Yes, WLM 2012 works great in W-10 with Jaws.

Nice, Ed.
You put everything into one succinct package. Kevin mentioned one
additional issue.
The Windows 10 e-mail client was written using the same language as Edge.
It will not work well with jaws. You can, however, use an already existing
e-mail client in lieu of the one built into Windows 10.
Well done, Ed. I believe that your message alone will give anyone the tools
they need to complete this job.

In w-8.1, this method usually works the first time.
In w-7, you may have to repeat this method two times.
It is a little more difficult going from w-7, to w-10, then from w-8.1 to
w-10.
There are more drivers which much be updated by Microsoft for your w-7

Here is the instructions from the Windows 10 Jaws group run by Jim. If you
want to join this group and download all the audio files and text files that
will help you setup W10 and customize it with Jaws. Click on this link to
join.
windows-10-and-jaws-subscr...@yahoogroups.co.in

Upgrading to Windows 10 with jaws 16 or 17.
go to:
http://www.freedomscientific.com/Support/TechnicalSupport/Windows10Upgrade
Download the tool called utility tool, leave it in your download folder.
Download jaws 16.0.4350 or Jaws 17, leave it in your download folder for
future use.
Download the Microsoft media creation tool at:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
On this web page, Go to download link now, Microsoft will determine if you
have a 64 or 32 bit system, they are both built into the tool.
Download the tool and save it to your download folder for future use.
Leave all three of these downloads in your download folder.
Not sure if you have to reserve w-10 now?
Now, if you have not reserved windows 10, please do so.
press enter on the get windows 10 icon in the notification area.
go down the page and fill in your email address ext. this gives you a
verification email.
Now, restart your computer.
check for updates, install any updates, restart to make sure you have all
the latest updates.
Now you are ready to begin the upgrade to windows 10.
Run the jaws utility tool, this will get rid of any jaws fragmented files
and so on from your system.
Tip, after running the F S tool on your w-7 computer, any time you restart
your computer, you will get a message from Jaws saying:.
The mirror drivers are configured incorrectly, press the spacebar on this
message.
In w-10, Jaws does not use the mirror drivers, that is the reason for this
message.
Next, Run the media creation tool.
yes, for your users account warning.
Choose, update this computer now and press enter.
you are now in an ongoing and updating dialog which says:
Windows 10 is being downloaded, continue using your computer.
This could take anywhere between 30 to 60 minutes, depending on your
download speed.
When it is done downloading, it will go through several screens itself
updating your computer and will get it ready for windows 10.
Next, there will be a screen asking you to except the license agreement,
check the yes and press enter on next.
Again, the program will run through several screens by itself.
Next, press enter on install.
now you will have no speech, this install takes 45 to 60 minutes to
complete.
After 1 hour, press the Windows key+enter key to turn on narrator.
Wait for a few minutes if it does not come on right away.
Almost done.
press the next button.
choose express settings.
press the next button.
if done right, in about 10 to 15 minutes, jaws will come on talking on the
desktop in your new w-10 PC.
Now, this is very important, uninstall and reinstall jaws 16 or 17.
This will give you the maximum performance in the w-10 environment.
Tips on how to do this.
Go to programs and features, press enter on Jaws 16 or 17.
Say yes, for your user's account message.
Uninstall Jaws, Keeping shared settings and personal settings.
If the Jaws dialog does not tell you to restart, Turn Narrator on, Windows
key+enter, restart your computer.
Wait the appropriate time for restarting, turn Narrator back on, Windows
key+enter.
Go to your download folder where you have already put the latest Jaws 16 or
17, set up file.
Press enter on the Jaws setup file.
Follow the Jaws prompts, to install Jaws 16 or 17.
After reinstalling jaws, no need for a restart here, jaws will come on
talking with all your settings, except for 2 of them.
Redo your shortcut key, control+ALT+j.
Redo the setting to have jaws come on at the log-on screen.
All your other settings will be remembered by Jaws.
For whatever reason if the media tool fails the first time.
Check for updates, restart, and run the tool again.
In w-8.1, this method usually works the first time.
In w-7, you may have to repeat this method two times.
It is a little more difficult going from w-7, to w-10, then from w-8.1 to
w-10.
There are more drivers which much be updated by Microsoft for your w-7
computer to upgrade to w-10.
After completing your upgrade to w-10, read my text file, called, Windows 10
and Jaws, complete guide TXT.

