KR> Turbo
I am running a VW 2.4 Liter Turbo and I am extremely happy with the performance. I use a Garret T2.5 turbo with an internal waste gate. I had to do a carbon seal conversion because of the suck through setup I have with the carb. I had to fit a 300mm x 200mm x 50mm Intercooler in order to effectively use the turbo. At 1350lbs taking off from FAWB at 4100ft ASL I have a average climb rate of 480 fpm. Jaco Swanepoel KR2S, ZU-DVP Pretoria South Africa
KR> Intercooler
Hi Guys, Glad to say that apart from doing some facelift work on my baby, that she is all finished. I fitted an 300mm x 200mm x 50mm intercooler between the turbo and the inlet manifold. WOW, what a difference! The 2.4 VW now has allot more torque. Since fitting it, I was able to fly continuously at 38in boost with the oil temp at 89 deg C. I also fitted a new Icom A200 after 3 radio failures in the circuit. I have 34 hours on her now and will take her to the GF for the last 6 hours of testing. Up till now she managed 138mph (in the circuit) before I had to throttle back to turn baseleg. I replaced the cables to the elevator with an aluminium pushrod. Extreme difference in the handling. I can not wait for the next flight. THIS IS FUN Regards Jaco Swanepoel KR2S, ZU-DVP Pretoria South Africa
KR> Firewall
Hi Guys, I have a friend with a KR2 that wants to know how much he can hang on the firewall without doing any mods. The KR2 was designed for a 1600 VW and as we all know, those years have come and gone. You guys with the bigger and heavier engines on the stock KR2, have you made any mods to the firewall? KR> YEEEEEEHAAAAAAA, Unbelievable!!!!!
Hi Guys, I became a KR pilot today. Piet and I took off on runway 11, left out, reached circuit altitude on late crosswind and all of this at a gross of 1350lbs. We flew overhead the field for 43 minutes. I made some steep turns, dive and pitch recovery and Piet threw some yaws my way by playing with the rudder. I managed to control everything he threw my way. To end the exercise, I had 10 minutes of fun flying. Our next flight is on Tuesday morning. I can't wait. YEEHA! KR> 2nd Flight, ZU-DVP
HI Guys, Piet flew my baby for the second time today. BTW, Piet owns a KR2 and has over 300 hrs on it. He was totally amazed at how well my KR2S flies. He took off on 29, maintained a 400 fpm climb , and reached circuit altitude before turning crosswind. Turning downwind, he throttled back, maintained 100 mph, trimmed it out and flew hands off on downwind. He only adjusted the trim every now and then. He says she is unbelievably stable. No wing drops or yaws. He mentioned that although the pitch sensitivity is far better than his KR2, it is still quite sensitive and would take some getting used too. He once again did a perfect landing, making it look so easy. If the weather permits, we will be doing further tests, incl loading, on Saturday. Will keep you informed. Best Regards, Jaco Swanepoel KR2S, ZU-DVP Pretoria South Africa

I made some modifications to the cowling. The max oil temp was 97 deg C. I decided to replace the oil cooler with a bigger one. I am just about finished with the fitment and plumbing. Today I will fibreglass a duct inside the cowling that will force the air directly over the oil cooler. KR> My Baby Can Fly
Hi Guys, This morning at 06h20 my baby got her wings. My test pilot, Piet Smit, took off on Runway 29 at Wonderboom. He rotated at 70 mph, kept her low over the length of the runway and accelerated to 110 mph at which speed he pulled her up and flew overhead the airfield for approx 15 minutes. WHAT AN AMAZING FEELING! Thanx to everyone in the kr family for all the support and advise over the last two and a half years that made it possible to realize my dream. KR> The time is near
Hi Guys, I received the glass cockpit today. I started with the installation and hope to have it done on Saturday. If all goes well, she will be going to the Wonderboom Airport on Monday. I am going to glass the wings to the stubs and do some touch-up paint work, do the required connections, weight and balance and then the final inspection. Hopefully the testing can commence somewhere to the end of next week. THE EXCITEMENT IS EXTREME!!! Regards, Jaco Swanepoel Pretoria South Africa KR2S, ZU-DVP
KR> The time is near!
