KR>Yahoo Groups
Mark, About Yahoo groups. I was on a list there for years that one day just disappeared without warning. The Group didn't break any of Yahoos rules. We think it was at the government's request because the group was about income taxes. The state versions of the national list were also shut down by Yahoo. We started the group up again and were shut down a second time within two days. The group had to host the list offshore to keep our so called "freedom of speech" alive. It is not because the information we exchange is wrong or illegal, It is because the government does not want us spreading the the word that there is no liability for income taxes. Everything we post can be traced to USC Title 26, Supreme Court Decisions, or US District Court Decisions. It's all about the Law. KRnetters, After talking with Mark Langford, I did some research on yahoo groups. It seems like yahoo has a lot more to offer as compared to our present mailing list. The features of yahoo groups are: 1) Members can receive messages in single email or digest format 2) Group moderator can strip out attachments to eliminate virus attacks 3) Joining of the group may depend on moderator's approval 4) The first email from a member may also depend on moderator's approval 5) You can have more than one moderators 6) Automatic archiving. 7) Archives may be open to public (just like we have it now) 8) Allows members to hide their email addresses from the group. However, if you hide your email address then you are not allowed to take part in the polls and you are not allowed to post messages via email 9) Allows moderators to individually block members Other nice features available only if you have a yahoo email account. These features can be controlled, as to who edits them. (for example upload of files can be done only by moderators etc..): 10) Live chat with other members of the group 11) Place to upload files 12) Place to upload photos 13) Place to store associated links (I have seen many members ask the group about some website link they lost) 14) Place to create a Database... this feature can be used for many things 15) Place to hold polls 16) Place to create a calendar of events 17) There is some feature for promoting the group, but I wonder if that costs something? 18) It is all free. I know a lot of people are going to resist getting a yahoo email account, but I have had one for a long time and I am very happy to say they are the best in spam protection and not to mention... the inbox is 100MB in size and it is free. I have setup a group already and since Mark likes control :o) I don't mind making him a moderator. To check out the group go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/krnet/ And.. no, I don't work for Yahoo neither do I own stock in Yahoo... (hmm maybe I should?) Please, stick it in your ear, pay to play like the rest of us, their is no free rides. Look how you stated your post, "KRnetters", not Yahoo readers! Yahoo Groups is a joke, why waste your time. I'm not putting up with beginning part of the all American sucker list with my email address again. Also, the popup ads and ads which require you to click through them to read the next post is a joke. The problem "Mark Langford" has experienced, is but one hiccup in many months of useful service, and this type of service is available at dozens of other places. I too have been on Yahoo groups and found them to be a real pain in the kiester. The pop up ads are endless and the resulting spam is not worth it. Personally, I will not sign up to a Yahoo list. I vote to keep the list we have. If you have a photo to post, send it to me and I will put it on my web page for all to see. KRnetters, Before you lash out on me (like Larry here), please bear in mind a few things: 1) There is no need to get a new email address at yahoo to be able to use their groups. You don't even have to go to yahoo's website to look at the messages you can get it in your email inbox. Just like you do now. 2) I was merely listing the features of yahoo groups so that we (or our moderator) can use that information to compare with other groups to make a decision of moving if there is a need. 3) About the popup ads: There are no pop up ads if you receive the messages in your inbox. If you get popup ads they could be because of the ISP you are using or the possible existance of spyware on your system, I recently had to clean my computer due to spyware and I don't have any popup problems anymore. I also use Google toolbar to block popups and yes it is free to download and yes it is wonderful tool and no it does not have any advertisement. 4) I am not going to defend yahoo groups. but I am going to respond to people who don't have their facts straight. The fact is, I was researching the features and I informed all of you of them.. thats it. The fact is I have used yahoo for email and groups both with success. The fact is, to experience all the features of yahoo groups I created and tested the group that I sent you an email about. The fact is, I am not selling yahoo to you, just giving you information that you can use to make a decision and I hope the rest of you (Larry has already crossed the bridge) don't use this to attack me. Ameet, Stop pointing the finger at me, you went out and created the Yahoo Groups on your own. So far the response as been Negative to your idea. And here you come again. Frankly if the KRnet as a group wants to use an alternative method for KRNet Post Delivery, will vote on it, and will also vote on WHO it is that will control that information. To date, I see no problems with the current distribution method utilized by the KRNet; and I'm not willing to return to ANYTHING Yahoo provides and then denies without notice. But, you can still post messages via email with your address hidden by the list software, should you desire. In addition, the Mailman software offers the ability for the list admin(s) to administer the list entirely via email should they so desire. Or, entirely via the web interface. Other features it offers that Yahoo Groups does not include: * the ability to stand as a list to newsgroup (nntp) gateway. * ability to separate the roles of admin and moderator. * MIME digests (each message in the digest is a separate attachment, allowing you to easily reply to an individual message, several mail readers can use this feature to great advantage) The remainder of the features of Y!G (trimmed to save bandwidth) are redily available through other open-source portal software easily enough. The software, Mailman, is absolutely free. I run a copy on my personal server, and have used its nntp gatewaying feature at a previous job. (I also run a web portal for car enthusiasts).

I'm not willing to return to ANYTHING Yahoo provides and then denies without notice Larry A Capps Naperville, IL + I have been (tried to be) a member of various Yahoo groups over recent years = ExperimentalAvionics = GP-4 = Innodyn (Imagine a turbine KR) = jabiruengines = Q-LIST I cannot remember two straight weeks without some hassle or other - often more frustration then they are worth. When they do work - the moderating (on some) is really poor. Other than still being a bit sad that our intrepid moderator booted Glynnis into touch - I think the KR facility is extremely well managed. It is without doubt the most useful and constructive site of its kind and a significant contributor to the success of the airplane. By direct comparison, the KRnet and its services /facilities has been bullet proof for ages - the last hiccup was corrected before most of us even knew the problem existed. I am with Larry AC on this one. Steve J
