KR> Micro over "Smooth Prime"?

2016-09-07 Thread danrh at windstream.net
You could use Super Fil which is another product made by PolyFiber. Using a
resin based filler, could, I emphasize, could, make it harder to sand than the
Smooth Prime, thus, making it harder to get the smoothness you are after.

I have been priming my plane with "Smooth Prime" and unfortunately I have found
a few minor areas that will require a little touch-up micro. Too big to fix
with
future priming and blocking prior to final paint. Is there a problem to apply
micro over "Smooth Prime"? Any special prep to insure bonding?

KR> iFLY hardware vs iFly Apps - Advantages and disadvantages

2016-08-01 Thread danrh at windstream.net
When iFLy came out with the 720, I jumped on it right away because they boasted
of their anti-glare screen. When I received he unit, that is the first thing
that I checked on. Much to my surprise, it was, indeed, very anti-glare.
However, I did have some problems with it and they agreed to swap it out for a
new one. When I started using the new one, and checking to see if the problems
were solved, I kept thinking that this was not so anti-glare as I thought. The
other problems were resolved, but this kept bugging me. So, I had some long
conversations with the people at iFly. I finally found out that they had
abandoned the anti-glare screen because one of the owners preferred a screen
that was brighter. I gave them a couple pieces of my mind over that and don't
think that I have ever gotten them back. Who would do such a stupid thing?

On Monday, August 1, 2016 10:56 AM, Jeff Scott via KRnet wrote:

I agree that like many other devices, the iFly 740 definitely needs an anti

The second is a number of instruments that I have collected and will not be

for the most part they do not include any sensors. Many are new in box items

I also have a XM weather box and wiring along with a Anywhere map Septa

an old Lowerence 1000 that I used for the auto pilot up to last August. It is

KR> Building sequence

2015-06-18 Thread danrh at windstream.net
Yes, fuselage first. This is because the entire KR is built upon itself. Each
step sort of forms the "JIG" for the next step.

If I were building again, what I would not do is build out the wing stubs,
until I finished the fuselage, to eliminate having to lean over the wing stub
for everything I was doing inside the fuselage.

Happy building and see you in McMinnville.

Keep it within the design gross weight and / or fiddle with the engine
placement. Hard to do the first, much easier to do the second. That is what I
did, per recommendation from Jim Faughn, when I had the VW on the Black Bird.

Ok, excellent suggestion on building the airplane to the forward end of the
cg limit. Just exactly how does one do that? And still follow the plans?

Sid Wood
Tri-gear KR-2 N6242
Mechanicsville, MD, USA
---
I put another couple of hours on N891JF (a fairly stock KR2) late this
afternoon, and I was thinking that there is nothing special about flying
this plane. Yes, it will run circles around a 172, and it takes more
runway, but it's just not difficult at all. It's justdifferent!
What gets people is when they try to fly it with a CG toward the aft end
or aft of the safe range, and then it's not just a handful, it's trying
to kill you.

The solution is pretty dang simple...build it with the CG near the FRONT
of the range, because as passengers and baggage are added, the CG is
going to move aft. Jim Faughn built N891JF to be right on the front end
of the CG range with him and full fuel, and I'm even lighter. There's
no hint of instability, obviously, and it's really not twitchy in smooth
air (which is where I climb to for any cross-country). It will gain or
lose a couple of hundred feet in a minute if you're not paying
attention, so you need to pay attention!

One common characteristic with KRs is a lack of longitudinal (roll)
stability. They will typically drift off left or right and just keep on
increasing the bank into a dive...so don't fall asleep at the stick.
Other than these details, they are very similar to "normal" airplanes,
but the V numbers are different, of course.

And has been said many times, stick movement is pretty much limited to
just "thinking" about it, while at cruise speed...slight pressure
exerted on the stick, with no discernible movement. About the only time
real stick movement happens is on takeoff or landing, unless you like to
do the occasional roll.

Stalls are very gentle, and give PLENTY of warning. N891JF rattles the
elevator hinges long before you get to the stall, and it doesn't break,
it just mushes down a little. You'd have to be oblivious for it to
sneak up on you and lose more than 20' of altitude. I did several
today, most a little less than 50 mph TAS with the belly board down.
Turns do not significantly alter the stall characteristics, just
increase the speed a bit. And it slips beautifully...just stomp the
rudder pedal and correct flight path with ailerons, and it's a real hoot
of an elevator ride.

