Re: [lace] Thread Conversion Question

Shirlee,
Brenda Paternoster's book Threads for Lace 2 will answer ALL your thread
questions.I'm sure someone will tell you who to get it from in the States -
and it's not too expensive. Brenda also does updates whenever she finds a new
thread and these are posted on her website. If you have any thread that's
not in the book, send her a little and it will be assessed and added to the
list.

Any thread can be used for bobbin lace - if in doubt work a small sample to
find out how it feels, both to work with and in the finished piece.

Hi Carolina,
What good news. I would love to see a photograph of the new Lacemaker
Monument. Is it near the lovely Arenys lace museum?

Hi all,
It is not very usual that nowadays we can read on a newspaper that a
monument
to the lacemaker has been placed in the village of Arenys, 40 Km.
from Barcelona.
The village was a well known lace manufacturing center in the 17th.
century, and
its lacemakers have been a reference to all lacemakers in Catalonia.
The monument has been constructed in granite, by Japanese sculptor
Etsuro Sotoo
and assigned by the Arenys Lace Guild. It represents a lacemaker
working. Weights
24 Tn. and it is 3,20 mts. high. The cost has been 60.000 Euros.

A good new without doubt.

RE:Re: [lace] Celtic Cross

2003-10-29 Thread spindexr
Sherry and others,

Don't forget that Google has an image search! I just typed in Celtic Cross and got 10
pages of images, some of which are clearly old crosses from cemeteries. If you've
never done a Google image search before, go to www.google.com and click on the tab
that says Images. Then type in your search terms.

Subject: Re: [lace] Celtic Cross

Hi in Lacingland,
I would like to also thank this group for the information I get just with a click of
my mouse. When I was in Ireland about 5 years ago we went by a cemetary of celtic
crosses. It was huge! I was on a tour so I was on a bus. When I noticed the
cemetary it was too late for me to get a picture of it. I know that might seem morbid
to take a picture of a cemetary but I was so impressed to see so many celtic crosses
in one place. But what would have been better is if I was alone and was able to walk
through the cemetary for I am sure I would have found lots of neat crosses, that I
could have gotten a picture of. And who knows I could have been using these pictures
myself at this time now that I know the basics of doing bobbinlace and designed a
celtic cross from a picture.
A..if I ever go back it will not be on a tour but on my own. And the sound of a
camera would be clicking like crazy!
Sherry

[lace] Lacemaker monument

2003-10-29 Thread Carolina G. Gallego
Hi Jean and Clay and all who have been interested on this thread:

Up to the moment it has not been published any picture of the lacemaker
monument in Arenys de Munt, whereas I have contacted the Town Hall and I
hope I could have any in the next days.
I have to say that the village is divided in two zones and Town Halls.
The upper zone of the village is called Arenys de Munt, and just beside
the sea is located the village of Arenys de Mar. This one, placed some
time ago (I do not remember exactly when), a monument to lacemaker too.
So, I suppose there has been a healthy jealousy between both of them.
As soon as I have the pictures, I am going to hang them on the web to
share with all of you.

Regards from Barcelona.

Carolina.

Re: [lace] Residential Courses in East Anglia.

2003-10-29 Thread Carol Adkinson
Hi All,

We are very lucky to have another couple of residential colleges in this
eastern area of the UK.

The first is Belstead House, near Ipswich, Suffolk in the UK - residential
courses of all sorts, with the lace courses by tutors such as Geraldine
Stott and Sue Webb - both make the learning process very painless, and
students are amazed at what they can turn out!I think Roz Snowden has
also taught, but that I am *not* sure of. The college is set in lovely
grounds, and is well-worth a visit. There are also Go-It-Alone weekends,
where one takes ones lace, and with no tutor but with like-minded people can
make lace all day - and all night too, if the urge takes you. No tutor,
but lots of people to give help and encouragement. The food is wonderful,
and the rooms are mainly single rooms, with washbasin, desk and chair, and
lights!

The other is Maryland College, near Dunstable in Bedfordshire UK. I only
went there once (mainly as Belstead is just down the road from me!) but when
I was there, Pamela Nottingham and Jean Millar were tutors. Again, lovely
grounds, but I didn't think the accommodation/food quite as good as
Belstead. But - if it means one can make lace in comford for a long
weekend, with all meals etc provided, that can't be bad, can it.

If anyone wants any more info, just eMail me, and I'll try to help - the
usual disclaimers, no financial gain, just a *very* satisfied customer.

Carol - in East Anglia, UK.

Not quite right.
Wind the thread around a pencil or thin strip of card several times so that
the wraps are lying close together but not overlapping. If it's a torchon
pattern the thread will be suitable if 12 wraps cover the distance between
two footside pinholes. If it's point ground only 10 wraps. Bedfordshire/
Cluny, Braid and sectional laces are more trial and error.

[lace] California Lace Day

2003-10-29 Thread Patsy A. Goodman
Hi,

There's a Lace Day scheduled for Saturday November 1, 2003 in Torrance,
Calif.

With all the fires in the area is this lace day still going to be held? I
tried e-mailing
Lily who will be a vendor and as yet got no reply. Does any one up there
know? If
we can get up there on I-5 and 405 we are going to try to make it.

[lace-chat] StoneHENGE?

2003-10-29 Thread Margery Allcock
And how do y'all say StoneHENGE?

Stone: as in small rock
Hen: as in chicken's mother
Ge: as in gem, geography, general ... but as just a consonant, not as a
whole syllable.

So the whole word has just the two syllables.

BFN,
Margery.

[lace-chat] Rhyming Words

2003-10-29 Thread Allison E. Moss-Fritch
I have been silent again for a while-but on this vital issue I think I
should de-lurk!

In my American brand of English-using a west coast accent, there is a
non-slant rhyme for orange.

I can rhyme orange with blanc mange-e.g.: You cannot make a good blanc
mange with

Only a small pitted orange!

This is not-none-the-less, what I would consider a perfect rhyme.but it is
not bad, considering all the time and effort put into finding any

thing that is even close!
