KR> Waiting for the plans...

2008-10-12 Thread Russ Kendall
Hi Nick,
I'm only slightly ahead of you. I recieved the plans a couple of weeks
ago. I already had some longeron material I was going to use for a VP
project, but figured if I was going to go to the trouble of building
something, I might as well build something big enough for my wife and I both
to fit in. I bought 4 sheets 4'x8' of 3/32, to go with mahogany or birch is
a personal decision, and a 4x4 sheet of 1/4" birch for the firewall. The
canopy from Todds is somewhere between here and Florida, the landing gear is
also on the way from Diehls. I bought 2 quarts of T-88 thinking that would
hold me for awhile. I'm anxious to get the boat built and on the gear. I had
a printing company print out the templates for the A5048/45 airfoil. I
thought they were kind of spendy at $120 for the print. I got the 4' by 16'
table up day before yesterday. I did all this pretty much without looking at
the plans. To go with Wicks or A.S.S. co is a personal decision. I'm not
much of a kit kind of guys, so I prefer to buy the stuff as I need it. I'm
not in a big hurry for the WAFs yet, as just getting the boat built is my
first priority. I wish you the best of luck, and a good build.

"OK - so I am placing the order now, but how much T-88 should I buy?"

I asked this question when I started building, and was told about three
gallons of glue, experience has shown this to be a pretty accurate
estimation, the centre section spars, boat, floor, ply skinning, tail and
wooden turtle deck have used just under two gallons. I bought T-88 in 1
gallon lots as I needed it.
As for Wicks vs Aircraft Spruce, both seem to do the job, Wicks seem a
bit more customer freindly, AS seem to have slightly lower prices, (but not
always ). Both are better to deal with than the locals.

Since it is going to take a while for the plans to come in (they still
haven't cashed my check yet, its been a week...) I wanted to see about
possibly getting the stuff I need so I can start right away, so I have some
questions for y'all that have already begun/finished.

I will be widening the fuselage to 40", but I want to make this as easy as
possible by using the kit parts as much as I can. I see the group 1 stuff is
made up of
1) Spruce Kit
2) Plywood Kit

I know I'm going to need the T-88 and the wing attach fittings should remain

I'll need to build myself since I am widening the cabin?

Nick,
Definitely go ahead and order your wood kits. All of the spruce comes in
long lengths and you cut it per plans or to the dimensions you need. You
will have plenty for widening the fuselage and even lengthening it if you
choose to do so. You can also call Wick's and ask them what the lengths of
the spruce stock will be and if you need longer just let them know and they
will ship to your requested lengths.

You might want to look at Mark Langfords tail section first. The spars for
his "new" Horizontal and Vertical stabalizers are longer. You also might want
to order the outside wing spars in the length needed to build those outer spars
to the length specified in the plans, so you don't have those foam extentions.

My memory my be a little foggy, but I don't think I had a great
deal of the plywood left over and for widening it my require some very
juditial layout on the sheets before you start to cut it up. But by all
means you could order the kits because they won't get there as fast as
you may want either. You can always start by building the table.

If you have a drill press or know anyone that does you can
buy the metal have it cut and you can drill it all out your self for way
cheaper. I bought the metal for the front and rear wing attachment from AS
for
less than $45. I bought the 1 1/2 inch strip for the front then bought a 9'' by
18" sheet and had the rears sheared off. My cut cost from a machine shop was
$20. If your looking to save money I would deffinateely looking into making
your

cause me $85 for anything I need chromated and painted. Just my opinion not

According to the fly-kr site, the T-88 costs 26 bucks. The closest I can

Also - before I do it, I just wanted to make sure this is correct - Aircraft

Nick,
Start out with the quart size. T-88-QT is the Wick's part number. You will
find you will but more than that as time goes on but that is all you need
for now. It goes a long way. That is the beauty of building a KR, you can

Yep, I would say it is. Wick's has their kits priced correctly in relation.
Just curious, have you considered dealing with Wick's? They actually built
one of the first KR's and started their aircraft business by doing so. Like

is the correct amount? Am I wrong?

Also - before I do it, I just wanted to make sure this is correct - Aircraft
Spruce has two wood kits, but interestingly enough - the KR2S spruce kit is
cheaper than the KR2 spruce kit. Is this a mistake?

KR> Waiting for the plans...

2008-10-12 Thread Nick Brennan
I have actually looked at Wicks a bit - but I've found Aircraft Spruce to be
very helpful in the past with other projects I have done. I hadn't even
heard of Wicks until I started researching the KR2

That said, at this point, I'm just looking for the best price for all of the
stuff I'm going to need. If Wicks has it, I'll go there. The other thing
too, is that Corona, CA is not far away, and therefore I can always pay a
personal visit to the folks at Aircraft Spruce.
