KR> how many KRs at Chino?

2015-03-27 Thread Jeff Scott
If you want to get an article published, you are going to need to sell the
author on the article, and in turn he will need to sell the publisher on the
idea that the article will help sell the magazine. Before writing an article,
one might want to see if you can convince Dave that it has merit and would be
of interest to the world of amateur aircraft builders. The problem you have in
doing that is that you want to publish an article taunting an aircraft that is
well outside the published bounds of the kit "manufacturer". We all know those
numbers are phony. Never-the-less, they are still what is published in the
advertising, including in "Kitplanes". Dave might be willing to write a second
article, but I suspect Kitplanes is more likely to think they have given the KR
line enough attention for a while.

FWIW, Dave is no idiot. He's an EAA tech counselor and long time writer for
Kitplanes. But he has to have something he can convince the magazine they can
sell. Somehow I'm thinking a rebuttal article isn't going to make that. But
put in the right light, it could happen. I've got Dave's contact information
if you're interested.

KR> how many KRs at Chino?

2015-03-27 Thread Earl Klinker
Hi all,

I am normally a quiet sideline type person as I have not built the KR
yet but am trying to get more planning done. I am wondering if it would
be possible to give Dave Prizio the praises he deserves by attending the
gathering and writing the article but also have the experts like Larry
Flesner, Mark Langford, Mark Jones and others write a followup that
highlights the realities of this beautiful aircraft to include a
realistic data sheet that would be an average of the current planes.

I know I have many questions but am researching the archives first. My
plan is to build the KR2S but to fit under the LSA category. This goes
along with my dad's, and my, philosophy of "Fair Weather Sunday Pilot"
and keeping cost down as I cannot afford the commercial LSA aircraft.

Just my 2 cents.

Hope to see some of you at Sun 'n Fun.

Thanks, Jeff. That's exactly what I saw negative about the
article. You didn't mention that it is a sweet flying , economical
airplane. My apologies to Dave Prizio. I guess he did his job by
attending and asking questions. It appears I should be beating up on

like to see an up front honest article about todays KR's and how they
are a great "bang for the buck", nice flying, sweet little

Very few KRs "cruise" at 180 mph. Very few KRs make a 980# gross weight. Very
few KRs are 520# empty weight. Over the last 20 years, the members of this
forum have made great strides in improving the handling characteristics and
safety of the plane. Adrian Carter's quote of a sudden hard breaking stall

2015-03-27 Thread Jeff Scott
Larry,

Your first post started off with "Well, well, well, another magazine article
written from someone's basement." Dave Prizio, a staff writer for Kitplanes,
was at the KR Gathering and interviewed many of the pilots and the manufacturer
that's selling plans and parts. Do you have a better suggestion for how he
should cover the KR Gathering and learn about the KRs? As an outside observer
at the KR Gathering, he wrote what he heard from the "factory" and the pilots.

Overall, the article was upbeat and portrayed the aircraft in a positive light.
Yes, there are some glaring errors, omissions and misstatements. Every news
or magazine article you read will have them. You don't have to agree with my
opinion that it's positive press, but the comments implying that the guy was
writing in a vacuum are false and unbecoming.

How would he know to ask about the "new" airfoil and other information contrary
to the "factory" specs unless someone he interviews talks to him about it? He
wasn't making a study of the aircraft. He was doing a fluff piece to give
Steve and the KR line some positive press.

Very few KRs are 520# empty weight. Over the last 20 years, the members of

I stand corrected on the "40 KR's" but I stand behind the rest of my
"nit picking". Someone not familiar with the KR aircraft and reading
the article might go away with the impression that it may well cost
$35,000 to build, it will fall out of the sky when it stalls, that
they can build a 180 mph KR that will weigh 540 pounds. In reality,
the KR is not a good two place cross country aircraft unless widened
at the shoulders and the CG managed well, that the typical KR2s now
being built, with a 100 hp engine and electrical system, will
probably come in at 700+ pounds, that the 980 gross in the USA is not
a limit, that you're not going to get 180 cruise unless you demand
that most of your 100 horses help pull the wagon and, that in fact, a
well built KR is a safe, sporty, nice flying airplane as anyone that
has any time in a KR will attest to. Without re-reading the article,
I don't recall anything about the new airfoil and the efforts of the
KR community to bring it to reality.

