KR>I GOT it!

2008-10-12 Thread Martek Mississippi
With a lot of thanks to my old friend from my early USAF days, Kelly McGee,
I am now the proud owner of KR2 # N1333A. It is going to take a bit of a
critical eye and likely 12 to 18 months of work to get it where I would
consider it safe and airworthy, but the fact that it is right now in the
driveway is motivating. Two 1,000 mile trips (up to VA and back) in three
days is enough to make anyone need as many days of sleep, though. THUS..its
off to bed for this puppy, with dreams of KR2 dancing in my head!

PS..KR's trailer tow VERY stable! 70 MPH was the norm.

That was a lot of fun, and nice little trip to get together with two good
buddies I haven't seen in months. We got to see Black Magic in the basement,
watch a little of 36 Right (I think that's it) on the onboard DVD player,
and got a good education on glass cockpit components from the new
incarnation of Black Magic's instrument panel. See

clouds. It was another great trip in the KR time machine though...

For all who don't recognize the airplanes, both with the fifth bearing corvair,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=esEjCTLIe7Y that was Joe in the lead with Mark
hot on his tail on there way back out to PN and AL respectively. They stopped
by my home airport Sat. about 4. We went to a local Irish Pub and taste tested
a couple of their over 100 different varieties of root beer while having
dinner. We retired to my house and found ourselves spending most of the rest
of the evening hanging out in my garage around Black Magic.watching a movie
while in the garage, but I'll leave that for them to mention... Mark had some
pretty impressive numbers off his dynavibe, which he had hooked up on his
flight up. Sunday morning, after a nice breakfast, we returned to the airport
where Mark unhooked the dynavibe, which Joe took with him to balance his bird.
Hung out a while, then off they went.

Short behind the long story..keep building and when you do
fly...get out of your local patch and fly somewhere, anywhere,
anytime.that's what these fast airplanes do best!!

You guys keep gluing, I'll keep pounding and we'll all be up flying.

KR> Flight planner for iPhone or iPodTouch

2008-10-12 Thread Myron (Dan) Freeman
Hi Guys and Gals;

I just picked this up off of the X-Plane Tech list and thought some of you
number crunchers might be interested.

Austin Meyer is the producer/owner of the X-Plane Flight Sim program.

*

X-Planner is here for iPhone!

X-Planner is a flight-planner that runs no your iPhone or iPodTouch.

Here is how it works: You enter the performance parameters of your airplane
one time (takes maybe 15 minutes?)

Then after that you just enter the departure and destination for wherever
you are flying and the winds aloft. X-Planner will then show you your weight
and center of gravity with the take-off fuel on board and weight and gravity
at zero-fuel as a red line across the weight and balance envelope so you can
see if you will be within weight and balance for the entire flight! Finally
seeing if you are within weight and balance is easy and even kind of fun!

Then X-Planner will show you the time enroute and fuel burn for each
altitude so you can see how much fuel to put on board and how long the
flight will be and also know WHAT ALTITUDE IS THE MOST EFFICIENT

ALTITUDE TO FLY!!!

I am only charging $9.99 for this so it will pay for itself in fuel savings
in the first flight if it saves you even 2 gallons which I am sure it will.

So any pilot with an iPhone or iPod touch should get this for sure. It makes
doing the weight and balance FUN and shows you the BEST altitude to fly and
tells you exactly how much fuel to ask for before flight.

Pilots that do much flying and do NOT have an iPhone might consider an

iPodTouch for this application... It costs $229 at apple, which is

NOT exactly cheap but depending on how much flying you do you could easily
save $229 of fuel over time by knowing what altitude and power settings to
use on each flight based on he exact parameters of your airplane and the
current winds (which you enter for each flight).

Anyway, I use it before every flight 842X and it has saved me a lot of gas!
You should too!

Check it out at http://x-plane.com/

KR> N886MJ Flies Again!

