I already modify all jar manifests when a release is done to tag them with the
jboss release info. If a jar actually uses the version manifest (and few do)
its preserved, but the implementation headers are updated. Picking the

[JBoss-dev] [JBossCache] - Proposal for JBoss Cache events

2005-01-20 Thread twundke
Bela and Ben,
I'd like to put forward an idea for JBoss Cache. However, first let me describe
what I'm doing.

I have a distributed application that uses JBoss Cache to distribute data to
all nodes. I'm using AOP for all cache access, synchronous replication,
transactions with read committed locking and separate file-based cache loaders.
The application is also standalone, with no application server etc.

Now, to my current problem. The application is event-driven, so when updating
an object I want to send an event to my event manager on each node. The
ordering of events is also important, so each local event manager should
receive events in the same order.

What I'd like to propose is that the cache have the ability to associate an
event with a transaction, and on commit that event will be propagated by the
replication manager, and then sent to some local class via an interface. Now,
ordinarily I wouldn't propose this as something that a cache should do, but
with the use of AOP it becomes more important. It's ultimately AOP that allows
me to write my application the way I have (and it's a great mechanism for data
distribution!), but the lack of object-based event handling, as opposed to
Node-based events (ie. the TreeCacheListener) is limiting.

I've had a good look through the code, and have scraped together something that
works, just to demonstrate to myself that it can be done. However, obviously it
needs to be discussed with you guys in order to find an appropriate way to
integrate it into the current structure (or even at all, although I'm really
hoping that you guys allow this to happen! :-).

Here's a rough overview of what I did to get it working.

TransactionEntry.java
- Add an Event attribute that has associated set() and get() methods.

TransactionTable.java
- Add set() method for Event.

EventReceiver.java *new*
- An interface defining eventReceived(Event) that is called when an event is
generated after commit.

EventInterceptor.java *new*
- Registers a synchronisation handler in invoke() if there's a transaction.
- In afterCompletion(), if we're committing then it retrieves the event and
calls EventReceiver.eventReceived(Event).

TreeCache.java
- Add set() and get() methods for the EventReceiver
- Add the EventInterceptor into the chain just before CallInterceptor. It needs
to be higher
than ReplicationInterceptor so that it gets called on the remote nodes.

ReplicationInterceptor.java
- In beforeCompletion(), adds the event to the argument list of the remote
prepare method.
- In replicate(), extracts the event and passes it to handlePrepare().
- In handlePrepare(), sets the event into the transaction entry.

Currently I just set the event by calling
TreeCache.getTransactionTable().setEvent( treeCache.getCurrentTransaction(),
myEvent ). This would obviously change.

So, what are your thoughts on this whole idea? I'm happy to take this offline
if you want to discuss it further, although I guess this is actually the
"development" forum :-)

Note that I'm also volunteering to write all of the code for this. I'm not
asking you guys to do that :-)

Tim

[JBoss-dev] [Design of JBoss Internal Benchmarking] - Re: SPECJAppServer 2002 Driver fails

2005-01-20 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I had this same problem when running the driver into linux.

It was and wasn't related to classpath.

At jboss32.env at /config directory you have the Classpath line.

The default file has ; instead of :

That makes the driver.sh read some variables wrongly at jboss32.env what make
it fail.

Please let me know how it goes.

[JBoss-dev] [Design of JBoss Build System] - Re: New Build in JBoss-Head

2005-01-20 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
The only problem I see is that we can't (shouldn't?) modify the manifest of
thirdparty libraries. So you would only get the indirect dependencies of jboss
libraries. Perhaps this is not a big deal, though.

[JBoss-dev] [JBossCache] - Patch for DummyTransactionManager.java

2005-01-20 Thread twundke
Here's the second of my patches.

The DummyTransactionManager uses a ThreadLocal to store transactions. However,
the manager then stores a Map in the ThreadLocal, containing transactions keyed
by Thread. Perhaps I'm missing something, but as far as I can see the Map just
isn't needed as ThreadLocal stores values per thread itself.

Here's a patch against revision 1.14 that removes the offending code.

[JBoss-dev] [JBossCache] - Patch for Node.java

2005-01-20 Thread twundke
I've been having a pretty in-depth look at the JBoss Cache code, and have found
a number of small problems that I've fixed. I'm wasn't quite sure whether I
should be using Jira or the forum to distribute patches, so I'll give the forum
a go to start with.