Yes, you can do it that way.
Just make sure you have the latest Jaws 17 already downloaded to your
download folder.

Then when your sited friend returns your computer.
Turn on narrator to sign and go to your download folder and press enter on
your Jaws installation file.

You should be just fine.
Good luck.
Also, you might want to read my tutorial, called, Customizing w-10 with

Hello Gang:

I tried to upgrade an older Dell laptop to Windows 10, yesterday, through
the MS Accessibility Help Desk. But, was unsuccessful, because I had so many
Windows 7 updates to download and install. Still having to download some
today.

However, here is my point. While talking to one of the MS helpers, he told
me, "Well, Sir, you know that when we do the download for Windows 10, there
will be a time, when there is no connection with us, and sighted assistance
will be necessary." I replied, "Well, I understand at that point, I can turn
on the narrator and complete it without sighted assistance."

He said, "I don't think that is really the case. You need sighted
assistance."

Well, according to the notes from Jim Flusche, The narrator is totally
useable, after the 10 install. Or did I misunderstand Jim's instructions?

Two final questions:

1. Does FS send out CDs for the JAWS 17, for those of us with a SMA?

2. Would a CD be a good thing to have for starting a new Windows 10
computer, or can that be done via narrator, as well.

Thanks. Have a great Sunday!

the

Now, this is very important, uninstall and reinstall jaws 16 or 17.

Tips on how to do this.
Go to programs and features, press enter on Jaws 16 or 17.
Say yes, for your user’s account message.
Uninstall Jaws, Keeping shared settings and personal settings.
If the Jaws dialog does not tell you to restart, Turn Narrator on,
Windows

key+enter, restart your computer.
Wait the appropriate time for restarting, turn Narrator back on, Windows
key+enter.
Go to your download folder where you have already put the latest Jaws
16 or

After completing your upgrade to w-10, see my text file, on
customizing w-10

with Jaws.
Here is a drop box link with 33 tutorials for using win 10 Just enter
on the link, go almost to the bottom of the page that comes up, and
enter on the download link. You will have this folder with win 10
tutorials in it that will really get you started after you download
this folder

Hi all,
I just wanted you to know that you can up grade to Windows 10 with JAWS
16.0.4350 or JAWS 16.0.4463. You do not have to wait until you receive JAWS
17 to up grade. I up graded with JAWS 16.0.4350 and the experience couldn't
have been better. You can use Narrator to do the last couple of steps and
JAWS will come back talking. When it does, just remember to uninstall JAWS
and Reinstall JAWS even if you upgraded from Windows 8.1. It makes things
work so much better in Win 10 if you do. Take care.

Neil

If you wait until the windows 10 install is totally done, you should be OK.
Pressing Windows key+Enter, will turn narrator on, narrator is much smoother

You should be able to tab across and set up your computer.
Good luck...

Mario,

Download and use a free utility called Rufus. It works faster and better
than the Microsoft Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool. This program requires no
installation onto your computer, and you can creat a bootable flash drive or
disk with it. You can do an internet search for the download page.

as I read somewhere, you can create a bootable DVD or USB but only after
upgrading first, unless you purchase a retail or OEM copy of windows 10.
I would like to know how this would be done so I have notes on the steps
to do this once I'm ready.

I hope FS will still send out DVDs for JAWS 17, unless someone can tell
us different.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Upgrading to Windows 10, Microsoft Accessibility; Says sighted assistance necessary

2015-11-08 Thread Mike
It appeared to me, when I purchased my new SMA for JAWS 18 and 19, and
upgraded to 17, that the disk would cost $10. I saw nothing to make me
believe that I would be receiving one by mail. I then talked to FS Sales, to
make my SMA purchase, and nothing was said about them sending me the disk
either. So, unless someone receives one and posts that they did, then I am
assuming that there will be no disk sentt.

[JAWS-Users] Upgrading to Windows 10 from Windows 7

2015-09-05 Thread Scorpio Forever

Hi Folks,

Just changing the subject line to reflect the new route this thread has
taken.