Those of us that have been part of the KR community for 25 years or
more easily read past and discount the half true or untrue
information in the article based on 40 year old company supplied
marketing information used in the article. Only factual information
based on KR's being built today will help bring more builders to our
community and would help to eliminate the many abandoned projects we
see posted on the net weekly. Anyone starting a KR needs to have a
realistic idea of what the final results of thousand of hours of

KR> how many KRs at Chino?

2015-03-26 Thread Jeff Scott
Guys, go back and re-read the article. The number "40 or so" was in reference
to the number of attendees, not the number of planes. Number of attendees was
something well north of 40, but most of the time I saw 30 - 40 folks hanging
around. Dave Prizio was there and talked to a number of builders and pilots.
The quotes about stalls and speeds came directly from various KR pilots and
published Rand Robinson/NvAero numbers, which he credits with the quotes.
Some, like Adrian Carters quote about stalls he must have found on line.
Adrian was on the KRNet some 15 years ago, but I haven't seen anything posted
from him for many years, so I don't know where Dave dug that up. In reference
to Mark, he was giving you credit for creating the EAA Webinar. Dave may very
well have thought you attended as your name came up a number of times and there
was some confusion about whether you were going to show up late or not.
Whether you actually made it there or not wasn't really pertinent to the
statement giving you credit for creating the webinar.

Overall, based on the fact that the information in the article came directly
from the KR pilots, I thought Dave wrote a fair piece. The only way he could
write a fair article about the flight characteristics of the plane would be if
one of us handed him the keys and sent him off for an evaluation. I'm not
handing over my KR to another pilot. How about you?

Give the guy a break. Dave Prizio gave the KRs and the KR gathering some good
publicity. As a whole, he portrayed the KR line as a small, high performance,
inexpensive aircraft that is highly customizable. I can't disagree with any of
that. The stuff you guys are griping about is noise level, nit picking
non-sense.

I'll be there. Sadly it will be in a spam can. But I can bring

I will be camping with the "real" men. And of course I'll bring some

Joe,

Counting the days. I leave here on Thursday the 27th as soon as daylight and
weather permit. Flight time is 3.5 hours, but I will have to make one fuel
stop, since I only have 21 gallons now and don't want to stretch it. I am
looking forward to the first really long Xcountry in the Black Bird on steroids
and using my iFly720 for navigation.

Man, I love flying this bird.

I may be looking for rides to and from the Holiday Inn, as I am a weenie when
it comes to camping and need my shower and air conditioned room.

I have been looking forward to and planning for this all year and now it is
almost here. Now I just need to pray for good weather.

See y'all there.

Dan.

more economical than Corvair's? Looking to get as much HP for my GPH.

Weight wise 180lbs, nice for 120hp, but have read emails from a couple of
owners whom both commented about heating problems, even with the factory
made plenums

I'd like to see one of these in a Midget Mustang (M1) would preform nicely
20 more ponies 50 less weight than an older Cont.0-200, new LSA 0-200
lighter though.

I should point out that Ken Thomas ditched the Subaru in favor of a Jabiru

As Mark mentioned, your registration will not post immediately. Bob
will update the list as he has time. Rest assured, if you submitted,
it will show, eventually. As the Gathering gets closer, Bob will be giving
me more frequent updates for shirts and hats orders. If you have any
questions, get back to me personally at fles...@verizon.net.

I picked up the finished Gathering awards this morning. One more detail
taken care of. They are (Best KR) (People's Choice) (Best panel and interior)
(Best firewall Forward) (Greatest Distance Flown). I'm betting Richard Shirley
will be taking at least one of them home in his KR, if he has

Dan I'll have to agree with you on this point. No I've never flown a
KR BUT as an example try flying a Cobra helicopter with the short side =
stick
located in the front seat. Takes a lot of practice to keep the damn bird
within flight limits. It can be done but the first time is a bitch and
that's why the Army has another pilot in the back seat to take over when
things get hairy.
Now on to how this relates to KR's. Recent taildragger time would be
of immense help but first and foremost, lengthen the stick as the little
bird will not respond as fast to control inputs as it will with the =
short
stick. After one becomes acquainted with the handling characteristics of
their bird they can easily replace the longer stick with a shorter one. =