When a new cache starts and retrieves the transient state, Node objects are
created--by the serialisation process--using the no-arg constructor. This
constructor calls init(), which creates the IdentityLock object using "new
IdentityLock(cache_,fqn)". The problem is that the fqn is never set on the
IdentityLock (as the Node doesn't know the fqn at this point), which means that
all IdentityLock messages show "null" as the fqn. Here's a patch on revision
1.60 that fixes the problem by creating the lock in readExternal() rather than
in the constructor.

threads locally. It doesn't seem to support the transaction isolation levels on
a cluster-wide basis (ie. all locking is local until commit() is called). My
testing (which I admit hasn't been overly extensive) seemed to support this
assertion. This is actually fine in my situation, but if it truly doesn't
support multiple local threads then that's not so good.

I'm stuck with using the cache in standalone mode (ie. no app server), so does
anyone have any suggestions about other possible transaction managers?
Otherwise I fear that I might be the one having to update the
DummyTransactionManager! :-)

Tim

Did I miss something?

[JBoss-dev] [Design of AOP on JBoss (Aspects/JBoss)] - Re: AOPC question on the inner tag

2005-01-20 Thread nthx
As depends on first, all you need is only to compile needed plain _Java_
files - including aspects you want. Put then, every compiled *.class file into
your "build" directory and run on that directory.

Here snippets from my build.xml:

  |
  |
  |
  |
  |
  |
  |
  |
  |
  |
  |
  |
  |
  |
  |
  |
  |
  |
  |
  |
  |
  |

Of course you know, you may also use regular expressions inside jboss-aop.xml.
This might help.
And how many of those aspects, source files do you have anyway?
Or/and how much memory do you have?

Tomasz

[JBoss-dev] [Design of JBoss Admin Console] - Re: Project Structure

2005-01-20 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
In order for jboss-admin-console to use the new build system, I'll need to
merge it from head. I was hoping we could get things sorted out well in head
before we had to start back-porting.

However, so long as jboss-admin-console has a shallow dependency tree, I don't
think this would be that big of a deal. My understading from charles is that
he needs jmx apis, so it would need to include j2ee(?). So it would include
adding the following to jboss-4.0.

  | jboss-as/jbossbuild.xml
  | j2ee/jbossbuild.xml
  | common/jbossbuild.xml
  | tools/etc/jbossbuild/tasks.xml
  | tools/lib/jbossbuild.jar
  |

Alternatively, Charles could use a simple non-integrated build (with local
/lib?) and integrate with the new build system later.

[JBoss-dev] [Design of JBoss Admin Console] - Re: Admin Console Web-tier technology

2005-01-20 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
A bit more meat on the bones of the web-tier design:

This will be a Struts-based web application using JSP's for rendering the view.
Struts Actions and Forms will be packaged by component area, e.g. Datasource,
JMS. The view layer will use css for layout and formatting, using tables where
necessary. Tiles will be used to pull together the various page components,
e.g. Headers, Menu, Footer, Main, into a single page.

Client side validation will be used for simple field validation. The bulk of
the data entry validation will be done on the server side and will be
encapsulated in classes which do not depend on the Struts framework.

For authentication and authorization a similar mechanism will be put in place
as we have today for the web-console and jmx-console. By default security
constraints will be commented out in the web.xml. If security is enabled the
authentication method used will be BASIC. A new security domain will be added
to conf/login-config.xml using UsersRolesLoginModule and default
users.properties and roles.properties will be provided.

The application will obviously be packaged as a WAR file with all web-tier
related classes appearing in web-inf/classes, rather than a separate jar.

Thanks

[JBoss-dev] [Design of JBoss Admin Console] - Datasource Component Design - Updating JBoss AS

2005-01-20 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
So having poked around the JCA User list I'm suggesting the following algorithm
for creating a new Datasource through the Admin Console:

1) User enters all relevant info in the Admin Console and uploads a new driver
jar file.
2) The user commits the change.
3) The Admin Console submits the data and the driver jar file to the
DeploymentService through JMX, specifing a name, e.g. mydatasource, for the
datasoure and a template name which the DeploymentService knows about.
4) The DeploymentService follows the specified template and builds a new sar
module with the following structure:

mydatasource.sar/
  | META-INF/jboss-service.xml ()
  | my-ds.xml (built from a velocity template, using the data provided to
the DeploymentService)
  | mydriver.jar (the jar file which was submitted to the DeploymentService)

4) The DeploymentService then copies this into the ./deploy directory.

