No, it should be 1803, which is the code for the latest Windows 10 release,
being the year 2018 and that the version was the one written in March, 03.

The Fall Creator Update was 1709.

Hi Kevin, I have reported this behavior to VFO for J18, J2018 and both the
February and March updates as the problems you describe continue as before.
Inasmuch as the Windows 10 O S and its Mail client are here to stay, I was
hoping for these annoyances to be addressed and fixed at some point.
I assume others experience these same behaviors and encourage anyone so
effected to advise VFO. Best, Mitch

It seems that with the March jaws update there is still a problem with the mail

Every once in awhile the mail app will exit the program automatically this
doesn’t happen often, also a couple of times I experienced reading problems.
Sometimes I cannot reread what I wrote in a composed email message! There are
work arounds for these, but I shouldn’t have to do these!

I'm sorry. What happened to the "control userpasswords2" command?

Is this not available on your computer?

In case it is, the command is to user your run dialog box and type in the
following without the quotes:

"control userpasswords2" and press enter.

You'll find a checkbox that states, users must enter a password to use this
computer.

Uncheck this box, and when you press apply, you'll be prompted to enter the
username of the user that should always log on, and to type in their
password. Confirm the password and press the ok button.

I'm confused as to why no one suggested this?

It's been the default command for this task for as long as I've owned a
computer.

It's been the default command for this task for as long as I've owned a

You can also type this in the search field in the start menu.
2. You'll be on the User Accounts dialog, select the user account that you

enter a user name and password to use

3. Tab to the Apply, button & press the spacebar, & it'll say something like

time, type your password again to confirm your password, now tab to, Okay, &
press enter.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Windows 10 Log-in Without Password

2017-12-26 Thread Jason White
With my new laptop, I configured Windows Hello for fingerprint recognition.
All I need to do is to touch the fingerprint sensor to log in - there's no
need to supply the user name or the password.

This solution has the advantage of increased security (automatic log in is
unacceptable in my situation), while avoiding the traditional user
name/password entry requirement.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Windows 10 Log-in Without Password

2017-12-26 Thread Russ Kiehne

How To Automatically Login In Windows 10

Want to quickly boot to your Windows 10 desktop by skipping the login
screen?
Would you like to avoid typing your account password each time you turn on
your PC?

You can configure Windows 10 to automatically boot to the desktop or Start
screen.

The core benefit of configuring Windows 10 to automatically sign-in is you
don’t need to remember the password, which also means that you save a couple
of seconds during the boot. This, in turn, means that Windows 10 boots to
the

Start screen or desktop a couple of seconds faster.

The procedure to set up automatic logon in Windows 10 is very similar to the
one in Windows 7 and Windows 8.

This method is applicable to both local user account and Microsoft account.
In other words, whether you’re using a Microsoft account or local user
account, you can use this guide to enable automatic logon.

WARNING: Enable automatic logon only if you are the sole user of your
computer. If you often share your computer with others, others will be able
to peek into your account without knowing the password.

You can follow one of the methods given below to turn on automatic login in
Windows 10.

Method 1 of 2

Automatically logon without password

This is the easiest way to automatically login to Windows 10 without
entering

the password.

Step 1: First step is to open Run command box by simultaneously pressing
Windows logo and R keys (Windows+R). In the Run dialog box, type Netplwiz
and

then press Enter key.

Step 2: In the resulting User Accounts dialog, select your user account
first

and then uncheck the option labelled Users must enter a user name and
password to use this computer. Click Apply button to see Automatically sign
in box.

Step 3: In the Automatically sign in dialog, type your password and then
re-enter the password to confirm the same.

Finally, click OK button.

Method 2 of 2

Turn on automatic sign-in using Registry

If, for some reason, you’re not able to configure Windows 10 to
automatically

logon by following the above method, please use this method.

Step 1: Open Registry Editor. To do so, type Regedit in the Start menu
search

box or Run command box and then press Enter key. Click Yes button when you
see the UAC (User Account Control) box.

Step 2: In the Registry Editor, navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Step 3: On the right-side, look for the entry named DefaultUserName,
double-click on it and make sure that your Microsoft account or local user
account name is appearing under Value data box.

