2010-06-26 Thread Deanne Miller
The caps lock key absolutely doubles as the jaws key on a laptop. There is,
though, a key on all of the laptops I have used, as well as my Acer netbook,
that functions as a jaws key. It is the second key in from the left on the
bottom row of keys, just to the right of the control key. Officially, I
think it's called the function key, but don't quote me on that. I have
worked as a computer trainer/technician for about three years now, and I've
found this key on all of the laptops I have used, including my own. I have
fouhnd that it performs very nearly all of the same functions as the caps
lock key on a laptop. It's simply another option, that's all.

This is one of many situations where using the expression JAWS key
may not be helpful. I think it is preferable to call keys by their
standard names. If you are using JAWS in its laptop configuration, the
so called JAWS key is actually the CAPS LOCK key, and I think it would
be more helpful to use that description.

I have been using my Dell 1545 laptop with an external number pad.

My

question to the list is what is the learning curve if I decided to

Is there any tutorials on this topic anywhere? I have Jaws 10 and my

What do you mean? When you press that function key, that is the key to the
right of the left control in combination with other keys, F12 for instance,
does it say the time? Or if you press that key wit F11, does it invoke the
system tray thing? Is that what you mean by that being a JAWS key also?
Because if that's what you mean, I can say that not all laptops behave like

2010-06-26 Thread Ishe Chinyoka
I think she refers that using this key behaves like JAWS key in most, but
not all cases. On my laptop, it will do so for instance pressing the
function key and the semicolon is like pressing the CAPSLOCK (acting as JAWS
key) to make a plus (or a PC cursor).

The function key helps to turn the right side of the laptop keyboard into
the numpad, the function that the Capslock working as the JAWS key does so.
However, pressing it with the F12 for time, I never tried that. I think you
will need to first assign this key in your global keymap file for that.

However, I find using the function key for other tasks easier such as
pressing it with the left arrow key to work as a HOME Key, with the right
arrow key to make an END key, with the down arrow to make a PAGE Down etc.

2010-06-26 Thread Brian Lee
Hello,

Pressing the caps lock key with the semicolon key in laptop configuration
gives the PC cursor. Using the FN key with the semicolon gives the JAWS
cursor. Using the FN key with P does a right mouse button click. Using
caps lock key with P gives the JAWS cursor. I don't think on most laptops
the FN key simulates the caps lock key. People should be aware when trying
these key combinations that although the caps lock key with F9 lists frames,
on some laptops the FN key with F9 mutes sound output. Although the FN key
is used on laptops to give a user a number pad set up to work with, it
doesn't really simulate the uses of the caps lock key in the JAWS laptop
configuration.

Take care.

Re: [JAWS-Users] LAPTOP KEYS WITH JAWS

2010-06-26 Thread Deanne Miller
It is my understanding that there is a difference between the Insert key and
the JAWS key. They perform many of the same commands, but at times they
perform different ones. For example, In combination with F12, they will
both announce the time. However, Insert plus 8 activates the keyboard
manager, while JAWS key plus 8 is the same as clicking the left mouse
button. The function key, on the other hand, essentially turns the right
side of the keyboard into the equivalent of the num pad on a full keyboard.
Hence, it performs some of the same commands as the JAWS key, but certainly
not all of them. In my experience, most laptops have this function key on
the bottom row ,second key from the left, and it is worth knowing about it
in case it can make using the laptop keyboard a little easier. I apologize
for any confusion I caused by saying it could double as a JAWS key. Let's
just say that, in addition to the Insert key and the caps lock JAWS key,
there is a function key that can make the right side of a laptop keyboard
function like a numpad.

Again, I'm sorry if I confused anyone. I was really just trying to help.

Re: [JAWS-Users] LAPTOP KEYS WITH JAWS

2010-06-26 Thread Steve
Nope, your problem is your understanding confuses two things. The insert
key is the Jaws key.

Where you are getting confused is keyboard layout. On laptops, which
sometimes don't have an insert key, the laptop layout makes the Caps-Lock
key function as the Jaws key. And, because smaller laptops lack full-sized
keyboards with separte numpads, some of the function key assignments such as
left-mouse click emulation have been re-assigned in the Laptop keyboard
layout of Jaws. One of those is left-click which is normally the
insert-numpad slash combination but is re-assigned under the laptop
configuration.

As a matter of fact, if you had a full-sized keyboard on your laptop, or
hooked up one and used the laptop layout in Jaws, you'd see that you can
perform the same functions with the Caps lock key or with the insert key.
This proves that both keys are the Jaws key.

Take my advice, I don't use it anyway.

It is my understanding that there is a difference between the Insert key
and the JAWS key. They perform many of the same commands, but at times
they perform different ones. For example, In combination with F12, they
will both announce the time. However, Insert plus 8 activates the keyboard
manager, while JAWS key plus 8 is the same as clicking the left mouse
button. The function key, on the other hand, essentially turns the right
side of the keyboard into the equivalent of the num pad on a full
keyboard. Hence, it performs some of the same commands as the JAWS key,
but certainly not all of them. In my experience, most laptops have this
function key on the bottom row ,second key from the left, and it is worth
knowing about it in case it can make using the laptop keyboard a little
easier. I apologize for any confusion I caused by saying it could double
as a JAWS key. Let's just say that, in addition to the Insert key and the
caps lock JAWS key, there is a function key that can make the right side
of a laptop keyboard function like a numpad.

Again, I'm sorry if I confused anyone. I was really just trying to help.

What do you mean? When you press that function key, that is the key to
the right of the left control in combination with other keys, F12 for
instance, does it say the time? Or if you press that key wit F11, does it
invoke the system tray thing? Is that what you mean by that being a JAWS
key also? Because if that's what you mean, I can say that not all laptops
behave like that so it would be quite confusing if you call that JAWS key

The caps lock key absolutely doubles as the jaws key on a laptop. There
is, though, a key on all of the laptops I have used, as well as my Acer
netbook, that functions as a jaws key. It is the second key in from the
left on the bottom row of keys, just to the right of the control key.
Officially, I think it's called the function key, but don't quote me on
that. I have worked as a computer trainer/technician for about three
years now, and I've found this key on all of the laptops I have used,
including my own. I have fouhnd that it performs very nearly all of the

This is one of many situations where using the expression JAWS key
may not be helpful. I think it is preferable to call keys by their
standard names. If you are using JAWS in its laptop configuration, the
so called JAWS key is actually the CAPS LOCK key, and I think it would
be more helpful to use that description.

Holding down the caps lock key and pressing these keys performs other
reading functions. Experiment with your laptop and see what happens.
Also, don't forget about Insert plus 1, keyboard help. You might
experiment with your laptop using keyboard help and learn how it
functions. That's how I learned to use both of mine.

Hi Andy,
I understand where you are coming from, but
users should familiarize themselves with the specific keys labeled by their
screen-reader.
Many times we confuse ourselves, by not reading the documentation provided
with the product,
and then listening to terms that are used inter-changeably by different
people.

Just my opinion.

Instead of using the 0 key ont eh numpad, you would use the Caps Lock on the
laptop keyboard. It does take some getting used to at first. You can find
keystrokes for laptops in the Jaws Help Section in your Jaws program. Hope
this helps! wayne Scott