My understanding of the DeploymentService is that it can do everything other
than handle driver jar files parts? Any thoughts on the difficulty of updating
it to do this.

Thanks

[JBoss-dev] [Design of JBoss Build System] - Re: New Build in JBoss-Head

2005-01-20 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I've hit a similar problem. Except with the testing.

Here's an example:

The kernel project contains some tests that use JBoss common's JBossXB
implementation.
It works fine for compilation in that all I need to include is jboss-common.jar.

But when it comes to do testing, I need to include the other dependencies
of jboss-common.jar for it to be able to instantiate the classes, namely
(in fact I only need a subset of these):

  |
  |
  |
  |
  |
  |
  |
  |
  |
  |

With the current build, this isn't a problem (I suppose it depends how you
define problem)
because the testsuite module just includes nearly all the modules and most of
thirdparty.

But I was thinking we could do better than that this by adding the dependencies
to
the manifest of the jar.
e.g. jboss-microcontainer.jar would have
Class-Path: jboss-common.jar, concurrent.jar

We could then automatically add these artifacts to the classpath when
running tests.

This information could also be useful at runtime, potentially allowing the
microcontainer to prevalidate the class dependencies.

Whether we use the spec defined Class-Path manifest entry (which has some
semantics
we may not desire) or define our own entry is up for debate.

[JBoss-dev] [Design of JBoss's Web Services Implementation] - Integrating with Amazon web services.

2005-01-20 Thread Jinxed
Hi All,

I have recently decided to take plunge with JBoss development and figured that
a good way of getting to learn the ins and out of web services maybe to create
a project which integrates with Amazons web services. I am getting a little
over whelmed with the capabilities of JBoss so I wondered if anyone here could
offer their guidance with my first steps.

I would like to create a simple nukes Portlet that interfaces to the web
services via SOAP/WSDL. I would also like to take as much advantage as possible
of the features of JBoss. I realize that I could make a portlet which just uses
ordinary SOAP/WSDL calls like any other client would but I get the feeling that
I am missing a whole load of JBoss functionality out and reinventing the wheel
(badly).

Anyway if anyone could enlighten I would be most appreciative.

Regards,

J

[JBoss-dev] [Design of JBoss Admin Console] - Re: Versioning of Deployment

2005-01-20 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Here is an option for how the commit/rollback might work in the web-tier:

1) After a change is made through the Admin Console a new menu/navigation item
appears which says "Pending Changes".
2) Clicking on this item will take you to a page that says "You have pending
changes to the JBoss server" and has three buttons:
2a) "Commit" button: pressing this sends all the cached configuration changes
to the DeploymentService. The user is returned to the "Home" page with a
message that the changes were successfully/unsuccessfully applied. The "Pending
Changes" menu item disappears.
2b) "Roll back" button: pressing this discards the cached configuration
changes. The user is returned to the "Home" page with a message that the
changes were discarded. The "Pending Changes" menu item disappears.
2c) "Cancel" button: pressing this the user is returned to the "Home" page. The
"Pending Changes" menu item remains.

Thanks

[JBoss-dev] [Design of JCA on JBoss] - Re: Factoring out the security logic

2005-01-20 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
So to answer your question.

The easiest way to do it now (without reimplemting the rest of the stack)
would be to make the CMProxy invoke getManagedConnection(subject, cri)
rather than allocateConnection, with an interceptor stack in front of that
method.

Besides the security interceptor there would need to be a ConnectionManager
interceptor that does the rest of what is done in allocateConnection at the
moment.

activation.jar isn't fast and moreover This smells like freaking ODBC/DM on
win32. If anyone has the itch, I have some really prelim structural code on my
drive for a replacemnet. Otherwise I have us most likely upgrading to the next
JavaMail (streams) for 1.0 and not starting this until 2.0.

Basic plan when we kick it off:

1. Create basic prototype
2. Create a set of strong unit tests with appropriate comments that should
generate the bullets in strong spec.
3. dress the comments with a wiki-based spec
4. Formalize the spec
5. Create peformance tests (for this its raw throughput in/out on supported
mail types)
6. Create a reference implementation that doesn't suck and has few/if any
dependencies.

