David, I too use vipre and really like it. When you first install it it is a
little annoying. The firewall requests access for your printer and many
programs. You only have to click on accept and remember. It caught quite a
few things for me.

Hi David,

I am using Vipre Internet Security 2015 which has its own built in firewall.
It does a great job, and I seldom have to create a web site exception for
the firewall to let some content that the program detects as harmful come
through. At the same time, it never lets anything that is truly bad through
the firewall and onto my computer. I have used Vipre for years, and have
made it through the times when it was less than accessible, but Threat Track
Security has really done a good job making it accessable again. Waiting for
the 2016 version to be released later this year.

I have been using private firewall for a few years with an acceptable level
of success. I am wondering what other people are using for their firewall
needs.

I know there are a wide variety of offerings out there although many of
which are not usable with a screen reader. The bad thing is that so much
time has passed my memory fails me as to what has already been tried without
success.

It sets itself up as part of the anti-virus package.
There are settings, I never change them unless I am having trouble between
mcafee and my IP network, and then I just reset it to default settings.

Thanks, I just downloaded it again. I removed it last week hoping to use the
CA version included in the package. There is no way to install it. It finds
something from a previous version of sygate, kerio orzonealarm. I removed
every place in the registry that referred to one of these programs and it
still will not install. I just re-installed the jaws friendly sygate now
going through the process of saying yes to many programs.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Firewalls?

2007-08-04 Thread Chris Hallsworth
Well Rich, the installer package should be something like setup.exe or
install.exe. If you look for that, then these will more likely to be
programmes that will install what you wish to install. Also, if a package
uses the Windows Installer technology, files ending in .msi are definitely
installers. However, some of these downloadable software have weird file
names, so it's not obvious these days which one's an installer or not. If
you're not sure, I would go back to the Mcafe website and download it again.
Hope that helps.

 Rich:

You can not run multiple fire wall programs under windows at the same
 time.
Because the windows fire wall works only one way, its best you go with
 something else such as macafee.

Now since you are still having these issues after turning off windows
 fire
wall, it might be best if youninstall macafee and reinstall it again
 and
 see
 what happens. Hope this helps.

[JAWS-Users] Firewalls?

I also have been getting a lot of messages from Spybot that ask if I want to
allow or deny certain files that have a MacAfee title to it.
I usually click allow.
I recently updated the new beta version of Spybot.

I went back to un check theWindows firewall but this did not change the
MacAfee or Spybot messages.

My questions are. Do I need the Windows firewall checked? and why or why not.
Also, if I want to un install Spybot how should I do it? It seems to be
interfering more often.

Thank you.

Hi
You may need to configure the fire wall to work with the programs you
are using. A fire wall keeps programs from accessing the web with out your
permission. So, one may want to authorize the windows fire wall to allow the
programs that need to access the web to get updates. Other wise the fire
wall thinks the program is trying to give your personal information to
someone on the internet.

Once Spybot ended up eating a file that informed my computer that I was
running my own firewall, so I always get that message that no firewall is
turned on. Knowing that, I leave the Windows firewall off but make sure my
3rd party firewall is active. Running two firewalls at the same time is
problematic at best so I understand. But yeah, Spybot may be the culprit in
your instance as well. Maybe.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Firewalls?

2007-08-03 Thread Sarah
Why not go to the website where you got macaffee and download the installer
and run it?

:I do not know what or where an installer is.
: Please send me step by step instructions on how to un install then re
: install MacAfee.
:
: Thank you.

:
:
: Rich, you should have the original installers on your computer.
: Running these, one for Mcafe and one for Spybot, should help. Be
: aware though, there
: is a video issue when you attempt to install Spybot with JAWS
: running; the Windows dong sound is heard, but no error message is
: displayed, and the programme terminates. Use Narrator or some other
: screen reader instead until
: Spybot is fully installed then restart JAWS. Hope that helps

:
: You can not run multiple fire wall programs under windows at the
: same
: time.
: Because the windows fire wall works only one way, its best you go
: with something else such as macafee.
:
: Now since you are still having these issues after turning off
: windows fire
: wall, it might be best if youninstall macafee and reinstall it
: again and
: see
: what happens. Hope this helps.

: - Original Message - I have JAWS 6.0 and XP I am on DSL.
: .
: After reading one of the messages, on this list, I looked in my
: control
: panel and found that my Windows firewallwas off.
: I clicked it on.
: Since then, I have had a terrible time with my MacAfee and Spybot.
: My MacAfee says that I am not protected and I can not click on
: the fix symbol. Even my sighted wife says it doesn't work with
: the mouse.
: For some reason, prior to this, I was getting a message from
: MacAfee that
: it was updating and downloading a anti spam file.