But a KR can lull you to sleep in calm air and practically flies itself
with minimal input. But even in calm air you can't spend a lot of time
to fold a map with no hands on the stick, because moving arms and legs
changes the weight distribution, and the plane will react accordingly.
But that shouldn't be a surprise. With a dual stick setup, I fly with
my knees when doing such things as taking sunset photos. With one stick
that's a lot more difficult, bordering on yoga.

As Troy Petteway once told me, "taildragger KR's are the easiest of the
taildraggers to land", and I see no reason to argue with that. It's not
like flying an F-16, but it is a different mindset than a C-150. My EAA
flight advisor had me fly a Cub (for the first time) the morning of my
first KR flight, but my time would have been better spent flying the KR
earlier in the day in the calm air of the early morning.

I guess my best advice would be to get a little (even ten minutes would
help) stick time in a KR before flying yours for the first time, and
keep in mind to make very subtle stick movements. And go to altitude to
ascertain stall speed, then approach a long runway at maybe ten percent
higher than that and just wait for the speed to bleed off and let the
plane gently settle onto the ground.

If this plane were so difficult to fly, I wouldn't climb into it at
every opportunity and just fly around the neighborhood for two hours
like I did today. Eight takeoffs and landings, some stall and cruise
speed testing, a great sunset unfolding, and more dinosaurs liberated.

KR> KR1 LSA QUALIFICATION

2015-03-26 Thread danrh at windstream.net
Easy to meet that constraint, the stall speed is the one you need to be
concerned about. And it has to be "clean", no lift devices required. You can
have them, but they cannot be used to test the stall speed.

Gross weight will probably be the thing you most have to keep in check to be
able to meet that requirement.

Pulsar XP does meet all the LSA requirements except for the non-LSA cruise
speed of 150 Kts. He tested the cruise speed for 120 Kts operation and noted
the engine RPM. He placarded that engine RPM on the instrument panel. He
then wrote the Washington FSDO that he was converting to LSA operation. He
called the FSDO and they said his letter was on file and not to expect a
reply. He made no modification to the aircraft other than the cruise RPM
placard and a log book entry. He has been operating his Pulsar XP as an LSA
for four years now. (And pays little attention to the LSA RPM placard.)

Yes, keep the heat in the pipe. This is good for many reasons. Get your pipes

that Mark L. does his.

It appears keeping

The reservoir is very small. I installed mine on the inside of the firewall,
but then, I did not have a header tank taking up that space. The RV guys
install it on the engine side. I will be that it takes up less weight than the
reservoir on each master cylinder where they are contained on each cylinder.

Having done this brake bleeding only three times now on my KR-2, I am
definitely a believer in installing a remote and accessible reservoir for
the master cylinders. A plastic unit to visually check on preflight would
be just the thing. Where to install the reservoir may require some creative
thinking. A reservoir full of hydraulic oil is yet another added weight.
Everything airplane is a trade off.

I do mine from the bottom up using a squirt can. Just put towels near the
top vent. Connect and squirt.

I also use a pressure gun from the bottom, but I found a small bolt that
fitted the fill hole in the master cylinder, I drill this through the centre
of the bolt, pushed a clear plastic tube over the end of the bolt, then
screwed in the top of master Cylinder, then if you over fill , the fluid
will travel up the tube so you can see it, then just remove the gun from the
bleeder and let it drain back down till the fluid is at the required level
in the master cylinder.

NO MESS to clean up.

KR> THANKS STEVE and Gathering Funds

2014-09-19 Thread danrh at windstream.net
Everyone should know that there is a fund that is carried over from year to
year and passed on to each host. The purpose of that fund is to re-imburse the
host for expenses occurred during, before, and after that are related to
putting on the event.

Larry F. can discuss the details of this with the group and I hope he will,
because everyone needs to understand where the funds come from and how they are
replenished from year to year.

I am all for a fee, if this fund is not sufficient, but the Gathering has been
going on for many years without having to impose a fee and if the host is
getting hit with any expenses, that has been kept a secret from me.

I now turn the floor over to Larry.