[JBoss-dev] [Design of JCA on JBoss] - Re: Factoring out the security logic

2005-01-20 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
My suggestion is to have the ConnectionManagerProxy
invoke down an interceptor chain the result of which will be a connection handle
that can be returned from allocateConnection.

The interceptors would be something like:

CMProxy (as now)
Security
CachedConnectionManager (CCM) processing (on the return stroke)
Handle reference tracking (on the return stroke)
NoTx/Tx behaviour (for track-connection-by-tx and tx enlistment/synchronization)
SubPool selection
Pooling
ManagedConnectionFactory delegation to create or match an MC (ManagedConnection)

That is a rough mapping of what happens now.

There should also be an interceptor stack for the MC which would replace the
ConnectionListener (handling events like close/error/etc.)
and would be a better place to implement the CCM/handle reference
processing I show above.
I haven't analysed this part in much detail.

[JBoss-dev] [Design of JCA on JBoss] - Re: Factoring out the security logic

2005-01-20 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
There is currently quite a convoluted dance here, but essentially
want gets bound into jndi is a ConnectionFactory (like a DataSource)
that holds a reference to our ConnectionManagerProxy (necessary because
we need to have it serializable, i.e. it can disconnect/reconnect from the jmx
object).

dataSource -> ConnectionManager.allocateConnection(ManagedConnectionFactory,
ConnectRequestInfo);

Once we are inside that proxy we can do what we like. At the moment we
just delegate to the real ConnectionMananger implementation, a
BaseConnectionManager2
implementation.

The first thing this does (after some sanity checks) is get the subject then
invokes
getManagedConnection(Subject, ConnectionRequestInfo)
which just delegates to the pool after some ConnectionManager specifc
processing.

Finally, after it gets the managed connection it asks it for a connection handle
and does the necessary book keeping to keep track of references and handle
errors.

[JBoss-dev] [Design of JBoss Admin Console] - Re: Admin Console Architecture (medium-long)

2005-01-20 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
So to summarize what I understand from the discussion so far:

1) The Admin Console is going to update JBoss AS using the DeploymentService
2) The Admin Console is going to start out not knowing anything about the JBoss
instance it is running on, but learns by having services created through it.

Well I have a problem, and solution, with 2).

The concept of the Admin Console "learning" works great for services such as
Datasources, i.e. it is reasonable for users to start with an empty list and
add new Datasources to it. However the concept breaks down when applied to
monolithic services such as JMS: It is not reasonable for users to create the
JMS service, e.g. specifying the cache manager and security manager settings,
from scratch. The Admin Console must be able to find the existing settings and
display them. So how can the Admin Console find these settings?

Answer: JMX. For monolithic services, e.g. JMS, Tomcat, JTA Transaction
Service, we can use hard-coded ObjectName's to locate MBeans and from those,
all the necessary information should be available. Specifying the ObjectNames
in a configuration file would allow us to update them if for some reason they
changed between versions of JBossAS.

For example, lookup the MBean "jboss.mq:service=DestinationManager" and from
there you can get references to the JMS Cache Manager, Persistence Manager and
State Manager (but oddly not the Security Manager?). These MBeans provide all
the information you could possible want on the base JMS settings. In addition
doing a lookup of "jboss.mq:service=InvocationLayer, type=HTTP" gives you an
MBean with with all the JMS HTTPIL settings.

This approach does have an important implication: You should not change
settings via the jmx-console if you are also using the Admin Console. The
problem is that changes made through the jmx-console, which are mostly
transient, could be made permanent. For example,
1) Start JBoss up
2) Go to the JMX console and update the HighMemoryMark on
jboss.mq:service=MessageCache
3) Open up the Admin Console and browse to the JMS settings. You will see the
change made in 2)
4) In the Admin Console change the MaxMemoryMark on the CacheManager.
5) Commit the change in the Admin Console. You will persist the changes made in
both steps 2) and 4). This is unexpected behaviour and is therefore bad.

Thanks

[JBoss-dev] [Design of JCA on JBoss] - Factorying out the security logic

2005-01-20 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
In accord with the 'TODO: Interceptors' post, security needs to be factored out
to deal with run-as access. I created a bug report in jira about the JCA layer
not honoring the run-as identity from the web or ejb tiers:

http://jira.jboss.com/jira/browse/JBAS-1309

As mentioned there this could be hacked with another custom login module, but
even the existing CallerIdentityLoginModule is stretching the JAAS api too far.
Caller identity propagation including run-as can be handled much cleaner via an
interceptor.