I have just found out that one cannot simply do a re-format of the hard
drive in order to install Windows 10, or to do a clean installation of
Windows 10 and that Windows 10 must be installed as an upgrade. This is
saddening, but alas, one can't really look a gift horse in the mouth.

Some people have messaged me off-list and given me a few tips, such as
uninstalling programs that I feel may interfere with the installation, and
I'm still going to uninstall that really old sound card to see if that's the
problem too, even though the Windows 10 upgrade assessment states that the
sound card is not going to be a problem.

In any case, if you want to read what I read about upgrading to Windows 10,
please see the following link:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-ca/windows-10/why-activate-windows-10

I'll let you all know what happens.

I am using W7, outlook 2010 and latest jaws at present. I am having
problems with W7 installing windows updates. A Microsoft technician went
through my computer and told me that the only solution to my problem is to
get a computer repair tech to repair my computer and the other solution is
to upgrade to W8.1 or W10. The computer is to old for W10 but I think it
could handle W8.1. I would like to know if there is a big learning curve
between W7 and W8.1 as I think that might be the cheapest way to go.This is
my old backup and experimental computer so I am looking for easiest and
cheapest way out. This is an old computer but still works pretty well.
Thanks for any suggestions or advice.

In windows 10 as always, there is more than one way to do things.
Try caps lock+escape, to quit narrator, it works.
Oh, I forgot, when people take the time to write step by step instructions
for others, there is always one or two who want to complain about useless
and dumb stuff...
One reason why I started my own list.

Upgrading to Windows 10 step by step by Jim.
Keystrokes for starting and stopping narrator, you will need them later.
windows key+enter, to start narrator.
caps lock key+escape, to quit narrator.
go to:

Download jaws 16.0.4350, leave it in your download folder for future use.
Download the Microsoft media creation tool at:

you are now in an ongoing and updating dialog which says:
Windows 10 is being downloaded, continue using your computer.
This could take anywhere between 30 to 60 minutes, depending on your
download speed.
When it is done downloading, it will go through several screens itself
updating your computer and will get it ready for windows 10.
Next, there will be a screen asking you to except the license agreement,
check the yes and press enter on next.
Again, the program will run through several screens by itself.
Next, press enter on install.

Almost done.
press the next button.
choose express settings.
press the next button.

desktop.
very important, uninstall jaws.
Keep shared settings and personal settings.
Reinstall jaws, no need for a restart here, jaws will come on talking with
all your settings, except for 2 of them.
Redo your shortcut key, control+ALT+j.
Redo the setting to have jaws come on at the log-on screen.
For whatever reason if the media tool fails the first time.
Check for updates, restart, and run the tool again.

windows 7 may take two or more times until it goes and installs all the
needed drivers.
Good luck...

A Ballast for My Soul

Life is like a stormy sea
That tosses to and fro,
But God's Word will ever be
A ballast for my soul.

By its truth I'll be held fast
Till I reach heaven's shore
Where I will be home at last
And sail life's sea no more!

Not much to write down just good guidelines and you won't have much to
remember. The new inter browser wont't work with jaws write away so it
might be better to wait a little while before upgrading to windows 10. Also
you might need sighted help when it is done upgrading to windows. Jaws
won't start talking. Use windows key and the enter key to get narrator
talking. Also if you have any earlier versions of jaws it won't work and
they will not work. They must be removed. When jaws starts it may need a
repair as well. Last but not least some of your programs may not work with
windows 10. u

2015-06-29 Thread George Martinez CPA
Al, there are 2 major reasons to wait with Windows 10:
1. JAWS always has a while to catch up with a new version of Windows.
2. Microsoft does its testing on the market and so many changes come forth
after a release of Windows and Office Suite products after the market uses
it for a while.

2015-06-28 Thread Rose Combs
Thanks, I know jaws for word-processing, e-mail and internet, as well as file
management tasks but I could never teach PowerPoint or Excel, these programs I
use only when I have no choice and getting either of them to work outside of
filling in a worksheet already prepared or reading a slide are over my head for
the most part.
I have three other screen readers on this computer, one I don't know well, its
command structure is considerably different than JAWS and I have not taken
much time to learn it, although I did solve a problem for someone using that
one once.
One reason I have not considered teaching is that I have no certifications or
degrees and I don't do well if I have to keep repeating the same thing over
more than two times. I normally can read something once, maybe twice depending
on what I am doing while reading and do it at least I could until recent
months. Not sure I have the patience to teach or explain it differently if my
way does not work for someone else.

