Marcin,

If you are not familiar with the JBoss code base I would strongly recommend starting
with some unit test work.
Otherwise you can pick one of the JBoss products and try to take on development tasks.

Let me know.

Ivelin

Summary: Multiple CMRs in same tx

Initial Comment:
Hi.

I've 3 entities which are in the following relationship:

 A 1 --- * B * --- 1 C

and a method in session facade which creates a A entity and a lot
of B entities. The C entities exists before the facade method is
called.

What happens is this:

1) A is created
2) Another method is called which creates B's with different
properties (and sub-methods)
3) The B is created with a reference to C (set is called in
ejbPostCreate)
4) The newly created B's are then assigned to A

All tx attributes are set to Required in case of a failure
somewhere under the creation.

Inside the facade tx I can see that all B's has a reference to C.

When the facade method completes a check to the database
shows that only the last B's reference to C is set.

That is:

During facade tx (bean level):
 B1 - C1
 B2 - C1

After facade tx (and in database):
 B1 - NULL
 B2 - C1

A find call after the facade method shows this as well (b1.getC()
== null b2.getC() != null). CMP fields are fine in both cases.

The A - B relationships are fine.

All primary keys in A, B, and C are based on PostgreSQL
sequences. The reference between the entities are based on
sql-/jdbc-type INTEGER.

The tests have been run on 3.2.6RC1 and 4.0.0RC1 -- not the
branches, sorry. I searched the closed bug reports for 3.2.6RC2
couldn't a match for this case.

The container is run with default setup (COMMIT B).

I can try and make a testcase if needed -- the original code
creates 1000's of entities and have a lot more dependencies.

Let me know if I can provide more information.
 Juan

I tried to change the logic in the method that create the B entity (createB)
such that it runs in a RequiresNew transaction. I then exposed this
method in the remote interface and let the createBs method call it through
the remote interface.

But still it gives the same result. All the B's has a reference to a C during
the create methods - but not in the database or in the following find
method.

I've attached the changed facade file, so you can take a look at it. I'm
running on the Branch_4_0 now.

Any ideas what I could try next (difference cache/interceptor settings,
other call/transaction structure, ...) ?
 Juan

I managed to create a testcase based on only the B's and C's.

You'll need jbossall-client.jar and XDoclet libs in the lib
directory.

Sorry for the delay -- let me know if I can help with
something.

insert-after-ejb-post-create hasn't been changed, so it's false.

I'll try and make a testcase for you.

Afraid not. We moved to a web services architecture which meant we no longer had a
requirement to invoke the remote EJB using RMI/IIOP.

commons-logging is unlikely to be fixed in the nearest future
(http://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=31286),
however, I think, a patched commons-logging could be bundled
in jboss, the one that is using WeakHashMap for example
instead of Hashtable. Seems that LogFactory is not subclassed
anywhere in JBoss so there will be no problems with that.

that previous reference from Jasper logger now exists no more

All primary keys in A, B, and C are based on PostgreSQL
sequences. The reference between the entities are based on
sql-/jdbc-type INTEGER.

The tests have been run on 3.2.6RC1 and 4.0.0RC1 -- not the
branches, sorry. I searched the closed bug reports for 3.2.6RC2
couldn't a match for this case.

The container is run with default setup (COMMIT B).

I can try and make a testcase if needed -- the original code
creates 1000's of entities and have a lot more dependencies.

Let me know if I can provide more information.

But according to the source code the relationship generated
between B and C is one-to-one. So, it's expected except for
the fact that you can check that in-memory the relationship
is in fact many-to-one. Do you check it before reassigning
the C to a new B instance?

I tried to change the logic in the method that create the B entity (createB)
such that it runs in a RequiresNew transaction. I then exposed this
method in the remote interface and let the createBs method call it through
the remote interface.

But still it gives the same result. All the B's has a reference to a C during
the create methods - but not in the database or in the following find
method.

I've attached the changed facade file, so you can take a look at it. I'm
running on the Branch_4_0 now.

Any ideas what I could try next (difference cache/interceptor settings,
other call/transaction structure, ...) ?

I managed to create a testcase based on only the B's and C's.

You'll need jbossall-client.jar and XDoclet libs in the lib
directory.

Sorry for the delay -- let me know if I can help with
something.

The Axis ArraySerializer is strictly for rpc/encoded only. If you have arrays with
literal encoding, you should wrap them with a pojo.

[JBoss-dev] [JBossWS] - Difference between JBoss.NET and JBossWS

What is the difference between these two projects? In the past I have used JBoss.NET
and via a few XDoclet tags exposed my EJB methods as web services. But now I see a
JBossWS forum which tells me there are no WS tags, and I am confused.

