Re: [JAWS-Users] when to use the jaws cursor

2013-06-06 Thread Hicks Steven (CORNWALL IT SERVICES)
Using the JAWS cursor is brilliant for moving around the screen, navigating
away from the focus for example.
It is like moving the mouse around and asking JAWS to tell you what you are
moving over.

Tom,

I can tell you how to switch from the PC to JAWS cursor. With the NUM LOCK
off, hit the minus sign or dash on the number pad, top row key farthest to the
right. JAWS will then say, JAWS cursor. Given my own unadventurous use of

I use it extensively to navigate our computerized patient record system
when the PC cursor often does not read field names or identify controls.

Re: [JAWS-Users] when to use the jaws cursor

2013-06-05 Thread Eric Damery
This is a great question, and I thought I'd speak up to try and answer.

The JAWS cursor, is represented on screen to a visual person, as the mouse
pointer. While it is not so necessary today, in the past when we did not have
as much accessibility built into to the applications and OS, there were many
more options that you would have to look around the screen (explore so to
speak) in areas that the PC focus was not able to move. For example: A window
title, a status line at the bottom of a window, or static text in a dialog box
maybe. In these cases, you could Route JAWS to PC in order to bring it to
Window with focus, and begin to explore around. The JAWS cursor speaks in a
different voice (Pitch) so you can tell when one is active over the other.

JAWS users who have been using JAWS for over 10 years, are more likely to have
learned to use the JAWS cursor and they tend to use it more today as well.

Regards,
Eric

nothing. Then switch to JAWS cursor and explore the screen with it. You
can use it if you meet an application which is not accessible. For

You can use the JAWS cursor to examine the screen when you are looking
for something that you know is there, but is not apparent when you are
reading with the PC cursor, like an object that you want to click on.
When you find what you are looking for, you can direct the PC cursor to
that object, and activate it by pressing the left mouse key on the
numeric keypad.

For example. can't do a thing in Avast with the pc cursor. But by bringing
over the Jaws cursor, able to click on what I am looking for. Such as the
scan page and than picking the type of scan I want with the Jaws cursor.
Usually in a program I am not familiar with I will bring the Jaws cursor
over and use the arrow keys to explore the page.

Tom,

I can tell you how to switch from the PC to JAWS cursor. With the NUM
LOCK
off, hit the minus sign or dash on the number pad, top row key farthest
to
the right. JAWS will then say, JAWS cursor. Given my own
unadventurous
use of JAWS, I've never really figured out what switching to the JAWS
cursor

is good for, so I also await a meaningful learning experience.

Cheers! JH

I've used jaws for many, many years, but actually have no idea when it's
necessary to switch from the pc cursor, to the jaws cursor, and how to
use

it. can someone tell me when and how please?

You can use the JAWS cursor to examine the screen when you are looking
for something that you know is there, but is not apparent when you are
reading with the PC cursor, like an object that you want to click on.
When you find what you are looking for, you can direct the PC cursor to
that object, and activate it by pressing the left mouse key on the
numeric keypad.
