KR> Careful what you carry with you

2009-10-30 Thread Benjamin Copeland
Dan,
Call the Emergency Medical Services office and ask for the Director. You
haven't heard from the police because you didn't break a law. An EMT has
absolutely no authority to confiscate anything - they can remove stuff if it
hampers their job of providing medical services - they cannot take
anything - period. I was an EMT for four years from NC to Hawaii. He
probably didn't steal your knife (but maybe) - for sure he was an idiot with
an ego over stepping his authority. Reminds me of small-time security
officers who think their paramilitary police. Yea, I was in security for a
SHORT time too.

KR> Nice KR2 4 Sale

2009-05-09 Thread Benjamin Copeland
I would recommend some serious research before purchasing this aircraft.
This plane has been for sale for about three years. I know because I checked
into it in November 2006. I have been told it has more recent "experiences"
too.

KR> KR2 w/ Continental 65 and Lycoming starter gear

2008-12-23 Thread Benjamin Copeland
Hi Guys,

I was checking out the list of builders and if you have not seen Dennis
Dyer's site, check it out.

Dennis has done the greatest thing on adding a starter and alternator to the
C-65 engine in his KR2. I did a lot of checking once (especially with Harry
Fenton - the Continental guy), and no one seems to have done what Dennis
did. I always figured there had to be a "fairly" simple way to add the
starter and he did the alternator too! I once thought using the GP vacuum
pump bracket was a viable option for an alternator if it fit the C-65, but
that didn't take care of the starter absence. Dennis is the man!

It would be great to have templates for the brackets and details on matching
the Lycoming gear to the Continental. Dennis has my admiration for a great
creative solution to using the C-65 in a KR2.

KR> N5424N

2008-11-20 Thread Benjamin Copeland
Guys,

Something is not right with N5424N. I corresponded with the builder and the
N number was cancelled - I verified it on the FAA website. It is now in a
Hold-reserve state with Cancelled/Not Assigned. I get nervous myself with
questionable paperwork and it sounds like this nice little bird (if still
that way) is not ready to take to the air as implied.

KR> N5424N

2008-11-17 Thread Benjamin Copeland
I'm pretty familiar with N5424N and the builder in Asheville NC - I went to
purchase it in 2006 and the owner decided not to sell while filling out the
papers. It was a sad day for me - the closest I've gotten to getting a KR2.
My wife and I fit inside nicely too. :(

The airframe was donated to a non-profit last year without engine (FW
forward) or instruments. The non-profit re-sold the airframe. Email me
offline if you want to know more. I'd love to see pictures of the
rejuvenated 5424N.

KR> Engine Wanted for Potential KR2 Project

2008-10-12 Thread Benjamin Copeland
I'm considering a KR2 project and want to know if there are any complete 2180s
or close size engine for sale. If I can get a used, good engine, then I might
be able to work out (i.e., afford) a deal on the airframe.

I want a ready to run and mountable engine. Prefer dual ignition but not
required. I do want full accessories including, oil cooler, alternator,
starter, exhaust, and carb. It would be even better if it had a prop and
spinner too. The plane previously had an 1835 VW.

Because of low opportunity to travel, I need one close to Charlotte, NC or one
that can be shipped. Please email me off-line if you can provide a lead or info.
Thanks!

KR> Financing a KR2

2008-10-12 Thread Benjamin Copeland
Does anyone know a lender who would finance a KR2? I tried with AOPA and they
don't do experimental unless (quote: "there are hundreds around to establish
comps").
What was worse, the loan underwriter didn't know what a KR2 was, but then he
also said he
didn't fly and had never been in a GA aircraft... hard to imagine from an AOPA
sponsored service.

Since this topic may be more of a Friday subject, please email me off-line if
you have any
information. I didn't want to wait until Friday since I have an option on a
nice, flying KR2 but
don't have the full cash.

KR> Older Flying KR2 Purchase

2008-10-12 Thread Benjamin Copeland
I'm still wondering if there are any older, flying A/W KR2s for sale within
flying distance of NC.
I got a response for a neat sounding project that could be my best option, but
would still like to see if there
is an older, currently flying plane for sale. Functionality is more important
that appearances too.

Questions:
What type of saw is used to cut the canopy? Is it the same for Plexiglas and
lexan?

Is anyone currently running SCAT dual plug heads on a flying bird? For an 1835,
does it increase
the HP as significant as the ads imply?