Summary: Lost content after the last HTML entity.

Initial Comment:
In nukes-1.1.0-RC3-src is following problem in the
comman HTML content edit module.

If you use chars like €, ß, á ... all text after the
last replaced HTML entity like euro;, szlig;,
agrave; ... will not be displayed.

The problem is in
org.jboss.nukes.common.util.EntityTable.convertEntities(String).

Fixed class is attached.

After replace and rebuild, you must put the
nukes-lib.jar from nukes/output/lib/ to your
deploy/nukes.ear/ directory.

 because there is
  usually no way to achieve Isolation, but you can get close to that.

  When it comes to the telco service

  infact any BPM scenario), I've solved this problem before using a
  single JCA adapter holding tx state and undelying Mbeans that
  understand particular technologies (e.g. setting routes on
 switch X,
  providing webspace for a user, ...). The mbeans had to implement a

  So you could design in your flow (or simply call from your

  hand-code):

  Begin
  do-something-on-external-resource-A
  do-something-on-external-resource-B
  do-something-on-external-resource-C
  sendJMSMessage
  updateDB
  do-something-on-external-resource-D

[JBoss-dev] [JMX on JBoss (JBoss/JMX)] - Re: Transactional MBeans

2004-09-20 Thread ivelin
One option that I discussed with Scott and might be feasible hopefully without major
refactoring is to implement a persistence manager that stores attibutes in JBossCache.
JbossCache would take care of ACIDity, replication and storage.

[JBoss-dev] [EJB on JBoss] - Writing Custom Interceptor

2004-09-20 Thread paper57
I would like to write a custom interceptor to perform application specific logging.

I would like this logging to occur outside of the current transaction, as otherwise
the logging (to a database) will be potentially rolled back with the transaction.

What is the best way to accomplish this?

Thanks in advance.

[JBoss-dev] [JBossWS] - Re: Difference between JBoss.NET and JBossWS

2004-09-20 Thread tdiesler
Have a look at the JBossWS/JBossNet wiki.

http://www.jboss.org/wiki/Wiki.jsp?page=JBossWS

Here is the README from CVS

JBossWS
===

   Is the J2EE-1.4 compatible web service implemenation in JBoss. It is installed in
the all and default configuration.
   This implementaion will be developed further and eventually replace JBoss.NET

   Why use JBossWS
   ---

  * develop/deploy portable web services
  * access the SOAP message from handlers and endpoints via SAAJ
  * transactional handlers

JBoss.NET
-

   Is an early jboss web service project developed by Dr. Christoph Jung. By default
it is not installed
   in a jboss configuration. JBoss.NET has entered maintenance and will not be
developed further.

   Why use JBoss.NET
   -

  * use your existing non j2ee webservices in jboss
  * web service access to SFSB and JMX
  * mail transport
  * axis style wsr deployments
  * easy deployment using xdoclet

HOWTO switch between JBossWS/JBoss.NET
--

   Before you can use JBoss.NET you need to remove JBossWS and install JBoss.NET
manually.
   Here is what you need to do

  | !-- delete jboss-ws4ee implementation --
  | delete dir=${jboss.home}/server/${server}/deploy/jboss-ws4ee.sar/ /
  | delete file=${jboss.home}/client/jboss-ws4ee-client.jar /
  |
  | !-- install jboss-net implementation --
  | copy todir=${jboss.home}/client file=${build.lib}/jboss-net-client.jar
overwrite=true /
  | copy todir=${jboss.home}/server/${server}/deploy/jboss-net.sar
overwrite=true
  |   fileset dir=${build.lib}/jboss-net.sar /
  | /copy
  |

   If you work from the source, there are 'deploy' targets in the jboss.net/webservice
module respectively

What Axis version is used
-

   Both implementations use a modified version of the axis-1.1 release that
temporarily lives in module webservice
   for transparency and debugging reasons.

   Q: Why do you use an out of date axis release?
   A: At the time J2EE certification was due, using Axis-1.2beta was technically no
option

   Q: What will become of the axis fork?
   A: Nothing, we do not plan to develop it further. Instead we prefer to focus on an
idependent SOAP implementation
  that integrates better with the overall JBoss architecture (SOAP as invocation
path) and is more geared towards
  the specific J2EE requirements, which Axis is not.

[JBoss-dev] [Caches on JBoss (Caches/JBoss)] - Re: JBoss Distribute Cache's error?