I ordered my glass cockpit today. I hope to have it fitted and working within 4-5 weeks and then the fun begins. The inspector had 6 minor issues that I have already corrected. He said we will do the final inspection at the airport. By the way, it has been 10 weeks since I started my diet and guess what, I managed to lose 46lbs with another 2 weeks to go! I feel great!! KR> Paint Design
Hi Guys, I did my paint design on Coral Draw. It works very well. I took a photo with my digital camera and imported it into Coral Draw. I then did 50 designs and let my wife and children pick the nicest one. I saved the file to cd and took it to a local company that does all my digital printing. They used the file as is and printed it on a vinyl sticker which they then treated with a UV block as to not fade in time. Your imagination is the limit. KR> vw performance
Hi Hennie, I am running a VW, type 4, 2L, Turbo with a Mr Turbo EFI. Compression Ratio = 6.8. EFI fitted with the following sensors: air temp ( inlet manifold), Oil Temp, Lambda and a connecting tube to the inlet manifold (manifold pressure). Also running dual distributors with optical pickups connected to the EFI. The whole engine is tuned and managed with my HP notebook connected to a serial port. (Obviously removed after tuning) I have no idea what the horsepower is, but I will tell you this: Tied down and turning a De Necker 52 x 49 prop, I am getting 3200 rpm with 46" boost whilst still having 10mm on the throttle. I am Installing a warning light to not exceed 40" boost. I am sure I need a bigger prop. There is no lagging on the engine. It is very responsive. I am buying 103mm barrels & pistons on Thursday, and I am going to convert it to a 2.4L turbo. One of these days I will be having just as much fun (horsepower) as the Corvair guys. KR> New KR's
Hi Guys, I started my project with a partially built boat. I only logged the hours that I physically spent working on the plane. I did not log the hours spent re-doing things, designs, development, cad drawings, searching the archives and other sources for info, time on the phone, driving around for material and parts and testing and tuning the engine. I have physically spent 998 hours building during the last 2 years and 2 months. Double that for the time spent on the things not logged. I am saving up for the glass cockpit. KR> Expanded foam
Hi Guys, When I started building the wings, The EAA inspector on the project preffered that I use 32DB Polystyrene. It is extremely hard. I had it pre-cut by the supplier and glued into place. I used a belt sander with 100grid paper to profile it. That was a huge job. The 32DB does not make those little balls like normal Polystyrene. It makes dust when sanded. I could not press a hole in it with my finger. KR> Weight loss
Hi Guys, The program name is Slender Wonder. The diet is managed and controlled by Dr Jan Botha( 32 years of weight loss research). The aim of the diet is to cure the cause and not the symptom. There is NO calorie counting. The cause of picking up weight is a reduction of a hormone called "Liptine", that should be present in the fat cells. This diet kick starts your metabilism and helps your body to correct it self. Not once in the last 4 week did I feel hungry. In fact, I could not eat all the food. I had to cut out certain foods and I am not allowed to mix any proteins and NO starch for 4 weeks. If anybody is interested, I will try to scan some of the important pages in my book (including the diet) and email it to you. KR> VW Engine update
Hi Guys, As I am sure you know, I have been battling to get more that 2600 rpm and 28 in. boost on the VW, 2L, type 4, turbo, Fuel injection engine. After rebuilding the exhaust manifold, altering the inlet manifold and rebuilding the turbo, I only managed to get 2800 rpm and 28 in. boost. My friend at Stallions turbo finally replaced the 0.25 ratio exhaust casing on the rayjay with a 0.22 ratio casing. I also replaced the hydraulic lifters with solid lifters and longer pushrods. WOW! What a difference. I am now getting 3200 rpm static (plane tied down) and 38 in. boost on a 52 x 49 prop. This sounds much better. KR> rpm and boost pressure- sorry it is so long
