I didn't have to bend my mount at all using my specs, 28" top spread, 26"
bottom spread and 14-1/2" top to bottom spread.
I'll send you a picture of it.

Why yes I have and I have them here on my floor where you can put them on a
scale and weigh them, the springbar alone is very heavy. I did weigh them a
while back just to compare and it was sizeable.

KR> Back instruments??? links to follow

2012-11-18 Thread mfreem...@indy.rr.com
OK this just got REAL!

X-Vision and Xavion are at the App-Store now!

X-Vision is just $49.99, and gives a GPS/gyro-based backup of every instrument
in the standard-six panel in a REAL airplane!
As well, it gives you a perfectly-funtional synthetic vision system.
SO, if you want a simple app for your iPad or iPHONE (!!!) that shows a backup
for every one of your primary-six instruments in the panel in a real airplane,
I think this is the app to get.
I priced it to be easy, and if your instruments poop out in flight (imagine it
happening in night or IFR!) you got a nice big backup on your iPad, or even a
teeny one on your PHONE!

The really impressive App, though, at $99, is Xavion.

Xavion has everything X-Vsion does, plug an incredible new idea: 3-D guidance
to the best runway to land on in the event of engine failure!
Xavion is always running flight simulations of a power-off glide to every
runway in gliding range, and scoring each outcome based on it's likelihood of
success.
Then, Xavion shows you the path that had the HIGHEST score as a series of hoops
in 3-D on the synthetic vision display.
If the engine ever fails (or you just want to get down to the biggest runway in
gliding range), just hit the panic button in Xavion and aim your airplane
through the hoops! They will lead to the best runway within gliding range that
Xavion thinks you can reach, at a constant descent angle equal to a nominal
power-off glide angle for your airplane at power-off, half-flaps. (We use half
flaps so you can retract the flaps to stretch your glide if needed due to winds
or thermals. As well, you can lower your flaps the rest of the way if you have
a tailwind. Coming down at 50% flaps gives the most margin for error, since you
can raise or lower them from there to stay on the planned glide path as winds
or other conditions change).

As well, Xavion watches your every take-off, and memorizes the distance you
typically take to get airborne.
Then, whenever you line up on a runway, Xavion looks at the runway distance in
front of you (from it's huge airport database) and tells you what percentage of
the runway you are likely to use!

And Xavion does currency, trip planning, and weight and balance.

So, Xavion is trying to be an A-I copilot that lives on your iPad, helping you
out in every way that it can. As well, Xavion can run on an iPhone 4 or 5, so
in a pinch you can even run it on your phone if you are already using your iPad
for foreflight and want to keep that app running all during the flight.

So, this is a fascinating moment in time: We are starting to see portable
avionics that run on our iPads, and use at lest a primitive A-I to try to help
you out.. and this is only the beginning!

KR> Engine mount

2012-11-17 Thread mfreem...@indy.rr.com
(quote) The Thurston County Reusable Materials Exchange (/quote)
Sounds like what we used to call a "junk yard", oh how times have changed.

Well anyway, my post about that engine mount was a mistake on my part, I
intended for it to go only to Jeff Scott who sent me the plan sheet files. Then
I saw it pop up on the KRnet and realized what I had done but it was too late
to do anything about it.

No, I'm not an expert by any means but I have built a couple of KR mounts. I
don't have a welder so I farm that out to a local certified welder that does
beautiful work at $45 an hour.
So by the time you buy the materials/shipping and pay for the welding your
talking in the neighborhood of $300 plus or so.

I only work on things when I feel like it and that's why it takes me so long,
but when I do feel like it, I do a really good job as my wife has found out
many times.

I can take pictures (I like doing that) of the building jig and post them on
Photobucket for everyone to see if anyone would like but I don't intend to
build anymore mounts.

You see, It broke my heart when I crashed O"Blue but I new crying wouldn't do
any good (but I did). So it helps my emotions to repair and rebuild it, I'm
just not in a hurry.