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Jones
After almost two full months since my crank breakage, "Six Mike Juliet" flew
again this morning with the new Dan Weseman fifth bearing installed. I was at
about 200 feet off the ground when my mind said to me "wow, this engine has
never been this smooth on climb out". Then at 500 feet I made a precautionary
turn to downwind just in case the engine stopped. I continued a climb up to
3,500' over the airport constantly monitoring the engine gauges as I climbed.
All the while still being amazed at how smooth she was. I leveled off at 3,500'
and settled back for the ride. Then there was a hiccup in the engine for about
a second then she smoothed out and never missed a beat after that. I attribute
that to the possibility of some water condensation in the tank. At about 15
minutes into the flight the engine gauges read: Oil Pressure: 38, Oil Temp:
220, CHT: 300, EGT: 1300. Everything was right in line with my previous engine
readings except this time the Oil Temp was a little higher than what I was used
to seeing. I think this will go down as the engine breaks in. Prior to flight
and on a cold engine, I did a compression check and four cylinders read 80/80
and two read 79/80. I am using total seal rings. As the flight progressed, I
did some yanking and banking to check for engine vibration and was just
delighted as to how smooth she was. Next, I opened her up to 3400 rpm and when
I reached 160 mph, I pulled her up into a steep climb and again, there was no
vibration. I was truly amazed as my plane had never been this smooth. I leveled
off at 4,500' and trimmed her for hands off flight. She flew straight and
level. One thing I noticed was that flights before the fifth bearing, the stick
would vibrate when I released it and now there was no vibration in the stick at
all. Have our prayers all been answered with the fifth bearing? I sure hope so
but only time will tell. At 35 minutes in the air, I decided to bring her in
and check things out. My landing was something to be desired since I have not
flown in two months. Back at the hangar I removed the cowl and noticed some oil
at the front seal. Hopefully, this is just from installation and will go away.
A few more flights will determine that. However, I do have a definite leak at
the oil pump cover which must be dealt with soon. The oil from there left a
fine line oil streak on the fuselage bottom. It sure was good to be back in the
air and get that KRVair fix again.

KR> Re: Wing Walks.

2008-10-12 Thread Darren Crompton
After mulling over all the input (thanks) I decided to test it so I got the
KR off the bench again and fitted the canopy and seat. I stood behind the
left hand stub wing and had no real issue with swinging a leg in and then
getting out again so I decided to continue building without a wing walk. I
am 5' 11". The wings will be placarded with "NO STEP" etc and anyone
getting in or out will be doing so under my instruction anyway.
After a full weekend building I pretty much have a completed stub wing. I
will start the right hand one straight away and don't expect to have as many
updates on the site due to the repeated procedure.

All the best.

2008-10-12 Thread Eric Evezard
Mark and others. Thanks for drawing attention to the danger of carb float bowl
air pressure.I have twin Stromberg (Zenith) carbs, with the float bowls each
vented to the air intake, before the butterfly valves in the the carbs.Carb
heat is collected with scoops on the left and right exhausts near the
manifolds and ahead of the in line air filter. I think any excess pressure
will be relieved at the filter. If anything the system may introduce a slight
vacuum in the float bowls.Does this sound OK ?.The engine runs well and the
carb heat, does not seem to adversely effect the engine, even although there is
probably a slight ram air effect from the scoops facing the air flow when the
carb heat is applied.Does this sound OK netters.?

KR> KR2 at SWRFI

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Wegmet
Just my 2 cents (as it were). I have read some reluctance among the folks
that fly all of the KR series planes to seriously consider AirVenture; maybe
due to traffic concerns, "playing with the big guys", or whatever... You may
want to seriously reconsider attending.

Having said that, and maybe ticked off a bunch of you, please allow me to
explain.

I am 'new' to the plans built/kit built group. I went to Oshkosh last year
for the first time because I wanted to look at kit built airplanes... my
first thought before hand was that something built in someone's
garage/basement or whatever couldn't be a 'real airplane'.

Oshkosh taught me that I was way wrong!

If you love airplanes, you can find it there: Stinsons, Pitts, F-18's and
everything in between.