The question is, is there a minimal refactoring we can do in the
BaseConnectionManager2 to support this in 4.0.x?

[JBoss-dev] [Design of Messaging on JBoss (Messaging/JBoss)] - Re: JBoss Messaging Core

2005-01-20 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
1) Persistence

anonymous wrote : I want to see some work done on the persistence layer, in
particular
  | the equivalent of these tasks for JBossMQ:
  | http://jira.jboss.com/jira/browse/JBMQ-11
  | These will be the most important aspects for performance and scalability
  | and they can't just be bolted on later without proper consideration of
  | how they should be plugged in.

The persistence support was only briefly addressed so far. Everything related
to persistence is "hidden" behind the MessageStore and AcknowledgmentStore
interfaces. I expect that their implementation will delegate the persistence
work to a PersistenceManager, which will the subject of various optimizations.

I created a new JIRA task for that:
http://jira.jboss.com/jira/browse/JBMESSAGING-18. It contains the initial
specifications (JBMQ-11 and JBMQ-12).

The corresponding forum thread is
http://www.jboss.com/index.html?module=bb&op=viewtopic&t=59084

2) MessageCache

The MessageStore functions as a MessageCache too. It first caches the messages
in memory and/or reliably store if necessary. When I will detail the
implemetation of the MessageStore, this will become more obvious. See
"MessageStore/AcknowledgmentStore" section in the core design document:
http://www.jboss.org/wiki/Wiki.jsp?page=JBossMessagingCore

3) Message Ordering

Good point. http://jira.jboss.com/jira/browse/JBMESSAGING-19

4) Errors and Logging

What I usually do is that I use DEBUG statements for logging life-cycle related
operations and TRACE for logging individual requests. I will sprinkle them
around more liberally.

[JBoss-dev] [Design of Messaging on JBoss (Messaging/JBoss)] - Messaging Core - Persistence

2005-01-20 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
The MessagStore and AcknowledgmentStore implementations delegate the
persistence work to a PersistenceManager, which could be subject of various
optimizations. The initial version of the PersistenceManager will be based on
JBoss MQ's. When designing/implementing, the following aspects should be
considered.

1) Make use of the datasource mappings - similar what has been done for the EJB
timer

2) The use of the JTA transaction in JDBC2 is unnecessary since we are the only
one in the transaction branch. A local JDBC transaction i.e.
setAutoCommit(false) is enough. The transaction still needs suspending so we
are isolated from any wrapping transacton.

3) Make use of bulk writes to the database. This can be used for transactional
sessions where multiple messages are processed. But it could also be used where
people want to relax the absolute requirement that messages are persisted in
return for some performance improvement.

4) Lazily write the transaction record - it is only necessary when there are
actually persistent messages in the transaction.

5) Improve the sql - db indexes, etc.

6) JDBC3 is an attempt to reduce the cloning of messages for topics this could
be taken further with a more dedicated message store.

7) Lazy loading queues: Messages will only be loaded into the server when the
destination is activated and then only part of the messages are loaded (enough
to deal with the current throughput). An attempt was made to do this and
committed on Branch JBoss_3_2_5_JBossMQ_Lazy but the work was abandoned
(http://jboss.org/index.html?module=bb&op=viewtopic&t=46186). It does not deal
with the more difficult problems. In any case, the BasicQueues should be
talking directly with the PersistenceManager. In fact, I would favour that the
BasicQueue implementation is actually pluggable and determined by the PM to
allow better optimization between these two important layers.

8) A general review of where the persistence manager is invoked from the server
with an aim to improve performance.

The corresponding JIRA task: http://jira.jboss.com/jira/browse/JBMESSAGING-18

2005-01-20 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
If we were to change to a different implementation (e.g. the java5
implementations)
they need to have the same semantics.

They could also be implemented with Collections.synchronizedXXX()
except the behaviour of iterator.remove() is different to oswego concurrent in
some
places like the CopyOnWrite implementations.

[JBoss-dev] [Design of JBoss Portal] - Re: Postgresql configuration

2005-01-20 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Changing in $PORTAL/core/src/resources/test/hibernate.properties

hibernate.dialect to PostgreSQLDialect

And then generate the ddl by doing "sh build.sh ddl"

Should produce a ddl file for PostgreSQL that is conform to the current state
of your sources. I would recommend doing that instead of using those lines.

