KR> KR2S project for sale

2015-11-12 Thread Evans Powell
Have a KR2S kit I won't be able to finish for a long time; too long.
Signed a mobility agreement and will now be going overseas.

I bought this kit near day VFR completion. I am TAKING OFFERS from those
who are serious. If you want a KR2S that is pristine and doesn't need work
then please don't waste your time; or mine.

Here are some details.

Have original plan book
Kit is on its wheels (tail dragger)
Needs canopy attached (tinted dragon fly) Parts are there for Mark Langford
style mounting.
No interior made
Current panel has Grand Rapids EFIS, ignition, Alt, Airspeed, (day VFR)
Have most of the original paperwork and kit number docs
Running HAPI 1835 (mounted but no longer hooked up; preparing to remove and
replace with stronger 2100 or Corvair)
Great Plains VW manual
two appropriate Corvair cores for WW conversion (WW conversion
manual included)
No cowling or spinner
Has Sterba prop
Previous workmanship is structurally sounds but not the prettiest I've seen.
Exterior has been primed and partly sanded; needs more cosmetic work prior
to paint.

I am not interested in haggling with anyone. If you are interested we can
talk offline and then you can make an offer. I need to sell this by the
end of the year; late January by the absolute latest.

Please contact me offline if interested.

Cheers,

Evans.

KR> Rudder hinge play

2015-08-28 Thread Evans Powell
Best to follow Chris Kinnaman's advice.

Lets us not forget that 'any' amount of 'play' or 'slop' takes a toll on
contacted parts over time through the effects of high impact stress and
friction; no matter how small. This can lead to damaged and/or failing
parts that seem to happen out of nowhere. Moreover, loosing a tail fin or
even something as small as a trim tab, in flight, can be fatal (Jimmy
Leeward, 2011 P51 Crash).

Your success up there is function of your quality of work down here.

KR> Tri gear assembly up for grabs

2015-07-22 Thread Evans Powell
Tri gear converters,

I was on the fence about converting to my conventional KR2S over to a
tri-gear. I got a great deal of feed back from KR netters who have walked
this path before. It took some time to process all of the advice,
guidance, and opinions from everyone and I finally decided to stay with
what I have. Thanks to everyone who shared their knowledge and
experience. It helped me immensely in coming to a final decision that I am
very happy with. I am going to stay with the conventional TG.

That being the case, I would like to put a plug in for Brad Ankerstar;
Thanks for your insight and collaboration Brad. Brad has the entire
tri-gear assembly (less the front strut up for grabs) for anyone looking to
do this for less than new gear prices; please see pic below. You can work
out the price details with him.

Thanks again for all the input. See you at the gathering.

Best,

KR> KRnet Digest, Vol 3, Issue 188

2015-07-21 Thread Evans Powell
You got that right!

Unfortunately for my flight times, the shuttle times won't work. Although I
would arrive in Portland on the 3RD, the next shuttle wouldn't leave for
MMV until 2:00 Friday arriving there at 3:20. My flight Sunday departs at
10:20 and the shuttle doesn't leave MMV until 10:05. This simply won't
work for me. Rental or some other way will have to be my method.
NOTE to self; next time check trans opps before buying airfare.

I agree, ride share would be best. In addition, we would have trans during
our time there. That wouldn't be the case with using the shuttle. If
there is no other means, the rental car is my only option. That being my
situation I am still up for sharing the cost with anyone. We could simply
split the cost however many ways as those who want in. With two persons,
for example the cost would be $75 plus 1/2 the gas. That would be about
the cost of the shuttle and we would have trans at the ready for the whole
weekend. Just let me know who interested and I will make sure to be there
for you when you arrive to pick you up. Below is a copy and paste from the
sight. I have not made the online res yet so let me know and I will put
the money up and lock it in at the lower rate.

If I pay now (online discount) this would be the break down; add $14 more
if we wait and pay at the counter.