2004-09-20 Thread norbert
the NPE is due to regionManager being null in LRUPolicy.nodeAdded(Fqn):

  | public void nodeAdded(Fqn fqn)
  | {
  | if(fqn.equals(ROOT))
  | return;
  | if(log_.isDebugEnabled())
  | log_.debug(nodeAdded(): fqn-  + fqn);
  | Region region = regionManager_.getRegion(fqn.toString()); -- this line!
  | region.setAddedNode(fqn);
  | }
  |

I wonder how this is supposed to work at all:

in TreeCache.startService() the Cache is populated by calling fetchStateOnStartup()
before the EvictionPolicy is going to be initialized (by notifyCacheStarted() a few
lines later...). Despite the fact it's surprising that fqn.equals(ROOT) apparently
evaluates to true, the LRUPolicy just cannot populate it's regions as long it hasn't
seen it's config yet...

to workaround the NPE you can set FetchStateOnStartup to false and call
TreeCache.fetchState() after having called TreeCache.start();

[JBoss-dev] [AOP on JBoss (Aspects/JBoss)] - Re: Clustering and dynamic AOP

2004-09-20 Thread Bill Burke
You may be able to use JBossCache. I'm not sure if you can register to listen for
cache changes (so that you can update the aspectmanager), but you could use JBossCache
and use JGroups to send a notification to the cluster to update the AspectManagers.

What Im REALLY interested in is a DEFAULTS repository for metadata and annotations
that can be VM and cluster wide.

No, this is the expected behavior. A filter initiated login does nothing for the
security context in terms of subsequent web requests. It simply establishes the
security context for other calls into the app server. You need to use the servlet
declarative security model using the web.xml descriptor if you want getUserPrincipal,
and isUserInRole calls to work in the web tier.

[JBoss-dev] [Management on JBoss] - Closing DataBaseManager shutdowns JBoss4.0 too

2004-09-20 Thread ctaunk
I'm sorry if this is not the right place to post this. I couldn't find any other
relevant link on the JBoss web site.

If you close the DataBaseManager; it also shuts down the JBoss server. This is
reproducible with the 4.0 release version.

You can start the DataBaseManager using the jmx-console.

[JBoss-dev] Axis version in JBOSS 4.0

2004-09-20 Thread Sastry Malladi
I've a question regarding the axis version in JBOSS 4.0.
The AXIS source in jboss is under jaxrpc/src/main, based on what I've seen.
Howerver, some of the classes don't match with any of the axis releases.
As an example,
org/apache/axis/attachments/AttachmentPartImpl. The corresponding class
in the source directly downloaded
from axis is, AttachmentPart, in the same package. I checked in three
differept places (axis 1.1, axis 1.2 beta and
the latest cvs tree) and they all have AttachmentPart, but the
corresponding one in the jboss source tree is AttachmentPartImpl. It's
not just a renaming, I see code changes as well.

So my question is, where did this version of classes axis come from ?
Are these the changes made by JBOSS on top of axis ?
(Note that I'm not talking about jboss-net sources, but the contents of
axis-ws4ee.jar, which are from jaxrpc/src/main directory)

Thanks,
Sastry

Thanks. Is there a document/change_notes that describes the changes done
in this branch ?
I'm trying to figure out if axis, as directly downloaded from Apache
site, can be used with jboss 4.0 and if
so, what fixes/features will I lose if I don't use the Jboss's version.

Ok, don't know why I could not match up the source but the
attached file looks correct. The problem is inconsistent
acquisition order of the two locks, m_cacheLock and cache id
BeanLock.

AbstractInstanceCache.get
- synchronizes(m_cacheLock)
- CachePolicy.insert()
...
- LRUEnterpriseContextCachePolicy.ageOut
- AbstractInstanceCache.release
- AbstractInstanceCache.tryToPassivate
- BeanLock.sync()
+ deadlocked waiting for BeanLock

LRUEnterpriseContextCachePolicy$OveragerTask.run
- AbstractInstanceCache.tryToPassivate
- BeanLock.sync()
- synchronizes(m_cacheLock)
+ deadlocked waiting for m_cacheLock

We have double checked that the source code we have
(which matches the stack trace) is identical to a fresh
download of 3.2.3 from SourceForge.

I've attached a copy of
LRUEnterpriseContextCachePolicy.java which is revision
1.18.2.6. We believe this is the one shipped as JBoss 3.2.3.
If this is not the right version, could you please identify which
version was shipped as part of JBoss 3.2.3.

FWIW, the following version was printed on the server log.

This is a conflict between the age and size based cache
eviction policies, however, this has been fixed as of 3.2.2
and the thread dump you have for the
LRUEnterpriseContextCachePolicy does not match that version.