Hi Guys, I need some info please. I was getting 1900 rpm max on my 2L,VW, Type 4, Turbo, Fuel Injection. After consulting various people, I rebuilt the exhaust manifold and re-set the hydraulic lifters. Now I manage to get 2800 rpm but still no boost from the turbo. I stripped out the turbo and took it to a local turbo repair shop. They say that the gap between the disc and the casing is 2mm and it should only be 3/10 of 1mm. I gave them the go ahead to rebuild it, but could this really be the problem. What rpm and boost should I be getting?? Apparently it should be 3400-3600 rpm and 40 in boost. Does this sound right? I am turning a 52 x 49 wooden prop. One guy also suggested that I replace the hydraulic lifters with solid lifters, any thoughts? KR> Nose Gear
Hi Guys, Do any of you have a good idea on making the nose gear stearable. The nose gear is completed and fitted. I have an idea of what I want to do, but I am not convinced. The nose gear is made from a motorbike strut with a remanufactured 5mm wire thickness coil spring replacing the stock coil spring. I have a bracket fitted to the top outer sleeve of the strut, entering the cowling. I can easily fit pushrods between the rudder pedals and the bracket, but what should I do to absorb any shudder on the nose wheel. I thought of fitting coil springs over the pushrods, between the firewall and bracket, and then leaving some play on the pushrod at the bracket. This should ensure that a shudder does not have any reaction on the rudder via the pedals. The coil springs should also keep the nose wheel and rudder center with no input from the cockpit. Any thoughts please. Thanks, Jaco Swanepoel South Africa KR2S _ ZU-DVP - Yahoo! FareChase - Search multiple travel sites in one click.
KR> BRS
Mark, I truly respect everyone's right to make their own choices. I am glad you managed to avoid serious injury on that bike of yours. I would just like to shortly tell you were I am coming from. On 18 October 1999, whilst living on a farm near Marloth Park on the eastern side of South Africa, I was attacked by a Cape Buffalo whilst in the bush. I used to be a professional hunter and have 22 years experience without incident. On this day I was not even hunting. I sustained severe injuries which had a severe reaction on myself and my family. I had 12 operations in 5 years and died twice on the table. I was grounded for by caa for 5 years. After going through all of this, I will do ANYTHING at ANY COST to turn the odds in my favour. I do not expect you to understand, but living on the edge is one thing if you only need to worry about yourself. It is totally another when you laying in bed for 9 months, not being able to support your family and going without meals for 2 to 3 day so that your children can eat. Very sad to here about Steve. I guess it is true, the KR guys are like family. Ron, I think a BRS is not an option, it must be a requirement. We all build and modify our birds to suit us, why not allow for something that can save your life. Yes, it does add 20lbs but the difference in weight between the lightest and the heaviest KR far exceeds 20lbs with vertually the same power plants. Hallo Guys, I have increased the dimensions on my wing spars with approx 15% and also fitted 6 ply mahogany plywood to each side instead of 3 ply. The wings are fitted with wing tanks and came out beautifully, but the thing is this, The WAF are still the same. I am sure that the 32 liter tanks on each side should help with unloading the WAF. KR> ram air filter
Sorry Guys, I know this has been discussed over and over. I have searched the archives and could not really find the answer. I have a 2L VW type 4 turbo motor which was running with a Stromberg 175 carburator. I have now modified the complete system and will be running two Mr Turbo fuel injection and electronic ignition systems. The 2 inlet manifolds have been modified to take 4 injectors each. Thus having system 1 and 2. Both systems can run together (via toggle switches), producing spark to all 8 plugs, but there will be a toggle switch feeding the common points on injectors 1 or injectors 2, thus sellecting either injectors 1 or injectors 2. A throttle body will be placed in the possition of my existing carburator. QUESTION: Is it acceptable to mount a K filter inside the cowling next to the engine mount or is it prefreble to mount a cone filter inside a tube which is then ducted to a mesh covered intake on the front of the cowling?
