By the way, Troy, both Mark and Erik really were attempting to help you resolve your
problem. Both by showing you how to find the answers yourself and by showing you how
to ask a question in such a way that shows that you are making an attempt to solve it
yourself and failing. The people that respond to questions on this list are very
knowledgeable, but will not volunteer to do your job for you.

The obnoxious statement was your referring to these folks replies as snide rather
than actually following the links provided and reading what was supplied to you.

Interesting that the consensus seems to be that my statement was obnoxious A little courtesy goes a long way, which point is apparently wasted here.

Did I offend someone? Apologies if so. That said, the people who responded negatively were not the subject of my post, until they spoke up and showed their own ignorance.

Defeats the purpose of a help mailing list, if newbies are too afraid of being flamed to post their question. But maybe all you big-brains know better than me...

Again, good luck to all.

  till i found the cancerous part.
  since i was having numberformat exception at
  Integer.parseInt , (which i hadn't in my code)
  i was supposing that the problem is related with
  the request parameters.
  finally i totally removed the code related with
  req parameters, i still had the same irritating error message.Then i came to
  understand that it was because of the MySQL database connection.
  i removed connection related code, add the
  request parameters related code, IT IS WORKING.
  nowtime to finish the job with the
  database connection
  thanks for you and for those guys who helped

numberformat exception" please

Ok, you hav eto check a few things, first, how do
you send the parameter to the page? POST or GET (default).

You cannot just comment the checks for null value
(since it can be in a class or something) without comment the whole block.
The easiest way should be to set a false in the start of you if
case...
like if(false  no != null
...)
this way, it will never go into that codeblock...

But since you have tested some, you might dont this
(or a similar way) and then you know that the problem isn't in just that
codeblock.

Have you tried (as a wrote before) to just take the
no part? excuding the sql statement and mysql driver a.s.o.
?
here is how I locates error if i can't find
them

1)
Start with all the code (you get the error)
2)
By the errormessage, guess where the error can be
3)
Try to set the variable in the code (not to make it dynamic) so you know
that it will work (test the sql statement sepratly also) Try setting all
variables that can be involved with the problem
4)
Start cut pieces of you code out and lay it in a notepad window (NOTE: Do a
backup of the source before or something so if your computer crashes, you
can restore it)
5)
Compile and test still same error? Go back to 4 and remove some more
code, do step 5 again
6)
now you have located a part of the code where the error probably is, and it
shouldn't be hard to figure out how to fix it (unless there is a hardware or
configuration error in another program, but as log it is a
code-error)

This method takes some time and I only use it when
I can't figure out what and where the problem is. When you find where the
problem is and dont know what to do, you know exacly what to ask someone,
knowing that it is the specific line that causes the
error

Since you get a error when you compile (what I can
see) the problem may lie in you apache config. I'm not good at all in
configuring apache but many others on the JSP-list seems to have a good hang
of it.

Hope I helped some

  You have the answer right there... check
  where it does a Integer.parseInt (line 414 and/or
  463)

  the strange thing is ,in my code there is
  no Integer.parseInt() method, but i
  guesssomewhereinthe code
  jsp automatically callsthat method.

  java.lang.NumberFormatException:
  mysql at
  java.lang.Integer.parseInt(Integer.java:414)
  at java.lang.Integer.parseInt(Integer.java:463)

  If you want to
  check no, justuse the
  firstpart of your code:

  Class.forName("org.gjt.mm.mysql.Driver");
  String
  no=request.getParameter("no");
  no=no.trim();if ((no!=null)
  (no.length()!=0)){out.println("the value of no : "+
  no);
  }

  The thing when you
  are looking for errors are to check a part

Re: Can anyone tell me how to unsubscribe?

2001-02-07 Thread Steve

I unsubscribed from this list once.

I kept getting messages for weeks afterwards.

Finally, I went to Sun's site and contacted one of the people
responsible for the list. He told me that there are so many users for
Sun's lists that the listserv software is always weeks behind
processing commands.

Sun has been pretty cognizant that supporting developers is a good way
to promote their products. They should run with that idea in this
case.

I hesitated for weeks before signing up for this list again because I
knew it would be a project to get off of it. I've also warned friends
about this.

I think it looks bad for Sun

Sun makes servers. Personally, I think they should donate one or two
more to their forums if it speeds things up.

One way to unsubscribe is find a black Rooster and free it in a jungle when
it is full moon night. Take a dip in a river and you will be unsubscribe.
Double check before you perform these tasks. :))

 Manne,
 re-use is much easier if the code is encapsulated in a good bean.

 I agree, just transferring code from a jsp page into a bean does not make
it
 re-usable. But, in the case of database handling, there is some code which
 is
 common like opening the connection, etc. What I do is to have a separate
 class which hides the details of connecting to the database etc. It also
 provides
 methods for adapting to different JDBC drivers (when using transactions,
 joins etc)
 and for adapting data values to the selected database.

