Hi Randy? avast isn’t screenreader accessible, I would recommend vipre
antivirus, or vipre internet security! that’s what most of us are using, and
it’s a payed antivirus program, but it’s worth it, because it’s screenreader
friendly! on the other hand, it’s totally up to you!

Just installed the newest free version of AVAST using Jaws 16 and Win7/HP.
According to write ups, it is supposed to be screen reader accessible. Not
on this computer, or am I really doing something wrong.
No menus, no tools, no help.
Any thoughts please appreciated.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Avast Issues

2015-01-09 Thread Mike Boyd

Lynn,

The best way you are going to accomplish this is to restart your computer.
Then, go immediately to Computer, then open your C drive and navigate to
Program Files (X86)/Avast and find the uninstall file. Run this to uninstal
the program from your computer. Do not use Programs and Features in the
Control Panel, it will only remove portions of the program, making it even
harder to get rid of. If the uninstall file does not remove the program, you
will then need to go to the Avast web site, and download their removal tool,
and try running it to do the job. It is possible that even this will not
work, in which case, I recommend calling Microsoft Accessibility Support at
800-936-5900 to get one of the support agents to remove the program from
your computer.

Mike

and uninstall Avast from your computer. It is not accessible, and it will
make your computer crazy. If Programs and Features cannot remove the
program, which is likely

[JAWS-Users] Avast updates not speaking

2013-07-08 Thread DERICK GREEFF
Hi List

I run two computers; one with XP and JAWS 10 and one with Windows 7 and JAWS
13.

Both have the same version of Avast but the one on the windows XP machine
announces the daily updates and the windows 7 machine not.

I've checked that both machines receive the updates at the same time of the
day.

I've played around with the Windows 7 and JAWS 13 machine's verbosity
settings but this does not make any change so far. Does anyone perhaps know
what the reason can be that the windows 7 machine does not announce the
updates?

5 open with right arrow select one of the sounds and tab and enter on the

When I used to use Avast that occasionally happened. You can cure it by
going into the update area of Avast, and updating the program. Then, they

[JAWS-Users] avast sounds

2010-09-21 Thread john
I'm sorry if this appears as duplicate of a message just sent but it did not
appear in my sent folder so I am not sure if it was sent properly.
Basically I am using avast 5.0.594 free edition, and the avast sounds seem to
have disappeared when I check them in my sounds tab in control panel. The
program no longer tells me verbally that the virus difinition database has
updated. Windows sounds are working and avast is updating automatically when I
manually check it. Has anyone else had this problem and does anyone know where
the sound folder is located? I am using vista. Thanks

Hi. There's a neat shareware program someone posted about on this list

I used it to remove AVAST and installed MSE and don't have any lingering

Re: [JAWS-Users] avast

2010-09-08 Thread David

Hello Joe;

well, I also tried the suggestion, App remover, I found the program did
not remove all of the avast files.
I tried the program 3 times, however, each time I restarted my computer,
avast was running in my system tray.
also, I tried, going to msconfig and unchecking the program in startup,
however, it kept showing in the system tray, and, for some strange reason,
each time I went back to, msconfig, I found the start avast at startup was
rechecked.

I finally went to msconfig,/start up services, and, stopped it from running
their.

when I restarted computer, I then had to clean out the registry.

it wasn't an easy chore to rid myself of the avast5.exe.

2010-09-07 Thread Steve

Try downloading a program called appremover from appremover.com.

It will list any security software on your computer, like Avast. Just make
sure it highlights Avast and it will remove it. If it doesn't see Avast,
then try re-installing it and have Appremover remove it.

I think you have some vestige of Avast still resident in your registry.

Hi Don.

I am using the free Avast Antivirus 5, and it works fine.

I have only had diffaculties with changing the tab, when i am in the first
level of the the setting screen, where it was nessesary to use the jaws
cursor, to change the tab to the register tab, so i could get the one year
free subscription.

The sound for when Avast has finished an update process, has changed, so the
first four-five times it came, i thought that it was an alarm from avast, so
probably this standard sound should be changed to another, or after a time,
it is ok.

[JAWS-Users] avast was Re: microsoft essential

2010-08-17 Thread Mobeen Iqbal
Subject changed, hmm, that's an interesting point, one which i'll agree
with you on. i disabled avast checking my emails for viruses because i
generally only open them from people i can trust, and they're already
being scanned by gmail.

Hello!

One big problem is, if Avast finds something, the system locks and
without sighted help I cannot choose to ignore or quarantene the File in
wich avast has found something. I don't like MSSE, because I have the
feeling that it slows my computer down more than avast does, but at
least I can do all my tasks myself without sighted help.

And, Avast has deleted mails because Avast did find something in it. The
problem is, there was nothing to find. It was just a text file from a
german computer magazine that Avast has falsely identified as a virus.
So, how useful can a AV program be, if it does not let me have the final
decision? No, I don't like MSSE, but it does, what it should be doing
and is much more accessible than the latest Avast 5.

Just my opinion.

