The only person that's expressed any interest in the prop bank tried to
screw it out of $250 (self inflicted by me, trying to be the nice guy and
not getting the required deposit before shipment), so I'm going to be a real
hard-ass in future dealings. The pop bank web page mentioned earlier is
still there, and all of those props are still in the bank except for the Jim
Hill prop. There are a couple of 52 x 48's that you could try.

For more information on which props work with which combinations of engines
and airplanes, see the KRinfo stuff at
http://www.krnet.org/kr-info.html . But if you're real nice to me and send
me a check before I have to send you a prop, the prop bank is still open

See http://www.krnet.org/propbank/ for what's in the bank. The 52 x 47
Sterba is out, but due back soon. Your description sounds like a Sterba.
He usually leaves no vendor name on them other than the size etched into it,
and often has the buyer's name written inside the counterbore, especially if
he's repitched (in which case, he may or may not put the new pitch on it).
Sterba sort of "overates" his numbers, so Lee Van Dyke's 52x48 Culver might
be a good fit. Sounds like a trial is in order. Talk to Lee about it. I
doubt you could beat the price...

Netters,
I've been thinking the same thing for a while because I hope to take
advantage of the prop bank next year when mine is flying (of course, now I'm
jinx'd... :-).

One way to continue to add money is when you borrow someone's molds (ie,
Mark L's cowl molds, wheel pant molds, etc), drop a paypal to Mark Jones for
$20 or so. Since we're saving significantly more money than that by using
the molds, it seems like a small price to pay and especially with a cowl
mold, you're getting close to potentially benefiting from the prop bank
anyway. (Mark L- I hope you don't mind the reference). As a reminder, prop
bank donations should be sent to:

Mark,
Is there any place that lists how much is in the bank and what props there

KR> Prop Bank..what is it?

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Jones

For those who do not know what the prop bank is all about, please read the
following:

We have started a Prop Bank in which I am inventorying different size props for
all types of engines being used in the KR aircraft. What we are asking is that
you donate to the Prop Bank in order for us to purchase props. Right now we
have only two props in inventory. If you make a donation to the Prop Bank, that
gives you the right to borrow a prop from the Prop Bank with a small security
deposit. Why should you join the Prop Bank and borrow a prop? This will give
you the opportunity to test a prop on your airplane to determine if it is right
for you. If you like the prop, it may be purchased from the Prop Bank. If you
do not like the prop, you may return it and try another prop. Whether you buy a
prop you test or not, it will at least give you some test results which you can
use to help determine which prop is best for you before you do buy one.

If you have a prop you wish to donate to the Prop Bank, I will gladly inventory
it for you. Or, if you are willing to allow others to borrow your prop, please
let me know so that I may list your prop. There are also two props on the
loaner list right now.

This could really be a good program if we are able to get enough donations to
buy a wide variety of props. We will also be keeping stats on all prop
performances, on the different KRs they are used on, for your benefit.

If you are remotely interested in the Prop Bank, please help out with a
donation. Thanks to those of you who have supported this project so far.

Mark,

It might be a good idea to build a web page describing the program,
including your address, paypal instructions, and maybe even photes of the
props in inventory. This page could then be permanently listed on the KRnet
home page and be easily referenced when you send out reminder emails. Just
a thought...

The funds for the propeller bank are growing at a snails pace. Only three
people have made donations towards the prop bank since I took over the project

could use a lot more donations if we are going to make this work for us.

And let the record show that I forwarded the $550 that I collected from the
sale of KRnet stickers, as well as some generous contributions from a few
guys that really care to help other KR builders/pilots. That means that
only seventy bucks has been contributed lately. Maybe that's OK though, if
the rest of us will just throw an old prop in the kitty. I borrowed one
from William Wynne (that came through Mark Jones first) that had a big crack
in it and was unairworthy, but was perfect for ascertaining what my engine
could turn static. This led to the decision to buy Steve Makish's "old"
Sterba 52x66 that I think will be a good fit for my engine and speed. Even
if you have a prop that you'd consider unflyable, it might do somebody some
good in determining what prop their airplane can use.