There is a reason that Whitman Field is the "Busiest Airport in the world
during AirVenture". And, no, I don't work for them.

It is too late for this year, but you guys have some fantastic planes...
show your colors dudes.

KR> Diehl nosewheel strut brace.

2008-10-12 Thread Randy Smith
It is easy er to ground loop a TD on pavement than
grass. Once you learn to fly a TD and get a little
time It will be 2nd nature.
When I started flying a KR TD I had 10 hrs in a PA11.
I now have over 1800 hrs in TD and Have never ground
looped. (I have come close) I do not feel I have any
more spacial flying abilities than anyone Else. All
you have to do is PAY ATTENTION until you shut her
down.

Mark,
Last year we had six KR's at Airventure. Did you not see them? Five of us
flew in together and another showed up later. We all camped out right there
on the EAA grounds. It is never too late if you really want to go.

2008-10-12 Thread Randy Smith
The last 8 trips to Oshkosh were planed the day before
I left.My last trip I called a friend Thursday am an
said lets go now. We stayed Friday and Sat. and flew
back to Dallas on Sunday. When you arrive there are
bulletin boards around with phone # of places to stay.
They also can help you at the sigh in desk or bring a
sleeping bag and tent. They have very good showers and
things on the field. One important thing to bring is
MONEY. Before you arrive get notoms Fly to Ripon keep
you mouth closed listen and follow directions. It is
not that hard.

I must admit that last year I was a member of the "dark-side" as I was
looking at GlasAir's, Lancair's, and RV's... sorry, didn't notice the KR's.
Also, I was only there on the last Saturday. I had to "fly" a '96 Firebird
at 2000 rpm (78 mph) on the ground [no less] to get there [it took 2 1/2
hours from Powers Lake WI].

I'll try to do better this year :-)

The only reason I can see for staying at a hotel instead of camping at
Oshkosh, the gathering, or Sun and Fun is if you have to take your wife to
be allowed to go and she refuses to camp.

Of course if that is your reason you need to reconsider your priorities.
After all, you build a KR to keep forever.

KR> project status

2008-10-12 Thread AVLEC
Jeff,
I made my turtle deck very similar to yours. I made a framework by cutting
four squares of 1/4'' ply all the same size. I marked out the turtledeck
shape at each of the four stations and then cut out the shapes. I then built
up a framework from a few 2x4 bits of scrap pine that positioned the four
plies at the correct distances from each other. Into this I forced a sheet
of the thinnest galvanized sheet I could find and fastened it in place. Into
this I laid up two layers of 200g BID.
while this was getting tacky I took a sheet of 3/8 foam and ripped it into
20mm strips. I then took these strips and laid them up onto the previously
laid glass using micro slurry as adhesive. It looks just like a classic
yacht hull when finished. After this had cured, I sanded the inside smooth
and laid up one layer of 200g BID (after vacuuming up all the dust). After
this had cured for two days I removed it from the jig/mould, trimmed it and
fit it to the fuselage. I havn't weighed it but it is extremely light and I
am sure that I could stand on top of it without it breaking. A bonus was the
outside surface is perfectly smooth and shiny so no sanding.

this I laid up two layers of 200g BID.
while this was getting tacky I took a sheet of 3/8 foam and ripped it into
20mm strips.

I am based at Waukesha, WI (KUES). We have a mini KR Gathering, cook out,
and all fly to Oshkosh as a group. However, this year, I am in the process
of moving and have to vacate my home here by July 13th. I am moving to
Stevens Point, WI (KSTE). Right now, I am not sure if my KR Mini Gathering
will be at Waukesha or Stevens Point. Either way, I will have the Mini
Gathering. If we still do it at Waukesha, those that arrive on Saturday,
including myself, can sleep in the hangar or you can camp out by the hangar
or get a hotel room. Personally, it is a very nice hangar and I will sleep
there on an air mattress. If we have it at Stevens Point, I have a T-hangar
there and hopefully will be in my new home by Airventure. So stay tuned for
more details to follow.

