just says switching from a Cessna 172 over to a piper warrior each plane flies
are all different I flown mine back to Oshkosh twice Mount Vernon once have
over 400 hours on it. Like I said after the first 30 seconds after take off

deal with social distancing at convenient stores or restaurants or take out

the virus. I know it’s different in other parts of the country but here in
Arizona has been more of an inconvenience. We have had no lock downs or travel
restrictions except the fact that they have closed the Mexican boarder. So no
trips to the beach for some natural vitamin D. Hopefully this will all be over

With all that being said, Dan Diehl once told me that he would build another

airspeed by the loss of drag.

KR> Alright it’s time to change the thread....

2019-10-15 Thread Lee Van Dyke via KRnet
I fly a standard KR2, built in 84. (1984). Retracts and everything. I can have
flown it to the Gathering in Mt. Vernon once and Oshkosh twice. I have over
400 hours on it, and it is great to fly. I followed the net for a year while I
was updating the plane from lack of use and it had not flown in the several
years. In that time people told me I should get rid if the retractable gear
and go with fixed, I even bought a fixed gear set up. I decided that since the
plane had the update on the retractable gear, that I should try to fly it as
is. I love the set up and yes it took about ten minutes to get use to the
plane, cuz I was flying a super cub at the time. That being said, I did
fix/repair the plane that landed on an island in Washington and flipped upside
down.
The gentleman that owned the plane and paid me to fix it sold it to a guy in
NM. It took me a week or two to get use to the steering of a nose dragger.
Once I was good on the ground I flew it to NM. It was like night and day to
mine. It flew like a champ. Straight and level, and really smooth. With all
of that being said, and after talking to several people at the last gathering,
it pains me to see so many people who like the KR2 and want to re-invent the
wheel. ie. Bigger engine, longer plane, fixed gear, yada yada yada. The
retractable gear is cool, but I can see the benefits of a fixed gear if
building a new plane. With all of that being said, let’s go back to why the KR
is desirable, Cheap and easy to build. My plane has a VW engine on it I don’t
know if I would go with a Corvair but if I were to rebuild I might consider an
O-200. I think all you would need is a 100hp plane. Keep it simple and light,
like Ken designed. My plane was just shy of 600 lbs at last check. I fly
about 150 mph on a VW engine. Back to the original topic, yes longer is most
likely better, but do you need it NO, NO,NO. Build one and fly it, you will
not be sad.. thank you for reading my rant.

KR> Icing. Glazing

2015-12-06 Thread Lee Van Dyke

> the best bang for the buck is to use a micro and resin.

I agree with the previous statement. Although I would consider the best process
a two-step process. Start with the resin and micro to take care of any big
dips and pinholes. Then finish topcoat with the icing it's much easier to see
any other bad spots and gives you a nice smooth finish that you can apply
primer over. We have built and finished four Lancair Evolutions, they come in
raw carbon. Orr first step is to slather the entire wing empanage and fuselage
with micro and resin. Then with any other small areas we will skim with icing.
This process is followed by the first layer of primer. The first layer of
primer will show you any pinholes or missed areas. Most of that first layer of
primer is sanded off to get rid of all your pinholes. Then we do another coat
of primer over the entire airplane and it's flown it's first 40 hours in that
primer.

recall. We will put 1673 lbs in the plane in the next 6 months. Way. Way.
Way fun

KR> mountain flying

2013-10-07 Thread Lee Van Dyke
As one that has made that trip from Phoenix Arizona. 95% of the people flying
to Chino would not have to fly over mountains. Therefore the mountain training
would not be necessary. Once you get past Albuquerque it's pretty flat all the
way to Chino

KR> Water Based Paint

2013-09-11 Thread Lee Van Dyke
I'm working on I lancair 360 that has water-based paint on the underside. This
is the second Lancair that decided to land with the gear up. The problem I see
with the water-based paint is the preped surface was too smooth. I would start
the first Coat with nothing more that 220 grit. With the final coat nothing
more than 400 grit. This planes prep surface was so smooth I was able to pull
off big sheets of paint.

You have a good point Mark, some improvements are good, and needed in some
things. There are people out there that will 100,000 plus for a legend Cub, but
you can find a good referb Cub or Super Cub and they could save a ton of money.
I will never discourage a person on this net for wanting the best for
themselves. I will also not discourage a person who wants to build a "stock
KR". The first big expense to build a KR is the wood. Like I said I have
projects for sale and it is not to make money. The sole purpose was to save
projects from the fire pit, and to help people. I guess my point is there are
still people that would like to build a stock KR and it would fit their needs.
I have a good example, there are no piston engine powered Lancair Evolutions
built or sold. We have a 4P customer who purchased the first one to be built.
My question is why would you need a piston powered pressurized airplane?
Answer he does not make long trips and does not need a turbine. My question
what about resale. Answer, he does not care. This guy will fly the wings off
this plane. The point I'm trying to make is there are all kinds of people out
there who want what they want. I hope they can get unbiased opinions and they
can make a choice.
On a lighter note my engine is ready to go on and I still need to fix my VE
cowl. I'm looking at making the gathering this year to take my whippings.