Thanks and Happy Mother's to ya,

KR> really bad morning

2008-10-12 Thread Benjamin Copeland
Joe,
So sorry to hear about your bad morning. At least you were not airborne - I
once found my canopy
(in a previous Dragonfly) undone on downwind during a test flight after
getting a "little bit of air" too.
Fortunately, it had a safety catch; however, I had to hold it secure with
one hand while landing
with the other, juggling throttle and stick. It was a side opening canopy.
Scared the bee-gibes
out of me!

Of course, while the budget (and mental) impact is definitely a drag, it is
SO GOOD that you
didn't flip and get hurt! I'll light a candle for you.

KR> HAPI Mosler 2180 Oil Seepage

2008-10-12 Thread Benjamin Copeland
Is anyone familiar with the HAPI Mosler 2180 w/an Ellison EFS-2 carb? The owner
reports minor seepage from
around the hub after flying for "a while". The engine has 70hrs after a rebuild
following an off-field landing.
Could this indicate a possible prop strike occurred or the rebuild was not that
good or just some early wear signs?
Also, is this engine really 82hp? That sounds a little high.

I'm looking at two planes one has the HAPI and the other has a 2100 Revmaster
with possibly a POSA or
Revflow carburator. I'd like to get some opinions since there is a lot of
knowledge and experience here.

After all these years it looks like I might actually be (finally) getting a
nice one that
is flying that I can do some minor upgrades and fly at the same time.

I love KRnet and look forward to checking it all the time - several times a
day.
I have learned so much from so many people... most importantly I've learned to
ask
intelligent questions and file notes for future questions. I've developed some
camaraderie
with a few. My thanks to great people like Mark Langford, Mark Jones, Dan
Heath, Steve Glover,
Larry Flesner, Al Hawkins, Serge Vidal, D F Lively, Bob Glidden, Colin Rainey,
Phil Brookman, Oscar Zuniga, Bill (N41768), Eric Pitts, James Ferris, and more
for making
my arm-chair flying/building an intellectual dream come true. Additionally,
through KR research
and/or seeking to purchase I've emailed some cool KR people like Rick Lanning,
Jim Vance,
Al Todd, and Monte McLean who have taught me even more.

I understand the issues that have been bantered around lately about how to use
the net -
and even debated sending this note because it's not really related - but I just
have to say
thanks to everyone and please continue my education, joy of hearing about
successes,
ways to deal with fears of flying KRs, and the promise of going to someplace
like Mount Vernon, IL
in my own KR2.

Thanks to the people who know and love the KR airplane, I'm looking forward to
being an
owner myself. Please don't respond - unless offline - it's just been great and
I want more.
You guys are great - God willing, I'll get mine soon!
Finally, I apologize if this note is offensive and out-of-line - it will not
happen again.

KR> KR2 Purchase in Progress

2008-10-12 Thread Benjamin Copeland
Offer made... offer accepted !! Looks like I may finally move from the wannabe
to becoming a KR2 owner.
More on that after the deals done - the paperwork - like next week.

Anyway, can some one email me off-line a sample liability waiver used. I want
the builder/seller
to feel comfortable selling his KR2. We are both searching for a good document
that will satisfy this
issue transferring ownership to me.

We already have the agreement that I have to fly to his place regularly so he
can "talk to his bird".
Its a great little trip from my home port too, so that will be neat.

Please let me know what you may have. Thanks. Ben just2...@together.net

KR> Gathering

2008-10-12 Thread Benjamin Copeland
Are owner/pilots who didn't build welcome to a gathering of builders?
I hoping to have a KR2 within two weeks but don't know if I'll be ready to
take on the trip, but want to inquire.
Thanks,

KR> Any creative NAV Lights

2008-10-12 Thread Benjamin Copeland
Hi, I'm looking for a very low amp nav light idea and/or positioning lights.
Most of my flying will be after work, and while not really planning night
flights, I'd prefer to have lights running at dusk. Are there strobes for
the budget?

Has anyone developed a cost effective nav and/or positioning lighting
system? The standard aircraft stuff is pretty expensive and has more
amps and weight than I really want.

Thanks,

Does anyone have a KR2 with an 1835 engine (52x42 prop) and can tell me any

The 1835 seems to be a very dependable engine but I'm wondering if it can take

I'm still looking for a KR2 to buy on the eastern side of the country.
I'm hoping to catch up with Dan Heath in the near future; he's offered

of a KR2 or KR2S for sale let me know. I'd prefer a TD with fixed gear but
will consider retracts too. I love the conventional gear; I had a Dragonfly

I can even get the seller recognition of public access TV in Charlotte
