Also, BTW, the writing rules on the wiki are merely so that newly introduced strings do not repeat the same past mistakes; the intention is not to have everything already existing match them, precisely because of the workload it would impose on all of us, as András said. Re: [libreoffice-l10n] Untranslatable string on website
Thank you Michael, for digging up the old threads. Just the other day, on the Spanish Telegram channel, somebody was wondering why the “Start Certificate Manager” button didn’t seem to do anything, and then Juan Carlos from the Spanish team kindly explained to them that they needed to install external key management software. If we had that message translated, I guess much confusion would have been solved. I hope that this is addressed in the new website codebase at least. It will become less of a surprise when you realize that Weblate works as a frontend for Git. Yes, there is no Slovenian video now, but we have created video translations before, and I expect that we’ll be able to translate them well before August. What I do think is that this thread’s tone became unnecesarily alarming for little reason. On Sophie’s point about the legality of embedding a video in French-language pages, that is ultimately a question for our legal folks[*], but I see no reason why we couldn’t localize that video. [libreoffice-l10n] On strings with errors and people trying to fix them
(Disclaimer: own opinion, I don’t speak for the project, blah blah blah) Hi all, I feel that I need to bring this up in order to have some perspective. As you know, the LibreOffice project is developed by a huge extent by people whose native language is not English. (But even if most of our developers were native English speakers, they are human too—so this is not a crucial factor. I know this because I teach English and have studied some linguistics at uni.) People will make mistakes sometimes in their language. It’s normal and ACCEPTABLE. We do not want to crucify anyone for not uttering perfect sentences all the time. I, for one, am very prone to accidental errors—even in my first language! And even with my TOEFL pBT score of 663, I write or say things that are not quite right, from time to time. The project needs to be able to fix those errors (which include spacing and capitalization, as well as typos and terminology). We NEED people fixing translatable strings for those errors. We need NOT to berate them for causing us extra work in Pootle. I also volunteer as a localizer for Wikimedia. Their strings change every single day. mozilla-central (equivalent to our “master” branch) is also changing rapidly, and even more so today because they’re in the process of revamping their i18n technology. Software changes! I believe that nobody at LibreOffice is intentionally trying to make anyone’s life harder. This needed to be said. You can already change the URL of the embedded video in your translation, so… Moot point? Also, I don’t get your negativity, Martin. You talk about “project leaders” not communicating when in fact we are all on the same level. If you ever had a look at the Git log https://cgit.freedesktop.org/libreoffice/help/log/ you’ll see that we, translators, are the ones pushing fixes to the help content. So don’t make it seem like there’s some kind of inexistent hierarchy of people disconnected with the rest of translators. Maybe you’re the one who should be asking for more information before spreading this FUD. Olivier has been quite open about adding videos to help, to give a pointed example. Because they have a better model in which they update templates every couple of days or so [1], contrary to our six-month delay where many source code changes have time to accumulate and then get presented in bulk to translators. This changes the perception, IMO, because in my experience, even when there’s more material to translate at Mozilla, it’s always more manageable… That is something we need over here. Hi Mike, I’d just make a small change in the English description: I’d include Office 2016 in the lists of supported formats. Instead of “2007/2010/2013” it could become “2007–2016”, and similarly with the previous format: “97/2000/XP/2003” → “97–2003”. I’ve done this for Spanish.