The KR Gathering is in Mount Vernon, Illinois (KMVN). Here is all the info:

I'm curious, Where would you put the wax paper or tape it that would not
interfere with the glue joint between the 5/8" material and the plywood? To
be clear, the goal that flipping would accomplish is to keep the 5/8"
material clean. I did not have a problem with gluing the side to the table
if that;s what you thought I was chiseling!

I'm not the wiz you're looking for but I think that's the very same
radio I put in the Tripacer. GREAT plug and play unit. It was
a direct replacement for what I had before.

I doubt if it's a squelch problem. That should affect receive only.
As I recall it had a squelch adjustment on the front panel. You
tune the radio to a "non-used" frequency and adjust the squelch
to eliminate any noise on the output. Presto, it's set.

I'm GUESSING you have a wiring problem. Antenna lead too close
to the intercom, poor ground, or something along those lines.
Are you nav and comm antennas too close or the wiring crossing
or crossed? I had great service for hundreds of hours from mine.
Don't give up on the unit.

I also recall it having a "test" button on the front panel. If you are
slightly out of range from an AWOS or are getting a broken signal
from some other transmitter, just hit the "test" button and it
overrides the squelch so you can hear a weak signal.

KR> Wings and wheels @ Alliance Oh

2008-10-12 Thread Joseph H Horton
Hey Guys,
Just got back from a day trip to Barber field in Alliance Oh.
Fro me it was the first real flight since the nose gear failure 3 weeks
ago. I have my original Sterba prop on and in the summer heat it is not a
stellar performer. Just to much pitch. Any way I didn't even decide if I
was going until after I had climbed a couple thousand feet this morning
and nothing went wrong. It was a nice flight out in post frontal air with
a head wind of about 15 mph. The 300 miles was done in about 2h 30 min. I
had to try 3 time to get her on the turf at Barber The 1st pass the plane
landing ahead of me took awhile to roll out and taxi to the exit. The 2nd
an ultralight that had been sitting on the side pulled out and started to
taxi down the runway just as I was flaring for touch down. I fire walled
it and made the pass on the right of him about 10 ft. above and less than
10 ft to his right just so he knew I was there.. Barber is the shortest
field I have tried and also grass. I was stopped and turned around with
abut 500 ft left.
Pete, Ron and the chapter there had a nice breakfast set up and
plenty of enthusiasm to go around. It was a beautiful day after a round
of storms that went though last night. A guy in a Peit was giving some
rides and there was some static displays. But the KR contingent ruled the
day. I got there abut 9:30 with Ken Jones and the pig arriving shortly
after. Larry Fleshner arrived around 10:30 with Mark Langford arriving
in his style with a nice fast low pass.. Joseph Snow arrived early
afternoon with his Q2 on a trailer and the covair mounted up front. just
to show and tell. He's a better man than me. That was a lot of work to
get a nearly completed airplane mounted to a trailed and hauled to a fly
inn for the day.
I left Barber field right behind Ken, but I just had to sneak up
from behind the guys and give them one little fly by and off for home.
The trip home was exactly 2 hours flight time burning just 4 gal/hr at
9500 ft. no tailwind but no head wind either. Unfortunately grass is not
where my plane should be. When I landed at home I heard a noise from the
front. Something had tore a chunk out of the bottom of the nose fairing.
But had a great time anyway and got to see some dear friends
I figure the 4 of us flew nearly a combined 2000 miles today to
be there for Pete's gang.
The flying and the friends really is better than the building of the
plane.

KR> acceptable Tolerances for building

2008-10-12 Thread Brad Payne
What is an acceptable tolerance while working on the alignment of the
fuselage? If I am 1/16 or 1/8 out of square (example. from center line to
outside of longeron on one side is 16" and the center line to other side is
16 1/8") is this acceptable?

I am having issues getting any more accurate then 1/8 or 1/16 while aligning
the the fuselage sides prior to gluing. I have tried making formers and
several clamping mechanisms. Am I being to picky not to accept a 1/16"
difference?