Then you need to change the XML files as stated by eztrip

[JBoss-dev] [Design of JBoss Portal] - Postgresql configuration

2005-01-20 Thread eztrip
In case anyone wants to know I have gotten JBoss Portal 2.0a working with
PostgreSQL. I'm attaching my setup.ddl script to make it easier. Because I
didn't feel like modifying all the code to use sequences, I just created a
single "hibernate_sequence" which allows the existing code to work. Normally I
would use different sequences for each table. I also simplified things by
using the PostgreSQL specific SERIAL datatype in place of AUTO_INCREMENT - they
do essentially the same thing. Also had to change BIT to BOOLEAN to get it
working and modified all the alter table/add constaint code as well.
Postgresql doesn't have an "if exists" so calling "drop table" will result in
an error message on your first run because those tables aren't there. You can
safely ignore these errors.

[JBoss-dev] [Design the new POJO MicroContainer] - org.jboss.util.CollectionsFactory

2005-01-20 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I'm using the CollectionsFactory methods that return EDO.oswego collection
implementations.

The thing is, those are highly concurrent implementations, but to make use of
them you need to relax locking (e.g. you don't need to lock when you
read/iterate).

But if you do that then you can't change to a different collection
implementations...

Not big deal, anyway.

2005-01-20 Thread tcherel
I did not find a way to fix it.
May be with class loader scoped ear, but I am not sure (I did not try).

[JBoss-dev] [JBossCache] - Exception on hot re-deploy of EAR using JBossCache (JBoss 4.

2005-01-20 Thread dbJav
I got the exact same problem with JBoss 4.0.1 JDK 1.4.2_06.

Is it because my application code does some:

  this.getClass().getClassLoader()

Anything we can do to avoid having to restart JBoss ?
The problem also appears only after redeployment.

I will be nice if cache data was not cleaned up upon restart.

The use case is basically to be able to change the configuration of an exisitng
cache without loosing the data contained in the cache.

Today, it is not cleaned up, but, for example, the eviction of the JBossCache
LRU policy does not work anymore until some kind of node event (like a get or
put) is done on the node.

[JBoss-dev] [Design of JBoss Admin Console] - Re: Versioning of Deployment

2005-01-20 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
"rauschuber" wrote : I agree with producing something useful yet with as few
cool features as possible in the first go-round. Versioning will be very
useful, but it doesn't have to be in the product for it to work.

Right. I think commit/rollback should be sufficient.

Thinking more on where the "cached configuration" should live, may be it makes
more sense to give the Admin Console its own persistent store. I think this
would be invaluable when dealing with a multi-node setup. You don't want to
have to go to each node in the cluster to retrieve cached configuration
information. Much better to keep it close to the Admin Console and then push
the changes out to each node on commit.

Agreed. I believe that the JSF/Portal based approach that the Admin Console
will eventually move to is the best way of supporting a plugin based

There are a number of issues with the contents of the thirdparty module in
sourceforge CVS:

1) Jars are duplicated within the module, e.g. commons-logging (v1.0.1-dev) is

thirdparty/apache/commons/lib/. If we need to maintain multiple versions of a

2) Not all jars in the thirdparty module are described in

folder. Plus it needs to be tidied up to remove stuff like this:

3) To quote Scott "The thirdparty and licenses contents needs to be kept
consistent and up to date. If this is not the case it needs to be fixed.". It
would be nice if we there was some automated process we could use to keep
things consistent. At worst we could update the thirdparty/README/README.txt to
include needing to update the thirdparty-licenses.xml. I think the biggest
incentive to get people to follow the README is if more of the existing
projects followed it. hsqldb is a great example but most of the other folders
just contains jars.
Off Topic... This is one of the reasons why I like www.ibiblio.org/maven, it
makes this whole area "Not Our Problem". But it is slow as molasses.

[JBoss-dev] [Design of JBoss Portal] - Dev : remember me feature

2005-01-20 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
- remember me feature -

Login process in the portal.

Introduction

In order to have the portal play nice with J2EE security it is not possible
to use directly the JBossSX API or the JAAS API. The reasons are various :

- specific to JBoss
- does not respect the portlet specification
- only form login can be used, no client certificate authentication
would work
- does not take advantage of JBoss SSO or tomcat SSO

Therefore the login must be processed by the servlet container.