 But solution 3. still seems the best, although a simpler architecture
could
 be ok if the app is very simple and the logic is not likely to be re-used
 in
 later projects.
 if one is learning jsp then it is ok.

 regards,
 Nagaraj.

  Ask yourself why you need to. People usually store
 them encrypted in
  cookies.

  Back before JSP and the servlet spec became
 popular, the session
 variables were often called server-side cookies. If
 you can be sure
 that the mechanism that keeps the variables isn't
 going to be exposed
 to the outside world, then it's relatively safe for
 use in
 trivial-security circumstances.  I suspect Lorena
 meant something like
 this. However, if the storage mechanism is
 relatively secure, then
 why bother storing the password? Why not just store
 the
 logged-in=true that somebody suggested?

  In more secure settings, what is often done is:
 the server side
 generates an encrypted temporary serial number that
 it hands to the
 browser (under SSL in any event, but). The server
 side keeps track of
 this info with a session variable with a short (5-10
 minutes) timeout
 that is refreshed with each request that comes in.
 This helps to
 narrow the possible window of vulnerability if the
 user walks away
 from the machine without shutting down the browser.

  Of course this *still* isn't very secure, but
 then again nothing
 taking place over a browser really is

Subject: Vector in JSP

Hi everyone,

I need to use a Vector to store strings in my JSP
page. This vector will store at least 1000 elements.
After that, if there are more than 1000, I want to get
rid of some old data and put the new elements in the
vector. I know if a vector grow too big, it will eat
up memory. Could anyone give me any suggestions on
how do I do it and if the 1000 elements vector is too
big?

Thanks

 Yup, weblogic contains all you need. One thing you might want to remember

Re: how to unsubscribe

2000-09-21 Thread Paul Harrison

Hi Vikas,

Here's the instructions from the original signon message:-

You may leave the list at any time by sending a "SIGNOFF JSP-INTEREST"
command to [EMAIL PROTECTED] You can also tell LISTSERV how you want
it to confirm the receipt of messages you send to the list. If you do not
trust the system, send a "SET JSP-INTEREST REPRO" command and LISTSERV
will send you a copy of your own messages, so that you can see that the
message was distributed and did not get damaged on the way. After a while
you may find that this is getting annoying, especially if your mail
program does not tell you that the message is from you when it informs
you that new mail has arrived from JSP-INTEREST. If you send a "SET
JSP-INTEREST ACK NOREPRO" command, LISTSERV will mail you a short
acknowledgement instead, which will look different in your mailbox
directory. With most mail programs you will know immediately that this is
an acknowledgement you can read later. Finally, you can turn off
acknowledgements completely with "SET JSP-INTEREST NOACK NOREPRO".

regards
Paul Harrison

 Hi!

 I have found that I can't ask the same Recordset field two times with
 getString() or equals. I get the SQL exception "no Data" on second try. Is
 this a rule or a mistake on my side?

 here is some code where it happens:

 try {
  String RSTB3000_Query = "SELECT ROUTING_AREA FROM TRADIUS.RSTB3000";
  rs = stmt.executeQuery(RSTB3000_Query);
  while(rs.next())
  {
   String selektiert = "";
   String Typ = rs.getString("ROUTING_AREA");
   if (Typ == "AGB ")
  {
selektiert = " selected";
   }
   out.println("\t\t\t\toption value=\"" + Typ + selektiert
+ "\"" + Typ);
  }
  rs.close();
 } catch(SQLException ex) {
  out.println("SQLException: " + ex.getMessage());
 }

 As you can see, I now create a String variable 'Typ' with the content of
 ROUTING_AREA, for not getting that error, but if I replace 'Typ' with
 rs.getString("ROUTING_AREA"), after second appearance I got 'no data'.

There are three copies of the instructions on how to unsubscribe at the bottom

Plus, every post you've received has included a copy of the same instructions,

Send and e-mail to mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]. In the body of the e-mail put:

The rest is automatic.

Subject: Writing a simple tag library...

Jason writes...

 I also pointed out that such a library has yet to be written.
 Not even a little demo one yet that I know of. That makes me suspect
 it's a hard task, but more importantly it implies that we're blazing
 new ground here and may not yet know enough about this technology area
 to define a good standard. We all know it's hard to make an early
 implementation the Right implementation. I'm not saying it can't
 happen.  Just be realistic.

I agree that examples, examples, examples, is what we need most at this
point.

We have been busy and have also had to find a simple and easy mechanism
for the distribution of even simple examples. We have found one in a
project within Jakarta and we expect to start placing very simple
examples there. This will not be "the standard library", the focus is
mostly on showing how to get started but I expect that some simple
useful tags will show up there too.

We will announce when the examples start being available.