Fight hours - I had about 450 in many different kinds of airplanes. 80
hours taildragger Cessna 185 time. Flying my dad's KR2 -Revmaster 2180 turbo-
was no problem - only noticed real sensitivity when at gross weight. This
tendancy is much better in N41768 - the KR2S. I feel that flying different
airplanes will give you an edge as far as anticipating and responding to the
airplane. Getting a couple flight in a KR will be invaluable as well. If you
get
a chance to try your hand with RC - remote control - airplanes it may also
help with keeping steady hands.First flight should be done with a couple
things in mind. First - be confident in you engine and plane - Initial
rollout
should be performed and the only thing you should check is oil pressure and
RPM. KEEP YOUR EYES OUTSIDE! This is essential to keeping an accurate
centerline. You may glance down at the Airspeed to insure you are achieving
liftoff speed but your visual cues should be all you need. A little (again..
a
little )backpressure for tri gear and wait for it to lift off. Taildragger
hold a little forward elevator until the tail comes up and then transition to
up elevator smoothly. As you fly off the ground, keep your eyes outside.
Keep wings level and smoothly climb out - dont worry about engine gauges or
VSI
or anything like that. You can feel what should be right. Your ears will
keep you attuned to the engine performance. Climb to pattern altitude and if
everything sound and feels good then throttle back and level off and
then...you can check gauges. I think more people are hurt by flying inside
the
cockpit than if they used their other senses and were smarter about it.
There
comes a point in time that you are comitted and checking gauges isnt
important.
Think about it. Cut down on the possible distractions and you should have
a safe first flight
Maybe just a couple pointers - my 2 cents worth...

Bill Clapp and N41768 303 hours and more to come now the engine is back in
and running. After a few more hours of testing ---TURBO...

If you need to find someone to get some dual in type or similar contact the
EAA. They have a listing of flight technical advisors that should be able
to help you out. As far as getting similar training flying a rv and doing
no flap approaches would help. It's my opinion and the opinion of some very
high time tail wheel pilots that if you're not slipping it on approach then
the approach was set up wrong. Low powered approaches will KILL YOU!
Remember altitude is your friend and a good forward slip will bleed off your
altitude in a hurry.

Also contrary to the popular belief you DO need a tailwheel endorsement to
fly tailwheel experimental aircraft. You will find this in your aircraft's
operating limitations which were established during you flight test phase
and are indeed in effect after you've flown off your 40 hours. You'll find
wording in your operating limitations that reads something similar to: "The
pilot-in-command of this aircraft must, as applicable, hold an appropriate
category/class rating, have an aircraft type rating, have a flight
instructor's logbook endorsement or possess a "Letter of Authorization"
issued by an FAA Flight Standards Operations Inspector"

KR> How many flight hours before flying KR ??

2008-10-12 Thread Frank Ross
There are low-time spam-can pilots who have flown a KR without any previous
time in a KR and I applaud them. I had the same experience that Steve Eberhardt
did when I flew with Marty Roberts - I made an extreme effort to hold my hand
very still and the plane either went nose UP or nose DOWN. Steve was an avid
regular on KRnet until then and he quickly decided to build an RV. I believe
he's still on KRnet. At the time almost no one except Marty was offering even
as much as a ride in a KR and I felt very lucky to get one quick ride in
Marty's plane, so the question of "dual" in a KR was out of the question.
I flew a Vans RV-4 with no problems and found it a very easy plane to keep
straight and level and also very responsive. A low-time pilot who has only
flown Cessnas or Pipers is extremely ill-advised to get into a KR alone and try
to fly it. Bill Gaudlip (who built and sold Jeff York's KR) found, the
"high-speed taxi" can turn into an inverted take-off and landing pretty quick.
He was lucky to have gotten out with minor injuries and a plane he could
re-build and sell.
Susan Rand told me a few years ago at Sun-N-Fun that she often flew with Ken
when she was very small. Years later when she took flying lessons in a Cessna
she thought the controls were broken because nothing happened when she tried to
move them. The instructor laughed and said that was because she wasn't pushing
on them. She had thought it would be like the KR where you barely pressed and
got a real change in the plane.
I believe Bill Reentz when he writes about flying his KR-1 by moving his head
in the direction he wanted to go.
Obviously Ken Rand had no chance to get some time in a KR before he flew his.
Lots of others have done it too, and maybe you'll be one of them.
You will have a lot more fun on that first flight in your KR if you've spent
a lot of time flying in a KR with someone who knows how to fly one.
And, by-the-way, good luck getting names of EAA tech advisors who know
anything about KRs or especially have ever even SAT in one, much less feel
confident to fly one. Your best chance for either is right here on KRnet.
On those last two points, I do not think your results will vary much.
  Frank Ross