Something I've been planning to do is lobby each of the prop makers for a
typical example of their KR prop, maybe one that's been returned, or maybe
even a brand new one. If somebody discovers they can use it, they send
Mark J a check for the full price, and Mark orders another one from that
same prop maker to take its place. It's almost a "buy on consignment" deal,
where the KR builder has the opportunity to try several different props,
only having to pay the $20 in shipping and maybe another $30 for to the fund
"for the service" if it doesn't work out. Fifty bucks is a cheap price to
pay to find out for sure if a prop isn't right for your airplane.

Since we're talking about props, I should mention that I talked to Troy last
night, and he told me about Jeff Duval's new Culver prop. CNC machined and
something like $500, delivered 14 days after ordering. Jeff is the lucky
guy that flys the the KR2 that I tried to buy about 10 years ago, the only
guy that managed to fly in to the "Columbia Fly-in" we had back in 1998.
Jeff thinks he'll make it to the Gathering, and Troy has reservations as
well...

2. Continental and the GP rear drive require props that rotate in the

The 60x61 is SAE 1 off a C-85.
The 52x48 is off a VW.

I have taken the reigns on the prop bank. If you have a prop you wish to donate
to the prop bank, please let me know.
I will inventory the props here at my house and will ship and track each one as
it is shipped out. This will work kind of like a library with a required,
refundable deposit on the prop. So, if you have a prop you would like to donate
to the prop bank please let me know.

The alternative to me keeping the prop here is to put your name on a list as a
supplier of a loaner prop and when someone contacts me needing a prop, I will
connect the person with you and you and him can make the arrangements.

I prefer to inventory and track the props from here as I feel it would be a
much more reliable system.

Any thoughts are welcome.

KR> Prop Bank

2008-10-12 Thread Dan Heath
Mark,

I think a prop bank where one person handles it and has the stock is the
best way to go. This person will have everything organized and be familiar
with inventory, packing, shipping, and handling the financial issues.
Otherwise, it will be hit or miss. What we need is one of those ground
adjustable so a person can tweak it until they find out what they really
need. What about spending the cash in the fund on one of those to start with
and get a deposit big enough to cover the replacement each time.

KR> prop fund becomes "KR Prop Bank"?

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Langford
A few months ago we took up a collection for a "prop fund", a sort of KR
prop bank where folks could swap, trade, sell, or buy a KR prop that didn't
quite work on one KR, but might be dandy on another. I collected about $550
to get the thing rolling, but I've yet to buy a prop. Obviously, I don't
want to blow it on one prop. So I'm hoping some kind souls who have an old
KR prop hanging around that they have no use for wouldn't mind selling it to
the fund for a bargain, so that somebody who's not quite sure what prop they
need would have a chance to try some different ones before he went out and
dropped the big bucks.

Now that I think about it, some folks may have a prop, but want to hang on
to it for a spare. If that's the case, you could let us know what you've
got and we'll put it in the "could be borrowed temporarily" class and if the
need arises, you could ship it direct to somebody to try out, with the
understanding that they owe you $50 for the privilege, you'd want it right
back, and if they trash it they have to buy it. Is there anybody out there
that could automate this and put it online? I guess I'm talking about a
realtime "KR prop bank" where folks could offer their old/spare prop to the
communtity to give folks the chance to "test drive" a prop to find out what
works best on their KR. I'd think that the borrower would send the lender
a check big enough to cover things if it never came back though. If things
worked out between lender and borrower, somebody might even get a good deal
on a prop, and the seller could now afford to get something that worked
better as his own "spare". Whatayathink?

On the WAF front, I'm told that RR has had trouble getting WAFs, so that's
probably the reason for the delay. She'll deliver eventually. So I don't
think I need to make any WAFs after all.

KR> prop fund becomes "KR Prop Bank"?

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Jones
Back when this first came up, I volunteered to handle the prop bank and will
still be glad to do it. I have room to store and inventory props and have
daily access to shipping and receiving. If we can get this prop bank going,
I too think it would benefit many folks.