Architecture and login protocol

Login in JBoss portal follows a well defined protocol which uses
the following elements :

- org.jboss.portal.core.security.Status object : defines the status of
a user. It is stored in the http session and has the following
attributes : username, password and a boolean signedIn. When the
user is not logged in the http session does not contains this object.
When a user performs a login it contains its username and password
and the boolean signedIn is false. The signedIn value
becomes true only if the user authenticates succesfully.

- LoginServet : this servlet initiates the login protocol. It takes
a mandatory user name and password as arguments and
an optional redirect url argument.

- AuthenticationServlet : this servlet is a protected resource of the
portal web application. It means that it can be reached only by
fully authenticated users. The role of this servlet is to
terminate the login protocol.

- FormLoginServlet : this servlet intercepts is used by the servlet
container which calls it whenever the user tries to reach
the AuthenticationServlet and is not authenticated.

The protocol is described now :

1. a request is made with the URL /login?username=foo&password=bar

2. the LoginServlet process the request :

2.a it creates a status object which username, passwords, signedIn
value false and put it in the http session

2.b it redirects to the authentication servlet with the URL :
/authentication?username=foo&password=bar

3. the user browser receive the redirection and process it

4. the servlet container receives the request and see that the user is
not authenticate so it redirect internally the call to the FormLoginServlet

5. the FormLoginServlet process the request, it simply redirects to
the URL /j_security_check?j_username=foo&j_password=bar which
has a special meaning for the servlet container in the
authentication process.

6. the servlet container process the j_security_check URL :

6.a it delegates the authentication to JBossSX which delegates in turns
to JAAS LoginModule stack

6.b we suppose that the authentication is succesfull, the servlet
container delegates the request to the AuthenticationServlet

6.c the AuthenticationServlet process the request, it sets the
boolean signedIn to true on the Status object which is stored in the
http session and it optionnally redirects to the optional redirect URL

Improvements :

We want to add the remember me feature in that protocol.
The remember feature authorize a user to not perform a login
a second time when it has succesfully authenticated one time in
the past. This feature uses the cookies to store a ticket that proves
the the user identity. The integration of that feature must not bypass
the authentication protocol. When a user arrives on the site with any
URL, it must execute the login protocol transparently.

The concept used are :

The ticket :
This object is an authorization ticket. It has the following attributes :
- expiration date
- a unique hash value
- username
- password

The ticket store :
Simply stores tickets. It is possible to create tickets and check
ticket validity. It also manage old ticket garbaging.

RememberMeServletFilter :
This servlet filter is positionned on any URL that own the remember
me property. It is responsible for managing the ticket stores
cookies. When a user comes in with a ticket cookie, it uses
the ticket store to check the cookie validity and if it is valid, it uses
the username and password to initiate the login protocol with
a redirection URL positionned to the actual incoming URL.

StoreTicketFilter :
This servlet filter is put in front of the AuthenticationServlet, it means
that it will be always executed once
the user has been fully authenticated by the servlet container.
The role of this filter is to create a ticket in the store for the current user.

This approach is non intrusive and does not need modification in the
login protocol explained before. It is also simple to remove for
people that don't want or need that feature on their portal infrastructure.

[JBoss-dev] [JBoss JIRA] Commented: (JBWEB-11) 505 error when connection from a .NET client

2005-01-20 Thread Remy Maucherat (JIRA)

Remy Maucherat commented on JBWEB-11:
-

I know about this issue: it is caused by improper implementation of
expectations by the .NET client.
Essentially, the client sends a POST with a 100-continue, but doesn't wait for
the expectation to suceed (likely Tomcat will not send a 100 response, but a
401), and sends the body of the request anyway.
This is not a bug in Tomcat.

Solution: disable keepalive, or add the .NET client user-agent to the list of
restricted clients.

[JBoss-dev] [Design of Mail Services] - Re: Error during forward from MailList member

2005-01-20 Thread cballew
The issue is that it's not a normal part of the JVM release which is why
everyone has their own.

The one I needed was the one that shipped with JBoss in my case in the
server/default/lib directory, the one I was getting was in my JVM's jre/lib/ext
directory. That's what created the compatibility issue between the mail.jar and
the activation.jar. That's just my particular case, but on windows with any
number of applications having their own copy it's a real case of the jar
equivalent to dll hell. "whereis" would have helped me track down the issue
quicker and was sorely missed on the windows box.