I enjoyed reading your post where you told us how you use to work and the
problems you had to overcome in your job. Now after being retired, you have
nothing to do. May I suggest, that you try to start a support group for people
living with sight loss. Many people who have lost their sight feel loss and
are full of fear, thinking that their life is over.
That's not true there is much that they can learn to do. They just have to find
someone to lean on. That could be your support group. It is obvious that you
have many life skills and you have much experience with being blind while
still beaing able to hold a job by using the computer with jaws. You have much
to offer and you may help many people by teaching them life skills and the use
of jaws. There is no telling whose life you may change. . That is what I did
after losing my sight just five years ago. I started a support group for people
who have lost their sight or had been blind for all or most of their lives. It
gives me something to do because the group means a lot to me. Now after four
years, we still are the only support group of it's kind in all of Dallas
Texas. Just a thought. LeDon.

Old version Jaws 15 has already been uninstalled from my computer, but then I
won't be in a great hurry for Window 10, will do it after I know a bit more
about Jaws 17 probably, I am still in 7, as until recently I had to be for my
job. Now no longer employed, retired earlier than I thought I was going to do
so last year at this time. Not anxious to move to 10 at this point as I am now
alone, my late husband is not here to help me initially as he was with 7,
Vista, XP, 98. I held onto 98 for two years after everyone else went to XP
until the computer I was using stopped working in fact. However, I was more
than glad to upgrade from Vista to 7 but was not a first-day adopter, changed
in February 2010. I know it is long past time for me to move on from 7 but 8.0
did not appeal at all, I here 8.1 is better but, since 10 is out soon will wait
at least until September or October to switch. Will see if my cousin can come
help, first as he is an expert with degree in computer software engineering.
Based on what I am hearing thus far, I know I am going to prefer Windows 7 over
10, but6 progress is the name of the game. No squealing for joy over this
change as I did when 95 became accessible but know must continue to progress if
at a snail's pace. \

On the other hand I am a first day adopter of Jaws beta when it becomes
available, I trust FS to meet my needs if not initially soon after as I don't
trust Microsoft to do so. I don't turn many problems with a beta, as I usually
do mostly internet, e-,ail and word processing, don't touch Excel unless I am
forced to do so and only then if someone else has created the worksheet. I am
not into desktop publishing, don't subscribe to movie services, am not into
truly complex stuff at all and only maybe twice in the years I have used Jaws
have I turned in a complaint or bug report. Still, for the most part I like
the improvements I have seen over the past 18 years or so, for the things I
have done the most. Only wish that more medical transcription platforms

nothing to do.
LeDon.

so last year at this time.

Only wish that more medical transcription platforms did
everything they should do with Jaws, but that is not necessarily the fault of
JAWS programmers but the programmers who create the platforms. I was employed
39 years at one job, managed with Optacon, ASAP, JAWS during that time with
minor difficulties that my former job understood but was outsourced in March.
I might still be employed had I been able to access every item needed in
eScription 11 for example but instead I stressed out, became very ill with more
than stress as an issue and lost the job after six weeks. Again, not Jaws
fault, not completely my fault but more the programmers and supervisors who
could not understand the issues I was facing with boxes that would not open so
I could provide the correct information, some of which were not even visible to
JAWS.

Since this is not a commonly used program by thousands but only used by

Please somebody tell me why I try so hard to keep things on topic. It is
proving to be a waste of my time and bandwidth. Which turns in to a monetary
cost as well.

I keep wondering when I check my email in the morning if the list will even
have a single message out of 50 that is remotely near the fringes of being on

Oh well guess I'll just keep on wishing, maybe I'll pick up a lottery ticket

forward to the voice activation features Cortana will bring (even if they’ll

I do however, have one big reservation about Windows 10, which will resonate
with anyone who has been through a major system update and uses adaptive

of third party software. Microsoft have announced that as part of the Windows

Windows 10 will come in a range of flavours, much like the versions before
it, so if you are using Windows 7 or 8 home, you’ll get a free update to
Windows 10 home. If you’re using Windows 7 or 8 Pro, then you’ll get the update
to Windows 10 Pro. While traditionally, Windows updates have mostly been
security patches and bug fixes, with the occasional Service Pack which might
introduce some new functionality, Microsoft have generally held over on major
system and interface updates for new releases of Windows.