I had 40-45 hours of recent flight experience in a supercub, taildragger,
besides the first 2 rally eventfull landings due to engine and prop
problems, the only real challenge was the sensitivity of the elevator. 5
minutes of flight time fixed that. Landing proceedures are well written out
by several people on the net with speeds. follow them and you will have no

KR> How many flight hours before flying KR ??

2008-10-12 Thread Orma
Hi Jeff
After posting I did realize that There are a lot of pilots who have other
experiences. But, in the old days 84 all we had was the news letters, and
seeing a KR was limited to Oshkosh. My first flight was a mistake. We had
all been told to have lots of hours on the engine to ensure it would perform
as required without worry and to get lots of taxi practice. I had about 10
hours when my first flight occurred. As most TD pilots will agree, the
hardest part of flying a TD is the transition from tail down to tail up and
vise versa. On my first flight, on a 50X5000 foot runway I applied TO power
and began the first of three transitions, all at full power. As I went to
lift the tail for the third time, I had both airspeed and angle of attack.
The plane popped into the air and I decided to fly rather then attempt
landing for the first time without the pleasure of having flown the
airplane.

This was all we had. Everyone continually talks about getting a ride in the
KR. You're not going to get enough to make you a good KR pilot. Regs how
require a TD endorsement. As all the comments have indicated, even with the
KRnet, getting a ride or quality time in a KR is still not likely to happen.
After building a KR you have to get in and get to know every switch, knob,
control, gauge ect. so that it/s use is automatic. In the 21 years of
flying the KR, I say that it's just another low wing aircraft. Another
point is that the average KR is not a high performance Aircraft. Most KR's
are fixed gear and only fly about 150 at best and stall at around 52 mph.
If built correctly, it will have a gentle straight stall.

The old builders of the KR were motivated by Bang for the Buck. It seems
that today's builders by and large have more resources (money). After fight
training, I could not afford to keep renting aircraft and decided to build
the KR. During my time building, I was only able to fly a few times, I
needed to finish the KR for affordable flying. After 10 years in the KR, I
had 3 hours with an instructor in a Cessna 205 Bird Dog (WarBird) and
learned a few things to make the transition easier. All of which were
mentioned in the current or past threads on this subject.

Although the KR is unique, cute, quick, it is stall just a light low wing
aircraft.

Orma,

I did not realize that my asking about your story would elicit so much
controversy as well as assumption that I was asking for advice or
information on just jumping in a KR and taking flight.. I just wanted to
hear your story. I like to compare information.

I have already flown my KR for several hours, however it has been down for
over a year for minor alterations and modifications. Thought it would be
down for a month. That was as I mentioned over a year ago.

Also my KR is a nose dragger, not a tail dragger. Several posts on the
subject seemed to assume that the subject was specific to tail draggers.

Again.my original request was just to hear your story. I believe each
person's story has both entertainment value as well as learning value. I
hope to have my KR back in the air soon but plan to probably have a EAA tech
examiner/ CFI with me because of the length of time since last flight and
my bi-annual is do anyway.

KR> How many flight hours before flying KR ??

2008-10-12 Thread jeffyor...@qx.net
Orma,

I think this is an interesting subject and of course I would like to hear
more about your first flight experence.

How did you find the aircraft to fly as compared to what you had been
flying? What steps did you take to your first flight. At 60 hours I would
not suspect that you had a lot of high performance time. Maybe you didn't
have any high performance time.

Your flight time and situation would be more common to the average KR
builder who is getting ready to make his first flight verses the high time
pilot who has flown a lot of different aircraft before his first KR flight.
There are probably a lot of first timers who have not even been able to take
a ride in a KR.

Of course your KR is a tail dragger as apposed to the very common nose
dragger that so many are building today. So a variation of technique and
such would be expected.