[JBoss-dev] [JBoss JIRA] Created: (JBAS-1307) Confusing stack trace on EJB deployment for missing optional method attribute

2005-01-20 Thread Jurjan-Paul Medema (JIRA)
Confusing stack trace on EJB deployment for missing optional method attribute

---

 Key: JBAS-1307
 URL: http://jira.jboss.com/jira/browse/JBAS-1307
 Project: JBoss Application Server
Type: Bug
  Components: EJBs
Versions: JBossAS-3.2.6 Final
Environment: JBoss 3.2.6, Java 1.4.2, Linux
Reporter: Jurjan-Paul Medema
 Assigned to: Scott M Stark
Priority: Minor

This bug is not critical, but unnecessary stack traces at DEBUG level make the
log look untidy and make both system administrators and developers spend
precious time investigating a problem that doesn't exist.

On deployment of my EJBs in JBoss 3.2.6 NumberFormatExceptions are logged
repeatedly with stack traces on DEBUG level:

2005-01-19 16:23:21,765 DEBUG [org.jboss.deployment.MainDeployer] create step
for deployment file:/home/jpm/jboss/jboss-3.2.6/
server/myproject/deploy/myproject-ejb.jar
2005-01-19 16:23:21,766 DEBUG [org.jboss.ejb.EJBDeployer] create,
myproject-ejb.jar
2005-01-19 16:23:27,172 DEBUG [org.jboss.metadata.MetaData] Ignoring
transaction-timeout 'null'
java.lang.NumberFormatException: null
at java.lang.Integer.parseInt(Integer.java:436)
at java.lang.Integer.parseInt(Integer.java:518)
at org.jboss.metadata.BeanMetaData.importJbossXml(BeanMetaData.java:790)
at
org.jboss.metadata.EntityMetaData.importJbossXml(EntityMetaData.java:341)
at
org.jboss.metadata.ApplicationMetaData.importJbossXml(ApplicationMetaData.java:729)
at org.jboss.metadata.XmlFileLoader.load(XmlFileLoader.java:175)
at org.jboss.ejb.EJBDeployer.create(EJBDeployer.java:462)
...

A relevant piece of the (XDoclet-generated) jboss.xml contained in the .jar
file looks like:

 MyEntity
 ejb/myproject/MyEntity
 ejb/myproject/MyEntity

  getId
  true

  getStatus
  true

...

  ...

So, my method-attributes don't contain the *optional*
element, which should be perfectly legal (it was in JBoss 3.2.1 anyway).

The following piece of JBoss code (from BeanMetaData.java, from line 787)
appears to be the culprit:

String txTimeout = getOptionalChildContent(maNode, "transaction-timeout");
try
{
   ma.txTimeout = Integer.parseInt(txTimeout);
}
catch (Exception ignore)
{
   log.debug("Ignoring transaction-timeout '" + txTimeout + "'", ignore);
}

I suggest that txTimeout should be tested for a null value before attempting to
parse it as integer. Apart from that, no stack trace should be logged for
something that can be legally ignored.

[JBoss-dev] [Design of the JBoss Web Container] - problem with session ids being different

2005-01-20 Thread dragonmage
Hello,

Can someone tell me how the logic for allocating session ids works?
In my application the session id is not always the same for two different
struts actions initiated from same client web browser and this causes problems
communicating session variables.
The problem seems to be timing related. It is worse when using remote server
with long ping times, but seems to go away when the reomote server is addressed
by ip address.

The problem rarely happens when server is 'close' - short ping time - but on
rare occasions the id is different.

thanks,

D

And is there any way to instrument Hibernate classes in compile-time, not in
the runtime?

[JBoss-dev] [Design of JBoss Eclipse IDE (dev)] - Cannot launch JBoss server from IDE

2005-01-20 Thread CliveHill
Using the run.bat file works fine, it runs java (1.4.2_05)

Trying to configure JBoss (4.0.1RC1) to start from eclipse it seems to use
javaw and gives this error:

Failed to boot JBoss:
java.lang.NullPointerException
at org.jboss.Main.boot(Main.java:93)
at org.jboss.Main$1.run(Main.java:405)
at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:534)

I suspect this is a configuration error, as I already hit, but overcame
classnotfound exceptions, but I can't find any documentation on how to
configure the JBoss server.

Thanks.