PS: Thanks Steve. I hope you were not out any cash, but I know that you
expended a lot of energy and time, and it showed.

the
RVs have become so ubiquitous that the controllers all know the type of

into traffic flow. Unfortunately, KRs are so rare that most controllers have
no
idea what they are, so calling in as "KR 1213 Whiskey" doesn't help them. I
always use "Experimental 1213 Whiskey" for the KR. They usually refer to me as
either a GlassAir or an RV. When they ask aircraft type, most aren't familiar
with the KRs.

For my home built SuperCub, I always use "SuperCub 143 Whiskey" as that tells
the controllers everything they need to know about my performance in traffic;
s...l...o...w. I tried using "Experimental SuperCub", but the controllers
invariably shortened it to "SuperCub". Being experimental doesn't really
pertain to the performance, so doesn't tell ATC anything they care to know.

Did weight and balance on 6/11/14 assisted by Bernie Wunder and my wife
Shirley. Empty weight is 758 pounds and CG is 8.41 inches. With me on
board and full fuel, weight is 1066 pounds and CG is 13.41 inches; at that
loading, weight on the nose wheel is 90.6 pounds. Comparing that to the 63
pounds reported by Mark Jones, I consider my KR-2 to be satisfactory to fly.
I can still dump it on the tail skid trying to load or unload two adults -
have already done that three times. If the main wheels were two or three
inches further aft, probably would not have that issue; my design engineer
is on furlough. Gross weight per the FAA guidelines is 1146 pounds. These
numbers are basically the same as before the engine move, but now have
removed the 30 pounds ballast from the nose.

Did my biennial in a Cessna 150 on 6/11/14. Need to get the transponder
calibration done. (Piedmont Aviation, $125 at K2W6) Then ready to fly -

I do not recommend WordPress unless you want to spend some time learning how to
use it. It also requires much more time to organize your photos than you may
want to spend. I started using it for PantherBuilder.org, but now have
reverted back to the KRBuilder format using HTML pages built with IrfanView, as
I can put out an entire days fun of Airplane Building, in about 30 minutes. I
like the WordPress part for what it does and the way it makes the site look,
but to get information out quickly, ain't gonna happen until you get good at
it. You will also still have to get a host and pay a fee for that. I pay an
annual fee for KRBuilder.org and another one for PantherBuilder.org, and
another hosting fee for the place to put it. I use StartLogic and it costs me
about $250 a year.

KR> web sites

2014-04-21 Thread danrh at windstream.net
This is why I went to KRBuilder.org way back when I started on the Black Bird.
I found quickly that you usually get what you pay for. However, IrfanView
gives you muchy more than you pay for as it is a great tool and is free and has
been around for many years. I can give you a template that you can use on any
website with IrfanView and all you will have to do is fill in the blanks (
narrative (optional)).

Below is the first page or so of my "stub wing" website at

only about five "constructions" that you need to know. You can probably
look at what's below and the get the hang of it. You can copy one of my

KR> Tail wheel assembly

2013-08-27 Thread danrh at windstream.net
While I am a fan of AS and Wicks. I think they both do a great job. However,
when buying anything "tailwheel" why would you not get it from the people that
make the tailwheel? Aviation Products is a great company and they make a great
product.

Maybe they even make one that is pneumatic? But for the money, I can live with
my hard wheel.

If you need to use ProSeal, check out what the RV guys get from Vans. They all
use it and it costs much less than the ProSeal brand. I used it on my aluminum
wing tanks and have no leaks.

KR> Rudder pedals

2013-07-16 Thread danrh at windstream.net
Larry F. has a good method for hanging them and I am sure he will advise you on
that. For the tension, connect the system in a closed loop by connecting the
outside pedal on both sides via a pulley attached to the firewall. Use a
turnbuckle to be able to adjust the tension.

I was working on rudder pedals and have come across a couple of things.
The first is that I wanted to hang the pedals because the floor of the
fuselage is uneven. Has anyone hung pedals that have brake cylinders
attached? I think I have come up with a way that will work well and will
send pictures when they are done but I want to other solutions to the same
problem. The other is cable tension.. it doesn't look like there is any
cable tension. This is less of an issue for hanging pedals, but I can see
where this might be an issue for floor mounted pedals. Has anybody had a
problem with lack of tension in rudder pedals like the pedals falling
forward in flight?