Regards!
Kamil

Avast's removal process has vastly improved from version 4.8, can you
positively state its not better than MSEE if you haven't tried their
latest version? if you have, then that's just your opinion, its
enough for me that i have to use microsoft's software for daily
tasks, i'll refrane from using their anti virus packages as well
purely because if they do inadvertantly break something which they're
almost certainly bound to do at some point just like they've done in
the past, then i'm not being lumbered with an unnecissary problem.
Avast has got me out of quite a few holes that many other anti-virus
checkers haven't been able to, i spend my time testing various
checkers this is what i base my opinions on, and user feedback as
well. As i said i don't wish to become involved in a debate, each to
his own if you're happy with what you use then good for you.

To say Avast has gone out of its way to make its anti-virus program
blind accessible is laughable. It may well be more accessible now
than it was previously, but it is still not as blind friendly as
MSE. If Avast really wanted to make its program blind friendly, they
would make it easy to remove without having to jump through hoops.
In some cases, you need to reboot into safe mode to completely
remove it, which is impossible without sighted help. How blind
friendly is this? That's why I never considered Avast for my
anti-virus program of choice. Until someone can produce test results
demonstrating that it is clearly superior to MSE at malware
detection, I'll stick with the latter.

In my opinion yes, alot more people are using it as opposed to
microsoft security essentials. I just don't like to put all my eggs
in 1 basket, and avast have gone out of their way to make their
products accessible for the blind, and in my opinion any company
that takes the time out for the blind especially for a free product
deserves respect.

[JAWS-Users] Avast and GMail fix

2010-07-10 Thread Mobeen Iqbal

Hi.

Further to the previous discussions on this topic, i've been testing the
latest version of avast 5.0.594 over the last week and putting together
a list of issues to be fixed. one of the issues people were having is
the scanning of emails for viruses using avast, specifically when
sending email via the gmail service. As most email providers such as
GMail offer virus scanning when emails are received or sent at their
end, for the time being if using gmail you can safely disable the mail
scanning feature of avast. for the more technical among you, it appears
that gmail have changed their certificate settings when using SSL over
the last couple of weeks, so i'm assuming that avast need to do some
more testing before allowing the gmail IP addresses through their
scanner etc.

Here's how to disable the shield.

1. go to ad/remove programs and highlight the avast 5.0 free anti virus
option. Note: i have not provided instructions for accessing add/remove
programs here as too many people have too many different configurations,
but email if you don't know how and i'll be happy to ablije.

2. click on the change option or change/remove in windows xp.
3. when the avast installation window is displayed, highlight the change
option in the list with the arrows and click on next.
4. when the changes screen is displayed, find the mail shield option
with the arrows, and press space to untick it. then, click on next.
5. the email shield will be uninstalled. click on finish to restart your
computer to save changes.

This issue doesn't seem to be affecting other email providers hotmail,
aol etc, though i could be wrong. Its only because GMail use a secure
connection to send your emails.

I hope this has been of some help to people while avast get the issue
fixed. they do know about it, so hopefully it'll be fixed soon.

2010-07-05 Thread Ishe Chinyoka

Hi,
I once experienced frustration with Avast in the same way: but you can't
delete it from the Explorer.

Go to your Add/Remove programs in the Control Panel.
When you get the Avast item from the listbox, select Remove.

Now from this point on, Avast uses the logic that no sane person other than
a malware would choose to remove it. So it displays a countdown timer with
the question: Are you sure you would like to remove Avast? (n=30...)
Unfortunately, this message seems not to be accessible using JAWS in this
latest Avast edition, so you must use the JAWS cursor.
Place your cursor on the Yes part of it and simulate a left mouse button
click to dismiss the message before the end of 30 seconds. If you are slow,
it will tell you that uninstallation couldn't complete due to an error.

Right now I prefer Microsoft Essentials or Eset Nod32 which I find their
interfaces accesible.

Wish you the best.

 Hi All.

Thanks to roger for tipping me off about this! Avast 5.0.594 now seems
to be fully accessible with screen readers. progress bars are now
spoken, as well as all of the interface. scans are now read out in
realtime as they should be, providing the user with information you'd
probably have had to use the jaws curser for. pressing tab and shift
tab seems to be sufficient to navigate, in other words using standard
navigational keystrokes gets you to the information you want to reach.
the only flaw i've noticed is the settings dialogue, for screen reader
users its read out correctly, but the tabs aren't immediately
noticeable. you have to press space on the settings button, then tab,
then shift tab until jaws doesn't say anything when shift tab is
pressed e.g tab, gaming mode. shift tab, gaming mode settings. shift
tab. when jaws says shift tab only, scrole up twice with the arrows
and this should get you to where the tabs are, from there you have
access to over 10 different tabs to finely customize avast settings
including the look, sounds, scans, etc.

feeling brave? most of you will already have the opportunity to update
via the program interface its self, rightclick your avast icon, click
on update, then program update. but for those of you that have not got
it installed or don't want to use the system tray method, here's a
download link to the free anti virus program. it is not necissary to
install the chrome web browser, so click no when you are asked to
 install.

