Re: [JAWS-Users] Problems Accessing Amazon.com

2014-07-23 Thread Gerald Levy

It turns out that the reason I couldn't locate the search edit field on the
Amazon.com home page using firefox 29 was because I was using an outdated
version of JAWS, JAWS 9. When I switched to the demo version of JAWS 13, as
well as NVDA, I was able to easily locate it by pressing E, as with IE.
Apparently Amazon has made changes to its interface that older versions of
JAWS do not recognize.

When I acceess Amazon through my Firefox 30, it is just where it is in IE.
Which is right below the section where you access My Account, My Cart,
and I don't know why, but the Go button is now above the search field. But
Amazon works fine through the Firefox that I have installed on my computer,
just as it does through Internet Explorer 11. It is Amazon's design changes
that have screwed up their web site. As for you not being able to find the
search field at all, I am sorry, but I don't know.

[JAWS-Users] Problems Accessing Amazon.com

2014-07-22 Thread Gerald Levy

Recently, I have begun to experience problems accessing Amazon.com using IE 8
with JAWS 9 (or JAWS 13 in demo mode, for that matter) and XP. If I type a
search phrase into the search edit field on the Amazon.com home page, the
search results page comes up just fine. But sometimes, when I click on one of
the search results to learn more about a particular product, JAWS suddenly goes
silent, and the page does not load completely. I then have to launch NVDA to
close the stuck page with Windows Task Manager, which usually, but not always
restores JAWS to speech. Once JAWS starts speaking again , I can unload NVDA.
If I try to access Amazon.com using Firefox 29, I cannot locate any search edit
field on the home page like I can with IE. Indeed, with Firefox, there appears
to be no search edit field at all on the Amazon.com home page, and the only way
to access a search field is to click on the link for accessing the version of
Amazon.com optimized for screen readers. But I don't l
ike this optimized version of Amazon.com, because the results page leaves out
a lot of information I am interested in, like overall review ratings for each
product. Is there any way to locate the search edit field on the Amazon.com
home page using Firefox, or otherwise access the same normal home page with
Firefox that comes up when I access it with IE? Thanks for any feedback.

I have occasionally had the same issue with Amazon and Jaws, where the page

well.

Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one having problems with Amazon.com. I do a
lot of shopping there, and the JAWS hanging problem is turning into a major
nuisance. When I access Amazon.com using Firefox 29, the first link at the
top of the home page is for accessing the version of Amazon.com optimized
for screen readers. But whether I press E, or scroll down from the top of
the page using the down arrow key, I cannot locate any search edit field.
There are plenty of links for products that Amazon is trying to push, along
with links to products I have recently viewed, but no way to search for a
particular product of interest. I suspect that Firefox recognizes JAWS and
automatically suppresses the normal home page to force screen reader users
to access the optimized home page on which there is a search edit field.
But as I stated earlier, the optimized version of Amazon.com for screen
readers leaves a lot to be desired.

It's also available in JAWS 14. It can be a bit tricky to use, so I'd look at
the JAWS help file to get started. I think Jonathon Mosen also did an FS cast
segment on it.

However you access the feature with inser + space bar and then the letter x.

Gerald, just one comment. I use the version of Amazon for screen readers, as
I refuse to go through all that was just described. For each product I
choose there is a link for customer reviews and I read all of them, so I
don't imnderstand your comment about not having product reviews, they are
there. It can be a bit scanty on some info for some things, that is true,
but so far for what I buy it is fine for me and better for my blood

Recently, I have begun to experience problems accessing Amazon.com using
IE 8 with JAWS 9 (or JAWS 13 in demo mode, for that matter) and XP. If I

type a search phrase into the search edit field on the Amazon.com home
page, the search results page comes up just fine. But sometimes, when I
click on one of the search results to learn more about a particular
product, JAWS suddenly goes silent, and the page does not load
completely. I then have to launch NVDA to close the stuck page with
Windows Task Manager, which usually, but not always restores JAWS to
speech. Once JAWS starts speaking again , I can unload NVDA. If I try
to access Amazon.com using Firefox 29, I cannot locate any search edit
field on the home page like I can with IE. Indeed, with Firefox, there
appears to be no search edit field at all on the Amazon.com home page,
and the only way to access a search field is to click on the link for
accessing the version of Amazon.com optimized for screen readers. But I
don't like this optimized version of Amazon.com, because the results page

leaves out a lot of information I am interested in, like overall review
ratings for each product. Is there any way to locate the search edit
field on the Amazon.com home page using Firefox, or otherwise access the
same normal home page with Firefox that comes up when I access it with
 IE? Thanks for any feedback.