Step 4: Next, on the right-side again, look for the entry named
DefaultPassword. If the entry doesn’t exist, please create one by
right-clicking on the empty space, clicking New and then clicking String
Value. Rename it to DefaultPassword and enter your password in the Value
data

box. Click OK button.

Step 5: Finally, you need to enable automatic logon. To do so, on the
right-side (once again), look for the entry labelled AutoAdminLogon and then
change its value from 0 (zero) to 1 (one).

That’s it! Restart your PC to see your Windows 10 automatically logging into
your account without asking you to enter the password. Good luck!

Without a doubt, the second method is not as easy as the first one.
Have fun with Windows 10!

Re: [JAWS-Users] windows 10 mail questions

2017-11-20 Thread David Moore
Hi!
If you delete a message in the Win10 Mail app, it is deleted from the server.
They only stay on the server if you do not delete the message in the Win10 Mail
app.
So, they are gone on the server as soon as you press delete in the Mail app LOL!
Take care!

I hope this is not off topic. I’m using the above named program with Jaws
2018. On my old Windows xp machine with its equally old email client, this
account was set to pop3. That’s all the old email program supported. There
was a setting in that email client that allowed me to delete messages from
the server once they had been downloaded. I know that with gmail on my
phone, I have the option of archiving deleted messages or permanently
deleting them after, I think it is 30 days. I can’t find anything like that
in the windows 10 mail app, which, I guess, means that deleted messages are
going to stay on the server forever, which is not at all what I want. If
there is a setting like what I have described in this app, where is it and
how do I get to it?

Also, I am seeing all of the emails I sent showing up in my messages list in
the inbox in the mail app. That never happened on my xp machine, and it does
not happen in any mail account I have on my phone, and it is not something I
want. I don’t mind a separate sent mail folder, but I sure don’t want to see
what I send in my inbox. How can I make this stop? Thanks in advance for any
help.

Thanks, Rick. The choice, if you don’t want the basic client, seems to be
between Outlook and T-bird. Having used neither, I was frankly hoping the basic
Win ten email would do it for me, but might have to look into these other
possibilities.

Hi Rick,
I might have solved my problem by taking sent mail out of my favorites. When
jaws told me I was in the Messages list, I thought I was in my inbox,
because at some point I was. But it’s entirely possible that this messages
list with some sort of combined deal where sent mail was showing up along
with received email. Anyway, since doing that, I’m not seeing sent mail in
that messages list. Which email client are you using?

Hi Mary,
I don't have the Mail app for Windows 10, so I can't say for sure,
but, perhaps there is a setting in the app like the IOS mail app that is set
to carbon copy you on every sent message.
From past experience, I know that the Windows 10 app doesn't sport the same
flexibility in options as other e-mail clients.

It doesn't sound like he actually wants to stop updates altogether, just
to

choose when they happen, which as you can say you can do with Group Policy
editor with Enterprise, Educational or professional Windows 10. Perhaps
play

with the configuration settings and see if the download button appears. I
had to tweak my Windows 10 a lot as it was being very uncooperative.

Another way, if you just have the Home edition of Windows 10, is to set
your
connection to "metered". In the past this only worked with a wi-fi
network,

but I believe Microsoft caved in to pressure when they released the
Creators' update, and you can now do this with an Ethernet connection as
well. When I first got this computer I actually had to do this, because my
modem wasn't working and so if I wanted to be on the net, I had to tether
my

phone to the computer. Windows 10 immediately started sucking up all the
data. Anyway, if you really wanted to try this, there are some

If I'm not mistaken, unless you're running Windows 10 Enterprise or
Professional, Downloads are automatically Downloaded and Installed. The
only button you should be able to see is the restart now button if you
want

to finish the downloads instead of waiting for the computer to do it for
you.

With Windows 10 Enterprise and Professional, you have the option to defer
updates, but that only means you're allowed some time before you have to
download and install it, and even than, this feature only applies to major
service packs of Windows 10, such as the Creator's Update etcetera.