Hi.

I haven't personally installed internet security yet, but they did say
on the website that they'd be carrying changes across all versions when
they released the next version, which was about a month or 2 ago so i'm
assuming they meant this version. What you could do is download and
install the trial of internet security and test it with jaws and let us
know if it works. I will be installing internet security at some point
my self, i will report back when i have it installed if noone's got any
more on this issue. i've just checked and the latest version of internet

Hi.

Yes, there used to be a way of doing this, but they changed the
interface in avast 5. there maybe a skins option somewhere still, but i
haven't found it yet, i'll keep the list posted if i do find one. The
only thing you are able to do is turn off graphical affects which may
help, that's in the general section of settings, i've got mine turned on
though and it appears to work fine.

[JAWS-Users] Avast 5.0.545 Now accessible!

2010-05-09 Thread Mobeen Iqbal

Hi.

Just to let everyone know, the latest version of avast anti virus,
5.0.545 is now useable and accessible with jaws. I tried it last night
with jaws ten and i was able to register for a free licence, check
registration status, and navigate options on the main window such as
turning gaming mode on/off, checking protection status, etc. Its very
impressive in my opinion that Avast responded quickly to what we wanted
and took the time out to fix the issues people had, its only been a
month after all since the last program update. For those wanting to
install this version, instructions are as follows.

For those that installed a version such as 4.8 or 5.0.507, Go in to the
system tray with insert f11, right-click on the avast icon, go to
update, then program update. Avast will then begin to update. with
5.0.507, you won't get any feedback unless you use the jaws curser. If
you don't want to use this method, skip to the fresh install method below.

Fresh Install.

The installation file for avast 5 can be downloaded from download.com,
the link is below. Go ahead and follow the download and installation
instructions in the installation wizard, and when installed, you should
have version 5.0.545. If in the unlikely event you end up with 5.0.507,
Just do the update method as i described above from the system tray. The
link to the download is:

http://download.cnet.com/Avast-Free-Antivirus/3000-2239_4-10019223.html?part=dl-85737subj=dltag=button

Sorry if these instructions seem brief, i'm writing this in a hurry but
if anyone else wants any tips i'll be happy to help. And in answer to
your question, yes they did do what they promised!

Do you mean avast 5.0.507? If so, that's been out for nearly a month, it
was released on the 16th of last month. and its because of that version
that i wrote to them again. They said they were testing with jaws,
window eyes and NVDA before the next release, so in answer to your

microsoft for every single thing that goes on on my computer because if
they do get it wrong, which they probably will sooner or later, then my
hole pc goes down the pan along with their software. But i'm all for a
fair trial.

Cheers,

Mo.

Mo,

I had the same reticence prior to switching to MSE. But, I read
several articles comparing MSE at various virus testing labs not
affiliated with Microsoft. It rated as the best of the free programs
and among the upper group of commercial AV programs. Since it has an
active spyware as well as anti-virus, and since you can easily
configure the scanning options, I am feeling quite comfortable with
this program.

Again, look at the reviews since this is a relatively new program
within the past eight months.

Lol. I never drempt when i posted the info about avast that it would
create this much of an interesting discussion! There is no wrong or
right answer, this reminds me a little of politics verses religion,
in the tech world maybe there will never be an answer to a lot of
things. Good for you that you're using MSEE is all i can say, as i
said each to his own. The issue from anyone's security prispective
should not necissarily be accessibility though this does play a HUGE
part, but also weather the program actually is doing what its
supposed to do. i haven't tried MSEE, nor do i intend to, though
perhaps i'll try it when i next have a machine i'm not afraid of
breaking in terms of the windows installation. The way i see it, a
good shield should keep the virus from getting in to your pc in the
first place, not clean it when its already infected! surely that's
logical? but yes, in the unlikely event that a virus has entered
someone's computer, it should be able to clean it as well. If
microsoft had a track record we could trust, i'd say excellent,
they're a great company with a great idea and i'd stick to them like
glue. But unfortunately, they don't, maybe we should all switch to
linux to resolve the dispute :) .

Hello everyone may I point out thatMSE is the most accessible
program out there for most jaws users!
I had Avast for a while but it's not totally accessible for those
who are using 64 bit computers nor was it totally accessible for my
old 32 bit windowsXP computer!

therefore don't knock MSE until you know all the facts!
those who are now using MSE good for you!
If something's not broken don't fix it!
As for Avast we had to routejaws to pc to find the uninstal button
to uninstall avast!
With MSE it's totally accessible especially when installing MSE so
really you guys think before you speak!

Re: [JAWS-Users] avast accessibility

2010-05-01 Thread Ch.B.
It all comes down to personal preference, like so many things in life.
No need to bash one product or the other.
I personally prefer avast, run the latest version and am happy with it. I do
not use MSE because, because I am very satisfied with how things work with
avast plus MSE still have this spynet thing, with no way to opt out of
joining this.
So, everyone needs to make that decision for themselves, which product makes
them happy. Avast, avira and mse all got good ratings in recent polls.