I have been a pilot and flown from 1982 to the present with a few hundred hours
so I don't have "Buck fever" anymore and really I just enjoy building and
rebuilding. So If I live long enough, I intend to remake O'Blue. I have all of
the wood structure built and ready to remount the Cont. O-200-A engine. The
major difference will be the new AS5046 airfoil.
I think I will be reusing most of the original parts unless I update to more
modern instruments and such like a glass cockpit.

Good luck with your projects.
Dan.

Hi Jeff;

I thought I would let you know that I got my new Cont. O-200-A engine mount
finished today. I know, these things take time don't they.
Anyway I'm now going to prep it for painting so I can get the engine mounted
soon.
By the way, I mounted it to the engine for a test fit and it did great, it
clears the alternator with room to spare using my 28" top and 26" bottom
dimensions with 14-1/2" seperation top to bottom.
It matches up to the firewall just great.

Now the building fixture that I built will accomodate any of three engine
mounts for the KR-2/KR-2S depending on how one prefers to mount it to the
firewall and can easily be adapted to a VW if needed.

Well, have a great day and thanks for helping with the mount plans. Dan.

KR> KR2

2012-10-14 Thread mfreem...@indy.rr.com
The reason there is not a good KR or KR2S for Microsoft Flight Simulator is
because of the way the program itself works.
In Microsoft, the programmer tells the aircraft how it should fly, but of
course the programmer does not really know how it will really fly, only how he
wants it to fly and therefore it is not an accurate model of the real thing.

With X-Plane it's different. It works on a fluid dynamics program that looks at
all of the flight perimeters. The flight surface area, weight & balance,
airspeed, air temperature and all of that "Smart Stuff" and then responds by
showing you how the aircraft "Will" fly, and it is very accurate nowadays.

Have a look at the latest version http://www.x-plane.com/desktop/landing/

Now I have had free models of both the KR2 and the KR2S for X-Plane version 9
in several liveries and configurations for a few years now and many of the KR
guys have them , so you can ask them what they think of them.
Mark Jones is one of them but there are many others.

I have a couple of videos on YouYube of it here http://youtu.be/HI7yQro7kVo and
here
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEwI7XET4Ss&feature=share&list=ULuEwI7XET4Ss
It's a close as you can get untill you fly your own.

Dan.

KR> Engine mount

2012-07-03 Thread mfreem...@indy.rr.com

Jeff Scott sent me a couple of drawings for a engine mount.
jscott.pla...@gmx.com

I understand it is from Rand/Robinson and it is labled for use with the KR-2S
and the Continental O-200A engine with the caveat (warning) that if you use a
alternator on the bottom/rear of the engine it might/will interfere with the
lower cross bar of the mount, in which case it would need to be curved
somewhat. (note) The verticle distance from the top firewall mount holes to the
bottom firewall mount holes is 13" as per the drawing.

I altered my KR-2 mount demensions for my Original KR-2 by reducing the width
of the top firewall mount holes from 30" for the KR-2S to 28" for the original
KR-2 that I have and left the bottom holes at 26"across. I also increased the
verticle spread from 13" to 14-1/2" by raising the top holes 3/4" and lowering
the bottom holes 3/4" because that is what it was on KR-2, N4DD and the bottom
cross member cleared the alternator just fine.

The KR-2S drawings that I have, show the firewall as being 1-3/4" wider than
the KR-2 drawings that I have. I also made the mount 10-1/2" deep from the
firewall to the face of the isolator mount bushings. The drawings show 11-1/2"
from the firewall to the aluminum engine casting and if you add the Continental
isolator bushings you can subtract 1" from that depth.

I have made my construction jig universal in that I can assemble any one of
these mounts in the same jig by using the appropriately marked holes just in
case I need too.