Hope this helps.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Windows 10 question

2017-08-17 Thread JM Casey
That's a very interesting post, Joseph. Thanks for this. I like how you call
it the windows 10 "ecosystem". It seems appropriate. It's a little
unsettling perhaps that, due to the nature of the beast, stability is not
really something we should even expect. I guess this is the sort of thing we
are just supposed to expect now, with Windows being a contuininng work in
progress always and forever more. It doesn't seem wrong that we should, at
the very least, expect things to simply work efficiently and smoothly. I
understand what you mean about the foundation of support here, but most
users wouldn't really have the time or inclination (I think) to spend effort
trying to use something that doesn't seem to work as efficiently as other
products. I guess as you say the onus is on MS and VFO

Hi,
Ever since Windows 10 Version 1507 (build 10240) hit the air in July 2015
(or shortly before), I did tell people why supporting Edge early is crucial:
some universal apps will use Edge rendering engine to display web content,
including (as some found out the hard way) Windows Store. Sometimes it is
best to wait for things to settle, but there are times when at least some
kind of a foundation should be laid to provide support for a technology
later. I and others had a heated debate on a Windows 10 forum in July this
year regarding this matter, with the question of who is to blame the most
taking the center stage. In the end, both MS and VFO are to blame:
Microsoft, for not communicating clearly as to how screen readers could
achieve what they want, and VFO, for insisting for stability. I've been
preaching this for the last two to three years and will continue to say the
following as long as Windows 10 ecosystem lives: in Windows 10 ecosystem,
praying for stability will get us NOWHERE.
In regards to Edge and JAWS, there is a showstopper bug I'm following: as of
latest preview build for Fall Creators Update, no screen reader (including
Narrator itself) will announce notifications, partly caused by under the
hood API changes that might be responsible for suppressing a UIA event from
firing. If JAWS is supposed to rely on this, then this will create a
situation where Edge support is there but important bits won't work right
away.
Cheers,
joseph

the Run JAWS from System Tray option in the Basic Settings dialog, which
display JAWS as a background application icon on the system tray (right near
the clock at the bottom of the screen) instead of as an opened window on the
taskbar. BTW, you won't find JAWS by using ALT+TAB or the JAWS Window List
(INSERT+f10) dialog.

Afternoon all.

I have a question, and please forgive the lack of correct terminology. I am
using JAWS 17, Windows 10 on a dell laptop. How can I bring up the JAWS menus?
For some reason, the JAWS screen has up and disappeared on me. Thanks in

Re: [JAWS-Users] Windows 10 Outlook 210 notifications

2017-08-09 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi,

The faster way is to right-click in the Outlook's system tray icon (use the
INSERT+F11 command, for example) and, in the context menu, uncheck the Show New

Hope it helps!

To follow up on Fernando's explanation, putting JAWS in the system tray saves
the annoyance of finding JAWS every time you cycle through open applications
with alt-tab. You bring JAWS up only when you want to with JAWS key+j.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Windows 10 mail;

2016-09-24 Thread Kenny

Your steps are correct.

The mail app will mirror whatever messages she currently has stored in her
account at Gmail.com. That's one of the advantages of using iMap over POP3.
Any new messages to and previous messages stored in her gmail account will
be sync in the Mail app.

Believe there is an option in settings for restricting how far back you want
the Windows 10 mail app to retrieve previous messages.

Good afternoon to all;

One of my client's would like to setup the windows 10 mail client.

I would like to just verify some information,

1, to setup the email account,

I need to go to,

Settings, windows-key+i

2, tab to the list of items, and right arrow and enter on,

Accounts,

3, then I need to again tab once,

Now, arrow down and enter on,

Email accounts,

4, again I need to tab and here I see, add email account,

Here I would add enter.

Now the type of account is Gmail,

So, I assume I choose google?

Now, when I go through the setup,

Will my client just receive all new messages from the Gmail account?

Or, can my client receive all previous mail.

Just want to make sure I will do this right.

In advance, thank you.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] windows 10 boot to desktop

I’m attempting to recapture some lost information
from my corrupted flash drive
can someone refresh me on how to boot my windows 10 computer to the desktop
bypassing the logon and password.
I have no pesky kids or anyone so booting straight to desktop is safe for
me.

Email is golden!!!