Would that be 0630 or 1830 hrs arrival Friday and 1900 departure on
Sunday? I arrive 9/3 at 2325 hrs and depart Sunday at 1020 hrs. I can get
a compact through USAA for approx. $150 ($94 plus fees, YIKES!) not
including fuel expenses. I could pick you up at PDX when you arrive
however I leave Sunday at 1025 hrs and would need to be at the airport

I have a running VW 1835 on my kit right now. I am in the process of
manufacturing my cowling. Is there anyone out there with the same
engine sporting a completed cowling? I would like to hear about what shape
worked best for you. More specifically, I am concerned with clearance
measurements, appropriate air intake sizes, and overall successful full
cowling shapes for this particular power plant.

KR> Tail dragger to tri gear conversion

2015-07-15 Thread Evans Powell
Hello all,

Before presenting my topic and questions, I will let you know I have
searched the KR forum history regarding this subject and have found some
relatable discussions however I am still left with a few looming
questions.

1. Can this be done if I have a kit that is nearly complete and has TG
mains already installed? If so, how?

I believe the short answer is yes however I don't really know how or
what to pay particular attention to.

2. How do I find/build the nose gear? I have seen other chatting about a
Diehl front nose gear but haven't been able to find anything online for
purchase. Diehl site 'under construction."

The reasons I would like to make the gear change are:

I don't have a tail dragger endorsement and the ability and prices to get
one here in COS are limited and out of my price range (starting at $1500
and just keep going from there on how long).

I am hoping a conversion to tri-gear would be comparable in cost or
maybe even less than getting the TG endorsement. Please don't take this as
me not wanting a TG endorsement. I do. I just can't justify the cost at
this point and it is holding me back.

I would love to hear from any of you on the pros and cons on making such a
conversion. More importantly, if this is doable I would love hear from
those who have done or simply know how to do this as well as where I can
find the parts to do so.

Thank you in advance for any knowledge you are willing to share.

Respectfully,

E.

KR> Large valves on 2180 VW

Dan,

Thanks. I also bought WW's Corvair manual and have been looking around the
Colorado Springs area to acquire the right block. So far no luck for the
right price; at least. In the meantime, I have been studying this VW. If
I didn't have this engine already I might be looking harder for a Corvair
core. Starting to think I might be better off with a corvair; in the end.

KR> Large valves on 2180 VW

2015-07-06 Thread Evans Powell
Hello all,

I was convinced there was a running Revmaster 2300 mounted on the KR2S
unfinished kit and later determined the engine is actually a VW 1835
HAPI. None the less I have ordered the overhaul manual and will be taking
this thing apart to make sure all is well. It runs nice now but it doesn't
have any books and that's not good enough for me at anything
AGL. Fortunately I know an A that will supervise and sign of on the
rebuild but he is not familiar with the characteristics and
performance. That being the case, I thought this thread might be read by
someone with an 1835 pulling them through the skies. That made me
think, maybe, some of those same readers, or others will first hand
knowledge of this version of VW could share their knowledge of issues
and/or performance expectations they get from theirs. My research up to
this point had been regarding the 2300. I do know HAPI is no longer in
business however parts are available. That being the case I can find very
little information on what these 1835 bugs can do when attached to a KR2S.

Love to hear from those willing to share knowledge and experience.

Best,

E.

2015-07-01 Thread Evans Powell
Oscar,

I am seriously considering driving. I live in COS. That's about an hour +
from Boulder.

KR> aircraft radio/ gps recommendation

2015-06-24 Thread Evans Powell
Stan

Comms; I am going with a hand-held.

As for GPS; The IFLY's are very nice. I have a friend who loves flying his
RV4. For him, the ForeFlight app is the way to go. I agree with him if
you aren't' apposed to using your iPhone as your display however this app
can be uploaded onto iPads as well. iPad would be my choice. There are
iPad mounts for this if you want a place to doc in on your panel. It even
has weather. Continued use of the GPS can run the battery down fast so I
would recommend a onboard power source.

Just my $0.02.

Best of luck.