I am always interested in hearing more.

Tell us more.

KR> How many flight hours before flying KR ??

2008-10-12 Thread bo...@hatconversions.com
Jeff,
Just an opinion from an old timer with about 1800 hours in
experimentalsDon't do it...Besides it being an FAA
requirement that you be checked out in kind and type, you will hurt
yourself or tear up 10 years worth of work.
Little airplanes don't fly like big airplanes..My Mustang and my
Cassutt would both snap in stall recovery if you over controlled
them. I have a high time aerobatic friend who flies a Super
Decathalon. He over controlled a stall recovery at 6000 feet and went
thru 2000 before I finally took the controls and got us straight and
level again. Keep in mind this is a pilot who did't get disoriented
being upside down, just everything he did magnified the problem.
The guy that bought my Cassutt was a 737 Captain that thought he knew
everything. he tore it up and hurt himself in less than a week.
The experimental ranks are full of some of the most helpful people in
the world. Find a short coupled two place and get some dual before
you try this..Bobby

KR> How many flight hours before flying KR ??

2008-10-12 Thread Dan Heath
That is great advise, but where do you get a short coupled, high performance
two place with dual control, that someone will let you get time in? I am
not advocating this, but I had 155 hours of almost nothing but C-150 time
along with a 5 hour course in a Citabria where I never got to take off or
land and some time in a Champ, courtesy of a friend. That was all I could
get before I had to teach myself to fly a conventional gear KR2. You just
have to do what you can do. Everything helps, but in the end, you will just
have to take the bull by the tail and do it.

Unless, Bill Clapp puts in Dual Controls and you can get him to come and
give you some dual training. Even then, it won't be just like your KR is
going to be. That is why, the more you can get in anything that will fly,
the better off you will be.

I have been getting some stick time with a friend in a nice RV, following
along on take off and landing and then flying. However, he always lands slow
with full flaps, well that ain't gonna be the same as landing in a hot KR in
ground affect, with no flaps or other drag devices.

Oh, and it is not an FAA requirement for experimental's. Maybe it should be
 but it is not.

This is very good Dan, but I would also suggest going to KRNET and
Langfords website and read Bill Reents account about his KR-1 He taxied
it for ten hours to get the feel before he flew it and it made me sick
because I started the KR-1 in 1970 and built the fuselage and tail and
the wing spars and had the gear and engine and prop but let my good
buddies talk me out of it because they said I would kill myself so I quit
and missed 1,000 hours of fun.

KR> How many

2008-10-12 Thread Dan Heath
I am not a believer in the high speed taxi training regimen. I was about
convinced to give it another try, by my buddies here on the KRNet, (crashed
my first KR doing that,) but my RV friend who has been so kind as to take me
flying with him to get me re-oriented to the sensitive airplane, tells me
that Vans of RV, strongly advises against that sort of training. He says
that more people and planes are hurt by doing that than anything else. It's
OK, I expect the flames.

If you think about it, you are continually putting yourself in that
transition that is the most difficult to deal with. Yes, I know, if you and
your plane make through that, you can probably make it through anything.

How many, as in DAZE, well I don't know, but I made my reservation at the
Holiday Inn today. The rate is $68 and change. Larry must have kept on
negotiating. Good job Larry.

Curry and all,
I had about 112 hours over a 10 year period in powered aircraft. I also
am very comfortable in the air from my hang gliding era over a 20 year
period of around 500 hours.
I don't condone my own decision to test fly my plane and I read and
studied everything that I could get my hands on. I also got current
training within days before hand. It was a decision that I did not take
lightly and would most likely not encourage any one to try.

ONLY 212 days till the Gathering. This could be a record breaking year as we
already have 12 pilots committed to flying their KR's to the Gathering and it
is only February. I know of several who will most likely fly in that have not
pre-registered yet. GET PUMPED UP, finish those planes so you too can fly to

74 short days till the Gathering. Make your plans NOW to BE There. You will
never regret it. I have missed only one Gathering since 1998 and that was only
because of a new born baby girl. That was a good excuse for not being there.
Please do not make any excuses for not coming. Help us make this Gathering even
better than last years Gathering. Last year broke all Gathering records (I
think) for both planes and people in attendance. Let's do it again this year.

KR> HOW MANY DAYS ???

