[lace] problems with my computer

2004-10-17 Thread Jean Peach
I have to apologise, I am having problems with my computer.
The emails I send it seems say it is 2003. I was wondering
why I am not getting reply to messages. Plus I don't
think I am getting all the messages from Arachne. I do
have a special box where some of my mail goes into.

I also have problems with the computer, can take an
hour before I stop seeing lovely patterns on the screen.
DH is not very well, so hopefully I will sometime soon
be able to get help.

[lace] rings for lacemaking?

2004-10-17 Thread Weronika Patena
Hi,
I found someone selling bobbins on eBay:
You are about to bid on 14 new wooden belgian lace making bobbins. There are 4
rings included..

Does anyone have any idea what the rings are for? The seller doesn't know.

Without a photo I wouldn't have a clue. Patty has read this as turned rings
on the bobbins, I had read it as 4 (separate) rings of unknown size/material/
purpose included because they were there. But I agree with Patty that I
wouldn't consider anything that there's no photo of.

I also found it strange that you have to be a pre-approved buyer, I haven't
seen this one before. As the seller gets the money (and can allow cheques to
clear) before they part with the goods, why is this necessary - especially for
a relatively low cost item?

Hmm. Gets even stranger. Here's another eBay auction of apparently the exact
same item, but by a different seller, for a different price, and this time with
a picture:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemcategory=19158item=8139667910rd=1

The rings are indeed separate, and this seller apparently doesn't know what
they're for either...

Re: [lace] rings for lacemaking?

2004-10-17 Thread Clay Blackwell
Well, from the picture in the second posting you found, I
believe that the rings have nothing at all to do with
lacemaking in general. It may be that someone designed
something which uses the rings as a permanent part of the
construction, but without any other information, I'd say
those rings are just junk being shipped from the seller's
house to your house!!

Re: [lace] Hi and 8 pair cross

bobbins again, and easing myself in gently. Decided to finally make some Christmas
decs with bangles, and this leads me to my problem. I thought I'd have a go at the
Christmas Spider nad have fallen at the first block.

Here's my problem - how do I do the 8 pair cross? Or is there another way of starting
it?

Is this the Christmas spider designed by Jackie MacDouall whose pricking is
on my website? It can be seen at:
http://www.sandbenders.demon.co.uk/gallery/chrspid.htm
As the instructions start with an 8 pair crossing, then I think it probably
is this one.

So far as I know Jackie isn't on arachne at the moment, so she isn't likely
to answer. I haven't made the ornament myself, so I don't know either. If
I were doing the spider I would consult either Practical Skills in Bobbin
Lace by Bridget Cook or the equivalent German book by Ulrike Löhr. The
crossing isn't a decorative feature of this pattern - it's there just to get
the pairs into the right places - so I would pick whichever 8 pair crossing
in the books looks easiest to do.

Yes, she had the Colcotton in a rainbow of wonderful colors. I believe she

So give her a couple of days to drive back to Virginia.

Re: [lace] rings for lacemaking?

2004-10-17 Thread Brenda Paternoster
Well I think that the bobbins are mass produced, so should cost about 1
USD / 1 Euro each when new, and the rings may have been for a curtain
pole - or as Clay suggested just junk!

If you want to see pics of lace bobbins with little rings carved around
them (as Patti suggested) have a look at:
http://users.argonet.co.uk/users/paternoster/lace/bobbins/specials.html

There are two such bobbins about 3/4 of the way down the page.

[lace-chat] ebay email scam/phishing

I don't sell on ebay but on half.com, which they own. Got two messages to my email
apparently meant for others thanking the seller for kindness and saying paypal has
forwarded money. I deleted one and sent the other to [EMAIL PROTECTED], hoping that
is ebay's notification process.

I don't expect any arachnids to be fooled, you all (and me on your coattails) are
pretty savvy in the ways of email, but be aware of this new phishing technique.

having read all your notes about Halas Lace I thought I would just mentione
that I also went to Kiskunhalas and
Kalocsa. That was in 1984

I wrote about it in my book and would be willing to give a report, but it
would have to be in sections as it is rather long.
Let me know if you are interested.