Now however, Microsoft have announced that Windows 10 will be the last
version of Windows –

repackaging the lot in a major update called say Windows 11, Microsoft will
simply add these features as they are developed into your regular Windows

suddenly new options and settings will appear, Cortana will work in Australia,
and other things will be changed and improved. But will that always be a good
thing? Imagine if you were happily using Windows 7 and then one day got a
Windows update you couldn’t defer and all of a sudden you lost the start menu
and had the Windows 8 metro tile interface? With user interface and feature
enhancements being brought into regular Windows updates, it is possible. Since
in Windows 10 home edition, you won’t be able to defer updates,

Check podcast by FS on jaws 16 and window 10. There comments about 10
is very interesting. Also the suggestion regarding making IE the
default program. Also how you will need to uninstall old version of
jaws before installing 10. Anyone who will get 10, must listen to the
podcast. I did and will follow their suggestion.

I do however, have one big reservation about Windows 10, which will resonate
with anyone who has been through a major system update and uses adaptive
technology (third party software which makes the PC accessible to those with
various disabilities) – and indeed for anyone who relies heavily on any piece
of third party software. Microsoft have announced that as part of the Windows
10 experience you won’t be able to delay updates in Windows 10 home edition.

Windows 10 will come in a range of flavours, much like the versions before it,
so if you are using Windows 7 or 8 home, you’ll get a free update to Windows 10
home. If you’re using Windows 7 or 8 Pro, then you’ll get the update to Windows
10 Pro. While traditionally, Windows updates have mostly been security patches
and bug fixes, with the occasional Service Pack which might introduce some new
functionality, Microsoft have generally held over on major system and interface
updates for new releases of Windows.

Now however, Microsoft have announced that Windows 10 will be the last version
of Windows –

meaning that instead of bringing in new features in a few years and repackaging
the lot in a major update called say Windows 11, Microsoft will simply add
these features as they are developed into your regular Windows updates. On the
one hand this has the potential to be really handy – One day suddenly new
options and settings will appear, Cortana will work in Australia, and other
things will be changed and improved. But will that always be a good thing?
Imagine if you were happily using Windows 7 and then one day got a Windows
update you couldn’t defer and all of a sudden you lost the start menu and had
the Windows 8 metro tile interface? With user interface and feature
enhancements being brought into regular Windows updates, it is possible. Since
in Windows 10 home edition, you won’t be able to defer updates,

you won’t be able to do much about it if it does happen. With Windows 10
Professional, and Windows 10 Enterprise, users have the option of taking
updates after a few months, only after they’ve been extensively tested on home
users (see previous link) – which makes using Windows 10 home great if you like
being an early adopter and trying out new things (you can also sign up to be a
Windows insider and download early builds of Windows 10 now before they launch,
and get new features in future even before they are pushed out to Windows 10
home users.

Same here. Thanks for reminding about IE - need to make note of that one.

Check podcast by FS on jaws 16 and window 10. There comments about 10 is
very interesting. Also the suggestion regarding making IE the default
program. Also how you will need to uninstall old version of jaws before
installing 10. Anyone who will get 10, must listen to the podcast. I did
and will follow their suggestion.

Hi trish,
Thank you for this mail.

I'm going 10 Pro on my 2 laptops and say, 'later to 7.'
Got to stay running with the horses,
I notice you're up there in the pack.

I’m excited about the upcoming release of Windows 10 – which is good,
since I’m writing a book on Windows 10 (Please E-Mail me to subscribe to
my E-Mail list to be in the know as soon as it’s released).

I think the return of the start menu is a fantastic thing. I am looking
forward to the voice activation features Cortana will bring (even if they’ll
only be available to several countries at launch), and I’m ambitious about
the possibilities of the new Windows Store making it safe again for people
to download addon software without extra addons they didn’t ask for (see