Hi David, I agree, the restore is not at all accessible in W-10, no, I do
not think you can make a restore on a flash drive.

Windows does have a built in capability of backing up your system, but
unfortunately the restore is not at all accessible. So far as it being saved
on a flash drive, I would think the answer is no since they do not allow
file sizes beyond a certain point.

Believe me if somebody could come up with a repair disk including sound
drivers, they would make a lot of lives easier.

It wouldn't be the end all of backup options, but it could go a long way for
many people.

Re: [JAWS-Users] windows 10 and making a recovery disk

2016-07-23 Thread David Moore

Hi Kathy!
You must have read my mind, because I am trying to figure out the best way
to do this myself. I am going to post a text tutorial that Brian Vogel did,
an informal text file that he put together and sent it to me. The first link
though, will be a how to do a system restore with win10 text file. Brian
Vogel's link to his text file will be the second link. If the system totally
crashes, we cannot reinstall windows, because we have no screen reader help
until Windows boots up. If Windows cannot boot, I do not know what we do.
However, I am going to put two Drop Box links here that cover doing a system
restore, and creating a bootable disk. Please, anyone, let us know if you
have any ideas on what we do if windows 10 does not boot, because we
downloaded it and do not have win10 on a disk. Would the MS disability desk
help us put win10 back on our PC, as long as it was working fine and just
needed Windows put back on it?

Here are the two Drop box links.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/8rqjhu6zs634fyv/Doing%20a%20system%20restore%20with%20win10.txt?dl=1
https://www.dropbox.com/s/agq1kjaqsicfndt/How%20to%20Recover%20from%20a%20Complete%20System%20Crash.txt?dl=1
Please let me know if you were able to download these text files and what
you think about this subject.

2016-07-23 Thread Jason White
Those of us who use Linux have had this capability for a long time - load a
rescue disk with speech and braille support, then use the command line to run
whatever system recovery tools are needed.

If you're taking a backup to a USB drive (Flash or otherwise), just make sure
you have enough free space on the drive for everything you wish to include in
the bakcup.

Hi,
Redstone (specifically, Redstone 1 (RS1)) is indeed the codename for Windows
10 Anniversary Update (also known as Version 1607). It includes an improved
Narrator, Cortana improvements, Edge extensions among other things. As far
as accessibility is concerned, it includes a bit more responsive UI
Automation.

See this post from Win10 group:

/1997384?p=
,,,20,0,0,0::RecentPostDate%2FSticky,,anniversary+update,20,2,0,1
997384

An item of note is Edge and UAC (User Account Control) dialog
changes:
Microsoft has changed certain technical information about Edge that'll take
a while for Freedom Scientific (now part of VFO) to implement, and UAC is
now powered by the same platform that powers universal apps.

JAWS compatibility: I recommend waiting until at least 18 beta comes out
this fall. Although Insiders who uses JFW report it is working to some
extent, crashes were observed with Anniversary update preview builds for
some, and upcoming JFW 18 would have resolved them by now (unfortunately,
toasts are not announced in Windows 10 despite the fact that help balloon
notification is checked under verbosity settings for each level).
As far as
universal apps are concerned, it's a mixed bag of accessibility, and use of
touch cursor is a must.

Hi David,
Yes, this is why I keep cortana turned off and the bing results turned off
in W-10, until the Edge browser is made accessible by Freedom Scientific.
This is why I keep a handy Google shortcut, on my desktop, as I am doing
internet searches using IE 11.

I can't wait until the Edge browser is made totally accessible with Jaws.
However, that looks like that may be a ways off yet.
Good luck...

In windows 10, if you open the start menu, type some search terms, and open
a web search result, then until a few days ago, it used to open the search
in your default browser. The same applied if you were using Cortana, and it
didn't know the answer to your request.

However, Microsoft have changed this so these now open in the Edge browser,
irrespective of which browser you have set as your default browser.
Unfortunately, Edge is not accessible using Jaws or Window Eyes, though it
is at least partially accessible using NVDA or narrator.

This seems like a very surprising decision by microsoft, to make this change
before Edge is accessible by users of all the major screen readers. This is
a link to the announcement by microsoft:

from taskbar search box.