KR> Engine mount

2012-06-22 Thread mfreem...@indy.rr.com

I'm not trying to beat a dead horse here but looking at the plan sheet for the
KR-2S engine mount and the Cont. O-200 engine that Jeff sent me, I noticed that
the spacing from the firewall to the O-200 engine mount casting (11-1/2") is
just that, it does not show any isolator bushings which in the case of the
O-200 would add another inch to the dimensions and make it (12-1/2") from the
firewall to the casting and I kind of feel that might be just a little too far
forward for the KR-2, so I made two sets of spacers for my jig so it can be
made either way, 10-1/2" or 11-1/2".
I also made the top horizontal mount spacing 28" for the KR-2 and 30" for the
KR-2S. The older KR-2 firewall was narrower than the new KR-2S by 1-3/4"
according to both of my plan sets. But, does anyone have real time experiance
with the KR-2 and the Cont. O-200 engine mounted farther forward than 10-1/2"
from the firewall to the standard O-200 isolator mount bushings?

I'm sorry, I was mistaken. Instead of 10 to 10-1/2" from the firewall it was 9

the starter and the firewall.
I'm using the original Cont. O-200 rubber engine isolater mount bushings and

KR> Engine mount

2012-06-21 Thread mfreem...@indy.rr.com
I've got the mount jig built and ready to start fitting the 4130 steel that I
got from Wicks Aircraft.
The original mount was so close to the firewall that you had to undue the mount
bolts and slide the engine forward to pull the starter off and that was with a
3/8ths" aluminum spacer. The battery was mounted on the floor under my knees to
get the weight forward and with two people in the plane it was tail heavy with
full fuel untill you burned some off from the wings. So I think moving the
engine forward will only help the weight and balance.

Of those who have the Cont. O-200 engine mounted in their plane, how far
forward of your firewall are the face of your engine mount bushings? Mine will
be 11-1/2" per the plans Jeff sent me. The old mount was about 10 or 10-1/2"
without the 3/8ths" spacers.

Ok I finally had some success with the KRnet search engine.

It seems like Rand Robinson recommended the crank centerline be 1-1/2" below
the top of the longeron.

But I'm still open to other suggestions.

I couldn't find anything on my plans, maybe I wasn't looking hard enough.

KR> Engine mount

2012-06-19 Thread mfreem...@indy.rr.com
Hi Larry;

I haven't been able to find Larry Flesners current email address, anyone have
it?

Do you recall where the crankshaft centerline of your Cont. O-200 is in
relation
to the top of the top longeron of your KR-2? For example, 1" or 2" below the
top
of the top longeron?
I seem to remember Mark Langford said his Corvair crank centerline was 2-5/16"
below the top of the top longeron for better visability over the cowl but my
search of the KR net didn't find anything.

Also, how deep is your engine mount from the firewall face to the face of the
mount bushings of your O-200 and would you change anything about it if you had
the chance?

I'm building a new mount.

Thanks for your input, Dan.

2009-10-31 Thread mfreem...@indy.rr.com
Hi JC;

Yeah, I suppose I could be in danger of hi-jacking myself couldn't I? Or taking
over an airport from the inside after landing.
Oh well, anyway I `sort of think that the EMT was mocking the condition of this
country now a days, like a tounge in cheek joke.

Years ago I flew myself from Indiana to New Mexico on vacation to shoot at the
Whittington Center ranges there. I had half a dozen handguns, several high
power rifles and over 60 pounds of ammo in the plane and no one thought a thing
about it. Oh how times have changed.

I already have another KR-2 under construction to keep me busy. It's has been
converted to the new airfoil
Have a great day J.C.

Hi guys and girls;

My eye surgery went perfect and took less than an hour, oh I'm so glad that's
all over with.

Hey, a word of warning. Watch what you carry with you while you are flying! If
your not already aware.

As they were cutting my clothes off of me on the runway, one of the EMT's was
going through my pockets and found my little 2" Swiss Army pocket knife that I
use for everything, mostly manicuring my nails and he asked the senior EMT
about reporting it to Homeland Security. I didn't here his answer but they
confiscated my knife anyway but the police haven't been here to arrest me yet.
This country is going plain stupid.
Well anyway, have a great week everybody.

