[lace] IOLI Bulletin

2006-04-01 Thread Tamara P Duvall

Gentle Spiders,

Mine came today, no joke (despite the date). Excellent timing, since I
just finished reading the Canadian Lace Gazette this morning (reading
lace-related publications before breakfast is my equivalent of a cup
of cofee to get me going before I brave the world at large), and am
now looking forward to tomorrow.

I haven't _read_ anything as yet, but, flipping through, noticed
several pages devoted to Patchwork Lace (also known as Normandy
Lace), which I'm glad to see; not my cup o'T precisely, since I'm not
overfond of needles as lace tools, but interesting.

And Devon Thein has an article, as usual, but has taken a break from
scouring museums, and writes about her experiences and experiments in
Wire Lace instead. Which is fine with me -- Devon's sense of humour is
delightful no matter what subject she picks, and I'm looking forward
_greatly_ to reading that article, which, I hope, will be full of
trials and tribulations gently ridiculed.

But, the greatest and most immediate pleasure came from seeing -- in an
article titled Lace Making Fairs in Catalonia (Spain) -- a photo of
Carolina de la Guardia Gallego at her witch-stitch lace. Nice to meet
you at long last, Carolina :)

For those who have not yet seen Carolina's new designs in old witch
stitch lace, here's her second book, with links to the first and other
goodies:

David, I've already printed out the numerous uses for
WD-40, as well as forwarded the list to a few family
members. My husband's supply of WD-40 is going to be
depleted faster than he expects.

Also enjoying the conversation related to license

I'm not at all shy about expressing political opinions myself - BUT I
feel that when they involve such sensitive issues, it is more
courteous not to put them on lists dedicated to other purposes.

I know I can simply hit delete, but I'd prefer to keep everyone on
the list as a friend, and when opinions about sensitive topics cause
people to leave the list or become offended, that becomes difficult.

The moderator is back. As Jane mentioned, I don't check the computer during
Shabbat (Friday just before sundown to Saturday after sundown), so if you want
to flame each other with wild abandon, you picked the right time! I've skimmed
through the political messages, but I'm not going to read them in detail. Have
you all gotten this off your chests? Do you think we could get back to less
emotionally touchy subjects? This is a nice group and it would be a shame to
lose members because of political differences.

And can someone please tell me what WD-40 is?

Best wishes,

[lace-chat] WD40

2006-04-01 Thread Carol Melton
Dear Avital, WD-40 is a product that has many uses - see David's
email - however - Wikipedia says -

WD-40 is the trademark of a widely-used penetrating oil (cleaner,
lubricant and anti-corrosive solution) developed in 1953 by Norm
Larsen, then working for the Rocket Chemical Company. It stands for
Water Displacement, 40th attempt (see below). Its first industrial
use was by Convair, which used WD-40 to protect the outer skin of the
Atlas missile from rust and corrosion. The product became
commercially available on store shelves in San Diego in 1958.
WD-40's name comes straight out of Norm Larsen's lab book. Larsen was
attempting to concoct a formula to prevent corrosion — a task which
is done by displacing water. His persistence paid off when he
perfected the formula on his 40th try. [1]
At one time there was for sale in Mexico a similar product called
WB-50 whose name apparently had no meaning other than to mark it as
an alternative to WD-40.
While its uses are many and varied, WD-40 should not be used as a
general-purpose lubricant, as it dries out very quickly and collects
dust. This can result in serious damage to machinery and equipment
designed for use with heavy oils when they are lubricated with
lightweight WD-40.
Many handymen consider WD-40 and duct tape to be the two most
important items in their toolbox. In The Duct Tape Guys' book
WD-40, they proclaim Two rules get you through life: If it's stuck
and it's not supposed to be, WD-40 it. If it's not stuck and it's
supposed to be, duct tape it.

It is especially helpful for taking apart metal objects (nuts and
bolts) that have been exposed to the elements and are rusted together
- such as ham radio antennas..
Best Regards,

[lace-chat] Eel Killing Tool - Poland, Germany

2006-04-01 Thread David in Ballarat
Dear Friends,
I have been asked by a friend to ask my resources (aka lace-chat) if anyone
knows of a supplier for a tool which is used to kill eels in Poland, Germany
etc.

Apparently this thing consists of two prongs to hold the eel down and a 3rd
prong which is operated from the long handle and shoots through its head
even a proper name for this tool would be a help so I could search on
Google.

My friend is anxious to acquire large numbers of these tools for use in
Australia's Northern Territory to kill the Cane Toads which have invaded
from Queensland.
Thanks
David in Ballarat

Never heard of it, so don't know the name, even in Polish. But,
perhaps, eel farming or some such term would elicit results? Because
in Poland, most of the eels are no longer caught in the wild, but bred
for the market in ponds (I think they need salt water, though, since
all of the eel-farming seems to be concentrated in the north of Poland,
near the Baltic).

Thanks, everyone who told me about WD-40. It does sound very useful. Now that I
think of it, someone did send me an e-mail years ago: If it moves and it
shouldn't, use duct tape. If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40. I think
she recommended duct tape for my DS, although this morning, after the time
change, I think WD-40 would be more appropriate.

It's pouring outside. Mom, do I have to go to work today???
