouble others have had with the various updates
of Jaws 8, and have found that I would have more problems if I upgraded to
Jaws 8, than if I stayed with my Jaws 7 and kept going the way I am now.

Just my two cents worth.

Victor

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Opinion wanted, should I upgrade my jaws?

 Hello everyone,
I am currently using jaws 6.0. A sails person from Freedom Scientific
called and left a message on my answering machine wanting to know if I
would like to upgrade to jaws 8.0. I'm just trying to figure out if it
would be worth spending the money to upgrade to jaws 8.0. Personally I
don't know anyone using jaws 8.0, so I can't ask specific questions about
it. What things are different in jaws 8.0? What new programs does jaws
8.0 support? I did hear that you can use Yahoo messenger with 8.0, but
I'm not sure. I would like to use Yahoo messenger, but I don't want to
spend that kind of money just to use it. I guess I'm just looking for
opinions, do you all think it is worth it to upgrade from jaws 6.0 to jaws
8.0? I am running windows XP home. Any feed back on this would be
 greatly appreciated!
 Take care,
 Lisa

Re: [JAWS-Users] Opinion wanted, should I upgrade my jaws?

2007-08-22 Thread Siobhan
Hi Lisa. No yo don't Have to upgrade, I recommend it because for one thing,
when you're on a secure site like say amazon.com, you will be told secure
connection when you g to input things like your email, password, and things
like that. sure IEhas a few bugs but wht progam doesn't? You're welcome to
stay with six, but soon I think you won't have a coice and unless you want
to hide the updates in windows update, the best thing to do is just upgrade
at least IE. Now if you want other programs to work, with jaws eight find
upgrade but victor
s right, don't just for the sake of internet explorer. I personally have
had o problems, and think the latest version unlesss it's very buggy is the
way to go.

Lisa, absolutely upgrade Jaws. For one thing, you'll need to update
Internet explorer if that's you're browser and jaws eight works so much
better with it then six. Or firefox dependingon what your prefference is
but yes I would upgrade. I don't know about Yahoo since I hate that
program, but who knows because they comeout with a new version and whatwe
have won't work, i'm speaking in general but yes upgrade jaws. If you
 need
 anything please ask.

 Hi Siobhan,

Just to let you know, no one needs to upgrade IE 6 to 7. This is
 completely
optional, and is not required to run Windows.

What I'm trying to say is if you are going to upgrade Jaws just because
 you
think you need to upgrade Internet Explorer, it wouldn't be worth it.

I have been reading all the trouble others have had with the various
 updates
of Jaws 8, and have found that I would have more problems if I upgraded to
Jaws 8, than if I stayed with my Jaws 7 and kept going the way I am now.

 Just my two cents worth.

 Victor

Re: [JAWS-Users] Opinion wanted, should I upgrade my jaws?

2007-08-22 Thread Crabb, Nolan
I sure don't want to complicate matters any further, but if JAWS 9 is
somewhere on the not-too-distant horizon, and if you can hold out until
whenever that release comes, if at all soon, then is that a better way
to go?

I can't answer that for you; and I don't know anything about any pending
releases of JAWS 9. But it's something to think about.

Of course the other side of my argument is that there will always be
another upgrade down the road, and if you wait and wait and wait, you'll
not only pay more, as the list moderator reminded us, you'll deprive
yourself of any advantages that using the current version might offer.

I guess my short answer would be, if you have a compelling reason, do
the upgrade. Otherwise, maybe not yet. What's a compelling reason? Of
course, that's different with us all. For people who use Outlook 2007,
a compelling reason for an upgrade might be that a new version of JAWS
gives you better and more access to the Outlook 2007 calendar. But if
you're getting the information you need and using the software you need,
and if money's at all tight going into the holidays or whatever, maybe
holding out for now isn't such a bad idea. Ultimately, it's such a
personal decision that none of us are going to be able to help as much
as you or we would like.

2007-08-22 Thread Denny Huff
Yes, that is correct.
Let's say you are licensed for Jaws version 5 and you upgrade to version 8.
You will need to purchase 2 SMA's to cover versions 6,7 and 8. Then that
will still give you one more upgrade for version 9.

trying to sell you an upgrade, though.

personally, if you're happy with what you have then there's no reason to
upgrade. I used JAWS 6.0 until 8.0 came out, and the only reason I upgraded
was because of the Real Speak voices and the accessabillity of AOL Instant
Messenger which is huge for me. It all comes dowwn to this: Are the
features that 8.0 offers that important to you?

Hope this helps,
Michael

 Take care,
 Lisa