[JBoss-dev] [AOP on JBoss (Aspects/JBoss)] - Re: Unable to figure out calledmethod of a caller pointcut

2004-09-20 Thread Bill Burke
The caller pointcut should not be called.You can use the -report switch with the
precompiler (the ant task would be report=true) and it will dump out all matching
joinpoints and the bindings that they are attached to.

a) are you using a call pointcut anywhere? It looks like you are. (or that you did).

b) Are you using the precompiler? Clean all your classfile and recompile everything.

If you can get a small testcase that reproduces the bug, please post it here.

RE: [JBoss-dev] Axis version in JBOSS 4.0

2004-09-20 Thread Scott M Stark
No, you would have to diff the codebases. The axis codebase cannot
be used in place the what we ship with for the ws4ee impl. There
were way too many problems with the message processing to create
a stack that passed the cts tests with both the 1.1 and 1.2 axis
codebases.

 Thanks. Is there a document/change_notes that describes the
 changes done in this branch ?
 I'm trying to figure out if axis, as directly downloaded from
 Apache site, can be used with jboss 4.0 and if so, what
 fixes/features will I lose if I don't use the Jboss's version.

In 1.7.2, you can add -noexit to the args you pass into DatabaseManager.main() and
it won't quit...

[JBoss-dev] [ jboss-Bugs-1031568 ] ClassCastException in AttributeChangeNotificationFilter

Summary: ClassCastException in AttributeChangeNotificationFilter

Initial Comment:
In JBoss 3.2.5, the isNotificationEnabled method of
javax.management.AttributeChangeNotificationFilter
throws a ClassCastException when passed an argument
that is not of type AttributeChangeNotification. The
JMX 1.2 specification indicates that, as an
implementation of NotificationFilter, it should return
false in this case.

The class
com.itgssi.gatejmx.support.StructureChangeNotification
referenced in the exception trace in the attached
console log is a custom implementation of
javax.management.Notification. The exception occurs
when an application XMBean passes a
StructureChangeNotification to sendNotification.

Summary: Classloader problems between 3.2.5 and 4.0.0

Initial Comment:
Tried using both default and standard JBoss 4.0 configs.

Description:

Classes seem to be loaded, first come first served, and
aren't overridden based on SAR.

SAR S1:
META-INF/jboss-service.xml
Axis.jar
MBean1.jar

SAR S2:
META-INF/jboss-service.xml
Axis.jar
MBean2.jar

S1 and S2 contain different versions of Axis. S1 and S2
do not have MBeans in common. S1 is loaded before S2.
The S1 version of the Axis classes are used within
calls to S2's MBean. This is causing NoSuchMethodErrors
because of differences in sigs between Axis versions.

This should be easily reproducable by a developer.
Likewise in my case I use a different version of
commons-logging. My SAR contains the commons logging
jars, and is loaded before JBoss'
jbossweb-tomcat50.sar. This causes the following error
on shutdown:

15:30:19,830 ERROR [HostConfig] Error undeploying web
application at context path
java.lang.NoSuchMethodError:

...

If you need more information to verify this, let me
know what to do and where to go to do it.

Thanks,
Jim

Summary: SAR classloader problems in 4.0.0

Initial Comment:
Tried using both default and standard JBoss 4.0 configs.

Description:

Classes seem to be loaded, first come first served, and
aren't overridden based on SAR.

SAR S1:
META-INF/jboss-service.xml
Axis.jar
MBean1.jar

SAR S2:
META-INF/jboss-service.xml
Axis.jar
MBean2.jar

S1 and S2 contain different versions of Axis. S1 and S2
do not have MBeans in common. S1 is loaded before S2.
The S1 version of the Axis classes are used within
calls to S2's MBean. This is causing NoSuchMethodErrors
because of differences in sigs between Axis versions.

This should be easily reproducable by a developer.
Likewise in my case I use a different version of
commons-logging. My SAR contains the commons logging
jars, and is loaded before JBoss'
jbossweb-tomcat50.sar. This causes the following error
on shutdown:

15:30:19,830 ERROR [HostConfig] Error undeploying web
application at context path
java.lang.NoSuchMethodError:

at

...

If you need more information to verify this, let me
know what to do and where to go to do it.

Thanks,
Jim

[JBoss-dev] [Management on JBoss] - Re: Closing DataBaseManager shutdowns JBoss4.0 too

2004-09-20 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Slightly off topic:

Elias, can you apply your changes (including your other recent changes)
to the other active branches
Branch_4_0 and jboss-head

If you only apply them to jboss-3.2 they will get lost.
It also causes a big problem for other people who want to port fixes in the same
classes.