I had my final surgery today, it was on my eye socket. All went very well and
they expect no further problems.
I can now transfer and pivot on my right foot with full weight which opens up a
whole new range of mobility options, so things are looking up in a big way and
my doctor says I'm about 4 weeks ahead of where he expected me to be, praise
the Lord.

I want to take this opportunity to thank all of the dozens and dozens of KR

encouragement and their prayers for my recovery, I simply cannot thank you
enough.
Have a great week everybody and thanks again.

because I have a spare anyway. Even my glasses were their with only the right
lense popped out which was easy for me to fix, so I don't even have to replace
my glasses now. If only I could say as much for Ol' Blue. I'm really sorry

Thanks to Larry and all who were involved, I really appreciate it.

KR> angle of incidence, AS504x

2008-10-12 Thread mfreem...@indy.rr.com
I have tried them all in X-Plane and unless someone can provide better
models of the airfoils, ie. RAF48, AS-5045, AS-5046 and AS-5048, I
have found that the RAF48 and AS-5045 work well. I have also settled
on +1.0 degree incidence for the main wing and
-1.0 degree for the horz. stab.. It seems to give a good level ride at
cruise. Also I have been using about 1 1/2 degrees of washout in the
wings which seem to give good performance near stall and good high
speed cruise performance. Keep in mind that this is in X-Plane.

KR> buying KR plans

2008-10-12 Thread mfreem...@indy.rr.com
You know, when I used to build and fly R/C models there was a magazine
called R/C Modeler and they used to sell the best and easiest to use
plans that I ever saw and I often wondered why someone didn't do the
same for home built because a lot of pilots came from the model plane
world and it would be a natural.

Which plane are you flying? The one I put on the net does not have a
retractable tail wheel unless someone changed it and it is (or was)
fully steer-able.

KR> Looking for a KR2 project for sale

2008-10-12 Thread mfreem...@indy.rr.com
Hi;

Sorry about the delay.

What kind of $ are you thinking of?

I don't know yet if I'll be wanting to part mine out.

I don't know if you fly X-Plane on your computer or not but I have
built a couple of KR-2 models for X-Plane to post for down load as a
free-ware on the Internet and I would like to do a real cool looking 3-
D interior using pictures from a KR pilots eye-view point and your
cockpit looks great. Would you be interested in possibly participating
with some digital pictures?

2008-10-12 Thread mfreem...@indy.rr.com
I've got a KR-2 in boat stage with wing spars and a Dragonfly canopy
with a finished Great Plains type 4 VW engine at about 94 hp that has
been run tested.

KR>X-Plane SIM of the KR

2008-10-12 Thread mfreem...@indy.rr.com
I may be speaking out of turn or even about something that I know
nothing about but if I'm not mistaken you would need those spec's for
MSFS 2004 to build a true flying model. But in X-Plane you build the
plane model and the sim tells you how it will fly. That's the big
selling point of X-Plane, you can change the wing airfoil model or the
size and shape of the body or tail and tell it what HP your engine is
and it will demonstrate to you how it should fly. By the way, all the
tools to do that come with X-Plane and the new scenery is a blast of
reality. Check out the screen shots at (http://x-plane.com) Regards,
Dan.

KR>X-Plane SIM of the KR

2008-10-12 Thread mfreem...@indy.rr.com
Hey, that's great, it will save me the trouble of trying to build it
myself this winter. I've got those versions of the KR-2 for X-plane
version 7x from Ameet but now I've got version 8.21 so it needed to be
upgraded.

In all the years that I've been involved with the KR's, I've seen few
that have been built to the same overall spec's.

Regard's, Dan.

KR> Type 4 V W engine

2008-10-12 Thread mfreem...@indy.rr.com
There was a guy named Darrel Haas who requested some info about the
type 4 V W engine this morning.

He requested that it be e-mailed directly to him but it came back as
undeliverable and I no longer have his original e-mail.

Try contacting me directly.