A big THANK YOU to Pete and Ron and all the members of EAA Ch. 82
for their wonderful hospitality and generosity at the fly-in at Barber Field
at Alliance, Oh.

477 miles straight line with detour for fuel going over. Flight time was
3 hours 20 minutes with tailwind. Awesome breakfast, great weather,
barley water in the evening, another good meal, hotel room, another
good breakfast, formation with Mark Langford for two hours on the
return, stopped in for a milk shake at a small grass strip with lots
of neat airplanes, another stop at the local "drop zone" on the way
home to see some skydiving buddies, and did I mention the tailwind
on the return flight. Well over 1000 miles with 8.1 on the hour meter
with all the messing around. All in all a Y H
weekend.

Thanks again, chapter 82 See you guys at the Gathering.

KR> Engine Wanted for Potential KR2 Project

2008-10-12 Thread Benjamin Copeland
I'm considering a KR2 project and want to know if there are any complete 2180s
or close size engine for sale. If I can get a used, good engine, then I might
be able to work out (i.e., afford) a deal on the airframe.

I want a ready to run and mountable engine. Prefer dual ignition but not
required. I do want full accessories including, oil cooler, alternator,
starter, exhaust, and carb. It would be even better if it had a prop and
spinner too. The plane previously had an 1835 VW.

Because of low opportunity to travel, I need one close to Charlotte, NC or one
that can be shipped. Please email me off-line if you can provide a lead or info.
Thanks!

I second that motion. That sixteenth could turn into an eighth, or even
"perfect" next week due to humidity in the wood, but if mine had been with
only a 1/16" error, I'd have had to open a bottle of champagne!

KR> acceptable Tolerances for building

2008-10-12 Thread Richard Hasbrook
Hi all, I was going to be smart, and find the standard tolerance that they
used for the drawings, however in looking at the plans, they do not give a
+/- tolerance to go with. I have been a Mechanical Drafter for 17 years, and
have never seen a drawing without a standard tolerance block on it. My
standard tolerances for 2 place or fractional at work is .0625 or 1/16th,
however that is on a door. Fractional tolerances I have seen up as high as
1/8th inch, depending on the equipment it is being used on. The thing you
want remember is to get it as close as you can to what they list on the
drawings. There is no such thing as a perfect assembly. There will always be
some variance. However, you have to ask yourself, what is this part going to
do, is it moving or mating? If not, then you can probably get by w/ 1/8th
inch tolerance, +/-. On the fuselage, I would get it as close to the listed
# as possible, and glue it up and move on. Have a good one.

Must be a major block in that R carb, but the main

Phil, use carb spray while running and fog over the inlet and make the right
side hit. If the rpms go up and that side runs, then the carb is bad, maybe
a jet plugged or not drilled out correctly. Exchange the carb for a good
one. Also, check that the signal vacuum port underneath is not plugged up,
or blocked. If no vacuum signal, no fuel flow; same with my Mikuni carbs on
the Yamaha V-Star.

KR> Turbo to maintain Sealevel intake manifold pressure

2008-10-12 Thread John

I just made a deposit on a new long block 2180 for
my KR2.

I am in the Seattle area and virtualy surrounded by mountains.

I have only 150 hours PIC, but in a pretty wide variety of
craft (C-150, Musketeer, C-172, Champ, C-120,
C-150 Long range, beech 1900 etc... All of them seem (except the 1900)
to run out of "guts" at about 9K feet. I can't remember ever making 10k
feet, they all were naturally aspirated. Going over a 4k to 6k mountain
range just to leave town leaves me wanting to clear those "Don't land
here" speed bumps by oh, say, 5k or 6k ft. Can't get there from
"naturally aspirated" here.

I am not a speed or performance demon. I fly like I drive:
sort of slow and methodical. But I want to clear those rocks
(and the bigger ones east of there) by a wider margin.