Steps to reproduce:
Download and extract dummy.sar.jar and dummy1.sar.jar into
your JBoss deploy directory. Start JBoss, notice the
NoSuchMethodError. This does not happen when the dummy
MBeans are deployed alone.

The SARs both use a class Hello. The signature of Hello is
different for each SAR. The MBean within each SAR is
different and makes the correct call to the Hello class
shipped within the SAR (Hello.jar, Hello1.jar).

It appears that once the Hello class is loaded, all calls to
Hello will used this class, even if a new Hello class ships
within a jar contained within a new SAR.

[JBoss-dev] [ jboss-Bugs-1031571 ] SAR classloader problems in 4.0.0

Summary: SAR classloader problems in 4.0.0

Initial Comment:
Tried using both default and standard JBoss 4.0 configs.

Description:

Classes seem to be loaded, first come first served, and
aren't overridden based on SAR.

SAR S1:
META-INF/jboss-service.xml
Axis.jar
MBean1.jar

SAR S2:
META-INF/jboss-service.xml
Axis.jar
MBean2.jar

S1 and S2 contain different versions of Axis. S1 and S2
do not have MBeans in common. S1 is loaded before S2.
The S1 version of the Axis classes are used within
calls to S2's MBean. This is causing NoSuchMethodErrors
because of differences in sigs between Axis versions.

This should be easily reproducable by a developer.
Likewise in my case I use a different version of
commons-logging. My SAR contains the commons logging
jars, and is loaded before JBoss'
jbossweb-tomcat50.sar. This causes the following error
on shutdown:

15:30:19,830 ERROR [HostConfig] Error undeploying web
application at context path
java.lang.NoSuchMethodError:
org.apache.commons.logging.LogFactory.release(Ljava/lang/ClassLoader;)V

at

...

If you need more information to verify this, let me
know what to do and where to go to do it.

Thanks,
Jim

This problem prevents my application from running due to
conflicts with other deployed JBoss SARs. Bumping priority
as a result.

Steps to reproduce:
Download and extract dummy.sar.jar and dummy1.sar.jar into
your JBoss deploy directory. Start JBoss, notice the
NoSuchMethodError. This does not happen when the dummy
MBeans are deployed alone.

The SARs both use a class Hello. The signature of Hello is
different for each SAR. The MBean within each SAR is
different and makes the correct call to the Hello class
shipped within the SAR (Hello.jar, Hello1.jar).

It appears that once the Hello class is loaded, all calls to
Hello will used this class, even if a new Hello class ships
within a jar contained within a new SAR.

[JBoss-dev] [Caches on JBoss (Caches/JBoss)] - NullPointerException, Map and values().iterator()

2004-09-20 Thread umk
I'm trying to figure this one out:

Person person = new Person();
  | person.setHobbies(new HashMap());
  | Iterator i = person.getHobbies().values().iterator();
  |
  | Util.getClusterCache().putObject(/test, person);
  | person = (Person)Util.getClusterCache().getObject(/test);
  |
  | i = person.getHobbies().values().iterator();
  | ...
  | public static synchronized TreeCacheAop getClusterCache(){
  | if(treeCache == null){
  | try {
  | treeCache = new TreeCacheAop();
  | PropertyConfigurator config = new PropertyConfigurator(); //
configure tree cache.
  | config.configure(treeCache, META-INF/replSync-service.xml);
  | treeCache.startService();
  | } catch (Exception e) {
  | traceLog.fatal(Error while initializing JBoss cache, e);
  | }
  | }
  | return treeCache;
  | }

Why does line 8 (.values.iterator()) cause a NullPointerException but line 3 doesn't?

This is the expected behavior and is seen in 3.2.5. These
sars are not scoping their classes as is required when
isolation is needed. When proper scoping is configured using
the the jboss-service.xml loader-repository, such as:

loader-repository
   jboss.test:sar=dummy
/loader-repository

both sars startup fine:

22:30:26,061 INFO  [STDOUT] Starting: Dummy
22:30:26,061 INFO  [STDOUT] Hello
22:30:26,171 INFO  [STDOUT] Starting: Dummy1

[JBoss-dev] [Nukes Development] - JBoss Nukes and JBoss 4.0

2004-09-20 Thread sgwood

With the new JBoss release, I was wondering what the upgrade path for Nukes will be
now. I know jae and others are looking to get Nukes working under 3.2.5, but what is
the path to JBoss 4.0?