2014-07-22 Thread Gerald Levy

Yes, the customer reviews are listed on the details page for each product
returned on the results page using the screen reader-optimized version of
Amazon.com. But the results page itself does not contain overall review
ratings for each product, like on the normal version of Amazon.com. So
there is no quick way to get an idea of a product's rating without clicking
on its details page for more information, which is a royal pain. And the
optimized version only contains five results per page, and there is no way
to increase this number. Finally, the optimized version does not have
headings for each product on the results page, which makes navigation
somewhat more cumbersome. Although the optimized version of Amazon.com is
certainly usable, it is not really useful for my purposes, and I much prefer
the normal, full version.

All these suggestions are well and good, but can someone tell me where the
heck the search edit field is located on the Amazon.com home page that comes
up using Firefox? I have tried to locate it nine ways to Sunday without
success. I hate the optimized version of Amazon.com for screen readers,
which by the way, also happens to be the mobile version of Amazon.com for
cell phone users. Very frustrating.

Also, if you have access to the Flexible Web feature in newer version of
Jaws using it to clean up the Amazon page helps a lot. This is what I did
to

get rid of all those advertisement frames and sponsored links and other
unnecessary clutter. This makes it much easier to get around Amazon.

Hi,

I am using Jaws 15 and Internet Explorer 11. However, I surmise that these
tips may be helpful with other versions of both Jaws and Internet
Explorer.

I cannot speak for Firefox, however, because I do not have it installed on
either one of my Windows 7 sixty four bit computers.

First of all, Amazon has begun to crowd it's pages with far too much
information. Between flash and graphical buttons and links it is very
difficult sometimes to navigate to the place you want to go.

The past forty days I have been updating our two bedroom two bathroom
apartment and I have been ordering items from Amazon almost every day. I
use

the following navigational guidelines to speed up my browsing.

First, knowing that there will be about 350 links on the page including
pictures, I give it a chance to load. Then I press e to put me the
search

dialog box. Once I type my keyword for which I am searching. For example
dining table. I give it another chance to load another page of too many
links and pictures and graphics after I have pressed enter. Now to the
individual who posed this question, I am not attempting to insult your
intelligence with baby steps. I am giving detailed instructions for anyone
who wants them but who is not as experienced with jaws or with Internet
Explorer as you no doubt are. Smile!

Anyway once this page of search results has been loaded I narrow down my
results because I am a Prime user. Even if you do not have Prime you can
benefit by the same keystrokes. I hit h2 and this will take me over to
heading 2 where Jaws will voice a selection of options that Amazon has
such
as Prime or if I do not want to eliminate Prime shipping I can further
down

arrow and choose other options such as add ons or color choices or price
limits and so on. I can press enter on each choice and each time give
Amazon

a few seconds for the page to load and then press h to cycle through my
options instead of arrowing through the very noisy page of hundreds of
links

that sometimes freezes Jaws or even Internet Explorer.

Once I have found an item I want to look at more closely for example a
specific dining table I press enter and the page for that table will load
with another 200 links including pictures and graphical links. I can also
use the h to skip a bunch of amazon pushes for everything from Kindle
unlimited to Kindle fire to amazon phone etc. This will speed me through
the

adds for what others who looked at this choice eventually purchased to the
reviews and the technical specifications which I really want to see and I
can go right to the combo box where I can select more than one of this
item

and then arrow right down to add to cart.

This also allows me to skip their new little trick where they put one
click

purchasing right below add to cart so that will get turned on and they can
sell me stuff automatically without me even knowing it if I am not very
careful.

And once I am done instead of playing around with the b over and over
where they try to sell me tons of other stuff that is claimed to be
related
to what I just bought which is a bunch of crap