This is

I personally waited to get windows 10 until I bought a new laptop and didn't
have a choice if I wanted an inexpensive laptop. I have windows 10 on my
personal laptop and windows 7 on my work laptop. I would stick with windows 7
until you don't have a choice. You could put Jaws on your wife's PC and see how
it works for you.

Thanks,
Jason

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Windows 10 The Edge

I am wavering back and forth about updating from Windows 7 to Windows 10.
In looking at messages on this list I am seeing 2 concerns; the Windows 10
environment is a whole new animal to learn and the other issue seems to be that
JAWS 17 has a large numbers of bugs and misses. I am not a super geek like
many of you and would like your advice. For example, my sighted wife got
Windows 10 and she can no longer find heer substancial list of old and new
Favorites with the Edge. Have you been able to locate your Favorites, and if
so, is it complicated? With Windows 7 it is a simple keyboard command of alta
and there they are.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Wayne

hello;
if you want your windows 10 to load directly on to the desktop,

you need to go into, ctrl panel,
taskbar properties,
now, go to navigation,
now tab until you hear;
“When I sign in, go to the Desktop instead of the Start Screen”
this box needs to be checked.
note, you can type control into the search edit field instead of going to
control panel.

No password box for me, when I boot this lil guy.

First thing I see is the start menue and I'm in the edit box to search.
The navigation tab in the properties is where I made that change but can't
remember if it were for 8.1, 8, or windows 7. Lol.

Hi,
Actually goes to the password edit box first if you have one, Then, the
desktop, If, you tab a couple times you should run into the recycle bin.

The answer is yes, I have not heard of the other stuff you posted, It's been
straight to the desktop from day one. Maybe you mean windows +I for settings?

Does this still exist in windows 10. It used to be I think navigation pane in
the taskbar properties.

Mine lands on the start menu.

Hi all,
The instructions I gave Rose were my own words. I did not have Jim's
materials in front of me to change a word or two. I have a great great
memory. Should it be held against me that I can remember in my head what Jim
says in his tutorials. It is coming straight out of my head. What am I
supposed to do? Am I supposed to pull up Jim's writings and try not to put
it in his words? Yes, Jim taught me well, but I am not purposely rephrasing
what he says. I am just saying what comes to my head and that is all. If
what Jim says comes from my head, what am I supposed to do. Am I supposed to
not have a memory? How can I help what comes out of my head? I am not doing
anything on purpose! I am just helping people with the information I know.
Isn't that petty that Jim is so concerned with having credit for his work
that he does not want to help blind people? Why is Jim assuming that I am
copying his work? Have a great one.

Hi David and the Jaws users list.
Sorry about any confusion my last email may have caused.
You know that my w-10 and Jaws complete guide can be shared by anyone.
What I was talking about was the plagiarizing of my material by certain
people.
People that I helped teach and learn w-10 with Jaws.
People changing a few words and then calling my work there work.
For some reason they want to receive the reward for my hard work.
I asked this person 4 or 5 times now to quit plagiarizing my work and
calling it his own.
But he refuses to do so, so I had to make a public statement to this effect.
He needs to come up with his own work and needs to quit taking credit for my
work.
Again I apologize for any extra traffic this may have caused.
Yes, my guide that David has graciously put on his Jaws web site can be
freely used and shared.
Thanks...

Hi David,
Gee, I am glad you learned so much from me.
Now you act like all my material belongs to you to share with others.
I will now publically ask you not to share my group tutorials with others,
this is my material, not yours.
Just because you change a word or two like in this email, it is still my

Hi rose,
All of your data should be there. To find installed programs, press the
Windows key and up arrow to all apps and press enter. In win10, all desktop
programs and all universal apps will be in the list. In the list itself, you
cannot use first letter navigation, but here is what you can do. Tab once
from the list of programs, and you will be in a list of all the letters in
the alphabet. Arrow to the letter you want and press enter twice. Important,
press enter twice. You will then be put in a list of programs that start
with just that letter. Take care, and please email me off list, because I
installed win10 in August, and I know everything about navigating win10 and
customizing it to work best with JAWS. Press windows + I brings up the