So,, I want a turbo charger. I can find one, but I have not been able
to find a controller for the waste gate that will limit the intake
manifold pressure to 29.92 inches of mercury. Or I suppose
open the waste gate at 3700 rpm.

Any ideas?

Thanks

KR> flight planning your life

2008-10-12 Thread Larry&Sallie Flesner

For the last nine days I've had my oldest daughter and our two eight week old
twin grand babies staying with us. This weekend my youngest daughter and
friend were home to attend a wedding where they provided the guitar music and
vocals. All in all a week to remember. Life is good !!

With all that was going on I hadn't had my KR "fix" for the
week. After everyone left
for home today I headed to the airport to get in 1.5 hours in the KR,
soaring about
at 8,500 feet amongst the towering Columbus and having a good time.

On my way to the airport I was passed by a sheriff's car hauling
someone off to jail.
I couldn't help thinking of the contrast. Here I was, off to soar
with the eagles and he
had just had his wings clipped. When it comes to life, good flight planning
is essential.

Have a good week...

KR> Turbo to maintain Sealevel intake manifold pressure

2008-10-12 Thread D Lively
John:

I would say that your proposed use of a turbo charger is its best use but
personally have flown C-172s to 13,000 & C-182s to over 15000' for short
periods but view 12,500 ft about the limit for sustained operation by a
non-smoking pilot or passenger without Oxygen. I believe the craft you site
all have service cielings in the 14000 area anyway. Beware of over-boosting as
it can be hard on engines and shorten their life.

Having been in and out of Prescott AZ several times as well as high density
altitude conditions in the Calif. Central Valley and those of the CA deserts I
can understand your position very well.

Somebody asked me a question this morning, and the following is my reply. I
think it falls under the heading of things that I'd do differently given
another chance. I need to update my fuel tank page with it.

There are some other details on making my fuel tanks at

comments to one of them.

KR> RE: Turbo-Normalizing a KR

2008-10-12 Thread Robin Wills
G'day John.

There's been quite a few things written on Turbo-ing a KR over the
years, so the Archives could yield a good wastegate.

Something I have briefly thought about, but not researched much, is
using a blow-off valve from some Doof-Doof Boy-Racer's Japanese Import.
You know the ones where they go tearing off the line and there is that
loud "Psst". After asking around and a brief google search, they
come in different sizes and pressure's, although I am not sure how
reliable they would be in an aviation environment.

As I see it, you would only be using it to reduce manifold pressure if
you INadvertently over-boost your engine and it would be used much like
a warning light, dumping excessive pressure and giving you time to
reduce your throttle position. So it isn't used.

Another option is to use a small turbocharger that doesn't give you the
performance to overboost your engine. Afterall, unless you run a CSU,
your RPM will increase for a fixed MP as you climb due to the lower air
density. IIRC my theory component...

Just a thought.

Cheers,
Rob.

Hi,

I forgot the piper 180 that took 2 hours to climb to 8k feet in the
downhill (read downwind) side of a mountain range.

I have never gotten anything naturally aspirated to 10k. Perhaps
I did not have the time to wait (or the distance)..

Gotta get high fast..

Does the facet fuel pump stop making a noise when the carbie bowls are full?

I thought most Elect pumps stop pumping when fuel is not required?

KR> Turbo to maintain Sealevel intake manifold pressure

2008-10-12 Thread D Lively
John:

On the down wind side of the mountain you will have very strong headwinds
because the air is accelerated to very much higher as it rises(Bernoulli
Effect) and then will take a while to slow down as the ground falls away all
the while giving you a major down draft to fight as well. When ever I flew
from So. CA to IL I would cross the ridge between Las Vegas & Santa Fe NM at
either 11,500 ft or 12,500 ft but if I had to stop in either place I would stop
after crossing the ridge in my direction of travel because both were tucked in
so close to the ridge. Mountain flying techniques are quite strongly stressed
when you lear tto fly out west for the very reasons you have mentioned. It is
easy to get into situations with small craft that are difficult to get out of.