2008-10-12 Thread Bill Page
Mark, Good luck with your sanding. My KR is complete with the filling and
sanding, it has been primed, sanded, painted, clear coated, sanded again for
the graphics and hopefully the graphics will be complete in about two weeks.
Then the inspection and the first flight. My theme will be a KR wrapped in
the American flag in 3 diminsion from cowling to the empinage with flames
just on cowling and a small portion of the wing. It will be tastefully done
but not overdone as most planes with this theme is. The flag will have the
appearanace of waveing in 3D, a small WWII nose art of the Stature of
Liberty using airbrush technique will be on the right side of the fuselage
just behind the canopy. The tail numbers will be 22 carat gold leaf with
shadows. A volunteer model will be used for the face of Miss Liberty.
Hopefully the 40 hours will be flown off by Mt. Vernon time so that I can
fly it to the KR Gathering. My KR may not be the best around, but I will be
a proud owner. Have fun sanding.

KR> How many days?

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Jones
ONLY 135 days till the greatest event of the year. You have got to be there.
Why would you miss out on an event which makes history and this year will be
one for the record books. Build...sweatsand...cry and sand some
more...whatever it takes to fly your KR to the Gathering. It does not matter if
you have that final paint on it or not. If you can not fly your KR there then
walk...hitch hikeride your bike...take a train or drive your car. Thank God
I will not have to drive my car to any more Gatherings. As a matter of fact I
am going to fly some more this evening to get those test hours behind me. Those
135 days will be gone before we know it and we will be cruising sacred ground
once again. Just do ityou've got to do itbe there.

KR> How many days?

2008-10-12 Thread Jim Sellars
Fellows:
With a bit of luck we, (my buddy Kipp and myself) will be at the next
flyin for the first time. A Canadian and American KR flight of two. Now it's
gonna be a struggle to get there from the dark cold north, but if we arrive,
well it will be a great time cause up here we got the best sense of humour
of anyplace, and we'll bring lots with us.
On another note I have a set of rudder peddles and a two stick assembly
for sale real cheap. Found them while working on my KR-2 the other night.
all hardware included for the peddles and looks like a pretty complete
set-up for the dual stick. Make me an offer and I will send it to you.
Best regards

Hey Mark,
I was convinced before, however with a plea like that,
this event will not be missed by me. I'm totally
sold, now all I need is a ride in a KR2 when I get
there. So get the test hours burned off of that jewel
of yours. I'm also going to nag you about bringing it
to Oshkosh, how 'bout it.

It would be real impressive if we could double number of KR's at our
gathering this year . Hay!! Mark J. How many days left till the KR
Gathering 2005??

Orma and everyone: That would be only 232 DAYS TILL THE GATHERING. Start
making your plans to be there now. I will be flying my plane in this year
however, I may be taking the UGLIEST KR award this year because I have a
feeling once the weather finally lets me in the air, I may just fly it in
primer for ever. Everyone get working on finishing up those KR's so we can
have another record breaking Gathering. GET PUMPED !

Mark-- That is what I am afraid of. So many of my finished parts are
going to the paint shop next week along with my truck that a young lady
adjusted the side of a couple weeks ago. It still looks good for my first

Me too. Last year, I was absolutely positive that I would be flying to this
one. We are getting close, no airplane noises, but I am almost finished with
the wiring and plumbing. After we turn it back over, it is on to getting the
engine on and running, a W&B for engine placement and then we are very close

Steve,

If your observation is correct, I have less than 20 hours to complete
the KR! I'm somewhere past 80 hours now. I don't recall exactly
but I think 82 is close. Those items WILL be completed at some
point, even if I have 200 hours on the KR. After 13 years of building
I'm not about to quit with the finish line in site.

After 13 years of building I'm not about to quit with the finish line in
site.

After 13 years you certainly deserve all the fun you are having. Your
bird (and Chris Gardiner's) are my constant motivation - I look at them
regularly. Hard to believe that they are both almost stock - the cabin
looks pretty spacious in the pictures that show you seated (and
grinning).

A message for those that want to re-design the bird - stretch it a few
inches, widen the cabin (and FW) - and get it dome quick.

The only KR question mark remaining will become clear when flink dink
flies 56ML - this should provide clarity on the incidence set-up.

Take care