Dan and netters

Opinions are good, but when it come to a product, people's opinions can change
someone choice. I work for a company that started out as a builder assist
company for Glasairs. Glasairs are made of VE, our new owner has worked for
the company for 15 years, and he hates VE. I have and old KR and used VE a
little rebuilding it. I really grew up using VE, due to my dad using it for
his projects. I work mostly with Epoxy now, but if we have a project at work
that is VE I get it. My recent history with VE would freak most people on this
net out. I have layed up parts in a mold that would use 7 gallons of VE and we
would do it all in 2 hours. I disagree with the statement that VE has a film.
The reason you can't lay Polyester resin ie VE over Epoxy is the wax that comes
to the surface. Epoxy can be put over Epoxy without any prep within 24 hours.
With VE you need to scuff the surface. Peel ply is a different story. Health
wise Epoxy is worse for you. Lungs, touch etc.it all comes down to
personal preference, are Fords better than Toyota?

KR> Kudos to barnstormers

2013-05-04 Thread Lee Van Dyke
Netters, one of the projects that I have been working on was my uncles Kitfox.
He passed away a year ago February. The plane was stored for 10 years and the
A/W cert and logs were lost. Working with the FAA here in phx is now easiest.
The FAA agent I worked with was great, he has been to the business that work
for many, many times. He can out several times as I was working on the plane.
I got the condition inspection done and got the A/W cert reissued. I did have
a few people at the airport looking at the plane. I informed them that I did
not want to make a deal until I got all of the paperwork completed. Once that
was completed, I was told the plane was worth more than I was asking. I listed
it on barnstormers for a good but fair price, and it sold in 2 days. Now
N212LH will live in Las Vegas. Full asking price. So the 2 other KR projects
that I have listed on this net will be on Barnstormers soon.! I love this net
but face it, we are CHEAP. Barnstormers has a bigger audience. I would love
to see the projects that I have for sale go to the KR family. I wish we had a
support system that could buy from sellers like I bought from that could filter
these parts through the Official KR parts and kits. Just a thought. Help out
our own.

Ok I did do some damage to mine with the very hard off field landing, but, I
think less damage than if I had fixed gear. I rebuild them, and I'm adding a
nice fairing on the gear. The cool factor of the retracts is there also.
Everybody is different and like different things. Look at the cars we drive.
I have an original KR2, with retracts like Ken had. I love it and it will be
back in the air by the end of the year.

2012-11-16 Thread Lee Van Dyke
Netters I have been asking questions about the Ellison 2 carb, and getting some
good information.
First: Mark L. gave me a number for a diaphragm for the carb. I ordered it and
it was the wrong size and it was not marks fault. More on that later.
Second: the Internet is good but not great. I have tried to looked at several
sites and some have little information and some will direct you in the wrong
direction. That is the benefit of this web site.

Last: This is where the duh comes in. I have been asking for help from this
site and I had the answer at my fingertips.

The carb I'm working on is a very old carb. From HAPI, receipt signed by Rex
Taylor.
If you go to the Ellison web site and read the article "no, it's not a POSA".
As Ben was designing the Ellison he had help from the mastermind friend of mine
Tom McNeeley. Duh I knew Tom helped Ben, so I called him (fingertips). Duh.
He again told me the story of how the carb/ throttle body was developed. They
used a Tillotson diaphragm. Mark that is why it looks similar, tillotson made
it. My model was so early it was different, Tom told me to call a local lawn
mower shop, and lo and behold I have a smooth running 2180 on a Dragonfly.

Again Thank you Net and Mark

KR> gathering

2012-08-25 Thread Lee Van Dyke
Hello KR Net,

It's a sad day when you come to realize that you will not make it to the 2012
KR Gathering. I have been extremely busy since the last Gathering. Work has
been keeping me busy, we completed 2 Lancair Evolutions and they have been
delivered. I helped a elderly friend of mine make a new cowl for his plane.
(corby) Mid July we got our third Evolution and it has to be done by the end
of the year. As of right now it is on schedule.

The story of my plane (snakebite) is a little different. I had a lot of work
to do on it. I made stub wing skin molds, layed up parts, and tried to see if
anybody else wanted any. Not to bash anybody, but I can now see what Steve
Glover has to deal with, on selling KR parts. Let me just say that there are
lot of people who kick tires. Enough of that. I got my new prop the other
day, I'm fixing the lower cowl and should be done with that next week. The
wing skins will also go on this week. I pulled out the landing gear, and
pretty much started over. I have the spring bar straightened, it always had a
bend in it. I made a new handle for pulling the shear pins. I made new blocks
for the shear pins, and replaced a lot of bolts that were the wrong length. I
mean a lot. The goal was to get the plane ready for the gathering, but there
was just too much to do. I have to repair the exhaust, and repaint the plane.
The outboard wings were fixed and sanded a few months ago.

I have also been cleaning up the KitFox that my Uncle built. It has 8.5 hours
on it and has been sitting for 10 years. It is in great shape and I have it
sold. The wing need to go on and small ticky tacky stuff need to be completed.
I also have an Ultra Pup that I have been working on. A lot of fabric repairs
needed to be done, and the wings are back on. The engine is being rebuilt and
the wiring will have to be put back in the plane.

I also worked on a gyro copter, replacing all of the windows in it, but that is
another story.

So if somebody could update the registration page and remove my name and the
one Bob put on there. Larry I will still take a Hat and shirt.

I will be at copperstate with snakebite, and will plan for new year.

Have fun everybody
